JAMB Registrar Announces UTME Dates And New Formats

JAMB registrar, Prof Dibu Ojerinde announced on Thursday, in Abuja, that the paper-based version (PPT) of the 2014/2015 UTME will take place on April 12 while the computer-based version (CBT) will take place on May 17.

The CBT will be conducted over 12 days.

“In any case, we are prepared. We have 300 centres for CBT while we have 2000 centres for PPT. This is the last time we are going to do PPT; it will be all CBT next year,” Ojerinde said.

He said the choice of CBT was to curb examination malpractice and ensure immediate release of results and encourage candidates to prepare better.

“We’ve limited options to four institutions; one university, one college of education, one polytechnic and one institute for entrepreneurship,” Ojerinde added.

“[We are doing this] because of the action of our institutions. They will call both first choice and second choice candidates for post-UTME, collect money from them. And when the second choice candidates score higher than the first choice, they will prefer the first choice candidates.”

The JAMB registrar warned candidates not to register for both PPT and CBT, saying their results would be cancelled.

He urged candidates wishing to change their school choice to do so before registration closes, or risk paying N1,000 as fine.

The sale of UTME forms will end on March 14 while the online registration will end on March 25.

Government Will Continue To Sponsor Pilgrimages – Jonathan

Credit: NAN

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Thursday in Abuja that the Federal Government would continue to sponsor holy pilgrimages in spite of criticisms in some quarters.

He stated this when he received the report of the Federal Government’s delegation to the 2013 Christians Pilgrimage at the Presidential Villa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the reports was submitted by an 11-man delegation led by the President of the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor.

”Nigeria is a secular country and the popular wish of the majority is for government to keep supporting pilgrimage,” Jonathan said.

He, therefore, said that his administration would not deviate from the popular wish of the people for sponsorship to pilgrimages.

“Let me assure that government will continue to support our movement to the holy lands.

“Nigeria is a religious country and that is the only thing we have and that is why certain things we do other may criticise us but our people believe that, that is the best thing to do.

“As long as we believe that that is the best thing for our people, we have no hesitation to do what the people believe is right.”

The president faulted some state governors for lopsided sponsorship of pilgrimages and assured that the Federal Government would address the challenge of zero-sponsor of pilgrimage by some states.

He specifically directed the Vice-President to take up the matter with the affected governors.

“We believe that in all the 36 states, there is no State that we do not have people from different faiths, Christians and Muslims.

“Luckily myself and the Vice President were both governors before and we knew what we did in our days as governors.

“States funds are general funds and the country is a secular society.

”Whether you are a Christian governor or a Muslim governor you are spending money that belongs to all Nigerians.

“Assuming your state is 99.99 per cent Christians and even there is only one Muslim there, he has to be protected.

“At the same time, even if your state is 99.99 Muslims and there is only one Christian, that Christian needs to be protected.”

Jonathan said that the 2013 Christian Pilgrimage exercise was spectacular because he personally participated in it along with some state governors and ministers.

He said his decision to make the position of the leader of government delegation to pilgrimage permanent has paid off.

The president said the grey areas in both Christians and Muslims pilgrimages had been reduced because of the consistency in the leadership structure.

He said they had been able to manage the challenge of pilgrims absconding, assaults on pilgrims and petty crimes.

Jonathan assured that the Federal Government would look into the report and the recommendations.

In his remarks before presenting the report, Oritsejafor said that 27 states, including FCT, participated in the exercise.

He said 14,833 pilgrims were transported to the State of Israel and Greece.

Oritsejafor, however, said that Kano, Katsina, Rivers, Sokoto and Zamfara states did not sponsor any pilgrim during teh exercise.

He said that no Nigerian Christian pilgrims absconded during the 2013 exercise, adding that it was also concluded within the sme year without a spill over to 2014.

The CAN president the 2013 exercise was special because it was the first time a serving President of the country led a high-powered delegation on holy pilgrimage to Israel.

He said the exercise also witnessed the signing of BASA between Nigeria and Israel which would make flights easier for intending pilgrims and facilitate strong business tie between both countries.

Oritsejafor said that the delegation recommended that the President should prevail upon various ministries and departments responsible for the execution of the BASA with Israel to conclude all arrangements, to make the next pilgrimage take full benefit of the agreement.

The delegation, according to him, also recommended that the embassies in Rome and Tel-Aviv should be properly funded for the missions to effectively function as pilgrimage host.

He said the delegation also recommended that the state governments, especially those in the North-West zone, be further encouraged to sponsor Christians on pilgrimage.

He suggested that Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission should encourage indigenous airlines to participate in future exercise.

Oritsejafor also urged the Federal Government to provide necessary screening machines at various pilgrims’ camps to reduce the difficulties faced by pilgrims at point of departure.

He also recommended the introduction of an annual award programme where recognition would be given to States, organisations and individuals for outstanding record of sponsorship of sizeable number of pilgrims.

Oritsejafor equally urged the President to make the pilgrimage an annual event because of its “immeasurable spiritual benefits”.

Boko Haram Kills Nine Soldiers Killed In Adamawa

NAN

Boko Haram on Thursday killed nine soldiers in Izhe Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Madagali, where about 50 persons died in the attacks by the insurgents two weeks ago, is a border community with Cameroon.

Local officials and military sources said the insurgents ambushed the soldiers while on their way to foil another attack by the group following a tip-off.

Efforts to contact the Brigade Commander of the 23rd Armoured Brigade, Yola, Brig.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, were unsuccessful as he was said to be on a special assignment with the command Public Relations Officer.

However, a top military source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the attack.

The source said that the soldiers carried out a raid on a Boko Haram hideout in the porous border villages, which resulted in a prolonged gun duel with the insurgents.

The source dismissed the claim that the soldiers were ambushed.

He said, “During the attack, a fierce battle ensued between our soldiers and the insurgents which lasted several hours and both side lost men.”

Chairman, Izhe Madagali Local Government Area, Mr. Maina Ularamu, confirmed the incident but could not ascertain the number of casualty.

He confirmed that the soldiers were attacked while on a mission to repel attack by another splinter terrorist group.

Ularamu said, “The soldiers were going to repel a planned attack at Izhe border village when they were ambushed by the heavily armed insurgents.

“As I am talking to you, most villagers at the border areas have since fled to Madagali, the administrative headquarters, for fear of possible attacks.

“We are calling on the government to deploy more troops with armoured tanks in the area. These Boko Haram insurgents have more sophisticated weapons than the soldiers.”

According to the council boss, the insurgents were armed with anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons mounted on their vehicles.

Residents said that some colleagues of the killed soldiers were firing indiscriminately into the air in protest after the incident.

Hospital sources also confirmed that corpses of the killed soldiers were deposited at a Federal Medical Centre, Yola.

“Nine corpses of the killed soldiers are deposited here in Federal Medical Centre, Yola. We only counted nine for now,’’ said the hospital sources.

The corpses of the nine soldiers were said to have been deposited in the mortuary of the Federal Medical Hospital in Yola.

Military authorities were also said to be making frantic efforts to contact the deceased’s relatives on Thursday.

Borno Needs More Troops To Combat Boko Haram Militants

BBC
The governor of the north-eastern Nigerian state of Borno has called for more troops to be deployed to combat Boko Haram Islamist militants.

Kashim Shettima was speaking during a visit to the town of Konduga, where 39 died in an attack on Tuesday.

A mosque and more than 1,000 homes were also razed to the ground, residents said.

Boko Haram has been conducting a four-year campaign of violence to push for Islamic rule in northern Nigeria.

Last May, President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Borno and the neighbouring states of Adamawa and Yobe in a bid to stop their insurgency.

But the BBC’s Will Ross in Nigeria says the military is once again facing criticism for not doing more to protect the people of the north-east and failing to detect and attack another convoy of Boko Haram militants.

Tunde Leye: From Good Governance To #JKFeedback, Tour Na Tour

Credit: Tunde Leye
Credit: Tunde Leye

In Nigeria, almost everything is a hustle. When I was growing up, one of the injustices my little mind could never come to terms with was the politics of breaking plates. When my mum broke a plate, everyone would rally around her to find out if she was injured. It would be declared an error and then all the broken pieces would be swept away. But if Tunde broke a plate, as Burna Boy sang, yawa dey. It could not have been a mistake, lailai. I was just plain careless, and would get a correct caning or one of my mum’s trademark backhand ifoti oloyi (that literarily means “the dizziness inducing slap”).
Sometime last weekend, the Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi organized a tour of the state. Many of the prominent young people in the Nigerian online community were invited in to come and see the “wonderful” work Fayemi was doing in Ekiti state. Reports have it that they were taken around completed projects in the state, with varying revenue allocation and other funding figures given by officials who took them around. A fancy hashtag was created for it #jkfeedback and the tour was livetweeted with some writing about it after the event. Some that were outside the country even expressed a desire to fly in for the tour if they had been in possession of a private jet. The reactions were expectedly interesting. Some ridiculed them for attending, whilst others defended them vehemently and still others descended into open abuse of those who were for and against their attendance. Others still called up tweets by the attendees decrying presidential lunches and good governance tours. There were those who used their writing skill to paint satirical pictures of the event. One wonders if this attendance was not facilitated by the entrance of a certain, to use the popular parlance, twitter overlord, into Ekiti government as deputy Chief of Staff. We have a short memory in Nigeria, I know; but fortunately, the event organized that parallels this isn’t that far back in the past, hence we still remember.
Labaran Maku, Minister of Information organized a “Good Governance Tour” in 2013 and created a media firestorm. Many of the people who were on Fayemi’s tour were amongst those vociferous in their critic of Maku. This piece is not about the effectiveness or correctness of such tours. I personally think they are an unnecessary waste of public resources, since they are funded from public coffers. The crux of the matter though is the fact that those who criticized such a move by someone from the other side almost exultantly took part in it once it was someone from their “progressive” side that embarked on the same jamboree. It is especially distasteful when one hears the reports that they were paid while posturing otherwise and slamming the Federal Government for paying its own tour delegation (forget the fact that they made brave attempts to tell us the amounts were insufficient after it had been revealed). It reminds me of Orwell’s Animal Farm where the rule began as “All Animals Are Equal” but was edited by the pigs to read “All Animals Are Equal, But Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others”. It sounds like this in this tour business. “All Tours Are Bad” they shouted until #JKFeedback. It became “All Tours Are Bad, Except Those We Are Invited To”.
If you are partisan, it is not wrong. But quit hypocritically criticizing one party for doing a thing when you will employ the same methods without batting an eyelid. It is an insult on our collective intelligence, especially when you now adopt a “we will insult and demean the intelligence of anyone who dares to say we are wrong” approach.
I recall how some panned Chude Jideonwo when The Future Awards went to the presidency, and also when they had that 2011 lunch with GEJ. It makes me wonder if they did so because they disagreed with the idea or if it was mere bad belle at not being the one getting such opportunities. This clannish political hypocritical cabalistic dramatization has to stop. It will do everyone, including me, well to remember that whatever we say and do in public domain is hardly forgotten. The internet has a vast memory and a simple Google search will bring it up, as people have expertly deployed against the likes of Reuben Abati. The whip that they used to beat the elder wives like Abati and Reno is very available to flog you when you become today’s men.
Then we will not have situations where fire and brimstone is spewed over Stella Oduah’s bullet proof vehicles, whilst the accusations against Fashola over bullet proof vehicles get no looking. We would not have white elephants like Opon Imo celebrated as the solution to a state like Osun’s education needs whilst presiding over the unneeded rancor over what students wear to school. We will not overlook the deployment of policemen to beat and harass protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate whilst condemning Mbu for his despotic tendencies in Rivers State. We will not assume that men who when in the PDP were painted as demon spawn suddenly transform into angels of light the moment they defect to the APC and when they go back to PDP, they lose this sainthood and become the vilest of beings again. We will look at the actions, irrespective of the party that champions them, and measure each with the same yardstick, praising where there is need and condemning when necessary.
The other side of the matter is the weakness in the media team of the Federal Government, practically relinquishing the framing of the overriding narratives of issues to the opposition. It is this that enables them frame similar actions in different lights, painting one as evil and the other as the epiphany of divinity.
Finally, the vast majority of Nigerians must learn to decipher what is really going on and see beyond whatever façade everyone puts up to see what the real inclinations are. We should look those who come and shout loud that “our tour is good and any other tour is bad” that all na tour jare.
