How Christ Embassy’s biggest donor defrauded investors of over N171Billion

0

In November 2020, at The Loveworld Pastors and Partner’s conference of Christ Embassy Church, CEO of Capital Forex and Investment trading limited, Maxwell Odum was awarded ‘Top Partner of the year’ for the second year running.

The award is much coveted by Senior pastors and members of Christ Embassy because it celebrates individuals who had donated the most money into church projects. Such donors are referred to as ‘Loveworld Partners’.

Maxwell Odum had reportedly donated N1Billion.

Trouble however started in November last year after the company investors alleged a ‘mismanagement of the funds” by the business man. Several investors who had not been paid filed petitions and in April 2021, Detectives from the Lagos State Police Command reportedly detained Odum.

He was picked up by operatives of the Ikoyi office of the Special Fraud Unit of the command and held for about 6 hours before being released on bail based on personal recognition.

NewsWireNGR gathered that the Central Bank of Nigeria had said 125, 397 investors deposited a total of 171, 128,219,041 into accounts belonging to the company.

The Apex bank in a suit with suit Number FHC/PH/MIsC/35/2021, before the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on the 10th of February, had filed an exparte motion seeking an order of the court to stop all debit transactions from MBA accounts.

The court on the 11th of February ordered that accounts maintained in any bank in Nigeria by the company be forthwith frozen for a period of time sufficient for the Central Bank of Nigeria to conclude the ongoing investigation and inquiry into the affairs of the Company.

The accounts include 39 Naira bank accounts domiciled in Access Bank, EcoBank, FCMB, GTB, Suntrust, Stanbic IBTC, Sterling Bank, UBA, Union Bank, Unity Bank and Zenith Bank.

Others are 8 dollar accounts domiciled in FCMB, Ecobank, Stanbic IBTC, UBA and Sterling Bank.

According to the CBN, investors from Port Harcourt made up 43.45 per cent of the total investors.

Reacting to the court order, MBA informed its investors that it will be constrained to refrain from any further actions or statements that may affect or influence the ongoing investigation as the matter is now subjudice.

“It said “We have gathered that the actions of the Central Bank of Nigeria are well within the confines of their statutory obligations and was instigated by some investors against our earlier advice.

“These disruptions have interfered with our plans and incapacitated the steps we have initiated towards the realization of the repayment of capital investments.

However on Monday, investors in Port Harcourt gathered at Christ Embassy in protest, asking Christ Embassy’s Pastor Chris Oyakhilome to compel Maxwell Odum to refund their money.

An investor , David Spencer who spoke to Sahara Reporters, said he was introduced to MBA by a staff member who claimed that the investment scheme was government approved.

He said, “The staff member told me the company has approval certificate from CBN and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He also said SEC has certified the company hence I decided to invest my capital with them. As we speak, I am still in a state of shock. I have taken legal steps against the MBA, I wonder why an investment company approved by CBN and the EFCC will be like that.

“We later learnt that MBA lied to us that they also had SEC approval. I want to use this opportunity to call on the President and the National Assembly, to as a matter of urgency wade into this issue. If over 70, 000 investors lose their hard-earned money, that would further deplete the economy.”

This is not the first time Christ Embassy church has been embroiled in donation fraud scandals by members.

In 2002, Lawrence Agada was arrested for stealing over N9 million naira over a period of time from the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos, where he was employed as a cashier. Upon further investigations, it was revealed that he have most of the money as tithes and offerings to Christ Embassy church.

Just In: Buhari approves establishment of centre for small arms control

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of a National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, NCCSALW, to be domiciled in the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA.

This is contained in a statement on Monday by the ONSA’s Head of Strategic Communication, Z.M Usman.

According to the statement, the NCCSALW replaces the defunct Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons and shall serve as the institutional mechanism for policy guidance, research and monitoring of all aspects of Small Arms and Light Weapons, SALW, in Nigeria.

“This decision is part of ongoing restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture to address emerging threats and strengthen regional mechanism for the control, prevention and regulation of SALW.

“The impact of the proliferation of SALW across national borders in Africa and the Sahel region has resulted in terrorism, human trafficking, organized crime, and insurrections in West Africa and Nigeria.

“Therefore, as one of the measures in tackling this threat, the new Centre will be fulfilling the requirements of the ECOWAS Moratorium on Import, Export, and Manufacture of Light Weapons as well as the UN Plan of Action to prevent, combat, and eradicate the illicit trade in SALW.

“The NCCSALW will serve as the National Focal Point on SALW in Nigeria and lead a multi-stakeholder process involving Government Ministries, Departments, Agencies and the Civil Society in implementing all national, UN and ECOWAS Plans of Action on the control of SALW.

“The Centre will maintain international cooperation and also operate zonal offices in the Six Geopolitical Zones to ensure quick response and effective mobilization of resources.

“The pioneer National Coordinator, Rtd Major General AM Dikko has served in various capacities in and outside Nigeria. He was a Course Director at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Centre and Chief `Instructor of the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre.

“He was also a Military Adviser, United Nation Office for West Africa, Director Peacekeeping Operations Defence Headquarters, Commander Operations LAST HOLD as well as Commander, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, to mention a few.

“The pioneer Coordinator has vast experience working with the ECOWAS and the UN system and is expected to operationalize the objectives of the NCCSALW.”

Teachers in Niger State to begin indefinite strike

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Niger State branch, has declared an indefinite strike from May 4, 2021.

The union in a statement made available to journalists in Minna, stated that the declaration of the strike followed the resolution by the state Working Executive Committee of the NUT held on April 30, 2021, during which the inability of the state government to meet the demands of the organisation after it suspended a previous strike that took place last February was considered.

The statement was jointly signed by the state Chairman of the union, Ibrahim Umar; the NUT Principal Assistant Secretary-General, Labaran Garba; ANCOPS state President, Ahmed Jafaar, and OPSHON Chairperson, Fatima Abdullahi Kutigi.

Among the demands of the union are: the immediate implementation of N30,000 minimum wage for primary school teachers on grade level 7 and above; payment of October 2020 salaries to primary school teachers and refund of salary cut for April 2021 to all teachers.

According to the statement, the union also demanded the immediate refund of five months end-well scheme, outstanding members’ deductions and union dues/check off dues as well as the provision of security guards to all schools in the state.

“The attention of the union has also been drawn to the fact that 70 percent will be paid to primary school teachers as salaries for the month of April. This development is hereby rejected by the union, as it will only accept 100 percent salary payment,” the statement added.

The union noted further that teachers at all levels in the state have always been treated as second class citizens, stressing that the situation will not be allowed to continue anymore.

‘Insufficient funds not an excuse for not paying salaries’ – NLC President

0

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, has called out State Governors for using insufficient funds as an excuse not to pay worker’s salaries.

Speaking during an interview on Channels TV on Monday morning, Wabba said Governors and other political office holders earn their money illegitimately as they don’t work for it.

“The councilors to the highest office holder in the land do not earn their pay based on the ability of the government to pay.

“Government must lead for order employers of labour to actually follow. The primary purpose of every Government which our Governors needs to know borders on security and welfare of the people with the welfare of workers inclusive.

“How can they say that our security agencies who risk their lives on daily basis, fighting for the betterment of the country are tiny minorities?

“How can they say that our frontline workers, the doctors, nurses and all health officials who made battling the coronavirus pandemic their priority, are tiny minorities? He queried.

“This is an inhumane act and shows you just how this government thinks.

“How many politicians do we have and how much are they consuming? This politicians earn more than they ought to when they are practically doing nothing.

“If we are to analyze this in all sincerity, what the workers are earning even though they aren’t paid well, is legitimate and what this politicians consume is totally illegitimate,” he said.

Speaking on the payment of minimum wage, the labour leader threatened a shutdown in states where governors are yet to implement the policy.

He added, “Today, more than one-third of the states are not paying. Some actually implemented for Levels 1-6. It is only about lack of resources, it is about whether they are committed to workers’ welfare.

“If not, how can a state like Rivers be talking about workers’ welfare up till now. This is the real issue. Those governors that are good, are not in the same category.” He stated.

Breaking: Terrorists threaten to kill 17 students abducted from Greenfield University after families paid N55 million

Terrorists have threatened to kill the remaining 17 students abducted from Greenfield University, Kaduna State – Twenty-two students and a member of staff were abducted from the school campus along the Kaduna-Abuja highway on April 20 and within a week, five of them were killed.

In an interview with the Hausa Service of Voice of America (VOA) Monday, a leader of the bandit group who identified himself as Sani Idris Jalingo, said if the Kaduna State Government or their families fail to pay a ransom of N100 million as well as provide them with 10 brand Honda motorcycles by Tuesday, the remaining students will be killed.

Jalingo said there were 17 students in his custody, including 15 females and two male students among them a grandchild of the late 18th emir of Zazzau, Shehu Idris, whom he identified as Hamza.

The bandit revealed that the families of the students have already raised and paid N55 million to them but said they had used the money in feeding the students.

He vowed that it was his final warning and should government or the students’ families fail to meet his demands, all the students will be killed.

“You are speaking with the abductors of Greenfield students. We heard the utterances of the Kaduna State Governor that he will not pay ransom to bandits to purchase additional arms.

Asked if he sees himself as a terrorist, Jalingo laughed and said: “I’m not but a food seeker.”

“If they fail to bring N100 million and 10 brand new Honda motorcycles known as Boko Haram by Tuesday, I can assure you they will use trucks to evacuate the bodies of the remaining students.”

He warned security agencies not to waste their time planting trackers on the motorcycles, saying his members do not go to cities and therefore arresting them will be difficult.

“We will not give them any money and they will not make any profit from Kaduna,” governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai told newsmen last month – 5 out of the abducted students have so far been killed.

Schools targeted in Nigeria are usually in remote areas where students stay in dormitories with only watchmen for security, making them easier targets.

Since December 2020, around 730 students have been abducted, disrupting the studies of more than five million children, UN agency UNICEF said.

Insecurity: ECOWAS Commission issues security alert to staff in Nigeria

0

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has alerted its staff in Nigeria, to the security situation across the country.

The commission said intelligence reports had warned of plans by undesirable elements to infiltrate various parts of the country, particularly State capitals, including the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, with the view to perpetrate crimes such as abductions and kidnappings for ransom, or as means of getting recruits for terrorist activities.

An ECOWAS internal memo signed by the commissioner for General Administration and Conference, Vafolay Tulay, and obtained exclusively by Leadership Newspaper, warned staffers of the commission to be extra careful as they go about their daily activities in the country.

Tulay urged them to maintain environmental awareness on their route to, and from work and watch out for anything abnormal around their surroundings and report same immediately.

“Avoid public drinking places and restaurants, especially after working hours.

“Limit your travels in-country as much as possible, whether by road or by air and keep to the main roads. Avoid using deserted/lonely routes and dark alleys.

“Avoid routes where rallies or any form of mass gatherings are taking place. Be extra careful when using a rented vehicle and van.

“Take appropriate security measures when approaching a checkpoint. Be
prepared to take anti-ambush/counter surveillance measures always; and be vigilant at places of worship, markets, motor parks, filling stations and
shopping malls,” he said.

He also urged staff to avoid circulating unverified security-related materials on social media platforms in order to raise unnecessary alarm

‘We were justified in not supporting Buhari’ – Pa Fasoranti

0

The pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere on Sunday described the recent crisis of confidence among ethnic groups in the country as justifying its opposition to the election of President Muhammadu Buhari in his first and second terms.

The Leader of the group, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, said insecurity, corruption, and nepotism ravaging the Buhari administration validated its reservations about his suitability for the presidency in both the 2015 and 2019 elections.

Fasoranti spoke after the 70th-anniversary thanksgiving service of the Ondo State chapter of Afenifere at Saint David’s Cathedral, Akure.

According to him, corruption and nepotism are the hallmarks of the Buhari administration since he assumed office six years ago.

Fasoranti said: “We were justified in not supporting President Muhammadu Buhari. He has not been doing well; that is why we did not support him. There is insecurity in the land. There is corruption everywhere.

“All those who committed one crime or the other, he left them in office to continue their nefarious activities. Those who he is supposed to sack, he left them in office. Thank God, we did not support him in his elections.

“My daughter was killed in Ore on her way to Lagos for no reason; up till now, they have not concluded the trial. I know justice will be done.”

Speaking on the 70th anniversary of the group, Fasoranti said it had not been easy for the group, especially during the military regime when members were sent to prison or in exile for championing democracy.

Yushau A. Shuaib: The Presidency, Pantami and Mbaka

0

By Yushau A. Shuaib

In public relations practice, decision-making processes on an issue and crisis management are always the toughest before any act of communication can be effectively executed.

Unlike journalism that feasts on bad news, which is what sells, the tradition of public relations or PR is to engage in ‘damage control’ through effective crisis communication strategies.

The key to successfully navigating a crisis is through preparation and teamwork, as the communicator needs a fast and carefully crafted response to minimise damage and prevent reputational erosion.

I was not only alarmed but I have been deeply concerned about some recent statements by the Presidency, particularly through its spokespersons, Mr. Femi Adesina and Mallam Garba Shehu, who have both incidentally served as Presidents of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) in the recent past.

Some of their reactive statements to issues could essentially be described as journalistic, for the predilection towards making news headlines, and these have been quite disturbingly below the standards of PR, which tend towards demonstrating empathy, employing diplomacy and forestalling the attrition of relationships, when responding to issues of deep concern.

The recent statements by the Presidency over what they considered as the unsavoury comments of Father Ejike Mbaka, alongside the reaction to allegations of the past extreme views of Dr. Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, are teachable instances of how not to engage in public communication. If anything, they can both be said to have been hasty in their conception and execution, and ultimately needless.

Dr. Pantami, an Islamic cleric as well as an ICT scholar, was alleged to have proffered extremist views in the past while describing some religious extremists as “fellow Muslims,” and praising the leadership of Al Qaeda in a video. Another report claimed that Dr. Pantami had chaired a meeting in a North-Eastern state in Nigeria, which had sat to plan an attack on a Christian governor in the North-West of the country.

While Pantami has come out to blame immaturity, ignorance, and a lack of exposure to global politics for some of the opinions he expressed over a decade ago, he has equally expressed regrets for those once-held views and recanted on them, while denying some other untoward allegations made about him. In seeming solidarity to his plight, the Kaduna Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), among other groups, have faulted some of the allegations levelled against the Minister.

While some commentators called for his resignation, others have tempered this by pointing out that Dr. Pantami has rather being at the receiving end of intolerance for condemning the evil ideology of Boko Haram leaders, including the founder of the group, Mohammed Yusuf, in a debate. His criticisms of terrorism had made the commander of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, to subsequently threaten Dr. Pantami with death in a series of audio and video recordings that are available on the Internet.

The otherwise swift response of the Presidency to the allegations made against the Minister can be faulted as being fairly hasty and unduly defensive. While one may be uncomfortable with some of Pantami’s past remarks, and his earlier advice that clerics should shun public office, it is an undeniable fact that he remains one of the most focused, result-oriented and charismatic Ministers in the current dispensation. He is a round peg in a round hole, in terms of professional competence in the sector he oversees.

The points in the presidential statement released in Pantami’s defence could have been highlighted by third parties and beneficiaries of some of the projects he has executed in office. It is without controversy that within the past two years, Pantami as the Minister in charge of ICT in the country, has ensured the implementation of digital projects nationwide, including the creation of ICT Innovation Hubs, the enabling of the acquisition of digital skills for entrepreneurs and innovators, alongside the setting up of Community IT Training Centres, Tertiary Institution Knowledge Centres (TIKC), and School Knowledge Centres (SKC). Also, the commissioning of more Emergency Communication Centres (ECC) across Nigeria, the downward review on Right of Way Charges for improving broadband penetration in states; the mandatory registration of SIM Cards to ensure these are not used for criminal activities, etc.

Apart from saving the Federal Government over N22 billion through the clearance of information technology (IT) projects, as of April, over 51 million Nigerians had been registered for the National Identification Number (NIN) , with the majority having updated their SIM registration records. Therefore, it was not surprising that the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that the contribution of the ICT sector to the Nigerian economy grew by 14.70 per cent in the last quarter of 2020. It further indicates that it is the fastest-growing non-oil sector, with double-digit growth within the period under review.

In a similar vein to its problematic release pertaining to Dr. Pantami, the Presidency’s reaction to Father Ejike Mbaka’s call for the president to resign over the deteriorating insecurity situation in the country was needless, unwarranted and unjustifiable.

Therein the Presidency made a strong accusation that Mbaka’s latest uncomplimentary public commentary was due to his anger at President Muhammadu Buhari for not awarding him contracts as a reward for his previous campaigns and support for the president in the elections of 2015 and 2019.

In January 2015, the outspoken Igbo Catholic priest had urged Nigerians to vote out President Goodluck Jonathan for failing to stem the tide of insecurity and corruption in the country.

At a greater risk to his life and parishioners, the Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry (AMEN) had endorsed and campaigned vigorously for Muhammadu Buhari, a Northern Fulani Muslim from the pulpit, saying that was what would bring the needed change to Nigeria.

The religious leader then said, “I love President Goodluck Jonathan and I used to be his ardent fan, but I want good for my people and that’s why I want Nigerians to vote out Goodluck Jonathan and vote General Muhammad Buhari. I don’t care if Buhari is a Muslim and from the North; all I care about is that Buhari can save Nigeria.”

Shortly after Buhari’s victory in the election, and on becoming the Nigerian president, he had commended Father Mbaka for his patriotism in the run-up to the general elections, saying that the renowned cleric’s courage had earned him a spot in the sands of time.

In a statement to congratulate Mbaka on the occasion of his 20th priestly ordination, the president said history would be kind to Father Mbaka for daring to speak truth to power, even at great personal risk. Buhari mentioned that Father Mbaka had chosen the path of honesty, despite realising that this could attract hostility from those he described as, “leaders detached from reality.”

The president further stated that “the priest’s courageous actions, while the Peoples Democratic Party was still in power, was clear evidence that religious leaders are the custodians of truth and morals in society.”

In addition, the president noted that Fr. Mbaka’s decision to identify with the masses and uphold the struggle for improved governance in the country was, no doubt, enviable. In that statement signed and released on behalf of Mr. Buhari by Garba Shehu, the President was extremely impressed by the priest’s sincere comments and patriotic disposition over the state of the nation at the time.

The statement concluded by praying to God to grant Father Mbaka greater wisdom, good health and long life, as well as the continued resolve to serve humanity.

I strongly believe that those who stood by us when it really mattered, especially respectable public figures, do not deserve a demeaning and disrespectful response, no matter the situation.

A professional and effective communicator should always realise that even when there are disagreements and contestations of opinion, particularly on behalf of a public personage like a president, the communicative endeavour should be one that sets out on persuading from opposition to a more agreeable point of view, in the most civil language, and without seeking to inflame a situation further. PR ought to build up mutually intelligible relationships, even when this is strained while avoiding the seedy route of the public fight, in the manner of motor park touts – the bolekaje and roforofo mode of confrontation – in the name of political communication.

We should always acknowledge and bear in mind all the well-meant gestures of those who might have been admirers in the past and also learn to develop a greater capacity to tolerate criticism, without muddying up issues by dredging up other sordid narratives.

In all these, while I have noticed that the media is generally more inclined to celebrate conflict and crisis, they also deliberately – and rather, unfortunately, censor – other crucial sides of stories that ought to temper the public drift towards hysteria. On one level, if the Presidency had released another slew of commendations of Father Mbaka, very likely this wouldn’t have received the same attention the attack has received, which offers an eternal insight into the psychology of the media.

On the other level, while the situation that Dr. Pantami has found himself in is quite saddening, yet there is the flip side in which there are dozens of videos and audios of his attacks against religious extremism and terrorism in the past decade that his newly hatched critics have wilfully refused to acknowledge. As earlier mentioned, these had attracted several death threats from Boko Haram, which though were widely reported in the media in the past, have barely been referred to in the present assault on him.

While public relations is different from journalism, they equally have much in common, which should be affirmed, rather than being negated. In this regard, the professional communicator and journalist should strive towards emphasising more of what unites us, rather than focusing on our divisions.

‘Cutting down trees in your compound to attract N100,000 fine’ says FCTA

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) said it is an offence for residents to cut down trees planted in private compounds without permission from the government.

The Director, Department of Parks and Recreation of the FCT, Riskatu Abdulazeez, issued the warning over the weekend.

She said anyone caught cutting down grown-up trees both in private compound and in public places would be subjected to a fine of N100,000 per tree, depending on the age and girth of the tree.

Abdulazeez said the decision was to mitigate the effects of climate change on the city and prevent reckless actions that can further endanger lives.

Cutting down of trees is now prohibited in the city; we have a penalty for such action. The policy stipulates that if you plant a tree in your compound, once it is grown, it is no more your tree, it has become a public property. We don’t plant trees for environmental protection alone, but for beautification and aesthetics appeal,” Abdulazeez said.

She also declared that even after any tree is cut down with the permission of the department, it is also mandatory that two trees are planted as replacement for each tree removed.

According to the director, estate developers who remove trees to pave ways for their projects are also compelled by laws to pay and replant the trees.

She noted that trees in general have enormous benefits and importance for humans, as the oxygen is from trees, while in return, trees use the carbon dioxide emitted by human beings to survive.

“Apart from the life the trees give us, it also douses noise, reduces glare and mitigates the effects of climate change. We are all feeling the effects of climate change, which is attributed to the rate at which we cut down trees, leading to deforestation,” she said.

Employers not paying N30k minimum wage are breaking the law – Labour Minister

0

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, says any employer paying its employee below N30,000 was breaking the law.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he said “If you read the Act well, you will see the applicability of the Act. The applicability is that all parts of the Federation (Section II); Section III also says N30,000 shall be paid, the operating word is shall.

“It does not give room for picking and choosing, it is a must. The state governors that are not paying are breaching the law of the land,” the minister said.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had signed the Minimum Wage Repeal and Re-Enactment Act, 2019 into law in April 2019.

The Act makes it compulsory for all employers of labour in the country to pay a minimum of N30,000 to their workers and gives workers compelled to accept salary less than the amount the right to sue their employer to recover the balance.

Two years after the President assented to the Act, some states have begun to pay civil servants the new minimum wage while others still struggle to do so as a result of inadequate funds.

The minister faulted governors negotiating with the labour unions in their states over the payment of the minimum wage to workers.

“This is a national law that states what you will pay to the lowest-paid employee (worker) in your establishment; state governments are employers… they are caught in the web of this law until repealed.

“Any state government or employer that negotiates minimum wage like some of them are doing with their unions, they are running afoul of the law,” the minister stated.

“I can take any employer to court. If governors have immunity, I can start from the secretary to the government, to the head of service, and go down to the State Executive Council; take them all to court and I do not need any permission.” the minister declared.
