Elnathan John: Short Men Cause All The Trouble In The World

elrufai

I will say again, as a presidential hopeful come 2015, I have nothing against small people. However, great writers before me have articulated the problem with short men. Ian Fleming, the writer of the James Bond novels, for example said of short men:

“They grew up from childhood with an inferiority complex. All their lives they would strive to be big – bigger than the others who had teased them as a child. Napoleon had been short, and Hitler. It was the short men that caused all the trouble in the world.”

Nasir El-rufai is on my mind. He was in the news again, this time taking a swipe at Asari Dokubo. He said: “Asari Dokubu is a thug. I do not compare myself with thugs.” I mean look at the man Nasir is challenging to a fight. At 6ft I would not push my fingers into Asari’s nose. But no, not Nasir. He could not even qualify the word ‘thug’ with something capable of cushioning the effect of his barb. I would’ve said something like, “Asari, a thug whose beard I envy greatly, differs greatly from my good self”. Sometimes I try to understand Nasir’s indefatigability in throwing sand in Jonathan’s garri and I just can’t. I think that at 4ft something, when you go through life having a conversation with people’s nipples, that has to affect you adversely.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has again insisted that the NNPC has stolen 20billion from Nigerians. The NNPC on its part has replied saying that these are ‘wild allegations’. Maybe Sanusi is right and our money is being stolen. But again maybe Sanusi just needs to attend more pool parties. Here is why. A pool party is very egalitarian. In the water, especially the deep end, you cannot tell who is tall and who is not. Thus the burden and frustration that comes from being Sanusi’s height is greatly reduced.

The SSS claims to have also arrested Asari this week. This came on the heels of accusations that before Nasir El-rufai was ‘invited’ and detained, he hadn’t said one tenth of what Asari had been saying for many months. Marilyn Ogar should tell us if Asari’s invitation was the same as Nasir’s. Or if it is just for show. Because for all I care Nasir could have been grilled in a hot room for hours while Asari might have been chilling with Marilyn having margaritas talking about why it is so hard to find fresh periwinkles in Abuja. Ok, so maybe Asari doesn’t drink margaritas but I just want to know.

So in a letter to the Goodluck Jonathan, Catholic archbishop Ignatius Kaigama said that the Same Sex Prohibition Act is a “clear indication of the ability of our great country to stand shoulders high in the protection of our Nigerian and African most valued cultures of the institution of marriage”. I have no opinions in this matter only to ask the good archbishop a few questions. Which Nigerian or African values of marriage does he mean? Is it polygamy which upholds a man’s right to multiple (sexual) partners as practiced throughout Africa? Or polyandrous marriages practiced by the Lele people of Congo where a woman could have as many as six (or more) husbands to take care of her and all of whom could have marital relations with her? Or the marriage between older men and prepubescent girls as practiced in many parts of Nigeria and Africa? Or levirate marriage in which the brother of a deceased man is obliged to marry his brother’s widow, and the widow is obliged to marry her deceased husband’s brother as practiced in parts of South Africa, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, South Sudan and Zimbabwe? Or the custom of marriage between two women, one of whom has no child or is seeking a male heir, (whose biological father will likely be a lover of the younger woman) which has been practiced among the Kamba of Kenya, the Basuto of South Africa, the Igbos, Opobos, Ijaws, Igalas, Yagbas and Akokas of Nigeria (to mention just a few)? Or the ghost marriage where when a single man dies, the younger brother of such a man is supposed to marry and have children in the name of the deceased, the wife being married to the deceased socially and the children belonging to the deceased man as practiced in Sudan and among the Zulu and Lozi of Southern Africa? This confuses me. But I know the man of God knows what he is talking about. The spirit has a way of revealing things to these men.

Just this week in a debate with a British consultant and writer who has spent 10 years in Nigeria and is uncircumcised, my circumcision was challenged as being ‘abuse’. So basically this man said that the removal of foreskin from my male organ, as supervised by my parents was a form of torture and abuse perpetrated against my good self. Let me just say that I object vehemently to this and reiterate how proud I am of this good member of mine. And perhaps to add that if I had grown up uncircumcised, I would have taken myself to a hospital. Because I care about how my penis looks. If you have seen a flaccid uncircumcised penis, you will understand.

Ps. I have given it thought and I believe that while male circumcision has its medical benefits, male babies should not be circumcised. (As I think the ears of young girls should not be pierced without their consent). Adult males should have the choice to remove or retain their foreskin.

Makeup Tutorial: How To Achieve The Ombre Lips.

By Hadiza Saidu

The  French word Ombre simply means fading from dark to light or vice versa. The ombre trend was first seen in hair and nail colours (two tones) now we have everyone in two toned lipsticks from the runway to the streets. This fun and vibrant trend is a look anyone can achieve. Its pretty simple as long as you understand the technique behind it. It gives the lips a plumper look and you can wear this at daytime or night time. To pull off the ombre lips, the most important thing you need are two different  lipstick of the same family(light and dark) preferably matte lipstick.  I decided to give it a try myself and here’s how I went about it:

What you need for this Ombre lips:

1. Two Shades of Lipstick (Red and Deep wine) I used a very deep purple for my second lipstick

2. Lip colour liner (a shade darker than the lipstick colour you’ll use for the pout area)

3. Lip brush (to apply and blend colour)

4. Lip moisturizer (to prepare and soften  the lips)

5. Concealer

* Buff:  The first step is to buff the lips to avoid a flawed finishing. You can achieve this in the shower by using a lip scrub or the   good old tooth brush to gently brush away any dry skin on the lips.

* Moisturise: Apply a good lip moisturizer to your lips. I use shea butter because it makes the lips soft and is not greasy.

* Concealer: Apply a concealer that matches your complexion all over your lips, this is to achieve an even toned colour on your lips.

* Line : Use the lip colour liner to line the inner and outer rim of your lips to prevent lipstick bleeding. I used Zaron brick layers lip liner pencil in the picture.

*Blend: Using your lip brush blend your lined lip by stroking inwards from the outer rim of your lips.

* Paint: Fill in your lips (full coverage) with the lipstick you want for the main lips. Apply with a lip brush for flawless finish. I used Mac Ruby Woo.  Apply the dark lipstick to the corners of your lips. To achieve the dark corner effect on my lips I applied Avon Vamp Ultracolour  Lipstick.

*Blend and Blot: Blend the dark corner inward from the corner of your lips to achieve a 3D effect where the dark part seamlessly fades into the bright part. Blot your lips after that.

*Paint Again: Re-apply the bright coloured lipstick so it pops against the dark part and you’re good to go.

This is what it looked like after i was done.

For the second Ombre lips, here’s what you need:

1. A lipstick (I used a light pink shade from a lip palette)

2. Lip colour liner (a deeper shade of your lip stick because it will also serve as a second lip colour). I used Zaron fussy fuschia lip liner pencil.

3. Lip brush (to apply and blend colour)

4. Lip moisturizer (to prepare and soften  the lips)

5. Concealer

* Paint: Fill in your lips (starting from where the lined area ends) with the lipstick you want for the main lips. Use a lip brush for a smooth and even coverage

*Blend and Blot: Blend the thick lined area from the rim of your lips inwards and  towards the centre of your lips. The whole idea is to make the outer area pop against the light shade lipstick in the middle. Blot your lips after that.

*Paint Again: Re-apply lipstick and fill in any that needs filling.

Funny enough we’ve all been going around with ombre lips for years now I guess what sets this season apart from the rest is the outrageous and adventurous colour combinations we see now that we wouldn’t have dared to walk the streets in many years ago. Still, some ombre lips are best kept on the runway and never to be seen on the streets. So what do you think of my attempt at the ombre lips? Be nice okay.

Why Regular Physical Exercise Is Crucial For Women Facing Menopause

NAN

Preservatives are effective, but there is one simpler way to keep your homemade beauty products viable and store for a longer duration: refrigeration. When you’re using fresh vegetables, fruits or any other perishable products, it’s important to keep the mixture refrigerated. Once again, it’s impossible to create a yogurt-and-fresh-apple cleanser that will remain fresh for weeks. Toss out the product if the mixture loses its texture or starts to smell bad.

If used correctly, homemade beauty products are safe, inexpensive alternatives to their store-bought counterparts. Remember to use the freshest ingredients possible, refrigerate everything and know when to toss out a shampoo, conditioner, lotion or cleanser.

Regular physical activity is crucial for women facing menopause. Consider what physical activity can do for you and how to apply fitness tips for menopause to your daily routine. Menopause is an important transition in a woman’s life. Use it as a reminder to take good care of yourself. Start by considering these fitness tips for menopause.

Why bother with fitness during menopause?

Whether you’ve exercised faithfully for years or you haven’t been active, physical activity during and after menopause offers many benefits. For example, regular physical activity can:

• Prevent weight gain. Women tend to lose muscle mass and gain abdominal fat around menopause. Even slight increases in physical activity can help prevent weight gain.

• Reduce the risk of breast cancer. Physical activity during and after menopause can help you lose excess weight or maintain a healthy weight, which might offer protection from breast cancer.

• Strengthen your bones. Physical activity can slow bone loss after menopause, which lowers the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.

• Reduce the risk of other diseases. Menopause weight gain can have serious implications for your health. Excess weight increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Regular physical activity can counter these risks.

• Boost your mood. Physical activity can improve your psychological health at any stage of life.

How does physical activity affect menopause signs and symptoms?

Physical activity isn’t a proven way to reduce menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and sleep disturbances. For some women, however, regular physical activity during and after menopause seems to relieve stress and improve quality of life.

For most healthy women, both aerobic activity and strength training are recommended.

• At least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week — preferably spread throughout the week

• Strength training exercises at least twice a week

For motivation, set realistic, achievable goals. Rather than vowing to exercise more, for example, commit to a daily 30-minute walk after dinner. Frequently update your goals. Teaming up with someone such as a partner, friend or neighbour can make a difference, too.

Remember, you don’t have to go to the gym to exercise. Many activities, such as dancing, gardening and other yard work, also can improve your health. Whatever physical activities you choose, take time to warm up and cool down safely.

Ekiti Bricklayer Abandons Wife With Triplets

NAN

A bricklayer, Mr Adewale Omole has abandoned his wife in a `spiritual home’ after he heard that she was expecting triplets in Ado Ekiti.

Narrating her story, Mrs Abosede Omole, who already had two children, told newsmen that her husband abandoned her and the babies.

She said that her husband started behaving strange after she went for a scan in Lagos where she was told that she was expecting triplets.

Abosede, who gave birth on Friday at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), said “my husband abandoned me even before I gave birth and he has refused to perform his responsibility as father.

“He left me without food. That is why I had to relocate to this spiritual home where I have received spiritual succour and financial assistance.

“Since the sudden disappearance of my husband, life has not been the same again, as I, the two children and the newly born triplets are finding it difficult to survive.

“ I am begging him to come back for the sake of these innocent babies,” she pleaded.

Abosede appealed to Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti and well meaning Nigerians to come to her aid.

Confirming the story, the Matron in-charge of the maternity at EKSUTH, Mrs Adenike Oluyide, called on well wishers to assist Abosede, as the triplets are currently at the Special Baby Care Unit of the hospital.

A member of Sabbath Mission Church, Omiolori, Okesa, Ado-Ekiti, who came to the hospital to see the woman and her children, confirmed that Abosede came to the church and was taken to the hospital.

The church member, who pleaded anonymity, said the leadership of the congregation felt she could benefit from the free medical programme of Ekiti State Government for women and children.

President Goodluck Jonathan has said that PDP will work to lead Nigeria to greatness.

Jonathan spoke in Sokoto on Saturday at a grand reception organised for a former governor of the state, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, who defected to PDP with his supporters from APC.

“The PDP is the only party that is stable and it will continue to uphold the tenets of democracy.

“The PDP respects the rule of law at all levels and we respect the constitution,” he said.

Jonathan said PDP was the number one party in Nigeria and would continue to be so.

He further said that the Federal Government under the party would continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

Jonathan commended the people of the state for their sustained support for PDP and urged them not to relent.

He commiserated with the people and government of the state over the recent fire disaster at Kara Market in Sokoto.

Also, Vice-President Namadi Sambo and Senate President David Mark expressed happiness with the defection of Bafarawa to the party.

“ The PDP umbrella is getting filled up and the PDP will sustain the provision of the dividends of democracy to Nigerians,” Sambo promised.

The National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, described PDP as the winning party.

“The achievements of the PDP are tangible all over the nation and this would be sustained,” Mu’azu said.

The Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, said that no amount of conspiracy would stop PDP from winning the elections at all levels in 2015.

The Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mukhtari Shagari, said PDP was the most organised, disciplined and resourceful party in Nigeria.

“The achievements of the PDP in the state and Nigeria generally speak for themselves.

“The president loves Nigeria and he has demonstrated this love in many ways,” Shagari said.

Bafarawa said that he defected to PDP, following the decision of his supporters and promised that Sokoto State would be delivered to PDP at all levels in 2015.

“We will work to ensure the success of the party. We joined the PDP based on principle, to build democracy and Nigeria,” Bafarawa, said.

Liverpool Smash Arsenal To Stake Title Claim

AFP

Liverpool re-energised their Premier League title challenge with a magnificent 5-1 rout of sorry leaders Arsenal on an afternoon of one-way traffic at Anfield on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers’s rampant side struck four times in the first 20 minutes, as Arsenal saw a run of 10 games without defeat in all competitions torn to shreds in brutal fashion.

Martin Skrtel scored twice in 10 minutes to spark the rout, with Raheem Sterling claiming a brace and Daniel Sturridge also finding the net before Mikel Arteta replied for Arsene Wenger’s humbled Arsenal.

The one-sided victory lifted fourth-place Liverpool to within five points of Arsenal, a week before the sides are due to meet again at the Emirates Stadium in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Liverpool’s performance, meanwhile, suggested that they cannot be discounted from the title picture despite media projections of a three-horse race between Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Seeking to return to winning ways after a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion last weekend, Liverpool went ahead inside a minute when Skrtel kneed Steven Gerrard’s free-kick past Wojciech Szczesny from close range.

The same combination doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 10th minute, with Skrtel stooping to guide a looping header into the top-left corner from Gerrard’s right-wing corner.

Sturridge lobbed wide and Luis Suarez hit the post with a blistering half-volley from outside the box before Sterling tucked in a low cross from Suarez to make it 3-0.

The fourth arrived in the 20th minute, Sturridge steering the ball past Szczesny from Philippe Coutinho’s delicately weighted pass as Arsenal’s travelling fans looked on in disbelieving horror.

Sterling scored at the second attempt in the 52nd minute to tighten the screw yet further, before Arteta netted from the penalty spot in the 69th minute after Gerrard was penalised for felling Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Arsenal’s dejection could be compounded later on Saturday as both Manchester City and Chelsea will overtake them if they win their respective matches.

Chelsea, who won 1-0 at City on Monday, host Newcastle United, while City visit Norwich City.

In the late game, meanwhile, Swansea City tackle local rivals Cardiff City in their first match since Michael Laudrup was sacked as manager.

23 Professors Appointed At ABU Zaria

NAN

The Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Kaduna State has elevated 23 Ph.D holders to the status of professors.

This is contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Zaria, by the institution’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Dr Sama’ila Shehu, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria.

According to the statement, besides the professors, the management also approved the elevation of 41 others as readers and principal research fellows of the institution.

“At the 460th regular senate meeting of Jan. 30, the vice-chancellor announced the promotion of 23 professors and 41 readers as approved by the Governing Council of the University.”

It described the promotion as a deliberate attempt by the university management to curb brain drain and to enhance the welfare of both academic and non-academic staff.

Footballer, Maicon Passes On At 25 In Car Accident

Ukrainian club side, Shakhtar Donetsk have confirmed that their 25-year-old Brazilian striker, Maicon Pereira de Oliveira passed on in a car accident early on Saturday.

“He was a talented footballer, [an] open and friendly guy. Maicon loved life and knew how to make it positive and bright. Tragic, untimely and absurd death took away a wonderful person from our ranks,”

“It is a terrible bereavement for each of us. FC Shakhtar expresses condolences and sympathy to Maicon’s family and friends. May he rest in peace”, the club said in a statement published on their official website.

Maicon was on a loan to the Ukrainian league club Illichivets Mariupol until the end of the 2013-14 season.
