African countries with stable electricity — No Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa [Full List]

Electricity plays a major role in the economy of any nation. It is a key factor of production for companies and if unavailable, may significantly impact output.

Businessowners and households in African countries with no stable electricity usually resort to alternative power supply such as gasoline generator which are usually more expensive, hence driving high the cost of production.

Likewise, as most African countries do not manufacture generators, the importation of the product will also have significant effect on the countries overall economy.

While it is not all African countries that have stable electricity, some experience it.

Below is a list of African countries with stable power supply:

1. Cape Verde

As of 2016, the 443 GWh generated in Cape Verde was 81 per cent from thermal power plants that burn imported fossil fuels, 17% from wind power and 1.4% from solar power.

However, Cape Verde is also embracing renewable energy sources. The country has set an ambitious goal of getting 50% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2030 and 100% by 2050.

The population of Cape Verde as of 2024 is estimated at 602,000. People in Cape Verde enjoy stable power supply.

2. Cote d’Ivoire

Cote d’Ivore generates its energy from hydropower, oil, natural gas and biomass. However, 70 percent is generated from biomass.

Ivory Coast’s electricity capacity stood at 2,548 Megawatts (MW) with 879 MW for hydroelectric plants and 1,669 MW for thermal power stations.

The population of Cote d’Ivore also known as Ivory Coast is estimated at 29.4 million as of 2024. People in Cote d’Ivore enjoy stable electricity.

Most of the energy gerenated in the country, about 70 percent is consumed by residentials.

3. Algeria

Algeria generates 66,891,220 MWh of electricity as of 2016 which is approximately 120 per cent of its annual consumption needs.

The population of Algeria as of 2024 is estimated at 46 million. Its electricity is generated from fossil fuels (99 percent) and 1 percent from renewable.

Algeria residents currently enjoys stable power supply.
