Kaduna, Plateau & Yobe Attacks Leave About 80 Dead

Approximately 80 lives have been lost in attacks on communities in the Nigerian states of Kaduna, Plateau and Yobe states. About 30 people were killed in two villages in Riyom Local government area. 24 hours earlier, the state police command had met to seek solution to killings in the state.

A local market in Yobe State was also attacked on Monday night and about 20 people were killed. Atakar and Rajak were invaded by gunmen in the wee hours of Monday and shot the villagers to death as others were left with wounds from gunshots and machetes as houses were set ablaze

The member representing Riyom constituency in the state House of Assembly, Mr. Daniel Dem, described the event as pathetic.

“As I speak now, those killed are being given mass burial. Scores that were injured have been taken to the hospitals, while many others have fled their homes to neighbouring villages in Kaduna State,” he said.

Two members of the Special Task Force (STF) in the state also lost their lives.

There is suspicion that the Plateau attacks might have been carried out by Boko Haram members.

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen also killed about 30 persons when three villages in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State were invaded.

Dr Errol Sweeney: The Sir Alex ‘Fear Factor’

With the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson from the touchline, is the fear factor gone for some referees? He certainly appeared to have an intimidatory effect on some refs with his legendary rants and watch pointing.

It has long been speculated that the “red devils” enjoyed preferential treatment in the past from certain top refs operating in the Premier League.

There are many instances when it appeared as though they were getting the “rub of the green” from referees in 50/50 fouls. This year the opposite seems to be the case.

The recent Stoke City versus Manchester United is a case in point.

Even the most neutral football follower could see that the foul on United’s Robin van Persie was a penalty.

What the referee has to decide in situations like this is – was the player impeded and/or/ prevented from challenging for the ball. The video evidence speaks for itself.

Why then didn’t the referee blow for the foul and award a penalty kick? Let me put it another way – if that type of foul had occurred outside the penalty area – say in the middle of the field – would the referee have given a free kick? The answer is a definite yes.
In fact free kicks are given for much less contact. So why then didn’t he award a penalty kick? Only he and the Lord Almighty knows.

The action, or more to the point inaction, by the referee on this occasion leaves us all open to accusations of bias, favouritism, and blatant cheating from fans of the “offended” team and mutterings of disbelief from others.

RvP is generally is not a “diver” unlike some of his fellow professionals who spend more time on the ground than on their feet.

Last year it appeared that Manchester United were “getting everything” from referees, while this year they appear to be “getting nothing.”

What is the reason for this?

Is it because Sir Alex Ferguson was on the touchline and exercised some sort of spell on the match officials?

Now that he’s no longer in charge at Old Trafford and the Sir Alex “fear factor” has disappeared, have the referees changed their way of looking at fouls perpetrated by and on Man United?

Which ever way it is there appears to be a bias against United this term.

Sometimes players can be victims of their own behaviour, or more to the point, misbehaviour. Luis Suarez of Liverpool is one. Ashley Young of Manchester United is another just to name two.

Many times we see players falling down at the slightest touch and rolling around on the ground in apparent agony. The case of Chico Loris of Swansea this last weekend when he succeeded in getting Andy Carroll of West Ham red carded.

What’s most annoying is that referees are allowing themselves to be fooled by this nonsense.

This is a new phenomenon that has only crept into the game in the last few years and is spreading like wildfire. Even children are now replicating what they see their idols doing and no one is prepared to put a stop to it.

I have no doubt that teams have a department within their clubs who are teaching their players how to dive and blatantly cheat in order to gain that added advantage for their team. My problem is that the match officials are allowing it to happen.

Are we now lacking the balls (excuse the pun) to make the decisions that need to be made? Are we scared of the repercussions from the players and managers? Are we afraid of what the papers will say about what we did, or did not do?

Referees are the guardians of the game. We have the power to stop it. We have the means and “tools” to do something about it.

I firmly believe that need to get back to basics. We shouldn’t be called referees; we should be called reactionaries because that’s what we are. We see a situation and we react to it.

How many times have you heard “the ref was great – hardly heard the whistle.” Well my friend that’s because you behaved yourself. No foul – no whistle, simple as that.

Happy Whistling

Sunday Oliseh: Messi must not move

It has been a “high stress” period for Barcelona and Lionel Messi to put it mildly. First, due to a fan-induced probe, Barcelona’s president, Alexandre “Sandro” Rosell was forced to resign his position amid suspicion of wrongdoing (corruption charges) in star player Neymar’s transfer deal.

Now, Paris St Germain of France has decided to stir up the nest further and probably benefit from the relatively weak position at Barcelona. It has announced its willingness to offer a mouthwatering sum to lure Barca’s talisman, Messi, away to Paris.

“Lionel Messi is going nowhere.” That was the defiant message from Barcelona’s new president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, on the prospects of a Messi Move to PSG.

With the World Cup just months away and the Ballon D’or having finally been wrestled away from Messi by a fiery Cristiano Ronaldo, after a four-year wait, what will Messi do next?

One-club man?

Lionel Messi is definitely going down in history as one of the greatest players ever to play soccer. He has broken so many records and we expect him to still break more. There is just one snag. He has broken all those records sporting the “Blau Granata” colours of Barcelona. Would he dare risk a change?

Reunion with Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

Ibrahimovic had a short and unhappy stint at Barcelona. The coach at the time, Pep Guardiola, preferred Messi. It is public knowledge that there is no love lost between these two stars.

Ibrahimovic has been king in Paris for two years now and the team is built around him with some success. Who will take the free kicks and penalties? I see a very complicated situation here.

Playing style

It is no secret that, due to Messi’s stature and playing style, “tiki taka” football is paramount to his success. Paris St Germain play a passing style of football but there are not enough lieutenants like Iniesta, Xavi, Alves andPedro to help bring out the best in Messi at PSG.

It is a completely different playing style, culture and fan base to Barcelona.

Money

Now this is the deciding factor. When the Russians of Anzhi Makhachkala came for Samuel Eto’o for a salary of over $20 million no love of Italian pasta or weather made Eto’o think twice. He was, rightfully, gone in a wink.

The kind of money that is rumoured to eventually change hands should this deal materialise will make Lionel Messi the highest paid and most expensive footballer ever.

This is one factor that pushes sentiments aside for most people but Messi is not most people. Or is he?

Why would PSG want Messi?

He is arguably the best player in the world (though Ronaldo’s fans will disagree) and with Messi in your team you are guaranteed of magic.

The introduction of Messi to PSG would elevate them to triple A world class team status and the media attention and financial benefits it would bring are unquantifiable.

My take!

I really don’t see Lionel Messi choosing to leave Barcelona. He is too smart for that. He has a medical background with Barcelona, the fans love him. He is at an age where now he has to consolidate and not kick-start adventures. Barcelona’s game is tailor-made to suit him. His family speak and breathe Spanish, though they are Argentine, and Ibrahimovic is waiting.

I honestly feel Messi and his advisers increase increment in wages.

He is aware that health issues have plagued him lately and there are definite signs of a need for calm and not expeditions. He knows that nowhere else will his football give him as much fun and nowhere else will he be allowed to chip in “on club decisions” (as was the case when Barcelona sought a new coach).

We football lovers need Messi to stay put. We need the continued rivalry with Ronaldo in the same league week in week out.

Messi must stay at Barcelona!

Joseph Yobo Excited About Return To Norwich City

by George Akpayen

Nigeria defender, Joseph Yobo, has been talking about his loan move from Fenerbahce to English side, Norwich City.

The 33-year-old centre half trained for the first time with his new teammates at Norwich City and was quick to express his happiness on being offered a return to England by the Canaries.

He admitted that joining Norwich City is “a new challenge” which he looks forward to experiencing.

Yobo also disclosed he had other suitors from outside of England but “wanted to come back to the Premier League.”

“I trained yesterday but today it was with the whole squad so I’m happy to be here. I know a few of the players already, it wasn’t entirely new to me but I felt welcome.

“I’m excited that I had this opportunity to come back to England. It’s probably the best league in the world, and it’s a new challenge so I’m looking forward to it.

“There were loads of clubs from abroad who were interested in me, but the manager here convinced me and I wanted to come back to the Premier League.

“We had a week break for Christmas in Turkey, but then two weeks of training after that and it was good, so I’m ready to go,” Yobo told Norwich City’s official website, canaries.co.uk.

The Nigerian centre-back was signed on loan till the end of the season by Norwich City and is expected to be available for Manchester City’s visit to the Carrow Road this Saturday.

Yobo had previously featured in the Barclays Premier League for Everton.

Chaos As Pupils In Osun State Resume In Conflicting Religious Attires

Confusion appeared to be the order of the day on Tuesday as students of Baptist High School, Iwo, Osun state resumed in Islamic regalia, Choir dresses, white garments and all sorts of attires as against the expected school uniformed.

This weird event cannot be attributed to any group or individual yet.

They are suggestions that the strange dress code was to show disapproval of the same uniform introduced by the state government for all schools in the state. They are also insinuations the confusion was as a result of Christian students making an attempt to fight the wearing of  hijabs in schools founded by missionaries.

There is a pending suit on the wearing of Hijab to school at the Osun state high court.

The drama at Baptist High school was so intense that the pupils refused to listen to their teachers as Christian pupils sang hymns and praise songs while their muslim colleagues chanted the Allau Akbar at the same time

Some student however wore the Aregbesola led-state government approved School uniform. Some students who are neither Christians nor muslims also turned up in attires which were representative of their religious belief.

The atmosphere was filled with Chaos as the drama which had begun on Monday morning had grown on Tuesday.

The teachers appeared to have also lost control of the strange situation.

You may recall that the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had protested the wearing of hijab to schools founded by Christians. They believed it was an attempt to undermine the heritage handed down to them by the early missionaries.

In a responsive move, the Joint Muslim Action Forum issued a statement, condemning the protest.

The group were of the opinion that stopping students  from wearing hijabs in Christian schools showed religious intolerance which will not be condoned.

Joe Igbokwe: The Coward Called Asari Dokubo

We live in interesting times in Nigeria today. Cowards and Villains nobody knew when it mattered most in Nigeria between 1985 and 1998 are the ones terrorizing Nigeria today. Lily-livered men without bones who could not raise a voice in the days of locusts are the ones telling us today that they are courageous and strong. Men who are women who could not stand up the way the Late Ken Sarowiwa stood up to Abacha Regime are now the common fools abusing our nationhood.

Now enter Asari Dokubo, the emergency activist, the only bold one in Nigeria, the man stronger than all the armies of Nigeria. Nigeria can never change. Some of the things we accused Northern Military leaders of doing from 1985 to 1998 are repeating itself today in Nigeria. Sectional Politics, Ethnic preoccupation, Mediocracy, Favoritism and impunity are driving leadership in Nigeria today.

When the good man, the late President Yar’ Adua was hospitalized and could not continue in office in his capacity as the president many raised their voices to call for President Jonathan to be sworn in but the coward and opportunist Asari Dokubo did not threaten fire and brimstone.Today Asari Dokubo, the school drop out has become the defender and strong pillar of the President. Asari Dokubo has been making provocative and irresponsible statements abusing everybody who do not share his ideas and sentiments. He has threatened blood shed and war times without number and yet he continues to walk the street as a free man. Others from other sections of the country have been picked up and detained for doing the same thing Asari Dokubo is doing today. Mallam El Rufai was detained in Awka for going to witness Anambra Guber elections. Mallam El Rufai was also questioned recently by SSS for saying that there maybe bloodshed if we mess up with 2015 elections.

Asari Dokubo and Chief Edwin Clark may think they are helping President Goodluck Jonathan but in actions and deeds they are creating big problems for the President. Nigerians know that President Goodluck Jonathan has empowered Asari Dokubo, Chief Edwin Clark and others in such a way that they are now multi billionaires. The world knows that Asari Dokubo and Clark have never had it so good. No wonder both of them are now planning to set up a university each. But success is supposed to be managed. Asari Dokubo and his co-traveller Chief Edwin Clark lack the capacity and the common sense that this is the time for consultations with other Nigerians and not confrontation. Both lack the discipline to consider the feelings of other Nigerians at a time like this. One understands the politics of tribes in Nigeria very well and both have the right to support one of their own but thinking in terms of other people is the way to go for the sake of unity, peace and harmony.

I blame the past presidents of Nigeria for depending so much on crude oil instead of developing other sectors of the economy. Japan has no oil and yet is a world power today. Singapore has no oil and yet it is one of the best countries in the world today. Nigeria can do without oil if and only if we can have a thinking and creative Leader. The world today is thinking of what is in our heads and not what is underground. Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, Ford Motors, Toyota, Mercedes, Intel, Twitter, Panasonic, KIA, Hyundai e.tc. are not oil companies. Asari please take notice that the world is moving away from crude oil.

Asari Dokubo in his stupidity thinks that President Jonathan will be installed into office in 2015 by executive fiat. No sir! It is going to be decided through the ballot box and i know that politics is a game of numbers. We may have been writing Presidential election results in the past but Asari Dokubo must put it in his head that votes will count in 2015. Everybody’s eyes are wide open now and woe betide any crook that will want to do something funny in 2015.

Again we must register into the consciousness of every Nigerian that it is not a must that every President in Nigeria must get eight years in office. The reason why elections are conducted every four years is for the electorates to have the liberty to change a bad leader or to re-elect a good leader. A leader that lacks the capacity to perform should not be re-elected.

All things considered ,there are many compelling reasons why President Jonathan may not be re-elected in 2015. One is that we have to worry about the feelings of other ethnic groups in a democracy. The unity of this country is very important. If the President is re-elected in 2015 he would have ruled for 10years in 2019. I do not think it is fair judging from the circumstances that lead to President Umaru Yar’Adua’s death. Secondly, corruption at the federal level under President Jonathan is alarming and unacceptable. Thirdly, impunity has assumed a frightening dimension under the leadership of President Jonathan. Fourthly, the inability of President Goodluck Jonathan to tackle the problem of insecurity is threatening also. In the midst of plenty our institutions are collapsing with no end in sight. The power sector is still down.

Asari Dokubo must shut up now and hold his peace. The best he can do now is to start moving round the country with the billions President Jonathan has provided for him to canvass for votes for Jonathan. Asari Dokubo cannot continue to preach hate to the Northerners and yet still think they will vote for President Jonathan. I plead that the loquacious Chief Edwin Clark should do the same. This is the only way to help President Jonathan to win in 2015.

Chris Brown Is Making Progress But Still Stuck In Rehab

Superior Court Judge, James Brandlin has denied a prosecution request involving singer, Chris Brown. The request cited Chris’ progress and good behaviour during rehabilitiation.

In November, Chris was sentenced to three months of in-patient rehab after being arrested and charging him for a Washington DC fight which involved him and a bodyguard.

The rehab conditions suggested by probation officers who are upon his sentence for attacking then girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 were accepted by Breezy.

Judge Brandlin confirmed the singer had completed 191 of 1,000 hours of community service that were prescribed. The case will return to court on the 28th of February when the Judge will be expecting an update as regards the singer’s progress

The Judge revealed probation officials reported that Brown “appears to have a more serious and responsible demeanour” since checking into rehab.

This is what the mag wrote:

While preparing for her role as Gloria Gaines in the critically acclaimed film Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Oprah Winfrey’s acting coach told her she should be more sexy. “I don’t think of myself as being sexy and I’m not even sure how one is sexy,” she admits. Her acting coach instructed her: “Every time Gloria walks, pretend that she has a tail. And when Gloria sits down, she doesn’t sit without making sure there’s room for her tail.”

Chiwetel Ejiofor made a huge splash in this year’s 12 Years a Slave, but the role was a difficult one for the actor. He described it as walking the “fine line in between sanity and insanity.” After filming wrapped, it took the actor two months to “come out of it.” He describes why he pushed himself to the limit for the film: “Even though there were emotional moments to shoot, overall I think every member of the cast and crew was there for one reason: They felt it was a tale that deserved to be told.”

Senator Saraki Mobilise Support For Jonathan & Kwara PDP

Gbemi Saraki
Former Kwara State Senator, Gbemisola Saraki, a sister to Bukola Saraki has begun to mobilise support for the People’s Democratic Party in the state in order to strengthen the party after a massive defection of a faction of the PDP to the All Progressive Congress.

Through the Gbemisola Rukayat Saraki platform, the former Senator intends to increase support for the PDP and the new national leader of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, the state leader of Kwara Democrats, one of the main affiliate groups of the GRS, Aliyu Ibrahim, said the GRS was also to support the programmes and policies of President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said, “The current mobilisation and consolidation of all GRS groups under our leader’s PDP structure was informed by the recent political development in the state. You know that the GRS support base is widespread and highly diversified.

“With the exit of a faction of PDP, other party leaders in the state have all agreed to work together. It is therefore necessary that we consolidate our structure towards achieving a unity of purpose.

“The GRS organisation, being one of the backbones of PDP in Kwara State, will do whatever is required to strengthen the party. We have a clear directive from Saraki herself on the need to build a formidable PDP along with other party leaders in the state to provide an unflinching support to President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Of course, we know we cannot achieve that without giving our utmost support to our new national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu. This is what we are doing. In the next few weeks, Nigerians will witness a massive transformation of our party in Kwara State. PDP remains the party to beat in Kwara and GRS is a key factor in the party.”
