Mourinho Refuses To Succumb To Journalistic Platitudes; Insists Chelsea Is Not At The Top Yet

Jose Mourinho is having none of the journalistic platitudes  about his Chelsea side being top of the English Premier League side despite on top at the moment with a four-points lead over Liverpool and Arsenal.

The Chelsea manager is of the opinion that his side are on top just temporarily as they have played more games than title rivals, Manchester City who he still fancies as favourites for the premier league crown. Speaking to reporters ahead of his side’s game this Saturday against London rivals,  Tottenham, Mou had this to say:

“I’m not top of the league, that’s the problem,”

“I’m only really top of the league the day my team have played the same number of matches as the other teams, and I have more points.”

“If that happens, I can say I’m top of the league. Until that moment, if other teams have matches in hand and can be top of the league if they win them, they are top of the league.”

“So at this moment I’m not top of the league.”

Manchester City faces Wigan in a FA Cup action on Sunday meaning that Chelsea could further extend their lead at the top if they can beat Tottenham at Stamford bridge on a Saturday

Abdusalam Abubakar: Nigeria’s Continued Existence As A Nation Could Be Decided By 2015 Elections

Nigeria’s former Head of State, Abdulsalam Abubakar on Thursday in Abuja stated that the continued existence of Nigeria as a nation could be determined by the 2015 general elections.

He made this comment while speaking at the 2nd edition of the Peoples Media Limited, PML, Conference, tagged “Nigeria, the 2015 Question” . In Abubakar’s words:

“As political animals that we are, nothing seems to have gripped our imagination of Nigerians as the issue of the coming 2015 general elections which in my view is a watershed moment in the history of our dear country,” he said.

“The way we are able to handle this very important event will largely determine how successful we will be in our efforts at remaining a united, indivisible and stable country.

“Already, the fault lines are apparent and politicians are ready to exploit them to the fullest to achieve their sometimes not so noble objectives. The 2015 elections are, among other things, expected to determine where power will reside.

“The North is determined to have it back and its leaders are pulling all the stops to see that that happens. On the other hand, the body language of the incumbent president strongly suggests he wants another term.”

He states that if Nigeria could get it right in the forthcoming elections, we would have proven a great point for our democracy.

The Nigerian Army through a statement by its Director Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade has revealed that Nigerian security forces operating with the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) yesterday repelled a dusk attack by terrorists in their bid to overrun markets in communities in the outskirts of Monguno and NNPC at New Marte, Borno State along Chadian border.

More assaults and encounters are continuing in other identified locations as intelligence sources confirm the routes being used by the fleeing terrorists. Troops have been directed to sustain aggressive patrols in certain areas where terrorists’ actions are anticipated.

International Women’s Day: Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan Canvasses for More Opportunities for Women

As the world marks the International Women’s Day, the First Lady of Nigeria has advocated for increased opportunities for women. The first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who doubles as the President of African First Ladies Peace Mission, Dr. Patience Faka Jonathan has stated that the time has come to further strengthen and broaden the opportunities available to women for rapid national transformation. This was contained in her message to mark this year’s International Women’s Day.

Mrs Jonathan maintained that women’s empowerment and gender equity must be given priority in order to achieve sustainable development. In her words,

“Now is the time to listen to the voices of women, to fully engage them and to make women’s empowerment and gender equity a priority.”

The Nigerian first lady is pleased by this year’s theme, “Equality for women is progress for all” for its global undertone. She described it as a suitable theme because it draws awareness to the importance of women and gender inclusion.

“We must promote and sustain the tempo of socio-economic and political inclusion of women so that they can contribute their quota meaningfully to the Transformation Agenda of Government,” she added

She also advocated for further investment in women and the girl child as she maintained that women and girls must be empowered to reach their full potentials for sustainable development.

While felicitating with all women across the globe, Dame Jonathan called on men to also celebrate the spirit and strength of women. She stated that the continuous strides and achievements women make each day, in their communities and beyond, should be appreciated and applauded, especially as the world marks International Women’s Day. She however cautioned that the day should also serve as a reminder that much more needs to be done to overcome the discrimination, challenges and barriers that confront women simply because of their gender.

The First Lady who described herself as a passionate advocate of gender inclusion, pledged to continue to work with great commitment with other African First Ladies across the continent, to promote gender equity, in her capacity as the President of the African First Ladies Peace Mission.

March 8 every year is observed and celebrated around the world as International Women’s Day. The day highlights the growth and achievements of women in the developed and developing world.

“Equality For Women Is Progress For All”; International Women’s Day 2014 Is Tomorrow

Equality is empowerment; our society must support women as they thrive to care and nurture while contributing their quota to national development says Mrs. Kehinde Osinowo, Director of Programs of Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH)

The empowerment of women is critical to sustainable development as women are playing crucial role in supporting national development efforts but gender inequality continues to hinder women’s growth, contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.  Inequality can increase HIV infection rates, and reduce the ability of women and girls to cope with the epidemic. Often, Women have less information about family planning, HIV and fewer resources to take preventive measures. Women face barriers to the negotiation of safer sex, because of unequal power dynamics with men. Sexual violence, a widespread violation of women’s rights, exacerbates the risk of HIV and other STIs transmission while capacity gaps mean women remain less likely than men to have the education, contacts and resources needed to become effective leaders. This clearly means that more investment in women is needed

As a leading Non-governmental organization in Nigeria, Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH) remain committed to the empowerment of women in Nigeria through her innovative programmes on Sexual and reproductive health include family planning, capacity building and mentoring programs while putting women and girls at the centre of development efforts.  As the 2015 target date for reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) approaches, ARFH calls for more direct investment in women and free & compulsory education for girls.  ARFH will be celebrating a group of women who have inspired change demonstrated acts of courage and determination and have played an extraordinary role in fight against HIV/AIDS and promote Family Planning in Nigeria in an effort to reduce maternal and child mortality

The International Women’s Day with the theme “Equality for women is progress for all” is a time to reflect on progress made on the empowerment of women and.  ARFH join the international community to celebrate women who despite the odds have excelled in their respective industries. We also congratulate all ARFH amazing women working for a healthier future n Nigeria.
