Health Workers Begin Indefinite Strike In Kaduna

NAN

Patients on Monday deserted public health facilities in Kaduna State following an indefinite strike embarked upon by health workers.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria who visited Yusuf Dantsoho General Hospital, Tudun-Wada, and Gwamna Awan General Hospital, Nasarawa, reports that patients, including those on admission had deserted the hospitals.

The male, female, accident and emergency wards of the hospitals were closed, while medical doctors on duty were seen in groups discussing the situation.

Mr Obadiah Sunday, Chairman, Joint Health Workers Union, told NAN that the strike was due to the failure of the state government to honour a 2011 agreement on CONHESS salary structure and arrears.

He advised the government to understand that healthcare delivery was a multi-services sector for doctors, nurses and laboratory technicians.

NAN reports that the strike began on Saturday after a 21-day ultimatum by the union.

Meanwhile, the union leaders are holding a crucial meeting with the state government to resolve the action.

PANA/NAN

South African Paralympian, Oscar Pistorius, on Monday, pleaded not guilty to charges against him as his trial over the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, started at the North Guateng High Court in Pretoria.

The trial was delayed by more than an hour because a language interpreter who was required for the first witness had to be located.

Earlier, Pistorius arrived at the court and walked past hordes of reporters into the court.

The man known as the ”Blade Runner” was accused of shooting dead his 29-year-old girlfriend, Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day last year.

Though he admitted firing the shots that killed her, Pistorius said he thought he was shooting an intruder.

Outside the court, there was a heavy security presence with dozens of policemen monitoring proceedings.

In the early hours of Monday, sniffer dogs were sent through the court buildings to ensure it was completely safe.

It was reported that numerous satellite broadcasting vehicles lined the Madiba Street outside the court, while a large airborne camera attached to a drone hovered above the building.

Pistorius, who was born with deformed legs, shot to international stardom when he outran able-bodied athletes.

BPE Approves 42 Companies To Bid For National Integrated Power Plants

NAN

The Bureau of Public Enterprises has approved 42 companies to bid for 10 National Integrated Power Plants in the country.

The BPE said in a statement signed and issued on Monday in Abuja by its Head, Public Communications, Mr Chigbo Anichebe, that the bid would take place on March 7.

It stated that the decision was reached at a recent joint meeting of the National Council on Privatisation chaired by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, and the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company.

“At the meeting of the opening of the financial bids, 42 pre-qualified bidders out of 66 bidding consortia for the 80 per cent equity in the 10 NIPP power plants was approved.

“The 42 pre-qualified bidders met the criteria set in the Requests For Proposal, and passed the due diligence verification conducted on technically qualified bidders.’’

According to the statement, 66 proposals were earlier received on Nov. 8, 2013 from prospective investors interested in the 10 NIPP plants, but were short-listed to 42.

“An inter-agency evaluation team, including security agencies met from Nov. 12 to Nov. 22, 2013 to evaluate the proposals.

“The evaluation report was subjected to scrutiny of the Joint Transaction Committee and the Joint Technical Transaction Committee before approval by the Joint NCP/NDPHCN Board meeting.’’

It was stated that in order to be deemed technically qualified, bidders must meet the financial and quality of business plan that was set out by the committee on privatisation.

The 10 power plants for privatisation are Alaoji, Benin, Calabar, Egbema, Gbarain, Geregu, Ogorode, Olorunsogo, Omoku and Omotosho.

APC Polling Is Dubious – Presidency

NAN

The Presidency on Sunday faulted a purported poll carried out by the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, describing it as “nothing but a great exercise in quackery.”

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, was reacting to a statement issued by the party with regards to the plan to unveil its manifesto on Thursday based on the poll.

Abati told State House correspondents that the statement issued by the party National Publicity Secretary, Lai Muhammed, on the premise of unveiling the manifesto base on the result of the poll was “dubious and suspicious.”

“While we share the view that the APC has the view to unveil its manifesto because nobody really knows what the party stands for.

“Nigerians are curious to have a properly articulated position of the APC rather than its inarticulate engagement with Nigerian public

“But the basis on which the APC is trying to unveil the manifesto is dubious and suspicious.

“The APC is, according to Muhammed, is presenting its manifesto on the basis on certain poll that it conducted which shows the administration in a bad light.

“I have read the details of the poll purportedly conducted by the APC. To start with, polling in any category at all is a very serious business.

“It is not something that any roadside adventurer can engage in.

“What the APC has done is that it has abandoned its core business of politics to dabble into polling, and what it has come up with is a voodoo exercise,’’ he said.

Abati stressed that the purportedly poll conducted by the APC “is nothing but a great exercise in quackery’’.

“APC is not licensed to be a polling agency, it has neither the expertise and the exposure nor the track record.

“It is not surprising that the outcome of its so-called polling is dubious.

“It says for example that if elections were to be held today, whether Nigerians will vote for President Goodluck Jonathan or the candidate of the APC?.”

“To the best of everybody’s knowledge, the APC does not even have a candidate yet.

“It has not named anybody as its candidate, the INEC has not even blown any whistle to initiate the submission of names of candidates.

“The APC on the basis of an unknown candidate is saying that their candidate will have a 10-point lead.

“I don’t think Nigerians are that gullible. It does not make sense, it does not look objective,’’ he said.

Abati faulted the parameters and variables used for the polls as suspicious as well as claim from the purported poll that Jonathan had done nothing to create jobs.

“This is nothing but a gross display of ignorance.

“The ignorance is self-imposed because the administration has done more than enough and will continue to do a lot to demonstrate how it has been creating jobs.’’

Abati said the purported poll, its result and usage are “just clearly partisan politicking.”

APC Criticizes FG’s Insensitivity To Insecurity & Oil Theft In Rivers State

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress says it has watched with ‘amazement, sadness and unpleasant surprise the insensitiveness’ of the PDP-led Federal under the watch of President Goodluck Jonathan pertaining to the wellbeing of Nigerians, particularly Rivers State and her people.

The party in a press statement on March 2, 2014 by Chief Eze Chukwuemeka noted that, “of particular worry to us is the Federal Government’s deliberate refusal to tackle the twin evil of insecurity and oil theft ravaging Rivers State and other parts of the Niger Delta, which has drastically reduced the revenue accruing to the Federation Account, thereby impoverishing most of the states, thus incapacitating them. As we write, many States are unable to pay workers’ salaries, not to talk of paying contractors or embarking on any meaningful projects to better the lives of Nigerians”.

APC recalled that Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, had some days ago while hosting the British Minister for Africa and Member of Parliament, Mark Simonds, lamented about this issue of insensitiveness of the PDP Government at the centre to the insecurity and oil theft in Rivers State. According to the Governor, “My administration had procured two surveillance helicopters that would assist the Federal Government to fight oil theft, but shockingly the Federal Government has refused its arrival to the state.

“I don’t know how much you have seen about oil theft, and I don’t know if the Federal Government is serious about combating oil theft. Why I say this is that for two years now, the federal government has refused entry into the country, two surveillance helicopters paid for by the Rivers State Government. These helicopters have cameras and their job is to fly all over and whomever that is stealing oil, you will see. And the helicopter will have a monitor with the Army, Police, Airforce and with the Department of State Security (DSS. I suspect the refusal may be for political reasons…The helicopters have been packed in America for two years now, and the Rivers State Government is paying demurrage on them…But, if you see how much oil we are losing, we hear it is about 7 billion dollars annually, then you will see that we need the helicopters. We paid for it, not the Federal Government, and we are prepared to help them but the President has emphatically refused to allow the two helicopters into the country for the past two years. We are still paying demurrage.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers State Chapter, strongly condemned what it described as ‘act of gross wickedness’ by the Federal Government which raises serious questions about the sincerity of the PDP Government to fight corruption and protect the pipes that transport the crude oil that sustains the country’s economy.

Parts of the statement read:

“It beats our imagination that the purchase of the helicopters which had the blessing of the Federal Government at the outset should be sabotaged after the Rivers State Government had committed the whopping sum of N30b and is being made to pay demurrage annually. The refusal of the Federal Government to approve the release of these machines into the country that would have benefitted the entire Nigerians is a demonstration of how not to play politics with the life of Nigerians. This is a demonstration of how this government has alienated itself from those it governs and prefers to have our common patrimony kept in private hands while majority of Nigerians continue to wallow in poverty in the midst of plenty.

“We are aware of the political differences between President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Amaechi but must the entire Rivers State people and the rest of Nigerians be punished because of these differences? These days instead of President Jonathan addressing the worsening insecurity in the country that has resulted in the daily killing of unguarded Nigerians, he prefers to celebrate and go about absorbing expired politicians into PDP that Nigerians have rejected because of maladministration by the PDP-led Government. How unfortunate!

“We hereby call on the National Assembly to hasten to investigate the helicopter shame and call the misguided Presidency to order before it shipwrecks our nation. We must as well state that we are very sad that the powers of the National Assembly are being eroded as most of its actions and suggestions are ignored at will by the Presidency that has become tyrannical, myopic, imperial, insensitive and uncaring about the plight of Nigerians. We urge the National Assembly, for God’s sake and for the sake of the future of our country not only to exert its powers but also show leadership traits by saving our nation from a misguided and confused Presidency”.

Interior Minister Confirms Nigeria Grants Radical Islamic Preacher, Abu Philips Visa

The Minister of Interior, Aba Moro, on Sunday clarified that government granted visa to the Islamic preacher, Abu Philips, because he was not in the country’s blacklist.

Moro made the clarification to newsmen at the Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, shortly after the Centenary thanksgiving service attended by President Goodluck Jonathan.

He reacted to online report which alleged that government granted visa to a controversial Islamic preacher.

The online report described Philips as “an extremist and Islamic terror preacher, who lives in Qatar and was banned by governments in UK, U.S., Australia, Germany, Kenya and other countries across the world’’.

Moro said: “let me say this that every country has its own requirement for the grant of visa and in Nigeria’s situation, especially against the backdrop of our security challenges, we also have our requirement for granting of visas.

“We have our own blacklist too of people that because of our security situation should not be allowed into the country.

“And this preacher that you talk about for instance did not fall within the list of people black listed for their activities that are inimical to internal security.

“If his preaching and the content of what he has submitted for the granting of visa that will not undermine the security of the country, then certainly we will grant him the visa.

“That is the purpose we have achieved here.’’

Moro added that Nigeria as a sovereign nation should not be guided by the dictates of other countries and should be able to take its decision at every point in time.

“Let me also say here that we should not set some double standards.

“When the Nigerian government signed the Anti-Gay Law and the West was complaining, we stated that Nigeria nation is a sovereign country that should be allowed to determine its destiny and practices.

“And so, we will not use now the refusal of visa by Germany, UK as a basis for refusing anybody visa here,’’ he said.
