13 African countries where it snows

Snow is the solid form of water that crystallizes in the atmosphere. It is most common in Western countries while it rarely occurs in African countries.

This is why it is no surprise that many Africans upon arrival in Western countries like Canada and, the United States, among others usually enjoy taking pictures and videos of their first snow experience in their new home.

For instance, Nigeria does not experience snowfall. The coldest place in Nigeria is a town named Gembu in Taraba State. Its low temperature occurs because it is located on the Mambila Plateau, and the temperature rarely falls below 49°F or above 78°F.

Meanwhile, for snow to fall, moisture must be present in the atmosphere. Snowstorms also rely heavily on temperature, but not necessarily the temperature we feel on the ground.

Snow forms when the atmospheric temperature is at or below freezing (0°C or 32°F).

Below are African countries where it snows:

1. South Africa

Although it is rare, snow does fall in South Africa. For instance, a snowfall was recorded in Johannesburg in 2012 and another in July 2023.

2. Morocco

Morocco usually receives its first coating of snow in December or January, with March being the last month when the country experiences any sort of snow.

However, climatic changes in recent years have pushed the first Moroccan snowfalls forward to the autumn months of October and November.

3. Algeria

On 24 January 2023, heavy snowfall fell in northwest Algeria, on the peaks of the Bèchar Province, on the edge of the Sahara Desert.

4. Lesotho

One of the best places to see the snow in Lesotho is Highmoor Nature Reserve, situated in the central region of the MalotiDrakensberg Park.

5. Egypt

The Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria witnessed its first snowfall in almost a decade on December 20, 2021.
