Facebook Clamps Down On Gun Sales

0

By Press Association

Technology giant Facebook will clamp down on users selling guns on its site.

A similar policy will be applied to Instagram – the photo-sharing network recently acquired by Facebook – meaning posts will be deleted if they appear to be peddling firearms, or looking to buy arms.

The social network has been under fire from US groups as Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action, which have campaigned against the ease with which gun buyers and sellers can arrange transactions on Facebook – even though they are technically not allowed to post such details.

The changes, due to come into force in coming weeks, will mean these posts can now be deleted.

In a statement, Facebook said: “We will remove reported posts that explicitly indicate a specific attempt to evade or help others evade the law.”

Facebook said that instead of patrolling its network for violators, it will rely on reports from users and police.

Monika Bickert, Facebook’s head of global policy management, said: ” Facebook, at its heart, is about helping people connect and communicate. Because of the diversity of people and cultures on our services, we know that people sometimes post or share things that may be controversial or objectionable.

“We work hard to find a balance between enabling people to express themselves about topics that are important to them, and creating an environment that is safe and respectful.

This balance is important to how we view commercial activity on Facebook or Instagram.”

She added: “We have strict rules about how businesses can use our advertising tools.”

The company said it would not permit advertising for illegal drugs, tobacco products, prescription pharmaceuticals, weapons, and several other products and services, and will restrict advertising for products such as alcohol, adult products, and gaming.

Ms Bickert said: “In all cases, we have systems in place to review and remove advertising that violates our policies, is false, deceptive, or misleading.”

Peregrino Brimah: Letter To IBB And OBJ, New Generation TakeOver Imminent

This letter is to the attention of ex-President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida and two-time ex-President, Olusegun Obasanjo.

On behalf of Nigeria’s youth, I will like to inform you that the Youth are coming. We have risen. We have decided to be the leaders of today. Not tomorrow that never came; the leaders of Today. We the Youth are reclaiming our country. Our country, a country you do not own.

This message is to inform, or advise you of your next actions. The two of you got us here. You two created most of the mess we are in today. You two rendered this nation nonviable. You two held the reins of government in maniacal style, devoured the commonwealth and created holes in the system through which billions of US dollars could be looted. You two with your pals, rendered the nation helpless through hopeless transfers of power. You two ruined our systems, our judicial system, our security system and our political system. You two invented the almighty cabal and empowered them limitlessly, transferring the endowment of the nation into the hands of a few wicked, rapacious monsters. You started sharing oil wells to the dirty, still being shared today for election 2015. You two have continuously controlled the nations ‘political’ dispensation, juggling power and implanting yourselves, your brothers, friends and your godsons into office.

It is thanks to the both of you that we are a nation under siege today, ruled by crazy, inebriated ruthless plunderers. It is thanks to you that we are the bottom of the barrel, a laughing stock of the entire world, not even making headlines anymore, not even when we have the greatest flood of the year, or even when we have the largest looting scandals of human history. No headlines. The world has forgotten us, condemned the nation’s youth as hopeless and helpless mentally ruined slobber. But Lord knows we are not. We are a force. We are things you can never imagine. We can plan and organize in ways you will never dream was possible. We are the Nigerian Youth awakening.

And today, we have decided to give you a chance to make this revolution less bloody. We are giving you a chance for a little redemption, if such can exist after all the atrocities you have done. Our proposition is simple: Fix this mess and hand over to Youth. And then, take yourselves on exile from Nigeria, never to return for the rest of your lives.

You broke your pledge to Nigeria. You never loved Nigeria with all your strength; you only loved your pockets, and what a shame that was. Like the Solomon story, you chose for the baby to be split in half and killed; you rather possess half a dead baby than see it alive if won’t be yours. But now, you and your ilk must leave our nation, or you will never see sunlight again in it when we are soon through. Corruption is robbery and elite robbers will go to jail. It will be a new day.

We can and will do this with you or without you. We are determined. You are seeing the force of change, the natural tendency of things, as Ghandi said, after a while all tyrant leadership eventually falls. Every wicked tyranny in history eventually falls. You are witnessing a transition period in Nigeria that no one could ever expect or predict. You are seeing a cohesive force of Youth ready to die to make change. Youth media, youth activists, and everyday youth moving as a force majeure. Rising up all around you.

The choice is yours, for it is within your power to do something good. We know you; we know the conspiracies you have plotted that got us here. Now, the people of Nigeria, the millions of destitute, the millions of sick, wounded, hopeless and grieving, represented by a Youth who have decide to take charge, direct you to fix the mess you created and be granted safe leave, or you wait it out in your mansions in Minna and Ota, watch a lengthier, severe but by God, successful, intellectual and moral revolution, and be taken to the gallows. Yes, for all of us and our friends and families that have lived in suffering and poverty and died painful deaths in the hands of your governments, we will be brutal to the corrupt. We will take no prisoners.

Fellow Youth. We implore you set your differences aside just for now, at least. We can resume the animosity later, but right now we have a common task. In Ghana, the Hausa and Ga do not quarrel and kill each other. It is these wicked ‘elders’ and elite that have kept us this way; pitted the Hausa against the Igbo to distract us while they loot us silly. We can work together again as we did to elect Abiola. Why quarrel and fight each other over budgetary dispensation of $30 billion, when together we can fight and for once in our history, recover$100s of billions from looters and re-establish a full yearly income of three times as much for our nation?

Perhaps when we bring in our total oil earning, the true figure of which Nigeria has never known, and which more than half of has always been set for looting since the Babangida regime, perhaps we would have such surpluses and a quality, sane life, we won’t even need fight each other anymore. Once we get rid of these jagajaga, greedy, sick and morally deficient looters, we will have a true SNC. We will decide if we want regions or nations, all in the best interest of life and the pursuit of happiness with peace and security. If the time is not now, then when is it? Who will avenge the deaths of the innocent students slaughtered in Yobe… in Borno, in Bayelsa, in Benue? Who will ensure our police are fairly paid and equipped from the nation’s wealth, so they secure the nation properly rather than focus on street bribe? Who will avenge the pain and suffering of millions of Nigerians today and in the past? If not us and if not now, when will we be the leaders of the day? Who will retrieve the 60% looted annual endowment and give it to its rightful owners, so Nigeria will no longer have 112 million poor and over 100 million destitute, living under a dollar-a-day, while a few senseless, greedy cows can have hundreds of billions of dollars to lose to foreign banks; or can privatize and make phony companies in Nigeria to bill us triple global averages and extort us further?

Imagine you were the one laying there in Yobe, knife on your neck about to be slaughtered. How will you fight? What will you want, for security, for change? And as you lay dying, how will you want your death to be avenged of those who allowed the nation slip into such a state? This is how I feel, this is how we must feel. Let this be the knife-on-our-neck revolution.

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. (Bible)

It is our time. The Youth Will Lead Today! We will peacefully, boldly fight this war! And we will win!

May God continue to be on the side of the oppressed. May God give us the power for this battle.

2014 Budget: President Jonathan Declares War On Rivers State – APC

06-03-14

PRESS RELEASE

2014 BUDGET: PRESIDENT JONATHAN DECLARES WAR ON RIVERS STATE

•APC commends Hon. Peterside’s walk-out at Works Ministry’s Budget Defence

We have learnt with shock and disbelief, of the zero allocation to Rivers State in the 2014 Budget of the Federal Ministry of Works. What this means is that Rivers State will not receive any Federal Government project this year!

No one is deceived by the claim of the Minister of Works, Architect Mike Onolememen, while defending the Ministry’s budget on Tuesday before the House of Representatives Committee on Works, that neither the Federal Government nor his ministry was at war with Rivers State. If that is the case, then what could have warranted the omission of Rivers State from the list of States that will enjoy Federal Government presence in terms of capital project execution this year? If this is not war, then what is it?

This is very sad and condemnable. It is simply unbelievable that President Jonathan could stoop so low as to direct the Ministry of Works to bypass Rivers State just because he has some differences with Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

We must, in this regard, commend Hon. Dakuku Peterside, Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), for proving to be a worthy representative of the people of Rivers State by staging a walk-out in protest over the zero allocation to the state during the Works Ministry’s budget defence.

According to Chief Peterside who represents Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency of Rivers State, “I decided to leave the budget session on discovering from the ministry’s details of on-going projects and 2014 budget proposal that there was no single allocation for projects in Rivers State. The few projects listed in Rivers State got zero allocation. For such criminal neglect, there is definitely more to this omission than meets the eye”.

A breakdown of details of on-going highway and bridge projects in Rivers State shows that no single allocation was given to such projects as construction of Eleme Junction Flyover and dualization of the access roads to Onne Port in Rivers State; access roads to Eleme Port Harcourt Refinery; construction of Bodo-Bonny Road with a bridge across the Opobo Channel and the rehabilitation of the Abalamabie (Allison Hart) bridge. It will be recalled that Rivers State government awarded and completed Eleme Junction Flyover project in the year 2009.

If we may ask, what joy does President Jonathan derive in continuing this ill-advised war against Rivers State and her people? Under the watch of President Jonathan, Rivers State has lost much revenue as our oil wells were transferred to neighbouring states. They have taken away the oil wells in Soku and given them to his home State, Bayelsa. They have taken the ones between Oyigbo and Etche and given them to Abia. So, our resources continue to dwindle. We used to make between N19bn and N20bn; now we are doing N13bn.

To continue this senseless war against Rivers State and her people, other areas that the administration of President Jonathan has haunted the Rivers State people include the blatant refusal of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to sign the necessary documents that would have assisted the State to obtain an African Development Bank loan to provide pipe-borne water for the State and save people of the State from dying from diseases related from bad water.

Refusal by the Federal Government to authorize the release of the two surveillance helicopters procured by the Rivers State Government at N30B so that the State will be paying demurrage in hard currency annually. These helicopters would have assisted the Federal Government to fight oil theft in the Niger Delta region thereby increasing the dwindling revenue accruable to the Federation Account.

The refusal of the Federal Government to approve the release of these machines into the country that would have benefitted the entire Nigerians is a demonstration of how not to play politics with the life of Nigerians. This is a demonstration of how this government has alienated itself from those it governs and prefers to have our common patrimony kept in private hands while majority of Nigerians continue to wallow in poverty in the midst of plenty.

Refusal by the administration of President Jonathan to implement the UNEP report that would have assisted in the cleanup of the ecological devastated Ogoniland of Rivers State.

With all these sad events it is now very glaring to any sound mind that Rivers State is being treated as a conquered State in a nation in which we are a key player and sadly all these are happening after delivering the highest number of votes that made Dr Goodluck Jonathan the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria during the general elections of 2011.

The All progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State therefore is deeply saddened by this bizarre turn of events as orchestrated by the Presidency. The State Interim Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibamu Ikanya, is full of sadness; he is dumbfounded that President Jonathan and his administration should declare and sustain a war on Rivers State and her people by ensuring that since he assumed office Rivers State cannot boast of one single Federal Government presence. We as a federating state of this nation pay our taxes and Rivers is among the major states in Nigeria that contribute much to the revenue of this country. Therefore, to be treated as if we are no longer part of this nation because of politics is no longer acceptable to us!

We, therefore, demand an end to this senseless war against an innocent people even as we urge the good people of Rivers State to continue to identify with Gov. Amaechi, who is the face of change in Rivers State. In the words of Dr. Ikanya, “Gov. Amaechi represents change and the people of Rivers, as true progressives, should remain loyal to APC, a vehicle for change both in the State and in the entire Nigeria.”

PDP Chieftains Kidnapped In Rivers State

Two chieftains of the People’s Democratic Party, Rivers State chapter, have been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

The chieftains, Hon. Chinyere Igwe and the Phalga party chairman Ikechi Chinda – both loyal to the camp of former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Austin Opara – were abducted yesterday night at the Igwe residence by yet-to-be identified assailants wielding different weapons.

A few members of the PDP in Rivers State have reacted to the kidnapping of its party leaders in what they have described as failure in the Amaechi-led government in providing safety for lives and properties of residents and individuals in the state.

In a statement by the state secretary of the party (PDP) Hon. Ibibia Walter, he stated that the Amaechi-led government is bent on encouraging an atmosphere of fear and terror in the state to hold on to power, accordingly the party urged Gov. Amaechi to ensure the unconditional release of its party leaders who were kidnapped in their homes last night.

In the statement, he recalled that when COP Mbu Joseph Mbu was around, the state has been peaceful and the government could not carry out acts of intimidation and other heinous crimes. Just weeks after his redeployment, things have started happening.

Meanwhile, stakeholders in Phalga constituency 2 led by Chief Alaye Eremie and Chief Bar. Okiri have added a voice of solidarity to the position of the state party (PDP) leadership to call for the immediate release of its members.

As at the time of this report, no contact had been made by the kidnappers and efforts to speak with the commisioner of police, COP has not been productive.

U.S. Seizes Largest Ever Embezzlement By Nigerian Dictator, Sani Abacha

By Devlin Barrett

The Justice Department is moving to seize more than half a billion dollars of allegedly corrupt proceeds from former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and his associates, in what officials called the largest such action in U.S. history.

In a court filing unsealed Wednesday in federal court in Washington, D.C., government lawyers said the U.S. has already frozen more than $458 million in bank accounts around the world, and seeks to recover at least $100 million more.

The seizure is part of a kleptocracy initiative, aimed at recovering money that was looted by dictators from their own countries.

“General Abacha was one of the most notorious kleptocrats in memory, who embezzled billions from the people of Nigeria while millions lived in poverty,” said Mythili Raman, head of the Justice Department’s criminal division.

The U.S. government has moved to freeze $313 million in accounts in the Bailiwick of Jersey and $145 million in accounts in France. There are also investment portfolios and bank accounts in the United Kingdom worth at least $100 million that the U.S. has targeted, the official said.

Gen. Abacha became president of Nigeria in a military coup in 1993 and ran the country until his death in 1998. U.S. authorities charge that Gen. Abacha, his son Mohammed Sani Abacha, their associate Abubakar Atiku Bagudu and others embezzled or misappropriated billions of dollars from the government of Nigeria and others, and laundered the money by buying bonds backed by the United States using U.S. financial institutions.

Under the Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, the Justice Department seeks to seize the proceeds of foreign officials’ corruption and return the money to the harmed countries.

How The Bukola Saraki Connections Got Bolaji Abdullahi Fired

The real reasons one of Nigeria’s outstanding ministers in the President Jonathan’s cabinet was kicked out yesterday concerns his political allegiance to the Saraki dynasty.

It is a public knowledge to those following the Kwara politics, that the former governor of the State, Senator Bukola Saraki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress is the political godfather of mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.

Abdullahi, apart from serving as the former commissioner under the regime of former Governor Bukola Saraki was subsequently anointed minister by Saraki . This time, his refused to stay loyal to the People’s Democratic Party cost him his job.

Following Saraki’s defection for the All Progressives Congress (though yet to be ratified by the senate), the Minister of Sports, continued to align with the opposition against the interests of the President.

He has openly disassociated himself with the political interests of the President in Kwara State.

At the stakeholders’ meeting summoned by the state PDP caretaker committee, the former sports minister was abse, drawing insinuations of double loyalty from some political stakeholders in Kwara State.

It was gathered that the final straw that might have broken the camel’s back was the rally at the reception in Ilorin, where he failed to address the audience to reaffirm his loyalty to the PDP government. He was at the Emir of Ilorin’s palace when President Jonathan paid homage to the Emir.

The organisers of the rally did not recognise him and it was suggested that the failure to recognise him was due to assertions by his associates that he, Abdullahi, is not a politician but a technocrat.

With the sack of the minister, he can freely join the APC and show his unflinching support for his political godfather. President would allow a cabinet member work with the opposition, no matter how bright the person is..

Chris Attoh’s Very Emotional Instagram Message To His Fiancee, Damilola Adegbite

Former Tinsel stars, Damilola Adegbite and Ghanaian fine boy, Chris Attoh are so in love and they are willing to flaunt it anyday, anytime and anywhere. The lovers are to wed in April.

Meanwhile, Chris took to his Instagram page as he spoke of his wife-to-be for the very first time. Love is a beautiful thing most definitely. Chris wrote:

“Imagine waking up to a face like this everyday for the rest of your life, with a great personality to go with it. Im truely blessed cus I wont have to imagine. Counting my blessing each day. Thank you all for all the congratulatory messages and the immense love you guys have sent our way.”

My Emergence As PDP Flag Bearer Would Collapse APC – Caleb Olubolade

MOST APC MEMBERS WILL DECAMP TO PDP WHEN THEY HEAR OLUBOLADE IS CANDIDATE

A frontline aspirant in the June 2014 Ekiti state governorship election and the former minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade says his candidature as PDP flag bearer will be an express ticket to victory as his emergence would collapse the structures and the membership of the All Progressive Congress in the State.

Speaking to e-Umbrella while submitting the party’s governorship nomination form today at the National Secretariat of the PDP , Olubolade said his wealth of experience, clout and proven leadership qualities were the defining features that separate his aspiration from the long list of other aspirants, saying ” my clout is felt all over the state as a bridge builder. Across my years of service, I have given leadership even to other political parties. If I am given the ticket of the PDP, members of the opposition APC in the state will defect to our great party.”

” What clearly distances my aspiration from others is that I am coming with a lot of experience . I am not coming for trial and error. I know the right keys to press and the best way and time to do it. I am offering myself as a vehicle for the rapid development of Ekiti state.”

He said his cardinal vision for the state would restore education, agriculture, technology and industrialization and very importantly, security to the front burner. Said he, ” Ekiti is in dire need of transformation and we are going to replicate what the PDP led Federal Government is doing at the centre. As we are doing this, we opening up the state for investments, local and international, so as to create wealth for our people. He further decried the current state of affairs in the state, describing Ekiti under Governor Fayemi as a farm land.

Petroleum Ministry Responds To Allegation On PIB Publicity Funds

MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM RESOURCES
NNPC TOWERS, BLOCK ‘D’ HERBERT MACAULAY WAY,
CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT, P.M.B. 449, ABUJA
5th March 2014

A REJOINDER ON THE PUBLICATION IN DAILY NEWSPAPERS OF WEDNESDAY 5TH MARCH 2014 ERRONEOUSLY CAPTIONED “PIB PETROLEUM MINISTRY UNABLE TO ACCOUNT FOR N500M PIB PUBLICITY FUNDS

The said publication is a total distortion of what transpired at the sitting of the Senate Gas Committee on Tuesday 4th March 2014.
The Gas Committee Chaired by Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, was for Budget hearing dealing with the Ministry’s gas project as can be seen in the name of the Committee. The reporters carefully and deliberately ignored the main subject of the Sitting and delved into a subject the Committee only mentioned in passing. Disparaging the character and person of the Permanent Secretary, Danladi Kifasi as being incompetent to explain the Ministry’s Budget.

THIS IS WHAT TRANSPIRED:

The Permanent Secretary had informed the Committee that the Ministry of Petroleum Resources did not implement any gas project because they lack the expertise to carry the construction works hence his decision to transfer the Vote to the NNPC where the necessary expertise is domiciled.
At this point, the Committee at the instance of the Permanent Secretary, invited Mr. Ige, the Executive Director Gas, NNPC to speak. In his presentation, the Executive Director, Gas NNNPC, Mr. Ige was commended by the Committee for the huge success registered in the Gas Sector. Mr. Ige not only gave time lines but unveiled the various PPP arrangements put in place to save government from the huge capital inflow required in the gas sector. The reporters ignored this laudable presentation and capitalized on an aside – — a one line comment that came from the Chairman who wanted to know the full meaning of PIB. The Permanent Secretary explained that the PIB stands for the Petroleum Industry Bill and that the Vote allocated to this programme is for sensitization, advocacy in the print and electronic media as well as billboards and purchase of vehicles. He jokingly added that these vehicles can even convey the distinguished Senators to the North East part of the country. A joke the Vice Chairman of the Committee chuckled at and asked the Permanent Secretary why he is particular about the North East and the Permanent Secretary responded that he is from that part of the country. That ended all references and discussions on the PIB.
Now where did these reporters hear of the misappropriation of the N500 million and at what point in that meeting was the Permanent Secretary described as incompetent to defend the budgetary allocation of the Ministry. These reporters are not only mischievous, callous but have succeeded in totally assassinating the character of a man of honour and repute, a Permanent Secretary who also served in the Ministry of Finance where the entire financial matters of this nation is domiciled and he is also a Chartered Accountant and a Lawyer. We demand full retraction and apology from these Newspapers and Reporters.
Finally, they said reporters were not present at the Sitting of the Committee on one of the made a brief entrance for less than 10 minutes during the entire sitting. The only reporter present from the inception of the sitting was from one of the Television stations. We have also a copy of the tape of the entire proceedings and it will be aired at the appropriate time.

FG lying To Nigerians On Reasons For Fuel Scarcity – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the federal government to level up with Nigerians on the reasons for the ongoing debilitating fuel scarcity that has further compounded the pains inflicted on the citizens by an incompetent government.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the fact that the scarcity has persisted has put a lie to the government’s well-worn line that the long queues at filling stations were caused by panic buying.

It said the queues that have been witnessed in Lagos and other major cities in recent days are the longest and the most chaotic in Nigeria in recent years, and have shown that the situation is not just due to panic buying but a consequence of a more serious problem.

”The truth is that ordinary Nigerians are suffering the consequences of the runway corruption in our country’s oil sector, much as the government would want the citizens to believe otherwise. With huge funds unaccounted for by the NNPC, the so-called subsidy shrouded in secrecy and those who robbed the nation blind under the guise of fuel subsidy walking free, it was just a matter of time for the country to witness the kind of scarcity that has now grounded socio-economic activities across the land.

”We know that this Federal Government lacks credibility and has consistently lied to Nigerians on various issues affecting them, and we urge it to come clean for once on the reasons for this fuel scarcity and also step up efforts to end it.

”Coming at a time that power supply is at the worst and Nigerians rely on their electricity generators to stave off darkness and heat, it is downright cruel and totally inexplicable that the government would compound the monumental suffering of the people by its inability to provide fuel which they need to power their generators. Furthermore, hapless commuters are paying exorbitant fares to move from one point to another,” APC said.

The party said a government that has been touting uninterrupted supply of fuel as an achievement, even when that is the least that the people expect from their government, has now lost perhaps the main feather in its cap due to massive corruption, dwindling resources due to unprecedented looting of the commonwealth and blatant incompetence.

“These are the factors that have made it impossible for the government to issue, on time, the approvals to oil marketers to bring in the much-needed fuel, revive the nation’s refineries or even build new ones.

“The implication is that Nigerians should brace up for more fuel scarcity in the weeks and months ahead, even if the current one is resolved one way or another,” it said

Bayo Oluwasanmi: Centenary Celebrations In The Midst Of Death & Funeral

President Goodluck Jonathan’s speech on the occasion of Nigeria’s centenary celebrations is conveniently arranged. It reads like a wayside refreshment designed to tame and temper the stupor of an inebriate.
Nigeria at 100 represents the Babel of the ancient world that foreshadows our current situation. Languages still divide us, we’re still distrustful of and perplexed by one another. Nigeria at 100 is like a football game in which millions of Nigerians as spectators in need of exercise are watching a handful of players in need of rest.
Have you ever spent the night in a wilderness? If so, you will have little trouble identifying with the complaints of Nigerians as Mr. Jonathan celebrates the centenary. The wilderness is a hostile place. By day the sun beats down mercilessly, and the temperature soars. Food is scarce, and water is virtually nonexistent in a wilderness. This is the graphic picture. This is the metaphor of Nigeria at centenary celebrations.
Mr. Jonathan’s speech is not an encouragement for Nigerians who are down in the pits. It is not a discouragement either over temptation from lustful and corruptive thoughts. Surely, it is not a diagnosis for the purpose of living for the mistreated and ignored Nigerians. Excerpts from his speech show Mr. Jonathan lives in the bubble.
“I have often expressed the conviction that our amalgamation was not a mistake,” Mr. Jonathan declares. “While our union may have been inspired by considerations external to our people; I have no doubt that we are destined by God Almighty God to live together as one big nation, united in diversity.” The mere idea of amalgamation means we are unequal and separate – Yorubas, Igbos, and Hausas – driven by the selfish interest of the amalgamators “inspired by considerations external to our people.” Amalgamation has been instrumental in producing the Civil War and other justifiable rebellions within the context of a disunited and disjointed diversity.
Mr. Jonathan said he considered himself “specially privileged to lead our country into its second century of existence… But what I feel most is not frustration, it is not disillusionment. What I feel is great pride and great hope for a country that is bound to overcome the transient pains of the moment and eventually take its rightful place among the greatest nations on earth.”
Mr. President, how could you feel frustration and disillusionment when you are not one of the 99.9% shoeless Nigerians (no pun intended)? Speaking of hope, well there is no medicine like hope. However, it is one thing to speak of hope when things look doubtful, when the future of Nigeria and Nigerians are uncertain, when circumstances are crowding them in and when Nigerians have been crushed to the floor. It is something else to speak of hope when there is no doubt about the present, when the future is certain. Hope in the midst of utter turmoil and butchery of our children cannot simply be starry-eyed optimism, it must be built upon bedrock reality.
“While the occasion of our centenary undoubtedly calls for celebration, it is also a moment to pause and reflect on our journey of the past one hundred years…” says Mr. Jonathan. It is sad but true that those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it. The centenary should be an occasion for a sobering warning and an opportunity to learn from the past, and not a time for celebrations!
“We are a nation of the future,” Mr. Jonathan proudly asserts, “not of the past and while we may have travelled for a century, we are not yet at our destination of greatness.” A nation of the future? Which future? Hopeless future? Poverty ravaging future? Corruption infested future? Future of wasted generation of youths? A nation of future of army of brigands? A nation without vision for the future? Which destination of greatness is Mr. Jonathan talking about? Mr. President no one except you and your followers can visualize the future you dream of! From all indications and the compelling body of evidence before Nigerians, we’re a nation of the past. The future is grim and dire and scary and, and, and…
For Mr. Jonathan, the only visible achievement of the country in the past one century is democracy, the new capital city of Abuja and the uniqueness of Nigeria. Hear him: “We are a unique country. We have been brought together in a union like no other by providence. Our nation evolved from three regions to thirty six states and a Federal Capital Territory.”
“We have travelled from the Parliamentary system of government. We have moved our capital from the coastal city of Lagos to Abuja … Today Abuja stands as a monument to our national aspiration for greater unity; it symbolises our dream of a modern nation unhinged from primordial cleavages as melting pot of our diversity.”
“If in our first century, we could build a new capital city, we can surely build a newer, stronger, more united and prosperous Nigeria in the next century that will be an authentic African success story.”
I have never seen or read of a group of people whose prosperity, strength, and unity were dictated by their ability to build a new capital city. Mr. Jonathan must be a “unique” President of “a unique nation.”
Quoting the great Madiba – Nelson Mandela – Mr. Jonathan said: “…in line with the thoughts of that great son of our continent, Nelson Mandela, let us not judge ourselves, and let not the world judge us by how many times we have stumbled, but by how strongly we have risen, every single time that we have faltered.” Mr. President, Mandela was not referring to the manufactured, man-made, and self-inflicted stumbles and falls we brought upon ourselves in Nigeria. How many times do we have to stumble and fall as 100-year old nation before we learn how to crawl, walk, and run? The falls have been many, the falls have been unnecessary; the falls have been shameful, laughable, and ludicrous. And every single time we stumbled, we fall deeper and deeper into the abyss.
A lot has been said and written as to the wisdom that informed the President’s decision to celebrate the centenary. This administration in line with past administrations have ruinous infatuations with meaningless and wasteful jamborees that have no economic value to the people. Again, this circus of foolishness like others have not survived the disillusionments and disappointments associated with such infatuations. It’s no surprise men of character and conscience deleted their names from the list of dishonorable honorees that includes the blood thirsty dictators Abacha and Babangida.
But by far, the brainless and despicable part of the politics of the centenary celebrations is the timing. The centenary was being celebrated when the sour smell from the offensive odors of fresh blood of innocent children from the killing fields of Yobe by Boko Haram had hardly cleared out of the air. And to demonstrate the insensitivity and “I don’t give a damn” attitude of Mr. Jonathan to the horror and nightmare that have befallen the victims’ parents, reference to the victims was tucked away in the 37th paragraph of his 4-page 43-paragraph speech.
In a single climatic day, our civilization once again was assaulted and threatened. Take a look at the killing spree of the Haramists at the very month Mr. Jonathan was the chief host of a barren centenary. This past Saturday, back-to-back car bombs struck a market in Maiduguri at least 51 people were killed. On Feb 16, hundreds invaded Izge, a village on Nigeria’s eastern border, and at least 90 people died. Three days later, about 96 people were killed in Bama. On February 25, a boarding school in Buni, a town 100 miles west of Izge was burned and at least 29 students mostly teenagers died. Boko Haram has killed more than 215 people in the past two weeks.
It is a raw deal for us as parents and as Nigerians for Mr. Jonathan for daring our sensibilities by celebrating a centenary of no historical essence in the midst of death and funeral. History will judge Mr. Jonathan for letting loose the turmoil by given free rein to the terrorists and for doing absolutely nothing to finally corral the slaughtering of our children.
History will not be kind either to the legislators in Abuja. Their lack of initiative, their wavering posture, and their lackadaisical approach with content far away looks on their faces to national issues paved the way for the much deadlier violence and the collapse of our collective civilization.
Historians will remind us “Here lies the bodies of our children from the flames and smokes of Boko Haram cocktails and crackle of gun fire while President Jonathan and the National Assembly remain spectators in the face of devouring wolves.”
A century history of our nation is littered with death and funeral in all fronts – socially, economically, and politically. The Haramists have only tipped the scale by the extent of the regularity, severity, spontaneity, and callousness of their killings. The situation in Nigeria is a tinder box. Most of the history of our 100 years of existence as a nation has been dominated by protests and unrest which reflect mounting frustrations at a dysfunctional political system and a failing economy. Our lives have been miserable.
Nigerians live below the poverty line. Our economy is in decline. Pensions when paid are not enough. People are literally hungry. Young people have no future. Unemployment hovers all over the place. The oil, supposed to be a blessing is our biggest barrier to progress. We thought it would bring the greatest joy, it is our greatest undoing – a resource curse. Things have never been worse.
Political promises to improve the economy have never been fulfilled. Badly managed privatization policies continue to stagnate the economy. The same people are holding power all the time. They don’t do anything but they do get the largest salaries in the world. The political system has kept the country Balkanized and created restrained economic growth. Our political leadership is divided along ethnic lines. The many layers of government curb economic development because no one is in charge. Now, Nigerians are warming up to the idea that they have to take power in their hands. The political elite feels fear and insecure.
What a strange, upside-down world Nigeria is? We live in a country where those receiving the greatest public applause and financial reward are those who loot the treasury with no regard to their moral character or ethical conduct. By contrast, those fighting for the people are without recognition or reward – the humble, the merciful, those who work for the peace, progress, and fairness – are persecuted for doing right.
Meanwhile, the victims’ parents and the rest of Nigerians would have to cope with the shock of recent days. The biggest problem now is to come back to our senses.

Soyinka’s Statement Is Stupid, Foolish & Insignificant – Gumsu Sani-Abacha

Daughter of late Nigerian dictator, General Sani Abacha, Gumsu has put Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka  over his recent statements about her late father following his rejection of the centenary award the Nigerian government offered him.

Soyinka had rejected the nomination for an award at the 100 years celebration of Nigeria’s amalgamation simply because the late General Sani Abacha was included on the same list. The renowned writer had referred to the honor conferred on Abacha as an insult.

Daughter of the late Military leader, Gumsu had taken to her Facebook page to blast the writer. She revealed she had loved Soyinka’s books while she was younger but now sees his statement as ‘foolish, stupid and insignificant’.

She wrote:

“Some1 tell Soyinka I liked his books when I was younger but that is where it ends. Today i reject his stupid, foolish insignificant statement.”
