Teaching Hospital Raises Alarm Over Increased Number Of Cancer Patients In Nigeria

Authorities of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) have raised an alarm over increased number of cancer patients in Edo and Delta.

The Coordinator of Cancer Registry in the hospital, Prof. Michael Okobia, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Benin.

Okobia said that on-going studies on the prevalence of the disease in Edo and Delta showed that the number of sufferers was on the increase.

He added that a study in 2009 showed that there were 1,090 patients of various types of the disease in the two sister states then.

The coordinator noted that 707 of the sufferers were females, while 383 were males.

He said cancer was preventable and efforts should be made to prevent the disease, pointing out that it was expensive to manage it in developing countries.

“Cancer is preventable and the road to cure is early detection and prompt treatment; so policies should made to encourage prevention and early detection.

“It takes between 10 and 20 years from the first time the fist change occurs in a cell to the time the cancer will show up.

“In Europe and America, cervical cancer is rare because you can prevent the infection through vaccination,” he said.

Okobia said age was the most common risk factor of cancer, stressing that as people grew older, the factors that predisposed them to cancer became manifested in their lives.

The coordinator added that the prevalence of cancer also depended on the population profile of a country.

“People in developing countries don’t live long enough and so they don’t develop certain cancers.

“Somebody has to live old to develop cancer; if a man does not live up to 55 years, he is most unlikely to develop prostate cancer.’’

He listed the most common types of cancer in males as shown in the 2009 study as prostate cancer, cancer of the colon, cancer of the anus, cancer of the lymph node, cancer of the Larynx (voice box) and cancer of the stomach.

He also listed the most common cancers in females as cancer of the breast, the cervix, the ovary, the soft and connective tissues, as well as the womb.

He explained that “cancer is caused by two main factors called genetic and environmental factors.

“Environment factors cover where we live, what we eat, the air we breathe, natural-biological interactions, sexual exposure, type of alcohol we drink and the type of work we do.

“Other environmental factors are the type and quantity of cigarette a person smokes because this predisposes the lungs and infections which can cause cancer of the stomach.

“About 5 -10 per cent of cancers like breast and prostate cancers are caused by genetic factors and are hereditary.’’

Femi Aribisala: Why Pastors Don’t Go To Heaven (2)

I became the Pastor of Healing Wings, Chapel of Faith in 1998. But nine years later, I felt constrained to resign. My resignation came from the sudden realisation that even though God specifically called me to ministry, he never asked me to pastor a church. I have also come to realise that Jesus while Jesus calls prophets, wise men and inspired writers (Matthew 23:34); he calls no one to be a pastor for the simple reason that he is the only pastor of the Church of God.

One single pastor

In the Old Testament, when the bible speaks of pastors, it is often in condemnation. Ezekiel castigates them as self-centred and egocentric. (Ezekiel 34:2-4). Jeremiah says as a result of their incompetence, the sheep of God have gone astray. (Jeremiah 50:6). How does God intend to remedy the situation? The answer lies in Jesus Christ; the wisdom of God.

Solomon warns that we should be wary of a situation where God is said to lead his people through more than one pastor: “The sayings of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings which are given by ONE PASTOR. My son, beware of anything beyond these.” (Ecclesiastes 12:11-12). Therefore, God decrees the summary dismissal of all pastors; to be replaced by one solitary true and faithful pastor: “I will establish ONE PASTOR over them, and he shall feed them- my servant David. He shall feed them and be their pastor. And I, the LORD, will be their God. (Ezekiel 34:23-24). “David my servant shall be king over them, and they shall all have ONE PASTOR.” (Ezekiel 37:24).

In asserting that “the Lord is my pastor,” David himself acknowledges that it is the Lord that must be the pastor of his people. (Psalm 23:1). Much later, Matthew confirms that the promised pastor is Jesus, the root and the offspring of David. (Revelation 22:16). He says: “Thus it is written by the prophet: But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a ruler who will pastor my people Israel. (Matthew 2:5-6). Indeed, Jesus is the only pastor since David who is also “the king of Israel.” (John 10:11; 19:14).

The good pastor

Jesus identifies himself as the promised pastor of the scriptures. He declares: “I am the good pastor; and I know my sheep, and am known by my own.” (John 10:14). In Jesus is fulfilled God’s promise to take care of his flock all by himself: “I will feed my flock, and I will make them lie down. I will seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick.” (Ezekiel 34:15-16).

Since Jesus distinguishes himself as “the good pastor,” it follows that all other pastors are “bad pastors.” Indeed, Jesus declares: “All who ever came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.” (John 10:8). He then maintains that, in the Church of God, there will be one congregation and one pastor: “I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock and ONE PASTOR.” (John 10:16).

That means one church and one pastor. A man cannot have two pastors at the same time? That would just be confusing. The sheep cannot follow two shepherds going in different directions. God hates the double-minded. (Psalm 119:113). James is categorical: “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:8). So we have to make a choice as to which church we belong and who exactly is our pastor.

Bad pastors

Accordingly, Jesus specifically prohibits his disciples from assuming ministerial positions of authority since they are reserved exclusively for him alone. He says: “Do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for one is your teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren” (Matthew 23:8). He says furthermore: “Do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ.” (Matthew 23:9-10).

This means all those still calling themselves “Pastor Moses” and “Father Paul” today are charlatans; without exception. In the Church of God, the Father is the source of all authority and from him it flows to Jesus, the Son. (Matthew 28:18). Jesus does not transfer this authority to some pastor, bishop or pope. Neither does he delegate the authority given to him.

Instead, he warns us: “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet IT SHALL NOT BE SO AMONG YOU; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28).

This means in the New Testament church, all believers are equal in status. There is no guru; no head-honcho; no general overseer. Nobody should be designated pastor today because we are now, one and all, “a royal priesthood?” (1 Peter 2:9). There is no exclusive office of the priest today because Christ has now made all believers priests to God? (Revelation 1:6/5:10). The only power and authority Jesus gives to his disciples is over demons and diseases. (Luke 9:1).

Bible dishonesty

How then can we explain the proliferation of pastors in Christian churches today, in spite of Jesus’ clear-cut injunctions? The answer lays in Paul, a man who systematically undermines Jesus in the bible.

Paul twisted a verse in Psalm 68 to make it seem as if it is written in the scriptures that Jesus would establish ministerial positions. The psalmist says men gave gifts to the Lord: “When you ascended on high, you led captives in your train; you RECEIVED gifts from men. (Psalm 68:18). But Paul distorted this to say men received gifts from the Lord: “This is why it says: ‘When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and GAVE gifts to men.’” (Ephesians 4:8). This then enabled him to say that pastors are God’s gift to men. (Ephesians 4:11-12). This is entirely bogus.

Bible translators conspire to hide Paul’s contradiction of Jesus by translating the same Greek word, “poimen” as “shepherd” (John 10:14); when it refers to Jesus’ injunctions, and as “pastor” (Ephesians 4:11), when it refers to the leadership of the contemporary Christian church. That way, the undiscerning remains unaware that Jesus’ radical injunctions are applicable to the thief-and-robber pastors of today.

What are we to conclude from this? All those who still call themselves pastors today are not disciples of Jesus. Their authority is not from heaven: their authority is from men. Pastors today are people flagrantly violating the will of God. Jesus warns: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21).

$100 Donated To Nigerian Church Worshipers Causes Stir Online

The online community, was Sunday thrown into confusion as an Abuja based Church in Nigeria, Holy Hill Church decided to give each member that attended the service $100.

Contrary to what is known of most Nigerian churches today – with some pastors persuading members to give all they’ve got. The demands ranging from tithes, building offering, offering, thanks giving offering, covenant offering, testimony offering and so on.

Members that attended the church located in the Wuse 2 area of the Federal Capital Territory had a surprise waiting for them, as someone (member) they claim decided to give each person $100.

The members’ donation as expected of a church with most of it’s members and parish pastor actively on twitter was announced to the online community.

Mixed reactions trailed the donation as some were concerned about the source of the money and why the said donor decided to donate $100 each to the entire congregation .

One of the earliest reactions came from a member of the congregation, fagbohun ifeoluwa who wrote “@ife_fagbohun Somebody just sowed $100 into the life of everyone in service this Morning! Wow! I Love my Holyhill @HolyhillChurch”

Others however thanked the person that donated and defended the act as Christ had done feeding thousands of his followers.

A member wrote, @nnabros So I just got an envelope in church. Everyone got the envelope. Inside each envelope was a $100 bill. Thanks @HolyhillChurch #PSun

A follower stated, “@Miss_Jayla sharing food isn’t any different to giving money. $100 can feed a person for a month instead of one meal.”

“@Miss_Jayla crusades can be likened to trade fairs, religious channels as those QVC sales ones too.”

She continued “@Miss_Jayla You want to question the source of the money the church shared? Betwn offerings, tithes, thanksgiving & pledges, 2 weeks of collection tops”

In the same vein, @cchukudebelu: “If a husband, wife, son & daughter attended Holy Hill today – that’s $400 (N64,000) – goes a long way meeting the monthly bills.”

Mr. Ohimai Amaize, a Special Assistant to Nigeria’s Sports Minister, also a member on the church went on to defend the donation. He wrote, @MrFixNigeria The Pastor has been teaching a series on money. Someone felt moved to sow a seed

Another group of persons believe the church members are not poor and the donation could have been part of the missing $20 billion unaccounted for by the Nigeria National Petroleum Cooperation.

“@WilDeji: ‘The poor and needy’. No be Holyhill dem dey sha

Chine Ezekwesili “@ChineEzeks Won’t be surprised if the $100 this benevolent individual shared in @holyhillchurch came from the missing $20 billion. It’s Nigeria after all.”

“@ChineEzeks If you live in a country where billions of money is stolen every year, you probably should question the source of any ostentatious gift.”

Some followers went on to allude that the strategy to distribute money, will increase the membership of the congregation.

Emmanuel Onuoha reaffirmed this stance with his post,Holy Hill church abj shared $100 (17k) to every member today. Watch out for turn out next Sunday. Such is our generation’s love for money…

Ronald Ike Nzimora @ronaldnzimora HolyHill Church just raised the bar. If you want to start a new Church and want members, better get your $100 bills ready.

The dramatic church donation saw the Holyhill Church trending in lagos at some point into the conversations. “Holyhill Church, @holyhillchurch is now trending in #Lagos http://trendsmap.com/ng/lagos”

EFCC To Prosecute Suspended CBN Governor, Sanusi Over Alleged Fraud

Nigeria’s Vanguard Newspaper is reporting that the Suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, may be prosected by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged acts of financial recklessness in under administration’s as CBN’s head.

The papers indicated that, sources close to the Presidency, disclosed that Sanusi may be invited this week for questioning on the allegations against him.

President Goodluck Jonathan had last Thursday suspended Sanusi as the CBN Governor and appointed the most senior Deputy Governor of the bank, Sarah Alade, as acting Governor of the bank until the conclusion of ongoing investigations into breaches of enabling laws, due process and mandate of the CBN.

Recall that upon arrival at the ExecuJet Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, the suspended governor was briefly detained by SSS operatives in mufti and was asked to surrender his international passport. He was also asked not to leave the airport until the Lagos state director of the SSS arrives.
The CBN governor was later allowed to leave after the operatives communicated with superiors but his passport was seized.

Sanusi’s Removal: Senator Bukola Saraki Reveals Senator Abaribe’s Statement Is Misleading

Senator Bukola Saraki has expressed shock over comments credited to the Chairman Senate Committee on information, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe on the suspension of Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

Senator Abaribe had said:

“The Senate said president Goodluck Jonathan acted within the ambit of his statutory function in the suspension of the Central Bank Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi”

Senator Saraki has now come out through a press release to contest that statement as he claims the issue of Sanusi’s suspension was not debated in the Senate.

It is noteworthy and for record purposes that at no time on the floor of the hallowed chamber did the Senate debate the issue of the suspension and or removal of the CBN Governor, hence Senator Abaribe’s statement is misleading and should be regarded as his own personal opinion and not that of the entire Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Saraki revealed.

Senator Saraki also stated that the suspension of the CBN governor was unlawful as the President did not have two third of the senate supporting the removal:

The law that establishes and guides the operations of CBN does not provide for suspension of CBN Governor. The Act clearly states the terms and conditions under which CBN governor can be removed from office as contained in Section 11 (f) of the CBN Act of 2007. It states that the removal of CBN governor by the President shall be supported by two third majority of the Senate praying that he so be removed. This apparently, to the best of my knowledge, is not seen to have be done in this case.

He also explained that the issue at hand was not all about Sanusi Lamido Sanusi but the integrity of the Central Bank:

As a matter of emphasis, the term of a CBN Governor is constitutionally guaranteed. The nomination of CBN Governor by the President is simply performing a legal duty and not that of expressing his pleasure. It must equally be noted at this juncture that the issue at hand is not about the person of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi but about the integrity of the institution involved. In as much as I do not have any reason against the nomination of the New CBN Governor or his competency, I stand firm to say that the institution is bigger than each and everyone of us and it is in this light that we as stakeholders in the system of governance should not for any personal reasons or sentiment, weaken our institutions under any guise, he continued.

He also urged his fellow lawmakers to draw a thick line and show sensitivity between their personal opinions and that of the legislative bodies. He also requested that the lawmakers uphold the laws in the constitution and defend it:

I urge my fellow Distinguished Senators on the need to be guided by law and to be explicit and also differentiate their opinions and thoughts especially when commenting on issues of national interest in their private capacity as opposed to when speaking an official capacity. It is my believe that due to the importance and sensitivity of this issue, that when the Senate resumes on its next legislative day, it will view this matter from a bipartisan approach and not along party lines or other divides but rather in the best interest of our dear country.

As legislators and representatives of the people, we must be seen to protect our laws, defend it and upholds the constitution of the Federal Republic in the interest of the present generation and even that of the unborn. As we celebrate the centenary of our dear country, it is time we all understand the need for change in our individual and collective approach to issues and interest of Nigerians.

John Terry Desires New Chelsea Contract

Chelsea skipper, John Terry made headlines on Saturday as he scored Chelsea’s lone goal in injury-time; a goal which won his team 3-points in a 1-0 win over a dogged Everton side

Terry has been at Chelsea since 1998 which implies he has been a Blue all his life and he has confirmed he desires a new contract with the Premier League leaders as his current contract expires at the end of the season

Speaking to BT Sport, the captain said:

“I certainly hope I can stay. You’ll have to ask the club that question – I can’t answer for them,”

He also spoke about the important winning goal which condemned Roberto Martinez’s men to defeat.

“Recently dropping points away to West Brom, it’s important to pick up three points at home,” he said.

“We’re top of the league and sitting well. It’s down to the others now to catch us.

“[It was a] great ball from Lamps, [I] just managed to get a touch on it and I think it came off Howard in the end as well but [I’m] delighted with the win and the three points.

“They made it quite difficult but they’re a very good side and playing well under Martinez and it was a tough game today.”

Mourinho Proud Of Narrow Win Over Everton

Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho is of the belief that his side’s late and narrow win over Everton earlier today was a compensation for their late draw at West Brom last week.

At The Hawthorns, the current premier league leaders were forced to a 1-1 draw as Victor Anichebe netted an 87th-minute equaliser for West Brom.

Today at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea could only manage an injury time win courtesy captain John Terry who had challenged Everton goalkeeper, Tim Howard from a Frank Lampard free-kick.

In his post match reaction, Mourinho said:

“The feeling when you lose points in the last minutes, like we lost two points against West Brom, is a bad feeling. When you win it’s the opposite. It’s basically a compensation of the points we lost against West Brom.

“‘For the last 15 minutes we were strong; we created; we pressed; we dominated. When you score (a late goal) you can speak about luck … but the reality is the boys chased that.

“A point for them (Everton) is good. A point for us is not good, and in the end maybe we deserved it.”

That win against Everton ensured Chelsea remains at the summit of the Premier League table for this weekend at least.

Wayne Rooney Bags $104m Manchester United Contract

Striker, Wayne Rooney has signed a new five-and-a-half year contract with premier league champions, Manchester United in a deal worth about £300,000 a week.

The 28-years-old £250,000 a week contract would have expired next year.

On his website, an elated Rooney was quoted as saying:

“I’m happy everything is now finalized and I can carry on concentrating on my football.”

It appeared the English forward was set to leave Old Trafford last summer after then United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed the player had asked for a transfer. That claim was denied by Rooney

Pellegrini To Face UEFA’s Disciplinary Committee Over Post Match Comments

Manchester City manager, Manuel Pellegrini has been charged with misconduct by the European Governing body of football, UEFA over his post-match comments after his side lost 0-2 to Barcelona at the Etihad during the week in a Champions League fixture.

The Chilean had criticized Swedish referee, Jonas Eriksson in strong terms after the match as he questioned the referee’s ‘impartiality to both team’.

In Pellegrini’s news conference on Friday, he had apologised for his comments but that has not stopped UEFA from charging him. The case will be treated by a disciplinary team on the 28th of February

UEFA’s statement regarding the issue reads:

Following an investigation by the UEFA disciplinary inspector, UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Manuel Luis Pellegrini concerning the press interviews given to media after the above-mentioned match.

“The Manchester City head coach is charged for violation of the general principles of conduct.”

Nigeria’s Border With Cameroon Sealed

Nigeria’s Northeastern border with Cameroon has been closed by the Nigerian Army to avoid Islamic extremist groups from using the country as a platform for attacks.

This is according to Brig. Gen. Rogers Nicholas of the 23rd Armored Brigade. He told reporters today (Saturday) that he was using emergency powers so as to ensure illegal crossings between Nigeria and Cameroon.

Customs and immigration officials are currently working with soldiers and the police to ensure that no one crosses into Nigeria.

This move may adversely affect hundreds of traders who cross the border often.

Reno Omokri: On Sanusi’s Suspension, The Opposition And Politwitters

The recent suspension of the erstwhile Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has ignited a debate on Social Media and as has become typical with many pundits, the discourse has been dominated by sentiments rather than facts.

As Sanusi has indicated that he will be challenging his suspension in court, I will not make this piece about him and recent events surrounding him. Yes, I will cite some examples of double standards as regards the approach taken by some analysts, but in my view, the matter is now best left to the courts.
What I will say however to those who are propagating the propaganda that the President suspended Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to stop him from speaking is this: it was Sanusi’s job that was suspended, not his mouth and anyone who knows him knows full well that he will not let anything come between him and a microphone.
Opposition politicians and fifth columnists have continued to pay the price for underestimating President Goodluck Jonathan’s leadership abilities. They confuse analysis for paralysis.
In the first month of the year 2014 for instance, there have been several positive events that benefit everybody in Nigeria. Nigeria’s economy overtook South Africa’s as Africa’s largest economy. Not a squeak from the opposition. Internationally renowned firm, Renaissance Capital, revealed that Nigeria is the number one destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Africa. Still not a squeak from the opposition. The United Nations officially certified Nigeria free from Guinea Worm in January. Radio silence from the opposition.
But within the same month of January, the opposition have clung on to every rumour, innuendo, gossip and careless talk that has the capacity of painting the president in bad light. And where there is no negative rumour to spread, not to be undone, they make one up!
A most embarrassing example of this ‘opposition magic’ was the news circulated by the opposition to the effect that former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, had upbraided the President for permitting the arrest of an APC operative who said that should the party lose elections in 2015 due to rigging (knowing the opposition, any election they lose is an election that has been rigged) “the only alternative left to get power is to take it by force; this is the reality on ground”.
Eventually, it turned out that ex president Babangida had said no such thing. The statement was a fabrication which was traced to the Facebook page of the same APC official who said the taking of power by force is the only reality on the ground.
It should now be obvious to all Nigerians that these persons are setting the stage for a plan B should their plan A fail to materialize. The thing about a plan A though is that you have to have one for you to even have a fighting chance of the plan being realized, thus, an opposition that focuses on insulting the President instead of formulating a winning plan and sharing it with Nigerians obviously has no plans and therefore plans to fail.
And it is this lack of planning and coordination that fixates the attention of the opposition on attacking the President instead of his policies. Why do they do this? Those who are discerning know that the only way you can effectively attack policies is if you have alternative policies. But where you don’t have alternative policies, you are left with no option but to go ad hominem.
The same people who were online attacking the President for allegedly budgeting a billion Naira for feeding at the Presidential Villa (and they deliberately suppressed the fact that hundreds of police and military officials feed at the Presidency) are today justifying the 1.257 Billion Naira that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, under Sanusi Lamido Sanusi claimed it spent on Private Guards and lunch for police men.
The individuals who took to Social Media to attack the Presidency’s proposed travel budget of 2.4 billion Naira in the 2014 Appropriation Bill are today justifying the 9.24 billion Naira spent by the CBN on training and travel expenses for the year 2012.
Thank God the Presidency did not spend even up to 1 billion on legal services. If it did, the hired social media hounds would have used this for propaganda. The question should be why are they silent on the 20 billion Naira the CBN under Sanusi claimed it spent on ‘Legal and Professional Fees’?
It is because these voices are procured. There is nothing wrong in offering your services to politicians, but do not hide this fact and pass off yourself as an objective and independent activist.
Alas, many in the opposition have successfully blinded the eyes of the public to their duplicity.
I cite an elementary example of the nature of the opposition. At the beginning of the year, I devoted the first few days of 2014 to tweeting about the achievements of the Jonathan administration and projecting the positive things that were already happening in Nigeria. When I tweeted, I had expected opposition sponsored elements (and there are many on Twitter whom I have christened Politwitters) to contradict these achievements. Not unsurprisingly, they chose to insult. When I provided evidence that Nigeria’s per Capita Income in 2009 (the year before President Jonathan ascended to power) was $1091 and that this amount had improved by 70% to $1721 in 2013, what I got thrown back at me was “na that one we go chop?” or “how does that affect the price of Garri?”
They scoffed at the Jonathan administration’s new National Automobile Policy, saying it was laughable to imagine that Nigeria would be a car manufacturing nation within a year. Well, Nissan has announced that their first made in Nigeria Nissan SUV would be rolled out in April. They criticized the President for declaring a State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, yet their own governors found that the emergency had significantly eroded the terrorist’s ability to launch terror attacks ensuring that there was enough peace for them to visit Borno state.
And so, greeted with one success after the other of the President’s policies, the opposition has realized that they cannot compete with him on the level of ideas. And what do they do?
They have carefully taken into consideration the President’s personality and have come to an awareness that he is a man that would not go negative or attack personalities and their conclusion is that that is the only front on which they can overwhelm him.
But they have not reckoned with the connection the President has with ordinary Nigerians. This is a President that does not keep secrets from Nigerians. A President that is secure enough in himself and his position to allow them to dialogue without any boundaries.
In fact, from studying President Jonathan’s style of leadership, I have come to the conclusion that the Jonathanian key to growing one’s influence is to speak to the public in a way that makes the public want to listen to you and listen to the masses in a way that makes the masses want to speak to you. That is why Nigerians are excited about the impending National Conference. They know that their President is listening. After all, he listened to them in 2010 when they asked him not to ban the Super Eagles from international soccer tournaments. He listened to them when they overwhelmingly asked him to run in 2011. He listened to them when they said they did not want Nigeria to succumb to the practice of gay marriages.
The President even said it himself on his first Presidential Media Chat that he has a great capacity to listen to people, even if they are talking rubbish, without betraying emotion, thus communicating with his listeners that he is giving the fullness of their being his focused attention in order to understand them which does not mean that he agrees with them.
And you know what that does? It ignites the type of folksy connection that the President now enjoys with Nigerians because they know that their President seeks first to understand them before he asks them to understand him. With President Jonathan, there is no monologue or dialogue of the deaf. With him, Nigerians can always count on a dialogue of interested parties.
Nigerians know that their President will never threaten anybody, be they human being, dog or baboon. Citizens of this great nation know that the man of peace they elected to pilot their ship of state will never tell the down trodden to ‘go and die’! In fact, they know that even if they are in a war torn nation thousands of miles away, their gentleman President will send planes to get them out of harm’s way. They know that their President will never celebrate his birthday with 1 billion Naira. Instead, they are certain that when they are hungry, their President will ensure that the down trodden of society get billions of Naira worth of grains and food staples so that they can hunger no more. This is why the 2013 Global Hunger Index of the International Food Policy Research Institute applauded Nigeria for her significant reduction of hunger levels.
Nigerians further know that they have a philosopher king who reads regularly and who has encouraged Nigerians, through his personal initiative (The Bring Back the Book Project, launched on December 20, 2010) to read. Readers are leaders and the President doesn’t just read, he also donates books to schools through the bring back the book project since he believes readers become leaders because the mind is a muscle and reading is the only gymnasium in which you can build up your mind muscle.
It is precisely this mind muscle that many of those who attack the President with ad hominem words lack. Instead of having highly defined mind muscles, they have built up their ego muscle. Alas, the worst possible combination you could ever find in men is to have a weak will and a strong ego. Unfortunately, this is the case with those who throw stones because they are attuned to destroying rather than building.
So, let them keep insulting and casting aspersions on the person of President Jonathan. Those who engage in these ad hominem attacks on the President only prove the truism that you can take the man away from the gutter but you may not be able to take the gutter away from the man.
The thing that they forget when they indulge in that type of behavior is that as Chief MKO Abiola of blessed memory said ‘even if you change the name of honey it would still be sweet’!
And for those who wonder why the President does not ever respond to such opposition attacks on his personality, I would also use another proverb to try to assuage their wonderment. A man who is carrying an elephant on his head has no need to squash an ant with his toe.
