Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi Condemns Suspension of Sanusi

The Rivers State Governor, Mr Chibuike Amaechi has said the suspension of the governor Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Malam Sanusi Lamido, by President Goodluck Jonathan was unconstitutional.

“He (Jonathan) does not have such powers. He knows that nothing will happen that was why he took that action. So, I think the preachers should begin to preach what we called the liberation theology. You (church leaders) are supposed to have more responsibilities to hold government accountable.”

Speaking on Sunday at Christ Church, Port Harcourt. The Governor said the President lacked the powers to suspend a CBN governor.

“You can imagine how President Jonathan announced the sudden removal (suspension) of the CBN Governor.

He urged the church to insist on accountability from the nation’s political leaders, stressing that it was a duty expected from Christians and religious leaders in the country.

Group Plead With Senate President, David Mark To Contest 2015 Presidential Elections

A group under the aegis of the Advance Nigeria Group, ANG, has called on the Senate President, David Mark to join the 2015 presidential race.

The Coordinator General of the ANG, Barry Idoga Odeh said David Mark is a politician with immense wealth of experience that can be used to advance the growth and stability of the country.

“we are ready to mobilize Nigerians for the candidature of David Mark if he yields to our request to join the presidential race.

Addressing journalist in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, Odeh said Mark has contributed immensely to ensure stability in the polity.

“We cannot forget in a hurry how his doctrine of necessity saved our nascent democracy from imminent collapse when the entire country was caught in a web that was beyond our widest imagination.

“At this moment of our national history and development, it has become imperative that we exploit the experience of the likes of Senator Mark to further advance the cause of development of this country.

“Today, this country is faced with protracted challenges despite being endowed with both human and natural resources, therefore, the president we desire at this time must be courageous, focused and detribalized; the ANG sincerely believe that Senator Mark possess these qualities and therefore should be compelled by Nigerians to run in the 2015 presidential election.

Defection To APC: Tambuwal Consults With Obasanjo In Closed-Door Meeting

NAN

Abeokuta – Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, Speaker of the House of Representatives, on Sunday in Abeokuta dismissed as incorrect insinuations that he had ever planned to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tambuwal denied the allegation shortly after a closed-door meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the latter’s residence in Abeokuta.
The Speaker was in the former president’s residence for a meeting which commenced at about 12.30 p.m. and ended at 2.15 p.m. (about two hours later).

Tambuwal, who reaffirmed his membership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), told newsmen shortly after the meeting that he had come to visit a PDP national leader.

“I have come to visit our PDP national leader. `Baba Obasanjo’ and I are still in PDP,” the Speaker who was accompanied by three of his colleagues — House Minority Leader, Sumaila Kawu, as well as Ajibola Muraina and Aminu Shagari — said.

Tambuwal further explained that he was in Abeokuta to “consult with Obasanjo on matters of national interest’’.

“Baba Obasanjo is a leader, not only in Nigeria, but in Africa, and it is only appropriate for us in positions of authority and leadership to occasionally come and consult him on matters of national interest and that is why I am here.

“There are lots of issues in Nigeria today. Of course, there is the issue of Petrol Industry Bill (PIB) that we are considering in the House, while the Constitution amendment is also ongoing.

“There are many other key and important legislations that are also before the parliament. So, we need to consult our leaders on such important and vital issues, to get inputs from them before we conclude deliberations,’’ he said

Chelsea Manager, Mourinho Hopes Mikel Is Fit To Face Galatasaray

AFP

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is hoping at least one of David Luiz or John Obi Mikel is fit to face Galatasaray on Wednesday.

Luiz and Mikel were both absent through injury for Saturday’s dramatic 1-0 Premier League victory over Everton, which saw captain John Terry mark his return from a muscle strain with an injury-time winner.

With January midfield recruit Nemanja Matic ineligible for the UEFA Champions League, Mourinho is keen for his options not to be further depleted when Chelsea travel to Turkey for the first leg of Wednesday’s last-16 tie.

“We have three days so let’s see,” said Mourinho after the Everton game.

“With Mikel and David Luiz, I don’t know if they can recover. It’s important we have at least one of them because we don’t have Matic for the Champions League.”

Mourinho also offered an update on minor injuries to Oscar and Ramires.

The latter was introduced as a half-time substitute against Everton, after Oscar failed to shake off a pre-game complaint.

“It’s not a dangerous one, just a painful one,” said Chelsea’s boss of Oscar’s injury. “He said he could cope with the situation, clearly he couldn’t.

“Ramires had a similar situation to Oscar, I tried to protect him and not play him but the game demanded I play him. Clearly, though, he could cope with the situation.”

Jonathan Is Surrounded By Incompetent & Fraudulent Aides – Suspended CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido

Nigeria’s former Central Bank chief, Lamido Sanusi on Sunday described the president who ousted him as a simple man trying to do well who has been undermined by incompetent and fraudulent aides.

Sanusi was suspended by President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday over alleged financial misconduct, a move seen by many analysts as politically motivated.

Sanusi has accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) of misappropriating $20 billion (14.5 billion euros), allegations that earned him powerful enemies across the government.

In an interview with AFP in Lagos, Sanusi said many of the people advising Jonathan are sycophants who do not speak frankly or honestly about the extent of corruption in government.

“When you sit with President Jonathan himself he appears a nice simple person who is trying his best to do his best,” Sanusi said.

“His greatest failing obviously is that he is surrounded by people who are extremely incompetent, who are extremely fraudulent and whom he trusts.”

Sanusi learned of his removal from office while in Niger on Thursday and immediately returned to Lagos, where agents from the Directorate of State Services (DSS) seized his passport.

On Friday, he secured a temporary protective order from the Federal High Court in Lagos barring Nigerian intelligence agents from the DSS or police from arresting him.

“I thought taking away my passport was the beginning of infringement on my fundamental human rights,” Sanusi told AFP, explaining why he had already sought court protection.

While no charges have been filed against him, Sanusi said he was prepared for whatever attacks may come.

“That we are here today means that I have taken the decision that I will face the consequences of whatever I do,” he said.

He said his “fierce independence” had been an annoyance to the government since 2009, culminating with his sustained, public attack on the NNPC, widely seen as the epicentre of corruption in Africa’s top oil producer.

“If I am sacrificed in whatever way, my freedom or my life… if it does lead to better accountability it will be well worth it,” he said

Sunday Oliseh: Still Think Nigeria Deserves The “Giant” Tag After Reading This?

As We observed Germany, authoritatively dictate terms to Europeans on how the current crisis in Ukraine & other issues are to be settled and enumerate consequences to wrong doers,we could not help but see similarities in size, magnitude, potency etc with my Homeland Nigeria, but still wonder why we do not carry such similar might and respect.

For decades we have flattered ourselves with the term “Giants Of Africa” and it seems this erroneous terminology is blinding us from progression and taking our rightful place in the world.Which should be : one of the Giants of the world!

Nigeria is by every means a Gigantic and extraordinarily Rich Nation! In the same class as the USA,Germany,United kingdom,China,Russia,India . And this is not just flattery but read along and you will know why we feel so.

You may be asking yourself, if this is really true, how come the quality of life for Majority in Our beloved Nigeria, is in no way near that of the aforementioned nations? It starts with You and I!

What makes a Nation a Giant?

To lay claim to being gigantic, certain elements have to be present:

Geographical Size; Nigeria measures 923,768 km2, Three times the size Of Germany.

The size of Human Resources. This is dependant largely on your population. (170,000,000) 170 Million people,( 3 times germany and half of the United States of America)

Natural resources: Nigeria has a wide array of mineral resources, such as:Coal, Gold, natural gas, bauxite, tantalite, tin, iron ore, limestone, niobium, lead and zinc etc.

Agriculture: Groundnuts, cocoa, and palm oil, coconuts, citrus fruits, maize, pearl millet, cassava, yams and sugar cane.

It is believed that Nigeria has the most underutilised Arable Land in the World!

How on earth could you have half of the above and not be a Giant? How is it possible to not walk toe to toe with the world super powers?

Could it be because we are lazy? blind? uninformed or just plain sleeping Giants?

We know how to get rich, but not Wealthy

Some may ask what’s the difference,if you are rich you are equally wealthy no? Well rich you get to live well with no financial problems and “maybe” your kids.

When you are wealthy ,your grandchildren, great grand children will have nothing to do with finacial problems.

This you can only achieve by Wealth investment in ventures that keep “multiplying” and cannot be taken away. Eg Coca Cola, hotel chains(Hilton hotels) etc

Corruption:

Nigeria is more than crippled by this social ill.Ever since i knew life ,it was a regular sight to see officials take a bribe to look the other way, and It is kind of like embedded now in our DNA.

Corruption exists in the western world in huge magnitudes, but the difference is that the western world curropt officials try to leave a legacy at least as a proof of their existence.

Example: A westerner might be responsible for 100 dollars, spends 90 on the contract he is burdened with and “pocket” 10, the opposite is what happens in mother Niger.

The most saddening aspect is that there are no consequences and in some cases they are applauded by their neighbours or sometimes criticised for not having looted enough 🙂

Education:

Most Nigerians think and do believe that the Government is a third party. You read or herar terms like “no worry,na Government Money” not understanding that the government is them.

What is the Government by the way?

Certain Riches and resources(like Oil,Gold etc) belong to a nation and cannot be owned directly by individuals,it is collective wealth. Certain decisions that concern the country have to be decided urgently etc To decide this on behalf of the whole populace a group of people are elected, chosen or appointed, and delegated the powxer to manage this kind of issues on our behalf. These people are the Government!

In fact the Government is indirectly you and me. So inactivity by the government or “Government Money” is our money my brother and sisters. Anybody who enriches himself from the government funds is stealing from me and You! Got it now? 🙂

Nigeria is A Giant!

From the above we are definitely Giants but a sleeping one ready to be awakened!

When major decisions get taken in Africa and the world, without consultation with the most populous Black nation in the world (Nigeria) it is not only unjust but a slight on our importance but that is rightfully because we do not act like Giants!

We should have a bigger say in CAF (confederation of African Football) for example, because without Nigeria, there is no African commercial football and the millions it brings into CAF’S coffers!

We are so bent on infighting that we forget to unite and get collectively wealthy at the detriment of other nations and not our own brothers and sisters!

In summary we are definitely Giants, but Giants with a huge “luxurious” problem. Luxurious i say because, the solutions to these problems are present in our country and abundant.

This Sleeping Giant Called Nigeria, just has to wake up and the world will be ours to Explore otherwise we will break!

“Boko Haram Attacks Horrific & Wrong” United States Government

The United States Secretary of State, John Kerry has condemned the recent Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria leading to the deaths of hundreds.

In a statement Sunday, US Secretary of State John Kerry described the recent Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria as “unspeakable,” “horrific” and “wrong.”

The statement was tweeted by a journalist working for The Associated Press, Jon Gambrell .

John Kerry noted that the US is working with Nigeria on BokoHaram approach “while protecting civilians and ensuring respect for human rights.”

Boko Haram has been abducting Christian women in recent attacks, converts them to Islam on pain of death and then forces into “marriage” with fighters.

The group, whose name broadly translates as “Western education is sinful”, has killed thousands during a four-year insurgency against the Nigerian state, targeting the police and armed forces as well as politicians and then turning on Christians in the predominantly Muslim north of the country.

Former Minister, Caleb Olubolade Declares For Ekiti Governorship Election

NAN

The immediate past Minister of Police Affairs, Retired Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade, on Saturday declared his intention to run for Ekiti governorship election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Olubolade declared in Ado Ekiti at a reception in his honour by members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Ekiti chapter.

NAN also reports that Olubolade resigned his position as the Minister of Police Affairs to vie for the governorship position.

He said that he would not borrow money from the capital market to finance the state if elected.

He also said that his administration would run a programme that was in tandem with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan to bring development to the state.

Commenting on the N25 billion bond sought by the incumbent, Gov. Kayode Fayemi from the capital market, Olubolade said that “borrowing of money by Fayemi is a proof of his failed government.

“I want to assure you that I will not borrow a dime to finance the state and all I am going to do as programmes will align with the transformation agenda of President Jonathan.

“I am determined to rescue Ekiti from the pangs of bad governance.”

He said the incumbent administration had failed Ekiti people as could see the signs in the level of poverty, unemployment and poor policy formulation in all facets.

He thanked Jonathan for giving him the opportunity to serve the nation, saying he would justify the confidence reposed in him if voted into office.

The Ekiti PDP Chairman, Mr MakanjuolaOgundipe, assured the people that the mismanaged funds by the incumbent administration would be recovered when the party eventually takes over leadership.

He noted that the present administration promised free education, free health services, employment, but that yet they were not free in Ekiti today.

Ogundipe urged the people to vote for PDP’s candidate in the forthcoming June 21, governorship election.

Brother To Late Taraba Speakers, Daniel Tsokwa Wins Bye-Election In Takum

NAN

Mr Daniel Tsokwa, younger brother to the late Taraba Speaker, Haruna Tsokwa, has been declared winner of the bye-election for Takum 1 Constituency in Taraba.

Declaring the results in the early hours of Sunday, the Returning Officer, Dr Ibrahim Wayo, said Daniel of PDP got 36,070 votes to defeat his opponent, Musa Danjuma of APC, who scored 4,479 votes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed that the election was monitored by no fewer than five resident electoral commissioners from neighbouring states and scores of senior officers from INEC Headquarters.

There was heavy presence of security agents, including the army and the police, deployed across the six wards of the constituency to monitor the election.

Commenting on the results, the state’s APC Chairman, Alhaji Hassan Ardo, attributed his party’s loss to what he described as misinformation.

He said “the National Secretariat of the APC was misinformed and this led to the substitution of the candidate that won the party primaries.’’

It would be recalled that the late speaker, Tsokwa, who was at the centre of the Taraba political saga, died on Nov. 4, 2013, creating the basis for the bye-election.

iPhone Owners Download The Patch Before Your Emails Get Hacked, Apple Security Flaw Could Allow Hackers To Intercept Emails

0

By Joseph Menn

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 21 (Reuters) – A major flaw in Apple Inc software for mobile devices could allow hackers to intercept email and other communications that are meant to be encrypted, the company said on Friday, and experts said Mac computers were even more exposed.

If attackers have access to a mobile user’s network, such as by sharing the same unsecured wireless service offered by a restaurant, they could see or alter exchanges between the user and protected sites such as Gmail and Facebook. Governments with access to telecom carrier data could do the same.

“It’s as bad as you could imagine, that’s all I can say,” said Johns Hopkins University cryptography professor Matthew Green.

Apple did not say when or how it learned about the flaw in the way iOS handles sessions in what are known as secure sockets layer or transport layer security, nor did it say whether the flaw was being exploited.

But a statement on its support website was blunt: The software “failed to validate the authenticity of the connection.” []

Apple released software patches and an update for the current version of iOS for iPhone 4 and later, 5th-generation iPod touches, and iPad 2 and later.

Without the fix, a hacker could impersonate a protected site and sit in the middle as email or financial data goes between the user and the real site, Green said.

After analyzing the patch, several security researchers said the same flaw existed in current versions of Mac OSX, running Apple laptop and desktop computers. No patch is available yet for that operating system, though one is expected soon.

Because spies and hackers will also be studying the patch, they could develop programs to take advantage of the flaw within days or even hours.

The issue is a “fundamental bug in Apple’s SSL implementation,” said Dmitri Alperovich, chief technology officer at security firm CrowdStrike Inc. Adam Langley, a senior engineer at Google, agreed with CrowdStrike that OS X was at risk.

Apple did not reply to requests for comment. The flaw appears to be in the way that well-understood protocols were implemented, an embarrassing lapse for a company of Apple’s stature and technical prowess.

The company was recently stung by leaked intelligence documents claiming that authorities had 100 percent success rate in breaking into iPhones.

Friday’s news suggests that enterprising hackers could have had great success as well if they knew of the flaw.

People Power: Ukrainian President Ousted

0

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — The whereabouts and legitimacy of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych were unclear on Sunday, after he left the capital, his archenemy Yulia Tymoshenko was freed from prison, and one of her top allies assumed presidential powers.

Parliament struggled to work out who is in charge of the country. Fears percolated that some regions might try to break away after three months of political standoff that has left scores of people dead in a country of strategic importance to the United States, European nations and Russia.

Yanukovych maintains that parliament’s decisions in recent days are illegal. But he did not speak publicly Sunday or make any apparent effort to stop them.

A plane with Yanukovych onboard was denied permission to take off Saturday evening from Donetsk, a city in eastern Ukraine that has been part of the president’s support base, the State Border Guard Service said. The president’s spokesman said Sunday morning that even he does not know where Yanukovych is.

Ukraine is deeply divided between eastern regions that are largely pro-Russian and western areas that widely detest Yanukovych and long for closer ties with the European Union. Yanukovych’s shelving of an agreement with the EU in November set off the wave of protests, but they quickly expanded their grievances to corruption, human rights abuses and calls for Yanukovych’s resignation.

The Kiev protest camp at the center of the anti-Yanukovych movement filled with more and more dedicated demonstrators Sunday, setting up new tents after two days that saw a stunning reversal of fortune in Ukraine’s political crisis.

Russia’s position will be important for the future of this country, since Moscow has been providing financing to keep Ukraine’s economy afloat and the two countries have deep but complicated ties.

Russia’s finance minister on Sunday urged Ukraine to seek a loan from the International Monetary Fund to avoid an imminent default. Russia in December offered Ukraine a $15 billion bailout, but so far has provided only $3 billion, freezing further disbursements pending the outcome of the ongoing political crisis.

Signs emerged Sunday that Russia might throw its weight behind Tymoshenko. And a leading Russian lawmaker, Leonid Slutsky, said Sunday that naming Tymoshenko prime minister “would be useful for stabilizing” the tensions in Ukraine, according to Russian news agencies.

Tensions mounted in Crimea, where pro-Russian politicians are organizing rallies and forming protest units and have been demanding autonomy from Kiev. Russia maintains a big naval base in Crimea that has tangled relations between the countries for two decades.

The political crisis in this nation of 46 million has changed with blinding speed repeatedly in the past week. First there were signs that tensions were easing, followed by horrifying violence and then a deal signed under Western pressure that aimed to resolve the conflict but left the unity of the country in question.

“We need to catch and punish those with blood on their hands,” Artyom Zhilyansky, a 45-year-old engineer on Independence Square on Sunday, referring to those killed in clashes with police last week.

He and other protesters called for law enforcement chiefs to be held accountable and Yanukovych put on trial.

The newly emboldened parliament, in a special session Sunday, voted overwhelmingly to temporarily hand the president’s powers to speaker Oleksandr Turchinov, a top ally of Tymoshenko.

The legislators also voted to remove a string of government ministers and may name a prime minister later Sunday.

However the legitimacy of the parliament’s flurry of decisions in recent days is under question. The votes are based on a decision Friday to return to a 10-year-old constitution that grants parliament greater powers. Yanukovych has not signed that decision into law, and he said Saturday that the parliament is now acting illegally.

In Kiev’s protest camp, self-defense units that have taken control of the capital peacefully changed shifts Sunday. Helmeted and wearing makeshift shields, they have replaced police guarding the president’s administration and parliament, and have sought to stop radical forces from inflicting damage or unleashing violence.

Ukrainians’ loyalties remain divided. Emotions mounted around statues of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin, after angry protesters took them down in several towns and cities. On Sunday, some pro-Russian protesters took up positions to defend Lenin statues in Donetsk and Kharkiv. Statues of Lenin still stand across the former U.S.S.R., and they are seen as a symbol of Moscow’s rule.

Parliament set new presidential elections for May 25, and Tymoshenko says she will run.

Tymoshenko, whose diadem of blond peasant braids and stirring rhetoric attracted world attention in the 2004 Orange Revolution, was both sad and excited as she spoke late Saturday night to a crowd of about 50,000 on Kiev’s Independence Square, where a sprawling protest tent camp was set up in December. Sitting in a wheelchair because of a back problem aggravated during imprisonment, her voice cracked and her face was careworn.

But her words were vivid, praising the protesters who were killed this week in clashes with police that included sniper fire and entreating the living to keep the camp going.

“You are heroes, you are the best thing in Ukraine!” she said of the victims.

The Health Ministry said the death toll in clashes between protesters and police that included sniper attacks had reached 82 over the last week. The protesters put that figure at over 100.

Tymoshenko urged the demonstrators not to yield their encampment in the square, known in Ukrainian as the Maidan. “In no case do you have the right to leave the Maidan until you have concluded everything that you planned to do,” she said.

The crowd was thrilled.

“We missed Yulia and her fire so much,” said demonstrator Yuliya Sulchanik. Minutes after her release, Tymoshenko said she plans to run for president, and Sulchanik said: “Yulia will be the next president — she deserves it.”

Yanukovych’s support base crumbled further as a leading governor and a mayor from the eastern city of Kharkiv fled to Russia.

A plane carrying Yanukovych tried to take off Saturday evening from the eastern city of Donetsk but didn’t have the proper documentation so was turned away, Oleh Slobodyan of the State Border Guard service said Sunday. The president was driven off in a car from the airport, he said. Slobodyan said there has been no record of Yanukovych leaving Ukraine by land, and it was not clear where the plane was headed.

Yanukovych, who spoke on television Saturday in Kharkiv, accused his opponents of trying to overthrow the government.

“Everything that is happening today is, to a greater degree, vandalism and banditry and a coup d’etat,” he said. “I will do everything to protect my country from breakup, to stop bloodshed.”

European officials urged calm. Ukraine’s defense and military officials also called for Ukrainians to stay peaceful but did not clearly come on the side of the president or opposition.

The past week has seen the worst violence in Ukraine since the breakup of the Soviet Union a quarter-century ago. Orthodox priests held services Sunday to honor the dead.
