The recruitment exercise by the Nigerian Immigration Service took place at over 6 various centers nationwide with a massive turn out of applicants at the various stadium nationwide.

At the National Stadium, Surulere — venue of the Lagos recruitment exercise — the applicant started protesting at some point stopping the road users thereby leading to traffic logjam.

Yakubu Dati: Omale’s Sour Grapes, Suffering From Oduah Phobia

Captain Peter Omale must be a witch doctor who sees far more than other Nigerians. By his own admission, he sees ‘invisible hands’ which ordinary mortals can’t see and he can correctly read the mind of our President.

So gifted in this regard is Omale, (being a witchdoctor) that he can tell us who is influencing Mr President at any given time.
In his recent article on the back page of the Leadership newspaper of Saturday, March 8, 2014, Omale, in typical fashion, began with a voodoo allegation that “the tsunami that swept the heads of aviation parastatals this Tuesday can only be attributed to the invisible hands of the immediate past Minister of Aviation.”

He however contradicts himself in the next sentence when he says “whether this assumption is correct or not.” Was Omale saying that this accusation against Oduah was based on assumption?
One does not need to think hard to know that Omale is suffering from Oduah phobia! If not, why would anyone publicly accuse someone of wrong doing and it does not have to be true!
According to him “in my indirect investigative sympathy phone calls to the majority of those affected by the sack, each of them attributed their demise to the former minister, who, up until today, uses her connections in high places to invisibly run the aviation sector.”
What is indirect investigative sympathy phone calls? These gentlemen worked under Oduah when she was Aviation Minister, so if she wanted to remove any of them she possibly could have done so. Ironically, some of these men Omale now has sympathy for were also at the receiving end of his mud-slinging exercise when they were in office.
It ought to be clear to selfish people like Omale that Oduah left a well-articulated masterplan for Nigerian aviation which will be difficult to reverse .Most of these self-centred critics wish things remained the way they were before the Oduah era, so that they could continue with their acts of impunity. Perhaps, we should sound it loud and clear that the Nigerian aviation industry can never go back to those days of mindless impunity by these crooked businessmen masquerading as aviation stakeholders.
The good news is that the Oduah revolution of the aviation sector has taken firm root and things would not go back to the old days before Oduah, even with her exit! Perhaps, that is why people like Omale see imaginary Oduah hands in everything that happens in the industry today.
Omale appears to be a serial liar, who will concoct anything in order to have his way. His claim that Oduah only allowed people with political connections to bring in airplanes into the country is not only absurd but a clever distortion of the policy on this issue.
The truth is that under Oduah, the Aviation Ministry and NCAA drew up new rules that would govern the importation of aircraft into the country with a view to stemming the indiscriminate importation of unregistered and low quality aircraft into the country. This, of course, would have made the likes of Omale very unhappy for reasons that are obvious to well meaning stakeholders in the industry.
Omale says that Nigeria may be downgraded to category two from category one. If that happens, it will be due to the likes of Omale who operate aircraft without license, without insurance, without any form of technical support and without spare parts.
Omale claims to be a stakeholder in the sector, but let him point to one contribution he has made towards the development and growth of the industry.
In contrast, the Oduah achievements in the aviation industry are there for all to see. Is it in safety? Is it in manpower development and operational efficiency? Is it in infrastructural development? In so short a time, her contributions have been so fruitful that many Nigerians have been pondering over what becomes of her projects after her exit. Is it the Aerotropolis project we want to talk about, or the development of cargo facilities round the country for both perishable and non-perishable cargo?
For the first time, producers of perishable agric produce are being directly connected to international markets for greater profits. New routes have been opened to the Middle East with the signing of new bilateral air service agreements with several countries.
And the construction of several state –of the state international airport terminals across the country, aside from the unprecedented re-modelling of 22 faded airports under Oduah are just too much for fake stakeholders like Omale to fathom.
For the avoidance of doubt, Federal Government, in its wisdom, decided to effect changes in the top management of the aviation agencies recently, undoubtedly in the public interest.
This is more so because all the newly appointed Chief Executive Officers are not charlatans, as alleged by Omale, but are highly experienced and well known aviation professionals with substantial experience in the aviation industry.
Engineer Ibrahim Abdusalam, the new Managing Director, NAMA is a graduate of Electrical Engineering of both Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the University of Massachussets in USA and has been in service since 1994 holding responsible positions before his appointment.
Similarly, Engineer Saleh Dunoma, FAAN’s new Managing Director, is a 1979 graduate of Building Engineering of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and has held various top positions in FAAN since 1980, including Director of Engineering Services.
Samuel Caulcrick, the new Rector of NCAT is a professional commercial pilot with over 25 years experience. He obtained his commercial pilot licence in 1977 from NCAT, Zaria. He did further flight training in 1986 in the US.
Captain Muhtar Usman, the newly appointed Director-General designate of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, was until his recent appointment, the Commissioner/CEO of the Accident Investigation and Prevention Bureau, (AIPB).Usman,57,is a seasoned commercial aircraft pilot, flight inspector and accident investigator.
Does Omale want us to believe that these Nigerians are not qualified to hold the exalted positions to which they have been appointed?

Psychiatrist Calls For Passage Of Mental Health Bill

A psychiatrist, Dr Peter Ogunnubi, on Friday called for the speedy passage of the Mental Health Bill before the National Assembly to prevent the migration of psychiatrists.

Ogunnubi, who is the President of an NGO, Real Visionaries Initiative, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

The psychiatrist who works at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, said that psychiatric practise was being done under duress in the country.

“Patients are getting more knowledgeable about their rights; today we talk about litigations, rights of doctors, rights of patients.

“There are so many litigations in which a doctor will treat a patient supposedly, which he has found and also confirmed by another psychiatrist that he is incapable of normal reasoning.

“And this patient will now file a suit against that doctor that he is holding him against his or her will. Why? Because, there is no mental health law. So, we are having chaos and we are practising under duress.

“I think before psychiatrists begin to get out of this country, we are less than 250 to serve a population of 160 million. We are talking of an average of one psychiatrist to almost a million people.

“And, if these begin to leave, because nobody will want to practise in an atmosphere that is not conducive which he knows or she knows that his/her certificate is not secured.

“We will begin to have migration of psychiatrists, it is sad for us in psychiatry parlance.”

Ogunnubi said that a Mental Health Law would guarantee the protection of the rights and wellbeing of the vulnerable individuals, their families as well as the practitioners.

“The Mental Health Bill has been in the house for over 30 years. It has gone through first reading, second reading and it has gone to sleep.

“I believe that the ruling elite, our lawmakers should understand that this is a pertinent

document that will help the government of this country.

“We believe that Mental Health Bill, which we hope if successfully passed, will help in so many areas. It will protect the patients, it will protect the doctors, it will protect the populace,” he stated.

After-Sex Vaginal Gel Shows Promise For HIV Prevention, Study Reveals

0

U.S. researchers have developed a new vaginal gel that might help to protect women from HIV even if applied three hours after sex, a report said.

The report stated that vaginal gels containing anti-retroviral drugs were important for HIV prevention but were designed to be applied by women before sex, which could interfere with sex practice and limit their potency.

The researchers wrote in Science Journal that they believed a gel that could be applied after sex would be more practical because it would give women more control and would require less preparation before sex and less partner acceptance.

The gel, developed by researchers of the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, contains the anti-HIV drug, raltegravir.

Using a macaque model to assess efficacy, the researchers found applying the gel 30 minutes before exposure, protected two of three macaques from SHIV, a combination of HIV and a related virus.

More importantly, the researchers said, the gel was equally effective when applied after exposure.

The researchers added that five of six macaques treated with the gel three hours after exposure remained uninfected.

They, however, noted that the observations required confirmation in larger number of animals.

“This study supports evaluation of this class of drug for HIV prevention and further evaluation of post-coital modalities in women for enhanced acceptability and compliance,” the report added.

Ribadu To Nigerian Governors, You Can’t Fight Corruption If You’re Corrupt

Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, says governors in the country will not be able to fight corruption in their states if they are corrupt themselves.

Ribadu gave the charge at the one day-day retreat of the Rotimi Amaechi led Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, on Friday.

Ribadu’s, presentation was titled ‘Building Systems and Institutions that Prevent Corruption’. He said the most important thing in successful corruption prevention and fighting is having honest implementers.

“As is often said, our laws may not be faulty, but operators of the system are wont to be,” he said.

Ribadu told the governors that there was no way they could fight corruption if they were enmeshed in the same crime they sought to wage war against.

“To fight corruption, the umpire has to be clean, honest and sincere. Dishonesty cannot fight dishonesty. If you are corrupt, you cannot have successful anti-corruption campaign.

“Having a corrupt person pretending to fight corruption only creates confusion,” he said, stressing that transparency is the key to fighting corruption.

According to him, what is required for a system to fight corruption were morally upright leadership, making the system zero tolerant to corruption, having laws that promote transparency and the need to set the stage for effective sanction regime against defaulters.

“Preventing or fighting corruption requires your personal charge as political leaders and those at the pinnacle in your states.

“More than anything else, enthroning probity, transparency and honesty is through leading by example,” he told the governors.

Ribadu highlighted factors that encouraged corruption to include poor remuneration, poor living condition, among others, saying these must be addressed by the governors in their states.

He also stressed the need for appropriate sanctions and punishment to be meted out to corrupt officers to serve as deterrent to others.

The governors deliberated on thorny issues of corruption and insecurity threatening the existence of the nation. They also discussed agriculture and education.

At the event were Governors Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Abdul-Aziz Abubakar (Zamfara), among others.

Single Man Leaves Married Woman Blind For Refusing His Sexual Advances

By Cyriacus Izuekwe

A 35-year old man, Arinze Kingsley, has left a married woman, Mrs Amaka Ohanwe, partially blind when she allegedly refused his sexual advances.

Amaka was seriously injured in her right eye when she was allegedly beaten up by Kingsley at a beauty salon.

She said after undergoing several operations, the doctors at Apapa General Hospital confirmed that she cannot see with the eye again.
Following the assault, the police at Area ‘B’ Apapa arrested Kingsley and charged him with assault before Apapa Magistrate’s Court after which he was remanded in Kirikiri Prisons in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.

Both Amaka and Kingsley, who is still single, admitted that they were friends but Amaka said they were just friends not lovers.

She said she stopped relating with Kingsley when she discovered that he was desperate to have sex with her despite the fact that he knew that she was married and had two kids.

She said after several attempts by him to sleep with her failed, he became aggressive and when she noticed that, she started avoiding him.

Amaka said Kingsley eventually traced her to a salon at Pen Crescent, Apapa, Lagos where she went to have her hair done and attacked her in front of the beauty shop.

“He waited for me outside the salon. When he saw me, he started abusing me after I refused his advances. I replied him and he hit my eye and threw me on the floor. He started hitting his head on my eyes until I started bleeding,” she told the court.

Amaka said it was their neighbours who came to her rescue and took her to the hospital, while Kingsley immediately started his motorcycle and rode off after attacking her.

She alleged that after the attack, Kingsley boasted that nothing would happen to him because he has money to bail himself out of any difficult situation.

Amaka reported the case to the police but alleged that she was asked to collect N30,000 for her eye operation in order to settle the matter out of court.

Amaka said she had spent over N200,000 on the surgeries but they were not successful.

She called on the state government to come to her aid and ensure justice was done in the matter. Meanwhile, when Kingsley was contacted, he admitted attacking Amaka but said he wanted to settle the matter out of court but she refused.

When he was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs O.A Adegbite, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He was, however, remanded in prison custody pending when he will fulfill his bail conditions

The matter was adjourned till 24 March.
