How to Apply and Get an International Driver’s License [Step-by-Step Guide]

An International Driver’s License is a document that allows you to drive in countries other than the one where your driver’s license was issued. It is recognized as a translation of your original driver’s license and is valid for up to one year from the date of issue.

An International Driver’s License is not a standalone document, but rather a supplement to your existing driver’s license. It is not a replacement for a valid driver’s license and cannot be used on its own.

To apply for an International Driver’s License, you must have a valid driver’s license from your country of origin and be at least 18 years old.

You will need to fill out an application form, provide a copy of your driver’s license, passport-size photos, and pay a fee.

It’s important to note that not all countries recognize International Driver’s Licenses. Before traveling to a foreign country, it’s a good idea to check with the embassy or consulate of the country you plan to visit to see if an International Driver’s License is required or recognized.

To get an International Driver’s License, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Check if you are eligible: To be eligible for an International Driver’s License, you must have a valid driver’s license issued by your country of origin. Some countries also require that you are at least 18 years old to apply for an International Driver’s License.
  2. Contact an authorized agency: There are several authorized agencies that issue International Driver’s Licenses, such as the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the National Automobile Club (NAC). You can contact one of these agencies to get the necessary information about the application process and fees.
  3. Fill out an application: You will need to fill out an application form for the International Driver’s License. The form may be available online or you may need to obtain a paper application from the authorized agency.
  4. Submit the required documents: You will need to submit a copy of your valid driver’s license, passport-size photos, and any other required documents such as proof of identity or residency.
  5. Pay the fee: You will need to pay a fee to obtain your International Driver’s License. The fee may vary depending on the authorized agency you choose and the country you are applying from.
  6. Receive your International Driver’s License: Once your application has been processed and approved, you will receive your International Driver’s License. The license is valid for up to one year from the date of issue and allows you to drive in countries that recognize the license.

It is important to note that an International Driver’s License is not a replacement for a valid driver’s license, but rather a translation of your existing license. You will still need to carry your original driver’s license with you when driving abroad.
