Top 10 smallest countries in the world

Just as there are countries with massive land masses and political prowess, some can be considered small based on their land size and political influence.

The largest countries by surface area are Russia, Canada and the United States. They occupied about a quatre of the earth’s total landmass.

But how small are the smallest countries? You will be amazed they are indeed small compared to Nigeria’s total surface area.

Nigeria, a West African country, has a total area of 923,770 km² (356,669 mi²) and a total coastline of 853 km (530.0 mi). This land area is approximately 133% of Texas, a state in America.

However, it is just about half the size of Alaska in area. Alaska is the largest state in the United States and has an area of 1,717,856 square kilometres/663,268 square miles.

Vatican City – 0.49 kilometre square

Vatican City, is a city-state. It is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and is surrounded by Rome, Italy.

As of 2022, it has a total population of 512 based on projections of the United Nations data. 

Its total land size is about 0.49-kilometre square area.

Monaco – 2.02 kilometre square

Monaco is a sovereign city-state, with five quarters and ten wards, located on the French Riviera in Western Europe. It is bordered by France’s Alpes-Maritimes department on three sides, with one side bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

As of 2022, it has a total population of 39,918.

Its total land size is about 2.02 kilometre square area.

Nauru – 21 kilometre square

Nauru is a tiny island country in Micronesia, northeast of Australia. It features a coral reef and white-sand beaches fringed with palms, including Anibare Bay on the east coast.

Tuvalu – 26 kilometre square

San Marino – 61 kilometre square

Liechtenstein – 160 kilometre square

Liechtenstein is a German-speaking, 25km-long principality between Austria and Switzerland. It’s known for its medieval castles, alpine landscapes and villages linked by a network of trails. The capital, Vaduz, a cultural and financial center, is home to Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, with galleries of modern and contemporary art.

The Marshall Islands are a sprawling chain of volcanic islands and coral atolls in the central Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and the Philippines.

Its total land size by kilometre square area is 181.

Saint Kitts and Nevis – 261 kilometre square

Saint Kitts and Nevis is a dual-island nation situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It’s known for cloud-shrouded mountains and beaches.

As of 2022, based on United Nations estimates, its total population is approximately 54,098.

Its total land size is about 261 kilometre square.

Maldives – 300 square kilometre

Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives, is an archipelagic state in South Asia, in the Indian Ocean. It lies southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 750 kilometres from the Asian continent’s mainland.

Its total land size is about 300 square kilometre.

Malta – 316 kilometre square

Malta, officially the Republic of Malta, is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of an archipelago, between Sicily and North Africa, and is often considered a part of Southern Europe.

The population of Malta as of 2022 is estimated to be about 444,369.

Its total land size is approximately 316 square kilometres.
