Facebook Founder Calls Obama To Complain About NSA Hacking & Spying

0

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg called President Obama on Wednesday night to express frustration about the government’s spying and hacking programs.
“When our engineers work tirelessly to improve security, we imagine we’re protecting you against criminals, not our own government,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post Thursday afternoon.

It may seem disingenuous for the leader of a giant tech company that hoards your data (and sells it wholesale) to point an angry finger at government surveillance. But Zuckerberg’s complaint is specifically aimed at one thing: hacking.
His concerns are based on the latest investigative report from The Intercept, which revealed that the National Security Agency has weaponized the Internet, making it possible to inject bad software into innocent peoples’ computers en masse.

Put simply, using the QUANTUM program, the NSA can sneak into someone’s Web browser.
The report is based on documents provided by ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Zuckerberg took to Facebook to decry the tactic, saying it runs counter to the company’s attempts to protect its users. He noted that Facebook encrypts users’ communications, uses secure software and encourages people to use safer sign-in procedures.

“The U.S. government should be the champion for the Internet, not a threat,” Zuckerberg wrote. “They need to be much more transparent about what they’re doing, or otherwise people will believe the worst.

Zuckerberg said he called President Obama to express his frustration. But he said he’s not holding out hope for a quick change.

“Unfortunately, it seems like it will take a very long time for true full reform,” he concluded.

White House officials acknowledged Obama and Zuckerberg spoke, but did not divulge details about the conversation. The administration pointed to an NSA statement denying the accusations.

“NSA does not use its technical capabilities to impersonate U.S. company websites,” the agency said. “Nor does NSA target any user of global Internet services without appropriate legal authority. Reports of indiscriminate computer exploitation operations are simply false.”

This episode is the latest in a litany of sobering reports showing how government surveillance of innocent Americans and foreigners has surpassed expectations. First came reports about mass collection of phone call and emails. Then came the NSA’s attack on encryption and physical tracking via smartphone data. Then came news the British GCHQ spy agency taps into Yahoo video chats of innocent, everyday people.

SHORT STORY: The Thief Of The Night Written By Ghana’s J.Y. Frimpong

This story is based on the poem “THE THIEF OF THE NIGHT”. Click goo.gl/LRyVZa to download the poem.

TO begin with, Asare was a weird fellow; there is no doubt about it. He had only one friend who was also as weird as him; there is also no doubt about that too. The only doubt people had about him (Asare) was whether he was human or ghost.

People asked this question because he built his house at the graveside and was in the habit of visiting the cemetery at night placing roses on every tomb he saw. People used to say they saw him talking to “unseen” spirits and perhaps that was where he belonged. I used to think so till the ghost in the graves decided to return his visits.

The spirits visited him on the eve of Christmas, with the view of celebrating the festivity with him. He was the only friend they had, he had been bringing them roses and had been telling those stories about how nice ghost were. They didn’t inform him of their intended visit; no, not at all, they wanted it to be a surprise; something that will make him happy.
So as usual, after he had come to visit them and brought them roses he left. On the entrance of the graveyard he blew them a kiss and said “See you soon”. Immediately he turned his back to the road, he heard a reply “See you soon”. He turned to see if he could find the person who responded but quickly assured himself “Oh, it’s just an echo, let me get to the house.”
Surprisingly on that day, no matter how hard he tried, sleep still eluded him. It was as if they had become arch-enemies. As he was lying on his bed, he heard leaves fall from the tree he had planted in front of his door. Due to his insomnia, he decided to take a walk around his house. He wore his shirt and put on a Knickerbocker shorts but as he was about to open the door, he saw a shadow pass by his window and he instantly became afraid. He leapt on his bed and covered himself with his blanket.
“Who are you, show yourself before I kill you. I have a gun, it’s in my wardrobe!” He screamed. The reply was a ghastly laughter and a rogue response “Why would you even think of killing your friends?”

“Gyamfi, its 1 o’clock mid-night! Go home and come in the morning. What happened to your voice?”

“It’s not Gyamfi. It’s your friends from the graves”

“Stop this nonsense and go home” Before he could say more, the door had opened and there stood a monster; he was lanky and had no flesh on him, he had only three teeth and they looked as if they had divorced their brush. He wore ragged of clothes and had this ghastly smell which nearly choked Asare.
“Asare, aren’t you happy to see me? We came to celebrate the Christmas with you?” he greeted.
He began to shake and sweat. The ghost touched him and he became as cold as ice. He passed his hand on his chest again and said “You have a hairy chest. Reminds me of when I was alive. Although I am dead, I am so happy that I could die!”

“Please tell me what you want? I have a fat treasure hiding in an undisclosed land, will give it to you, please leave me”

“I have a feeling that we have offended you”

“When you say “we”, what do you mean?”

Instantly the door opened and more monsters entered and gathered round his bed. He looked at the clock in his room and it read 6:30pm. This was impossible! Its battery had run down.

He tried to recall a verse in the Bible to ward off the ghosts. Yet hard as he tried, it was as if his memory was blank. He thought “it was a dream, on the morrow, I will wake up and it will be over.” Hard as he tried to wake up to his defined reality, it seems there was no awakening.

With all the strength in him, he shouted “Get away from me!”

It worked! He looked around and there was no one but himself! His clock was now working (apparently). The time read 3:00am and he was happy. Two more hours to twilight and he couldn’t wait to narrate his story to people but then he chuckled “Apart from Gyamfi, who is obviously not interested in ghost stories, who can now narrate this story to?”

There and then, he heard a knock on his door again, this one somewhat louder than before and he began to scream. The knocks however did not stop, it became incessant and a voice greeted “It’s Gyamfi, open the door, I have something to tell you”

“Go away, you ghost, don’t deceive me anymore”

The door opened and truly, Gyamfi stood in the doorway holding a dagger. The dagger looked vaguely familiar! It was that dagger they had used to slaughter the sheep when he was celebrating his birthday!

“Gyamfi, what are you coming to do?

“I am about to kill you!”

He blinked, he was petrified and this did not however stop Gyamfi. He came closer and closer with a devilish smile on his face and he raised the dagger.

APC Condemns Upsurge In Assassination, Kidnapping In Rivers

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers State Chapter, has described as condemnable and unacceptable, the recent upsurge in assassination and kidnapping in the State.

“This upsurge started with assassination of an APC Councillor and kidnapping of three PDP chieftains. With the kidnapping of popular On-Air Personality with Wazobia FM Port Harcourt, Mr. Anthony Akatakpo, famously called Akas Baba, after his home was attacked in the early hours of Thursday, March 13, 2014, the situation appears to be getting out of hand and is becoming too much for us to condone,” APC Rivers said in a statement issued by the State Interim Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

Continuing, the statement said: “We are aware of the efforts made by the administration of Governor Chibuike Amaechi to make this ugly trend history until the present PDP leadership in the state started promoting insecurity in its bid to destabilise the state following the rejection of the party by Rivers people as demonstrated by the defection of Governor Amaechi and most other Rivers people to APC.

“We strongly condemn this upsurge in crime and wish to urge the new Commissioner of Police, CP Tunde Ogunsakin, to see this as a challenge that must be met. We suspect that this new wave of insecurity is being sponsored by the promoters of the redeployed controversial CP Joseph Mbu in order to justify their failed campaign for the elongation of his evil stay in Rivers on the argument that during his stay we were not witnessing any assassination or kidnapping. We have strong faith in the capability of CP Ogunsakin to rise to the occasion and restore state-wide security if his antecedents are anything to go by.

“Finally, we demand the immediate release of Akas Baba because this man has done much to ease tension among our people under the strangulating economic woes arising from the poor management of our economy by the incompetent PDP at the centre. This request for the immediate release of Akas Baba becomes imperative to enable him to be treated for the injury he sustained in the course of this unfortunate kidnapping. We learnt that he was beaten and shot in the leg by the kidnappers in the presence of his children and wife, despite cooperating with his attackers. He was thereafter whisked away in his Mitsubishi Endeavor SUV with Registration Number LSD 871 CM. This very violent act still leaves Akas Baba’s family in great trauma”.

24 Hour Curfew Imposed In Maiduguri

Following renewed Boko Haram attacks in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, a curfew has been imposed in the Maiduguri metropolis.

Governor Kashim Shettima declared a 24 hour curfew in Maiduguri earlier today.

The curfew was declared after a study of the “security situation,” arising from the renewed attacks by the sect.

The attacks came against a Nigerian Army facility, the Giwa Barracks, where captured Boko Haram detainees captured are being held.

2015 Elections: Orientation Agency Partners INEC To Begin Voter Education

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will soon commence massive voter education to sensitize the Nigerian electorate on the processes of the 2015 General Elections as well as their civic rights and responsibilities in the elections.
This is emerging from a synergy and strategy meeting between the two agencies held at the National Orientation Agency Headquarters in Abuja. The INEC delegation to the meeting was led by INEC Commissioner, Dr. Chris Iyimoga acting as Chairman, Information and Publicity Committee of the Commission.
At the meeting, the Director General of NOA, Mr. Mike Omeri disclosed that the Agency was designing an interface to enable it take election messages to the masses in the languages they speak, read and understand. He further hinted that NOA had perfected plans to train its staff on election information dissemination, stressing that the Agency could not afford a misinformation of the electorate or a distorted feedback on election matters. He said already, NOA staff in Ekiti and Osun were carrying out community engagement and dialogue sessions for voter sensitization ahead of the coming gubernatorial elections in those States.
Assuring Nigerians of the resolve of government to ensure free and fair elections, Omeri said Nigerians should have no doubt about the 2015 elections. President Goodluck Jonathan, he said, “has shown commitment to free and fair elections from the 2011 elections. No observer in that election reported any government interference in the processes of that election, so Nigerians should be rest assured that the 2015 General Elections will even be an improvement on the 2011 polls”.
Speaking earlier, Dr. Iyimioga said the synergy was necessary as INEC considered it proper to liaise with NOA, being a key agency of government involved in information dissemination. This synergy with NOA, he said, would ensure effective election awareness and publicity towards the 2015 elections.
The INEC Commissioner assured Nigerians that election messages will reach all those who need to be reached as no effort would be spared in curbing voter apathy and improving voter education to ensure the 2015 elections is a remarkable improvement on the 2011 elections.

Palacio Eventually Signs New Inter Deal

Inter Milan Striker,  Rodrigo Palacio has penned a new deal with the Italian giants which will keep him at San Siro until 2016.

Palacio has scored 36 goals in 60 appearances for the Nerazzurri since leaving Genoa two years ago, with a third of those goals arriving this season as fifth-placed Inter battle Napoli and Fiorentina for a Champions League place.

A statement published on Inter’s official website described Palacio as “a reference point for the team and a champion beloved by the fans” who is “tireless and generous to his team-mates but capable of great solo efforts”.

There were fears among Inter fans in recent weeks he would be tempted to cut his stay in Milan short this summer to return to his homeland amid interest from former club Boca Juniors.

PRESS RELEASE

TERRORISTS ATTEMPT TO FREE DETAINED COLLEAGUES FOILED IN MAIDUGURI

Pockets of terrorists apparently in a move to boost their depleted stock of fighters this morning attacked a military location in Maiduguri with a view to freeing their colleagues who are being held in detention.

The attack has been successfully repelled with heavy human casualty on the terrorists. Some of the victims of the terrorists’ fire in their efforts to break into the detention facility, included those they came to rescue. Many of the terrorists and their weapons have been captured. Four soldiers were wounded and are being treated. Hot pursuits by land and air operations are ongoing along with cordon and search of surrounding localities.

No institution has been reported attacked, although the effect of firing from the encounter could be noticed in surrounding facilities in Maiduguri. Details will be given later.

It is believed that this terrorists attempt is in response to the intensity of attacks on their strongholds in camps at Talala, Monguzum, Sambisa forests, Gwoza, Mandara mountains as well as the general area of Lake Chad. The camps have been destroyed and many insurgents killed.

Tunde Leye: Bigger Entity Myopia, Why Nigerian States Are Unable To Generate Revenue

It was last week that Usman Bugaje made the claims about the oil in the Niger Delta belonging to the North. From the buzz of conversation online and offline on the matter, it is clear that we the people still allow these men to get away with such statements without asking them the necessary questions that should shut them up. Elders like Bugaje have done nothing to drive development of the vast non-oil minerals in the north. No, they lazily eye the oil wealth available from the delta and scramble for their share.
But the Niger Delta leaders are not exempt from blame. In spite of the advantages that receiving 40% of all the disbursements to states from the center and their lower population should give them, most have nothing to show for it in terms of infrastructure and development. Rather, they keep playing the victim card and feeding the same sentiments in their people, playing on the very real poverty and environmental devastation in the area. What they bank on is that the people of the Niger Delta will be so wrapped up in this that they will not ask their own leaders the questions – where is all the money you are getting from the center going to? I wrote this piece titled Bigger Entity Myopia last year and I think it aptly captures my thoughts on the matter with figures from disbursement to states to buttress the points made. (Article Below)
*****************+++++*****************
There’s what I call the Bigger Entity Myopia that many Nigerians seem to suffer from. This form of myopia impairs the perception and sensitivity such that we ignore the leadership that is responsible for our immediate well being and focus on the bigger one. So we ignore our councilors and focus on the state governors. We ignore the profligacy and lackluster performance of our governors and rile the federal government as if everything rises and falls there. I did an interesting table recently juxtaposing the monies that come to states from the center, their Internally Generated Revenue and their populations. The data threw up some interesting facts. The first, which should be quite obvious is that many states are pretty much not viable if the feeding bottle from the center is disconnected. But that isn’t the crux of this piece.
The second point is a sensitive one. Population does not really influence the share of the proverbial national cake that states get. When one thinks of this with the checks and balances put in the electoral laws in perspective, one begins to wonder why we are yet to have a census that reflects obvious things since both the politics and the economics do not necessarily ascribe greater share or powers to you when your population is greater. Bayelsa is number 4 on the allotment of funds from the center but is the least populous of the 36 states, only more populous than the FCT. True, population still has impact, but it is no longer the greatest. I use population figures in this article, but adjusted Lagos to reflect the position of both the state government and many internationally reputable agencies.
The third is the crux of this piece. I feel for the ordinary people of the Niger Delta who have suffered the devastation of oil exploration without development. I once spoke to a woman who told me that all she knows is fishing and then told me now that she had to marry away her daughter to some big man so they would not starve since the oil spills had killed all their fish. The sad part was that she then clenched her fist and said “those stupid people who came to our land to take our oil, destroy our land and use it to develop only Abuja and Lagos”.
I paused at this point and asked her “which stupid people?”
She responded as if I had asked the stupidest question possible and said “the government now. All of them in Abuja.”
So I asked her “your state governor, what has he done to develop this place?”
At that point, she was almost losing her temper “Is it his job? Is he the one taking our oil? It is the Abuja people!”
At that point, I backed down (before she organized a lynching) and decided to check these figures. The figures I could find were the 2011 figures. The startling thing was that about forty percent of the monies shared from the center to the states went to the oil producing states. Yet there is little to show for it in many of these states. Even if many got 50% of 100% derivative, the monies would simply disappear into the same pockets the 13% is going to now. This is the sad reality.
When one takes the figure for the total revenue each state generates and gets from the center per annum and divides it by the population of the state, we have what is theoretically available to spend on each citizen of the state. States like Bayelsa have N115,517, Akwa Ibom N65,658, Rivers N60,534, Delta N57,314 topped the list. The FCT was 2nd with N73,868. After Delta, the next state is Abia and it has only N29,557 to spend per citizen. That is a huge drop. Lagos has only N13,395 to spend on each citizen and is 34th on this list. Kano is last on the list with only N10,318 to spend per person. The question therefore is this – what have the Niger Delta governors been doing with what is clearly an advantage, with all this money which they have been shared without the population pressures of places like Lagos and Kano? Let me say it this way – Bayelsa has ten times more money to spend per person than Lagos or Kano. But of course, the realities on ground do not reflect this. To that woman, I would say – your governor is just as much a culprit as the people in Abuja.
If more monies are allotted to the states, will it end up developing anything. We will be writing articles years after asking these same questions. The people within the oil-producing states need to wake up and ask questions closer to home. Those whose states are feeding bottle states, totally dependent on the federal government allocations will begin to ask questions as to why their states are unable to generate IGR. The figures are below. I hope we will all look at them and begin to ask questions.

OSUN 2014: Violence Is PDP’s Trademark, APC Reacts To Omisore’s Accusations

The statement by PDP Gubernatorial aspirant in the forthcoming Osun election, Iyiola Omisore claiming his life is being threatened and asking security agencies to caution APC leaders and incumbent governor, Rauf Aregbesola has sparked a reaction from the opposition party.

The Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of the APC, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi has said the PDP is notoriously known for violence and blood-sheds. He claimed hoodlums working for the PDP killed many people in the state while trying to consolidate on the mandate they stole from Aregbesola in 2007.

Oyatomi’s statement reads:

“ The PDP has been shedding blood. Violence is their trade mark. The records of their bloodletting activities are there for everyone to see.

“The purported threat to Omisore’s life; this is what they intend to do and they are rushing to the press to lay it on the doorsteps of the ruling party.”

OSUN 2014: Iyiola Omisore Cries Out Over Death Threats, Wants Security Agencies To Caution Aregbesola Over Misguided Comments

People’s Democratic Party gubernatorial aspirant in Osun state, Senator Iyiola Omisore has revealed that his life is under threat. He made this allegations yesterday through a statement by his media aide, Mr Diran Odeyemi. He claims people are threatening to kill him and he also called on the Police to protect his life.

The statement made in Osogbo lays claim to the allegation that leaders of All Progressives Congress and incumbent Governor of Osun state, Rauf Aregbesola have been talking about bloodshed incessantly. Omisore called on security agents to extend a warning to them.

“Otunba Iyiola Omisore has been receiving threat messages and this is a dangerous sign. We don’t want what happened to Funsho Williams in Lagos State when he was about to be nominated to happen to him.

“We are calling on the police and the Federal Government to ensure that Omisore is secure. Security agencies should monitor Mr. Rauf Aregbesola and caution him because he has been mentioning bloodshed since.

“The police in the state should be at alert, more men should be deployed to monitor the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise.

“We are urging our people to remain calm and only fight with their votes,” the statement read.

Omisore also called for the removal of Ambassador Rufus Akeju as the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state.

Electricitiy Supply Is Alien To 30 Million Nigerians – Minister Of Power, Prof. Nebo

The Federal Government through the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo has disclosed that about 30 million Nigerians consisting mainly of those living in rural communities are living in blackout as they have not been connected to the national grid yet.

Thw statistics was let out when the Nigerian Renewable Energy Private Equity Seminar was declared open by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power, Amb. Godknows Igali who was ably representing the Federal Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Ositadinma Nebo.

Nebo said the seminar aims at sensitizing investors, fund managers, policy makers and stakeholders on the importance of supporting the development of renewable energy in the country.

According to him, the seminar was also aimed at mobilizing stakeholders to initiate an equity fund through private sector participation to promote sustainable energy and deliver power to the millions of Nigerians without electricity.

While citing a UN Report on access to power, the minister said,

“There is still a wide gap in power supply. Sadly for us here in Nigeria, we still have about 30 million people that do not have access to power at all.

“This is the reason the Federal Government is focusing on renewable energy, particularly off-grid solar and small hydros that would not need to depend on the national grid.”

The Minister also announced that progress was being made in the development of hydro-electricity as the financing process for the 3050 megawatts Mambilla Hydro Dam was nearing completion.

“There are 264 hydro dams, which have not been fully utilized. So, in this first quarter government did a study and is fixing the turbines and other components in 12 of them to increase their generation capacity,” he added

Another Missing Money? House Of Reps Committee Divulges Information About Missing N35bn

On Thursday, Nigeria’s House Of Representatives committee on Public Accounts disclosed that N35bn collected by the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation from the Service Wide Vote for a nine-years period could not be accounted for.

The Permanent secretary, Remi Adelakun admitted only N17.6bn whereas the records of the Budget Office of the Federation showsthat the OHSF received N52bn between 2004 and 2012.

The Honourable Solomon Olamilekan-led committee insisted that Adelakun must explain how N35bn was spent. The officials of the budget office and the Permanent secretary disagreed over how much was released to the Office of the Head of Service .

The records of the budget office have shown that in 2004, the Office of the Head of Service received N2.7bn; N9.8m was received in 2005; N701.7m collected in 2006; N896.3m in 2007; N5.3bn in 2008 and another N612.9m; and N70m collected in 2009. In 2010, the figure was N17.6bn; in 2011, it was N13.6bn and N8.5bn in 2012.

Honourable Olamilekan ruled that the permanent secretary must present documents which shows how the balance of over N35bn was used within two weeks.
