U.S Newspaper, Washington Times Attacks Buhari For Refusal To Respect The Rule Of Law

A Washington Times report has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari over the current ordeal of former National Security Adviser Col.Sambo Dasuki (rtd) who had been under house arrest since November 4, despite a subsisting court order which granted him permission to embark on a medical trip abroad.

Dasuki who was former President Goodluck Jonathan’s National Security Adviser and served briefly in that capacity under the current government, is currently standing trial on a two-count charge of money laundering and illegal possession of firearms before a Federal High Court in Abuja. The court however granted the former NSA, who had been on bail, permission to embark on a medical trip abroad. Operatives of the DSS however continued to lay siege to his residence thereby frustrating his travel plans.

Penultimate week, Dasuki returned to court to report the government for refusing to allow him enforce his fundamental human rights. The Federal High Court consequently reaffirmed its order allowing him to travel abroad for medical attention and ordered the DSS to vacate his residence – an order which the department had yet to comply with, insisting that the former NSA has questions to answer about a $2billion arms deal.

The US newspaper report titled ‘Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dupes the US’, slammed the President for “uttering time-worn democracy vows” during his visit to the US, where he promised “to combat graft with procedures that would be “fair, just, and scrupulously follow due process and the rule of law, as enshrined in our constitution.”

It said, “After celebrating fairness, due process, and the rule of law last July to win the goodwill of the United States, Mr. Buhari returned to Nigeria to mock all three in a vendetta against Dasuki, the immediate past National Security Adviser.

“He placed Mr. Dasuki under house arrest. He confiscated his passport. He charged him with firearms and money laundering violations. He sought a secret trial to prevent independent scrutiny.

“He opposed Mr. Dasuki’s pretrial application to the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja for permission to receive urgent medical treatment for cancer in London, but it was nonetheless granted.

“Justice Adeniyi Ademola explained that an accused is presumed innocent before trial, and that a citizen’s health is paramount before the law. Mr. Buhari was ordered to release Mr. Dasuki’s international passport.

“Mr. Buhari defied the order. He put Mr. Dasuki’s house under siege, a microcosm of the Bosnian Serb siege of Sarajevo. Mr. Dasuki returned to court. Justice Ademola reaffirmed his order, asserting “My own orders will not be flouted.”

“Mr. Buhari has not yet budged. As a military dictator in 1985, he similarly seized the international passport of Chief Obafemi Awolowo to thwart his travel for medical treatment, which caused his death in 1987. The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Calling Dasuki’s situation an “ongoing persecution,” the Washington Times report noted disparagingly that “Members of Nigeria’s National Assembly and Senate have been reduced to playing the roles of extras in cinematic extravaganzas.”

Recalling some of the low points of the Buhari military regime in the ‘80s, the newspaper report said the era “was earmarked by chilling human rights abuses,” which it said included, “draconian edicts, exemplified by Decree 20 under which the judicial murders of Nigerian citizens Lawal Ojuolape, Bernard Ogedengbe, and Bartholomew Owoh were authorised.”

It noted that Ogedengbe was executed for a crime that did not carry the death penalty at the time it was committed in violation of the universal revulsion of EXpost facto laws.

Quoting Nobel Prize laureate Wole Soyinka, it said “these crimes were executed in defiance of pleas from virtually every sector of Nigeria and the international community—a grisly precedent for subsequent dictator Sani Abacha’s hanging of Ogoni activist Ken Saro-Wiwa in contempt of international opinion.”

It further noted that Buhari’s brutal military dictatorship was overthrown in 1985, adding, “Mr. Dasuki played a key role. Dictators do not forget. Fast forward to today.”

Arguing that much is riding on Dasuki’s case, it said “if Mr. Buhari flouts Justice Ademola’s order with impunity, judicial independence will be fatally compromised and Nigeria’s embryonic democratic dispensation will be stillborn,” adding, “The judiciary is the only branch capable of checking limitless executive power—the bane of Africa.”

It also said such actions could work against peaceful transfer of political power on the continent as incumbents would be afraid of being persecuted by their successors.

“President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration accepted a peaceful transfer of power to President Buhari, a laudable landmark in African politics. If Mr. Buhari is permitted with impunity to destroy his political opponents like Mr. Dasuki with tyrannical methods, peaceful transfers of power everywhere on the Continent will become problematic. The incumbents’ risk of political and personal impalement at the hands of their would-be successors will be too high.”

The report called on the United States to insist on independent human rights observers to monitor Dasuki’s prosecution and trial, and a demand that President Buhari honours his vow to follow due process and the rule of law.
“The stakes are too high to remain silent,” it added.

Presidency Says Pro-Biafra Protests Will Hurt The People Of The South East

Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, has said that the South East region would be hurt by the agitations and protests for the creation of a Biafran state.

Adesina says unless the current strategy being employed is changed, the region will be greatly affected by the ceaseless protests and agitations for secession.

In a recent interview with Vanguard, Adesina said: “Although the government has to play a leading role, it is not the duty of the Federal Government alone. It is the duty of all Nigerians.”

“Some parts of the country are still in the pre-election mood, which should not be. Elections are over, a government has been sworn in, we should team up as Nigerians, reconcile and move our nation forward.”

“I believe the region where such (regional unrest) is happening, at the end of the day, would hurt itself more, unless the people quickly change their strategy.

So it is a collective responsibility of all Nigerians, not just for the Federal Government.”

The CBN Reveals That Nigeria Is Losing N256bn Monthly To Crash In Oil Price

The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, at the annual Bankers’ Dinner organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria disclosed on Friday night, talked about how the nation is losing N256bn monthly to pil price crash.

Excerpts of his remarks can be read below…
“Given the sharp fall in oil prices, federation allocation to states have dropped by an average of about N2bn for each month.
“Similarly, average inflows of foreign exchange into the CBN have fallen to by about $1.3bn per month; this has led to a sharp decline in our forex reserves from as high as $37bn as at June 2014, to $30bn.

He said the nation needs to stop to importing everything. He encouraged Nigerians to patronize locally made goods in a report filed by PUNCH.

Despite the huge drop in the nation’s forex earnings as a result of the fall in crude oil prices, the CBN boss said Nigeria’s import rose to N917bn in September and might likely hit N1.2tn in December.

“Nigeria cannot continue on this path of importing everything and anything. Indeed, it is both unacceptable and unsustainable and that was the reason we decided at the central bank to prohibit items we can produce here from accessing forex from the central bank.
“The last time we had oil prices at $50 per barrel for an extended period of time was in 2005 and our total import bill for that year was only N148bn. Yet, in the first nine months of this year, our total import bill has already risen to N917bn, and by logical extension, it is heading towards N1.2tn by the end of the year.
“The CBN will in due course embark on a national campaign called PAVE which stands for: Produce Locally, Add Value and Export. We definitely cannot survive as a people by importing everything and anything.’’

Presidency Says Nigeria Does Not Need Help In Ending Terrorism By December

The Presidency has said Nigeria will not seek the help of foreign mercenaries, ahead of the December presidential deadline for the nation’s armed forces to end the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

The remark by Nigeria ‘s Presidency is coming as Nigerian terror group is ranked as the most lethal terrorist attacks in the world, according to the 2015 Global Terrorism Index. The index is produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace based on data from the Global Terrorism Database, which is collected and collated by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, stated this on Saturday in an interview with the PUNCH.

Adesina, who was responding to a question on whether or not President Muhammadu Buhari would ask the military to seek external help in view of recent attacks by the sect, said it was uncharacteristic of the President to direct the military to seek external help in form of mercenaries.

He said Buhari’s position had always been that the nation’s military has the capacity to end insurgency in the country, having performed creditably well in peace-keeping missions in many countries.

Adesina insisted that while the President would appreciate foreign support in terms of equipment, trainings and intelligence, he would not be favourably disposed to mercenaries.

The presidential spokesman said, “The position of the President has always been that he believes the military has the capacity to fight terrorism.

“President Buhari has always made it clear that Nigeria will appreciate support in terms of equipment, training and intelligence. The support the President is seeking is definitely not in terms of manpower or what you will call mercenaries.”

According to the report, Iraq had 25 per cent of all terrorist incidents, followed by Pakistan with 14 per cent and Afghanistan with 12 per cent. Nigeria reportedly experienced only five per cent of the incidents but had the second highest number of deaths at 23 per cent.

“Terrorist attacks are much more lethal in Nigeria than any other country. On average there were 11 deaths per attack in Nigeria. In contrast, Iraq had an average of three deaths per attack.

Grace Mugabe Says Women Are To Blame For Rape Because Of Clothes They Wear: Grace Mugabe

The Zimbabwean first lady, 50, told rally-goers in Mberengwa, southern Zimbabwe that “if you are raped, it’s your fault”, according to an update from the private Newsday online.

Speaking in Shona, she reportedly castigated miniskirts.

Mrs Mugabe’s disapproval of miniskirts is well-known: last year she expressed her disgust that then vice president Joice Mujuru had (so the first lady said) worn a short skirt.

“Victim blaming perpetuates the problem,” tweeted @mtchikawa on Friday, complaining that the first lady was “offside”.

“I wonder where she got the empirical evidence to support this claim!!” said @ArtherChatora.

Said @LynnBlaze: “Leaders excusing rape is part of the problem.”

The mother-of-four’s comments are in contrast to those of her husband, President Robert Mugabe, who two months ago said his government was “seriously” considering castrating rapists.

“Don’t say Mr Mugabe is becoming cruel because we want to protect our women. So men, take care,” the 91-year-old told MPs during a luncheon to mark the opening of parliament.

At the rally, the first lady is reported to have declared her “respect” for Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the man some believe she may be hoping to oust for the vice presidency.

“I have respect for this man. VaMnangagwa [Mr Mnangagwa] is my close friend, my best friend,” she said.

Grace Mugabe denied again this week that she wants to succeed her husband as president, but not everyone believes her.

At Friday’s rally in Mberengwa she donated diesel, soap, tractors, shoes, bicycles, suits, cooking oil, maize and rice, according to reports from Newsday and the Herald.

INEC Card Reader Rejects Governor Wada & Wife, Police Decries Poor Welfare

Idris Wada, governor of Kogi state and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the ongoing governorship election, has stormed out of his polling unit in annoyance after the voter card reader of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to accredit him.

At polling unit 001 Odu in Dekina local government area, Wada presented himself for accreditation around 12 noon, but the card reader did not accept his fingerprints.

Wada, whose wife suffered similar fate, filled the incident form thereafter and left in visible anger.

Meanwhule, barely an hour into the accreditation exercise in the Kogi governorship election, some card reader machines have started malfunctioning.

At about 9:30 am, reports from the state revealed that at Polling Unit 015, Ward A in Lokoja, the electoral officers are having a hard task as
one of the card readers won’t recognize finger prints.

The Presiding Officer had put a call through to the operation room for a replacement. Voters on queue were restless due to the development, but efforts by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials calmed frayed nerves. Accreditation however went on slowly.

At Polling unit 012, ward A, card readers are selecting the fingers they would identity making the process slow. The problem of finger print
recognition is widespread, and the affected persons had to fill the incident forms.

According to reports, distribution of kits and electoral materials started about 7:20 a.m. at INEC headquarters on Marine road. Vehicles carrying electoral personnel are moving to different local government areas.

However, Situation Room observed yesterday that welfare of security personnel deployed is not properly taken care of. Two of the police
officers deployed to Dekina LGA, Idris Wada’s LGA, were complaining over poor welfare.

Although 22 political parties have been recognized by the INEC to participate in the elections, only four parties have so far shown considerable desire to be taken seriously for the election. They are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whose candidate is the incumbent
governor, Captain Idris Wada; Abubakar Audu of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Philip Omeiza Salawu of Labour Party (LP), and Mr. Enesie Emmanuel Ozigi of the Progressive Peoples Allienace (PPA).
