Nigerian Governors Wives Accompany Aisha Buhari On A Visit To Bola Tinubu At Bourdillon Over Emir Of Borgu’s Demise

Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), played host to Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari at his Bourdillon residence in the Ikoyi area of Lagos on Saturday.

According to Sunday Dare, spokesman of Tinubu, the president’s wife visited the notable politician to commiserate with him over the death of Haliru Dantoro, emir of Borgu kingdom in Niger state.

Dare said the former governor of Lagos commended Buhari’s wife, who was accompanied by the wives of different governors, “on her Style and commitment to Nigeria”.

Tinubu is known to be very close to the late monarch, who gave him his famous traditional title –‘Jagaban Borgu’ – in 2006. Both men were members of the upper chamber of the national assembly between 1992 and 1993.

Back in 2006 when the APC leader was turbaned, Dantoro spoke on his relationship with Tinubu. “It was in the days of the ill-fated third republic, in the fateful year of 1992 that my path first crossed that of His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he had said.

Aisha Buhari meets Tinubu

“We were both elected into the senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he as an SDP Senator and I on the platform of the NRC. “Though from opposing sides of the political divide, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and I, gradually discovered that our positions on issues of burning national importance increasingly propelled both of us and few other like-minded patriots in the same political direction…

He is a die-hard workaholic.” Tinubu was among the dignitaries who attended the burial of Dantoro.

At the ceremony he said: “He was a very close friend and compatriot, and his death is a very personal loss to me.

Particularly, it was very painful when I saw him on Wednesday; he was looking radiant and ready to come back home.”

After Casting His Ballot, Abubakar Audu Of The APC Confident Of Emerging Kogi Governor

The All Progressive Congress, APC, governorship candidate, prince Abubakar Audu cast his vote in the ongoing governorship election in Kogi state.

Audu voted at exactly 1.40 pm at polling unit 002 at the LGEA, school, Ogbonicha in Ofu Local Government Area of the state. He was successfully accredited via the card reader device at 12.19pm.

Audu while speaking with journalists shortly after voting, expressed satisfaction over peaceful conduct of the exercise.

The APC candidate said he was optimistic that the electorate will sustain the change mantra by voting for the right party and its candidate.

In Spite Of Economic Challenges, Buhari Says Nigeria On The Rise Again

President Muhammadu Buhari said on Saturday in Jos that Nigeria had entered its glorious era in spite of insecurity and economic challenges.

He stated this on Saturday at the graduation of Senior Executive Course 37 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS) in Kuru near Jos.

Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Buhari said that Boko Haram and other such insurgent groups around the country would soon be consigned to history.

While acknowledging that some issues of agitations by some groups and sections in the country could not be ignored, he said that creating employment opportunities would reduce the tension.

He charged the institute to conduct comprehensive study on causes of insurgency and how to build civil capacity to defeat mindless violence.

“ I want the institute to come up with policies which integrate needs of the vast majority of the populace and not just based on GDP projections.

“MNI’s end up in their offices after their course of study at NIPPS, without the required enthusiasm to enforce implementation of the policies they made.

“I think we must encourage ourselves and take ourselves seriously instead of doing this just to take a title.

“The institute will find a way of monitoring members instead of just producing high quality results which just die here.

“Let’s make efforts to see that those who implement policies use them, “ he said.

The president said that his administration would support the institute with funding, but remarked that corruption was the bane of the nation’s development.

“What has eluded our leadership is not lack of good policies but strength of character to implement them.

“Our problem is not legislative, but lack of political will and weak legal process- delay in the judiciary and suppression of the entire legal system, “ he said.

He, however, said that his administration would address this and other distortions in the system on which corruption of leadership thrived.
Buhari called on persons and interest groups within the country to submit to peaceful means of expressing themselves without violating the laws of the land.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 63 persons graduated as Members of the National Institute (MNI) at the ceremony, bringing the total number of its granduands since inception in 1979 to 1,784.

I’m APC, But I Want Governor Wada Of PDP To Win — Says Senator Kadiri

An APC gubernatorial aspirant, Senator Alex Kadiri has expressed support for the second term ambition of Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State.

Chief Kadiri who lost the APC ticket to Prince Abubakar Audu, the party’s flag bearer in today’s election, spoke to journalists at Odu Ogboyaga ward 001 in Dekina Local Government and said Wada is the best among all the gubernatorial candidates.

The non serving senator expressed his happiness over the peaceful nature of the polls so far, though he admitted that he is yet to get reports from other polling units.

In the same vein, a second class traditional ruler, Chief Salifu said from the reports he has received so far, the election is going on peacefully.
“I have been talking to my people to cast their votes and go back. This is what I have been telling them,” said Chief Salifu.

“Needless Acts Of Vendetta” APC Slams Nyesom Wike Over Retirement Of 14 Perm Secretaries

Press Releases

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, views the compulsory retirement of 14 Permanent Secretaries in the Civil Service of the Rivers State Government by Gov. Nyesom Wike as an act conceived and executed in bad faith to punish people, relations or spouses of those perceived to have worked for the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi administration or sympathetic to the APC.

The APC considers the sudden retirement of these exemplary senior civil servants as a vindictive act by Governor Nyesom Wike. Whereas these individuals toiled to keep the civil service of the State, which is the engine room of government, working for the good of the people, Nyesom Wike has decided to punish them for doing their legitimate duties as civil servants. Instead of acknowledging and rewarding them with recognition, the vengeful governor decided to summarily send them away on compulsory retirement just to exact needless pound of flesh.

The APC similarly notes that Gov. Wike has formally shut down the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency [RSSDA]. Instead of the governor tasking his intellect for once to find an acceptable solution to the matter or doing the very basic thing of paying the seven months salaries owed the RSSDA workers from the numerous bank loans he has collected, he rather chose the primitive option of closing down the agency and had the shameless audacity to formally announce the mean decision yesterday.

The APC condemns these wicked decisions by Wike and urge those directly affected to remain strong and prayerful as God will ultimately see off the Wike rogue regime. There is no doubt at all that God will complete what he has started by getting the so-called election of Governor Nyesom Wike finally dumped into the abyss of history very soon.

Adewunmi Emoruwa: Owambe Diplomacy, Nigeria Must Change Its Steps On The Foreign Relations Dance Floor

Time Magazine, October 20, 1961, carried an opinion titled ‘The Pride of Africa.’ The piece chronicled the 1st Foreign Affairs Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the late Jaja Wachuku of the Ngwa royal dynasty. With all due respect, the Nigerian Foreign ministry has since groped for direction and – with a few exceptions – has been largely unimpressive.

As my heart retains the last vestiges of Nigerian finesse on the diplomatic front, I write this groaningly – what a time to be born!

The Foreign affairs Minister ought to be the 3rd most powerful cabinet member as Jaja Wachuku was in the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa government. That’s also the case in countries after which we have modeled our democracy such as the United States of America, where the Secretary of State – their own foreign affairs minister – comes only after the VP in Executive relevance.

Unfortunately, in Nigeria, Foreign Ministry or diplomatic representative assignments are being allotted as some form of political compensation for election losers, mediated step-downers or some high stake game of political demystification – a form of exile for heavyweights possessing capacity to wrestle and control incumbent power structures. We don’t want him here – Send him abroad Shikena!

This is responsible for the number of unprepared and unserious diplomats this country has churned out in recent times. A story of a Nigerian Ambassador in an European Country was once told, and boy he was loved for the quality of parties or Owambes he threw hence the title of my piece as similar tales of Nigerian diplomats have been regaled likewise.

I opine that our Foreign Affairs Ministry if properly leveraged is more important than the Nigerian Petroleum Ministry as it holds the capacity to drive the Economy in terms of Trade, Investment and Infrastructure, uphold Nigeria’s Sovereignty by maintaining Peace and Security both internally and regionally ensuring stability and prosperity, which is a must if Nigeria must succeed.

What must we do?
The most important thing for Geoffrey Onyeama, the new man in charge of Foreign affairs is to protect the dignity and rights of a Nigerian citizen on foreign soil; this includes the various embassies and visa processing centers in Nigeria where our citizens are being disrespected and dehumanized on a regular basis. I get upset reading and hearing stories of extrajudicial murders, wanton arrests based on suspicions and profiling, maltreatment and exploitation of Nigerian students and workers in the diaspora – all of these without intervention or corresponding action by our foreign representatives. This nonchalance is attributable to the widespread belief that ‘Nigerians are unruly’ and deserve to be treated so, except of course ‘you be big man pikin’. Nigeria will never attain any meaningful progress on the foreign front without recognizing and demanding respect for the least of its citizenry.

The recognition of this observation was the beginning of the rise of the Philippines diplomacy. The story of Flor Contemplacion, a Filipina domestic helper in Singapore who was hanged on unproven suspicions of murder by the Singaporean government led to the enactment of the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995 which revolutionized their diplomacy forever, making it a worthy reference for any country in our context that is desirous of Change in approach to diplomacy and of respect.

This must be backed by a strong statement of purpose and circulated to our citizens as well as missions of other States. The last time the Nigerian government proved worthy was unfortunately because the South African Immigrations seemingly harassed a Nigerian Senator. And I have heard a lot of reports of exploitation and disrespect to Nigerians by their consulate.

Secondly, the Nigerian Foreign affairs ministry must engage the Nigerians in Diaspora more strategically. As currently structured, engaging the Nigerian Diaspora through a very politicized NIDO (Nigerians in Diaspora Organization) is not the best approach. An audit of Nigerian groups in the diaspora from Faith, to Scholastic fora and Student bodies, Ethnic Support unions, or Amala, Akpu and Suya food spots must be conducted and key contact data collected and mainstreamed. Nigeria cannot afford to overlook the Diaspora in National Development.

According to a Word Bank report the Nigerian Diaspora in 2010 sent $20 billion back home. This remittance amount represents a greater GDP than over 30 African countries with a peerless 26% annual growth rate.

There are 3 categories of our diaspora in my opinion; The Economically empowered settler, the settled but economically struggling, the unsettled either empowered or disempowered – they all in one form of the other contribute to the economy – efforts could be made to aid return and reintegration, urge economic assistance over non impactful handouts with business support initiatives, Skills transfer and inclusively managed diaspora fund raising initiatives (Bonds, Philanthropy) for infrastructural and socioeconomic development.

Thirdly, Nigerian soft power must be leveraged. I grew up convinced by the falsehood that we are the giants of Africa. I am sorry we are not and we need to see ourselves more as Davids than the Goliaths on this continent. We don’t need spears; we have our stones and sticks. The Foreign affairs minister must be obsessed about the Nigerian Culture – I mean to say the Hip culture, which dominates Africa through Nollywood and the Nigerian Music Industry. He must be obsessed about the Nigerian Faith – not juju, our unique form of religion that is attracting adherents from all over the world – The Adeboyes, Oyedepos, Oyakhilomes of this world. He must work directly with these ones to leverage their influence and presence on the continent. I believe with such followership they can drive the adoption of Nigerian food, fashion and style, ideas and taste, writings and art etcetera. We all can imagine what potentials this holds for Nigerian businesses and our ‘imperialism’. You can start to imagine the Nigerianization of our Products.

At an African store in the UK – I once saw packaged Ghanaian Jollof, imagine that! Me I no gree! Hides from Kano tanneries are labeled Moroccan Leather in the global commodities market. This has to stop before Togo claims our Ofada. Nigerianization must begin now.

So much can be said about Economic soft power such as matching our aid, grants, loans and assistance to economically disadvantaged neighbours to our advantage but this is a topic to be discussed another day,

Finally, our missions do not portray Nigeria rightly, not at all. This has to change. I can’t but agree with President Buhari on the need to close some Nigerian Missions especially if considered unviable. The few ones left must be effectively equipped, funded and rehabilitated aesthetically. We are not a war torn county. We want investments not aid. However, a proximal presence for our well-dispersed citizens must be guaranteed. Nigeria should explore designating proven foreigners as our honorary consuls in these regions where our missions are to be scrapped as well as parts of the world where Nigerians are present but our government is not.
I wish our new foreign affairs minister a good time in office and if I may ask; will you rock native wears, will our missions use Innoson cars?

Senate Committee Chair On Ethics & Privileges Says He Will Not Do The Biddings Of Saraki In Probing CCT Chair

Senate’s Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition, said it would not do President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki’s bidding on the petition against Code of Conduct Tribunal Chairman, Danladi Umar in ongoing investigation of probe.

Sen. Sam Anyanwu (PDP-Imo East), said his committee will not do the biddings of Senate President Bukola Saraki, on the petition against Chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Mr Danladi Umar.

Chairman of the committee, Sen. Sam Anyanwu, stated this while reacting to allegation that the committee would likely do the biddings of Saraki, who is standing trial before CCT over alleged false declaration of assets.

Anyanwu said in Abuja that the committee owed Nigerians and nobody else, the responsibility to treat the petition on merit.

According to him, the fact that the petition is coming at a time when Saraki is standing trial at the CCT will not stop the committee from carrying out its constitutional responsibility creditably.

“Once the petition against Danladi is sent to our secretariat, we will take a look at it, and be rest assured that if we find nothing in the petition, of course, we will write our report.

“I want to say that I am not doing anybody’s bidding; I have the capacity and I make researches and I have time for fact-finding and come out with a position.

“Why should Saraki use me to do his bidding? Why would Saraki use any senator to do his bidding?

“He is my colleague; he is just the Senate President, one among equals.
‘’He was elected by his constituents and my constituents brought me here. So, it not about doing Saraki’s bidding.

“If I have a responsibility to discharge my duty based on the petition because I am Chairman of Ethics and Privileges, I will do it; the most important thing is your conscience,’’ he said.

The lawmaker said that the National Assembly was determined to support President Muhammadu Buhari in the fight against corruption.

He said that the legislature would stop at nothing to ensure that
Nigeria assumed its pride of place in the comity of nations.

On whether Nigerians would have faith in the committee following issues around the confirmation of nomination of Minister of Transport, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, in spite of its recommendation, Anyanwu said Nigerians believed in the committee.

He said that no fewer than 42 petitions were pending before the committee and assured that all would be attended to.

“Our report on Amaechi cannot be faulted in any way. We have received commendations from over five Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) for standing firm.

“Through our probe, even ordinary Nigerians who were wrongfully dismissed from their offices, who did not have money to go to court or fear of persecution, their consolation was the senate.

“When we ask agencies to re-instate people who were wrongfully dismissed, we equally insist that such persons are not victimised. This is people’s parliament; we are the voice of the voiceless.

“I do not have any grudges against anybody; I am only doing my job. I am one man nobody can put in the pocket.

‘’I don’t fight for anybody, I do the right thing. If people do not have confidence in this committee, they will be demoralised and discouraged from sending in petitions,’’ he said.

The Senate on Thursday received a petition alleging impropriety against the CCT chairman.

The petition, which was presented on the floor of the Senate by Sen. Obinna Ogba (PDP-Ebonyi Central), was signed by one Ajaso I. Ajaso on behalf of a group, Anti Corruption Network.

Oshiomhole Stands By Labour, On Minimum Wage Cut Debate

By Chris Nomjov

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has differed with fellow governors on the view to reduce the monthly minimum wage being paid to workers.

Oshiomhole said as a former labour man, he cannot question the wisdom behind the national minimum wage, which was fought for years ago.

Governor Oshiomhole was reacting to the suggestion by some members of the Governors Forum, within the week, that the salaries may be cut and staff downsized, to cushion the effect of the present economic difficulties.

The governor spoke on the matter on Friday, when factional presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrades Ayuba Wabba and Joe Ajaero, attended the first Central Working Committee ,CWC, meeting organised by labour veterans and stakeholders.

“I am a labour man, I have been clear with my colleagues in seeking to find solution to the problem we face. We have to be holistic, we cannot at one hand question the wisdom behind the national minimum wage. I joined the NLC to protest to the National Assembly when they were going to amend the constitution to make the minimum wage a concurrent issue.

“I said workers have a stake in this democracy. They are the ones who could afford to march the streets and they march the streets for democracy. Democracy doesn’t have to run at the comfort or convenience of governors, ministers, and presidents.

“I believe that the issue in the economy hasn’t got to do with minimum wage. I have always also reminded my colleagues that the minimum wage was not imposed, it was negotiated and state governments agreed to it, the president signed it not under duress, there was no strike to compel the then president to sign it, he signed it voluntarily.

“I believe when you look at the minimum wage, as it is today at N18,000, it is less than 100 dollars. I think it is now about eighty dollars. Now, divide eighty dollars by 31 days, you will be getting about two point something dollars.

“Now we cannot argue that workers in Nigeria formal sector should not earn more than two dollars a day, I cannot subscribe to that because the heart of governance is the welfare of the people.”

“Let me also say that I acknowledge that there are huge issues with the economy, there are huge issues about management capacity and I have been loud about the massive abuse and the looting of our common patrimony.

My only complain is that the NLC voice was not loud when it matters, when the looting was going on, there was what I can call a criminal silence by the NLC. When the CBN governor raised the alarm, the NLC would have risen as a partner and I have always warned that the consequences of what the big people would do, will always fall on the small people.

“It is NLC business to interrogate every policy that will have immediate or long time consequences. What we have now is the medium term consequences of the massive looting and the gross mismanagement of our economy at the time when the oil peaked at $108, now at under $50, we are suffering a huge drop of 50 percent of national revenue and with a huge debt profile.

“So, on the one hand, you are looking for huge resources to settle debts incurred even in the midst of plenty and having to grapple with basic needs at the moment when oil prices have crashed. For me even if you abolish wages, it will not automatically translate to solutions.”

APC Already Rigging Tomorrow’s Poll – Say PDP’s Governor Wada #KogiDecides

Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is already using security agents and
“compromised officials” of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

He alleged that the APC governorship candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu, had bribed the designated returning officer with N1m ahead of the election. “We have received extremely disturbing information about the desperate plan of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rig Saturday’s Governorship Election using the security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army and some unscrupulous INEC personnel. The grand plan, which is already being executed, is designed to impose the APC candidate against the will of the electorate of Kogi State,” he said.

“Specific intelligence gathered by our campaign committee indicates that the APC is involved in the devious strategic posting and deployment of security and electoral personnel in order to achieve their diabolic plan.

A Lieutenant Colonel by the name of Isidore Ama was about two weeks ago redeployed to Kogi State by the army authorities apparently at the behest of the APC to help its election efforts. LT COL Ama, it may interest you to know, headed a team of soldiers that invaded the country home of Senator Atai Aidoko of the Peoples Democratic Party and killed four persons in 2007 during the Governorship Election contested by Alhaji Ibrahim Idris and Mr Abubakar Audu in that year.

“Lt Col Amah had claimed they were in search of arms and thugs. No arms were recovered but PDP supporters who were in the Distinguished Senators premises were mowed down in cold blood. Despite complaints made to the military authorities, we are not aware that this extra-judicial political murder masterminded by this soldier who was then a Captain was ever redressed,” he said.

Group Faults The Invasion Of Bafarawa’s Home And The Continued Detention Of Dasuki

A pro-democracy and human rights group, Coalition Against Injustice, CAI, has faulted the reported invasion of the residence of the former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa by the operatives of the Department of Security Servise (DSS).

It also condemned the Presidency’s arrest order on the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), describing the actions as, “the return of dark days in Nigeria.”

In a statement jointly signed by its National Coordinator and National Secretary respectively, Messrs Isa Tijjani and Yerima Shetima, the group viewed the two developments as “crass exhibition of dictatorial tendencies and an attempt to return Nigeria to the dark days of the era of Military dictatorship exemplified by the statement emanating from the Presidency directing the arrest of Col Sambo Dasuki rtd and others by the President.”

According to the statement, no one is sympathetic, backing or shielding those that committed crimes against the nation, but it is worrisome to note that, “such a statement from the President not only smacks element of vindictiveness but already comprises the case even before commencement.”

While it wondered whether the Presidency has now assumed the responsibility of arresting people, and thereby usurping the duties of agencies like the ICPC, EFCC and the Police, whose responsibility is to arrest and prosecute offenders,” it maintained that, “certainly a court of law and the Presidency cannot arraign anybody.”

Querying whether those people in question could get a fair trial, CAI argued that “the statement from the President has foreclosed that.

Besides, it noted that, “events emanating from President Muhammadu Buhari’s actions have clearly shown that he belongs to himself alone and not to everybody according to his inauguration promise.”

The group also expressed shock over the reported forceful invasion and ransacking of Bafarawa’s residence by the DSS, suspecting that, “the intention was to snatch his passport and stop him from further travelling outside the country.”

The group now reminded that, “Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa is under a valid subsisting bail from a court of law,” suspecting that, Bafarawa’s offence was likely to be his audacity to escort Dasuki to court?

“In the face of the foregoing, we want to be categorical in saying that we will escort Dasuki to court any day he is charged, we will do so to the logical conclusion of the case.

We hasten to remind President Buhari, his government and all his state apparatus that what people gave him were their votes and not their liberty.”

Former EFCC Chairman, Lamorde, Is Asking The Court To Stop Senate From Ordering His Arrest

The immediate past Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Lamorde, has approached a Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking an order restraining security agents from arresting him.

According to court documents made available by Festus Keyamo, his lawyer, Mr. Lamorde is also seeking an order setting aside all letters of invitation issued against him by the National Assembly to appear before them.

“An order of injunction against the 1st and 2nd Defendants restraining them from issuing any Warrant for the ?arrest of the Plaintiff without first issuing a Summons to the Plaintiff,” read Mr. Lamorde’s originating summons.

Joined in the suit are the Senate; the Senate Committee on Ethic?s, Privileges and Public Petitions, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General, Department of State Services as first, second, third, and fourth Defendants respectively.

Mr. Lamorde, a police officer, was removed as EFCC chairman on November 9, four years after he took over as head of the anti-graft agency.
The former EFCC boss? has been replaced by Ibrahim Magu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and a former Head of the Economic Governance Unit of the agency, who was appointed in acting capacity.

Last August, a petitioner, George Uboh, accused Mr. Lamorde of diverting about N1 trillion proceeds of corruption recovered by the agency, prompting a Senate committee to commence an investigation.

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions invited Mr. Lamorde to a “meeting” on August 26 but the former EFCC boss failed to attend.

Another letter of invitation from the Senate committee was sent to Mr. Lamorde proposing another meeting for November 5.
Again, Mr. Lamorde was unable to attend the meeting.
