Gbenga Kayode: YouWiN As Lifeline For Jobless Youths

Unemployment among our youth is one of our biggest challenges. The time has come to create jobs and lay a new foundation for Nigeria’s economic growth.” This statement was made by Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 with respect to the pervasive and disturbing unemployment challenges confronting the Nigerian youth. Despite the sweeping criticisms which tend to trail the announcement of government policies in Nigeria, the administration of Goodluck Jonathan has shown itself being committed to investing in the future of the country and its resourceful and creative youths.

It is in line with this that the administration inaugurated the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWiN!) Programme in 2011 to address this distressing national problem. YouWiN! Has been described as a business competition aimed at job creation by encouraging and supporting aspiring entrepreneurial youth to develop and execute their business ideas. The specially designed competition for young entrepreneurs as well as would-be youthful entrepreneurs in Nigeria is to ensure clarity (as against mere wishful thinking) in the minds of the target group and also to ensure that the Federal Government’s drive to create more jobs, especially young Nigerians, is founded on a solid ground. And the results so far have proved the wisdom of this initiative. The President himself as well as other dignitaries gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the first set of 1,200 YouWiN! Awardees at the Presidential Villa on April 12, 2012. The same was the case with YouWiN! Women, which was the second edition of the entrepreneurial scheme, designed exclusively for young Nigerian female entrepreneurs. It needs restating that since 2011 when the scheme was inaugurated, YouWiN! as an innovative enterprise programme, has enabled young men and women entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 45 to add value to the economy through their Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

I treating the issue of job creation as a matter of utmost national responsibility that the President quickly went ahead to fulfill his campaign promise to build a pool of enterprising, hardworking, accountable and innovative young wealth creators. The N50billion seed fund for job creation (the basis for YouWiN!) was then quickly made available. With the understanding at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) that the nation cannot afford to toy with the future of its youth, it designed the programme to ensure that resourceful young entrepreneurs who qualify can access financial grants up to N10million each to start their SMEs. One other interesting aspect of the unique scheme is that it is collaborative effort among the Federal Ministries of Finance, Communication Technology, Youth Development and Women Affairs and Social Development. This positive partnership is a unique and novel approach to solving an issue as hydra-headed as youth unemployment across the land. But it is not intra-government collaboration alone. To ensure that the programme is successful, YouWiN! is being executed in co-operation with the private sector to ensure proper coordination, diligent implementation, close monitoring and objective evaluation of the scheme. Credible private sector businessmen and women as well as captains of industry have joined hands to provide mentorship and guidance to guarantee that young Nigerians are properly directed while activating their business ideas.

As far as government programmes go, YouWiN! has, indeed, been a noteworthy success. The winners from the last two editions have, in line with the spirit of the project, are creating wealth for themselves while adding considerable value to the lives of other youths and the entire nation. Being a veritable transformation platform, the government has quickly seized on it to actualise the administration’s Transformation Agenda and push the country to join the league of knowledge-driven economies in which youths also apply their creative energies, activate their dreams and contribute to national development. This was attested to by President Jonathan at the launch of the third Edition in November 2013. He announced with a sense of fulfillment even while acknowledging the huge gap that still needs to be plugged, that over 27,000 jobs had been created since the commencement of the YouWiN! He also reiterated his belief in youths, who he described as not only “vibrant” but equally “intelligent, resilient and hardworking”. And as he gave the clarion call to other stakeholders to support the youth empowerment scheme, the President pointedly urged the governors and the National Assembly to collaborate with the FEC in order that the programme could be expanded in other ways, especially at state and constituency levels, so that as many youths as possible can benefit from YouWiN! or entrepreneurial concepts designed along the same lines. And after going round the stands of YouWiN! awardees, who exhibited their products at the launch, President Jonathan remarked that “the exhibition by a few of the awardees which I have just reviewed confirms that our youths are indeed, industrious and highly talented.” Mr President said he was sure that “with targeted support, the products and services on display here will compete with the best in the world. They will not only serve our domestic needs, they are potentially export revenue earners for this country.” With the launch of the third edition, one would like to encourage the organisers to stay in step with the acknowledged transparency which had been the hallmark of the application and selection process. It is this somewhat un-Nigerian approach to the competition that has made it such a credible draw with both the target and general audiences. If this is maintained, there is also every likelihood that it would attract more private sector players to get involved at different levels. With no less personality like Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, being directly involved in the design and execution of YouWiN!, one cannot, but expect that the positive highlights will be maintained and even surpassed. And for the applicants, it bears remembering Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s oft- stated remarks that the scheme was not all about winning money but primarily for empowering young entrepreneurs with the right kind of training to enable them acquire the right attitude and resolve to succeed in the tough business environment.

NCAA Grounds MedView Air

By Kelvin Osa Okunbor

A false fire alarm on an Abuja-bound MedView Airline Boeing 737 from Lagos yesterday earned it immediate grounding by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The acting Director General of NCAA, Benedict Adeyileka, said the action was to enable the agency’s engineers and inspectors as well as engineers of the airline carry out checks on the aircraft.

The plane made an air return five minutes after take- off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, following a false fire alarm.

There were 94 passengers and five crew members on board.

Smoke was noticed in the cabin triggering the alarm, spokesman for the airline, Mr. Oyibotha Obuke, said.

All the appropriate agencies including Airport fire fighters were promptly alerted and were ready for assistance on the tarmac by the time the plane landed.

All the 94 passengers on board were promptly evacuated without disrupting other flights at the airport.

An alternative plane was provided for them to go to Abuja.

One of the passengers, Mr. Longe Olarenwaju confirmed that smoke was noticed on takeoff but by the time the pilot was returning for landing, the smoke had disappeared.

He commended the pilot for the professional way he handled the situation.

Air return is a standard professional practice the world over.

The aircraft now parked at MMA 2 just returned from a major check three weeks ago.

The NCAA acting DG said yesterday that the agency’s engineers had opened up the panels of the aircraft to find out the cause of the fire alarm.

He said that findings so far suggested that the aircraft was in good order, and would be re-certified and released for operations after completion of the necessary checks.

He said the pilot acted in good faith by aborting the flight after passengers exhibited signs of panic, on board.

He said: “We prefer a false alarm to an incident. Air return does not constitute an emergency. The NCAA and its team of inspectors are visibly in the ramp at the airport carrying out routine inspection. Air return is a precautionary safety measure.”

16 Killed In Stampede At Nigeria Immigration Job Test Nationwide

The employment test for recruitment into the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) conducted across the country Saturday turned deadly as stampede at three centres claimed the lives of 16 applicants and left scores injured.

Eight people were feared dead during a stampede at the National Stadium Abuja, five lives were lost at the Liberation Stadium, Elekahia, Port Harcourt, while three applicants were also feared dead in Minna.

However, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that seven people lost their lives and 40 were injured in the stampede in Abuja.

Meanwhile the Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro yesterday blamed applicants for the deaths that occurred at different venues of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment test.

Moro said, “The applicants lost their lives due to impatience; they did not follow the laid down procedures spelt out to them before the exercise. Many of them jumped through the fences of affected centres and did not conduct themselves in an orderly manner to make the exercise a smooth one. This caused stampede and made the environment unsecured.

He also stated that the Deputy Comptroller, Immigration Operations and Passport, told him that the test was cancelled in Lagos due to unruly behavior of the applicants.

19 job seekers including 4 pregnant women lost there lives yesterday in different parts of the country during the NIS recruitment test.

‘Child Abuse Turned Me Gay, I Don’t Know How To Tell My Parents’—24-Year-Old Lawyer

By Peter Akeugo

Thompson Emuche (not real name) is a sad man. At 24, he has a dilemma that he’s afraid to share with his family and friends.

Emuche, a lawyer, is gay. He says sexual abuse by an older male, when he was growing up, altered his sexuality.

Fighting back tears, Emuche recounts his story: “I did not set out to be gay. I do not believe I was born gay; I was abused by an older neighbour when I was young.

“I grew up in a good Christian home. My dad was a traveller and he was never around. So, my mother played a major role in the upbringing of my siblings and I. I had an amazing upbringing, as I never lacked anything. My growth intellectually was above my age, I guess that’s why I am able to remember the things that happened when I was five years old.”

He recalls that he was initially introduced to the act of oral sex at a very tender age.

“We lived in a two-storey building. I was between five and eight years old, but I remember performing fellatio on one of my older neighbours always.

“He used to take me to hidden corners of the staircase, and compelled me to carry out the act on him. He was living with his elder sister. I was in early primary school then, while he was about finishing secondary school.

“As a young and naïve child, the act thrilled me; but I didn’t know what it meant. He was close to my family; I guess that was why my family did not suspect anything,” he says.

According to Emuche, the neighbour left town after he completed his secondary education but the act influenced his sexual attraction to the male sex.

“It gave me a wrong impression of sex and sexual activities in later years. I didn’t get into the act fully, until I got into the university,” he says.

“Between the period of primary school and finishing secondary school, I never had any encounter with a guy; neither did I know there was such thing as being gay, even though I was very brilliant in school. I remember a few guys in secondary school hitting on me, but I never knew what it meant. I just laughed over it,” he adds.

Emuche’s sexual awareness and orientation came to light when he gained admission into the university.

He says, “I eventually gained admission into a university in the northern part of the country. It was far from home. I started getting advances from fellow guys. That was when I became fully aware of the gay scene, but I never knew how it worked. I had my first sexual encounter when I got to my third year in the university.”

After a brief pause, and silence, he returns to his story: “I had a secret admirer right from my first year. We lived in the same hostel and were in the same faculty. Our paths crossed severally and we got talking in second year. That was the first time he told me he was gay and wanted me to be his partner.

“To be frank, I was not interested in the act; so I subtly told him off. He was surprised that I did not raise an alarm or embarrass him like other guys would. So he begged for us to remain friends, so that I could help him academically, since I was better. I never knew he had his agenda.”

Continuing his story, Emuche says, “We became friends in school, and he was overly generous and nice. He would buy me things and give me cash gifts. I accepted them from a friend, not knowing he had his motives. He was actually waiting for the best time to strike.

“One day, in my third year in school, I went to his room to iron my clothes, because I had no power in my room. He was alone and asked me to pass the night. Since that wasn’t my first time, I innocently accepted to pass the night. Then at midnight, he manifested his acts.”

With a tinge of regret, he says, “That was the night I had the first sexual encounter, which would later destroy my life. I was not happy with myself, even though I did not go all the way the first time. But being young and exuberant, my curiosity got the most part of me. I hated him for seducing me, even though I could have said no to his advances. I began to explore, I became randy and promiscuous.

“I am not proud of the things I have done. I never imagined my life would turn out like this. In the course of my escapades, I contracted a sexually transmitted disease (which he didn’t disclose) and I am living with it.

“I wish I could turn back the hands of time to when I was growing up. I believe that abuse fuelled my attraction to the same sex, but I could have chosen not to go into the act. I took a risk and it cost my life.”

Emuche says the news would break his parents’ heart, and he is not prepared to tell them yet.

“That would mean dropping a bombshell. It could kill my parents. I do not plan to tell them now, until I am emotionally stable.

“I know they love me and might understand my predicament since the damage was done in my childhood. I have been battling with this and I believe it is my fight,” he says.

Emuche adds that his elder brother is aware and was ‘disappointed’ when he found out. “He could not believe I was involved in such acts, because everyone looked up to me as a good person.

“He wanted to transfer music from my phone to his. Then a text message dropped in my box, which he read. At first, I denied it when he confronted me, but he was smart. I had no choice but to open up to him. He was speechless, and angry with me for keeping the information from him for such a long time, since we were close.

“He made me promise to stop, which I did, but the damage had already been done as I had contracted the disease. I felt disappointed and embarrassed. He promised to keep it a secret, as long as I gave up the act. I told him how everything started, and he was dumbfounded.

“He is my elder brother, and the only one I could have told, because we are close. I have three other younger siblings and they are not aware. I can’t imagine letting them know,” he adds.

Emuche says being gay is very rampant, but he didn’t talk about his gay partners. He also declined shedding light on the details of his activities with his partners.

“I cannot talk about those activities. I feel ashamed remembering them. Being gay is now a common thing, but that does not make it a good thing. Sometimes, the people you do not expect to be gay are gay, even when they are married or very masculine.

“I am no longer interested in them. I deleted their contacts after my brother confronted me. I feel sorry for myself, because I have not lived the kind of life people thought I lived. Now I have a scar I will live with for the rest of my life.

“I have lived with hatred for the neighbour that abused me (I do not know his whereabouts now) and for the friend that seduced me. But the hatred cannot cure me,” he adds.

Emuche says his orientation affected his relationship with girls. “Presently, I do not have a girlfriend, but I used to have one in secondary school and another in the university, although the first one was not serious.

“The second relationship started when I got into the university, but ended in my final year, because I lost focus and she got tired of the lack of attention. I look forward to having my own family, but no right-thinking lady would want to marry someone like me. I still wish I could have a wife and kids,” he concludes.

Founder of Centre for Sex Education and Family Life, Mr. Praise Fowowe, says there may be different reasons for people’s sexual orientation, but that child abuse is the main cause of same-sex orientation.

He says, “There are different theories about why people are gay or lesbians. The theory of nature says gay people were born gay, while the theory of nurture teaches that people develop the orientation with time.

“I am in the field most of the time. I have observed that all the gays and lesbians I have worked with had their sexuality tampered with at some stage in their life.

“People who turned out gay today, at one time in their life were subjected to some kind of dysfunctionality. Most of them have come to accept that they were born that way, because of what they have been told. It is a conditioning of their mind, and it’s false. When someone consistently believes false information, it becomes his truth.”

Fowowe says there is a need for valid professional therapists to handle the cases.

“A typical gay wants a father. They need to stay with them till they pick up a new habit where they lost it as children. Creating a support system around them is also very crucial,” he says.

Magath Believes Fulham Will Survive Relegation

After watching his team hand him the first victory of his Fulham career, Felix Magath has revealed he believes his side can avoid relegation. Fulham defeated Newcastle United 1-0 in what will now be remembered as Magath’s first win as coach.

Fulham netted in the second-half through Ashkan Dejagah having not won any of their last nine games.

Magath has taken charge of four games since he became the club’s manager. The manager was pleased about his side’s victory as he spoke to reporters about the survival chances of his team.

“I told you before the game I am convinced we can manage it and stay in the league, and after this victory I am even more convinced,”

“It is a good feeling to have a win at the end of the game. I think the atmosphere was tremendous the fans supported us very well.

“If you begin a new job you know you need a win, it’s extraordinarily important that you have a win as the players are not confident and they need confidence.”

Other teams battling relegation such as West Brom, Sunderland and Crystal Palace also picked up points but Magath is solely focused on his team.

“I don’t care much about the other results because we have to do our work and get our results,” he added. “It’s not only the result today, it’s the game we played, we were the better team.

“It will give us the confidence that we can avoid relegation and stay in the league.”

Olympiakos Win Greek Super League Title

The Greek super league title was won on Saturday by Olympiakos at Karaiskakis Stadium after they defeated Panthrakikos 2-0 .

Nelson Valdez’ goal and another penalty goal from David Fuster were what Olympiakos needed against the 10-men visitors.

Olympiakos had been forced to play behind closed doors as a result of the violence witnessed when they played rivals, Panathainakos. This meant they celebrated their title triumph in an empty stadium.

This Olympiakos fourth consecutive super league title success. They have won the title 16 times in 18 seasons. The Greek giants ensured victory despite resting some key players ahead of Wednesday’s last-16 second leg against Manchester United.

Olympiakos won the first leg of the Champions league round of 16 encounter. They are hoping to compound United’s woes at Old Trafford.

Charles Novia: Death At A Job Interview

It’s quite sad to hear that young Nigerians lost their lives in the Nigerian Immigration Service Job Interview carried out today, Saturday March15. It is reported that over 10 people lost their lives in the Abuja Stadium Stampede and scores more injured.Pictures on some blogs show that the 45,000 capacity Abuja Stadium was not enough to contain the thousands of applicants.Reports also suggest that in various cities all over Nigeria today, the number of those who came out were in hundreds of thousands for the NIS interviews!

I was driving past the National Stadium, Lagos at about 11.15 am this  morning when I got caught in a traffic gridlock. As the cars crawled, I saw thousands of young men and women dressed in plain white T-Shirts and white shorts all around the stadium under the scorching sun. I wondered if a church was having a programme in the stadium and also wondered why the people in white looked young, harassed and depressed. Most were grumbling openly.

It was two hours later that I was told that they were applicants for the NIS job vacancies. I was stunned. The number of applicants who were in Lagos alone were close to 100,000! And reports say across the country, each of the applicants spent between N1000 to N2000 each to register for the application. Now, in a nation where there are no jobs for the millions of youths, the pictures and process of this NIS charade today must be seen as a tinderbox waiting to explode.

And it will explode one day.

In the first place, how can any right thinking institution ask for money from unemployed youths before their applications can be processed? It seems like a huge and insensitive scam to me. But do those in power care? This is just the glaring wickedness we face daily at the hands of our leaders and institutions of state. All they know is how to milk us dry and suck more blood off our bodies.

That is why the Federal Road Safety Corps would wake up one day and increase license fees for drivers licenses and number plates with no plausible explanation. Or the Universities would arbritrarily increase school fees for no reason! So many institutions of state senselessly killing the citizenry. Raping the poor, innocent souls without a care in the world.

In this NIS tragedy, can we at least ask ourselves some salient questions? Why are the young people not thinking of Agriculture? Is the mindset only for white collar jobs or being NIS officers with the hidden intention to serve the fatherland by collecting illegal levies at borders and airports? I could not help shaking my head today as I saw those sweating young men and women under the sun at the National Stadium. I thought to myself that more than 70% of them could turn their lives around if they found their calling in Agriculture.

We must begin to remove the idea from the young people’s minds that farming is all about hoes and cutlasses. There are stereotyped images of farming in their minds and these stupid musicians singing about blings and material stuff do not help matters. Every young person wants to be rich overnight, an ambition fuelled by the songs they listen to and the lying music videos they watch extolling materialism.

A friend of mine graduated from the University ten years ago. For five years, he could not get a job anywhere in the places where he wished to work. Then he suddenly disappeared off the radar for years. Last time I saw him, he told me he is now a successful farmer in Agbor. He went back to his village in frustration years ago and made use of his family land for farming. He told me that his annual turnover is over forty million naira with profits more than half that number. He has cars, houses and employs people in Agbor and is looking at expanding his farming business. This is a young man of 33! He looked inward and gave the unemployment market the finger!

Why can’t our young people think intelligently? They want ready-made things. The only ready-made benefits their country would offer them in the face of unemployment tragedies such as the NIS today are the ready-made tickets to their graves. More than ten young people took that ticket today. It is sad. Very sad.

“I Couldn’t Be More Different” Lady Gaga Slams Katy Perry Comparisons

Lady Gaga slammed comparisons between herself and fellow pop singer Perry during her keynote speech at South By Southwest music festival on Friday, March 14.

She said, “I don’t know what the f–k-all I have to do with Katy Perry,” the “Applause” singer said onstage (via Billboard) at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. “Our music is so completely different. I couldn’t be more different, really. I really don’t fit in pop music in a way, but I came through it and I’d like to think I changed it in some way so you can feel like you don’t have to fit into a mold.”

Gaga, 27, and Perry, 29, have long been compared for their music, but have always denied any feud between them. “I really like Katy Perry and I like her fans,” Gaga told Ryan Seacrest back in August after her single “Applause” was released on the same day as Perry’s “Roar.”

Proving, perhaps, that she is different from Perry, Gaga gave a rather controversial performance at SXSW on Thursday, March 13. While on stage, the singer allowed vomit painter Millie Brown to throw up on her body. She then performed the rest of her concert covered in puke.

“I’ve known Millie [Brown] for I think like five years now and we’ve actually collaborated before . . . she was just in town and so we thought we would collaborate again,” Gaga explained of their collaboration during her keynote speech. “It was just exciting to see people talk about performance art on the internet. We really just did it because we believe in the performance and we believe in what it meant to the song.”

Gaga, however, did have one concern over the stunt. “I asked my publicist if she quit in the middle of the show!” she confessed with a laugh.

Stampede Mars Immigration Recruitment In Port Harcourt

A stampede marred the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment in Rivers, correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report.

Some 25, 000 applicants were scheduled to participate in the NIS job recruitment interview holding at the 16, 000 capacity Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt.

NAN learnt that several NIS job applicants were seriously wounded, while some lost their certificates in the melee.

The Public Relations Officer of NIS in Rivers, Mr Abang Bisong, who confirmed the incident to NAN in Port Harcourt on Saturday, said the stampede was caused when about 20, 000 candidates forced their way into the stadium.

“During the stampede, some candidates fell and were trampled upon by others, while some became unconscious due to the incident.

“The victims have been taken to the Military Hospital for rehabilitation and treatment.

“At the moment, we have not received any information on their present condition,” Bisong said.

Bisong, a Superintendent of Immigration, said that NIS had advertised positions for university graduates, diploma holders and Senior Secondary School Certificate holders.

An eyewitness and victim, Mr Jasper Saturday, corroborated Bisong’s account but commended security agents in the manner they handled the crowd.

Saturday, who claimed to have lost his original certificates, said that gunshots released by security agents to disperse the crowd averted “a tragedy which could have occurred”.

“The immigration officers were trying to screen candidates from the stadium gate and in the process some candidates became impatient and started pushing us from the back.

“Those of us who were in the front fell to the ground because others stepped on us and as a result, some candidates lost consciousness.

“If not for the gunshots released to the air by security agents to scare the candidates pushing us from behind, there would have been several casualties,” Saturday said.

However , in Imo State, Gov. Rochas Okorocha assured the job seekers that he would ensure that they were not shortchanged in the recruitment.

Okorocha gave the assurance in Owerri on Saturday at Dan Anyiam Stadium where thousands of applicants gathered for the aptitude test for employment in NIS.

He said he would ensure that the employment quota for Imo was filled by indigenes of the state.

The governor said that not all the applicants would be successful and advised them to also apply for jobs in the “Imo Youths Must Work programme” of the state government.

NAN reports that no fewer than 10 applicants, including three expectant mothers, fainted while waiting for the commencement of the test.

Some of the applicants expressed disappointment over the manner the exercise was organised.

An applicant, Nwakuche Isigu, said he left his village in Oguta Local Government Area by 6a.m. to ensure that he arrived early at the venue.

Another applicant, Onyemobi Anyanwu , called on the Federal Government to create more jobs for the youth.

In Kebbi, 5,000 applicants assembled at Halliru Abdu Stadium, where officials had tough time controlling the applicants.

The venue witnessed a boom in economic activities as food and snacks vendors as well as sachet water sellers enjoyed good patronage.

The police, Federal Road Safety Cops and National Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel assisted in the maintenance of order at the venue.

National Hospital Confirms 7 Dead In FCT At Immigration Recruitment Centre

Authorities of National Hospital, Abuja, on Saturday confirmed seven persons among 67,000 Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) job applicants in the FCT dead.

The applicants had converged on the National Stadium, Abuja, one of the venues for the test to fill 5,000 vacancies in NIS and many were said to have arrived at the centre before 6a.m..

The service had fixed the test nationwide for the 7,000 applicants for the available jobs.

However, a stampede ensued at the FCT centre about 7a.m. when the screening of candidates was to start for the test scheduled for 4p.m.

Mr Tayo Haastrup, the spokesman for the hospital, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the seven, five women and two men, were brought in dead and that the bodies had been deposited at the mortuary.

“The hospital received some casualties from the stampede from the ongoing Immigration recruitment at the National Stadium.

“Those that died were seven in number, five women are and two men, their corpses have been deposited at the mortuary, “Haastrup said.

He said the hospital was stabilising those brought in unconscious from the stampede, while other casualties had been taken to other hospitals, including Asokoro General Hospital.

NAN recalls that in 2008, no fewer than 20 people died in various states of the federation during a similar exercise conducted by the Ministry of Interior for Nigeria Prisons Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and Customs Service.

PDP Mourns Victims Of Immigration Service Stampede, Demands Immediate Investigation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it is extremely grieved by the death of young Nigerians during a stampede at the recruitment exercise conducted by the Nigeria Immigration Service at the National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday.

The PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh on Saturday said it was “shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the untimely death of the young citizens who were at the exercise not only to secure jobs but to be allowed the opportunity to contribute towards the development of the nation.”

The party said it was “unfortunate and disheartening that the victims paid the supreme price while trying to be more useful to the nation.”

While commiserating with the families of the deceased, the ruling party prayed for the speedy recovery of the wounded and charged the Ministry of Interior and all relevant agencies of government to immediately swing into action to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the stampede.

The PDP also charged all government agencies and parastatals, as well as all its elected and appointed officials at all levels to redouble their efforts in curbing unemployment in line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda and the PDP manifesto.
