Femi Aribisala: The Bible, A Book Of Wheat And Weeds

Paul’s statement that all scriptures are written by the inspiration of God is, itself, not inspired.

The bible is the most important book ever compiled. However, it is also one of the most dangerous. It is used to edify and it is also used to deceive. Christians like to pretend that the bible was written by one person. But in reality, it was written by 40 different authors from three continents in three different languages.

Jesus says: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat.” (Matthew 13:24-25). This portrait of the kingdom is directly applicable to the bible. The bible is a book of wheat and weeds. In it, the truth of God is presented side-by-side with grievous misrepresentations of God.

Justification of Evil

The bible can be used (and has been used) to justify evil. It tolerates incest: “They got him drunk that night, and the older girl went in and had sexual intercourse with her father.” (Genesis 19:33). It supports the selling of daughters: “If a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not be freed at the end of six years.” (Exodus 21:7). It supports witch-hunting: “A witch must not be allowed to live.” (Exodus 22:18).

The bible supports pogroms: “The God of Israel says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbour.’” (Exodus 32:27). It supports discrimination against the handicapped: “No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed.” (Leviticus 21:18).

The bible supports slavery: “Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.” (Leviticus 25:44). It supports discrimination against women: “Set the value of a male between the ages of twenty and sixty at fifty shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel; and if it is a female, set her value at thirty shekels.” (Leviticus 27:3).

Human sacrifice

The bible supports human sacrifice: “Not even a human being who has been unconditionally dedicated may be bought back; he must be put to death.” (Leviticus 27:29). It supports capital punishment: “The assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses.” (Numbers 15:36). It supports drinking of blood: “They shall not lie down until they have eaten what they capture and have drunk the blood of the slain!” (Numbers 23:24).

The bible supports the rape of virgins: “Save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.” (Numbers 31:18). It supports infanticide: “We destroyed all the people in every town we conquered- men, women, and children alike.” (Deuteronomy 3:6). It supports religious intolerance: if an idol-worshiper is found, Moses says: “take that person outside the town and stone him to death.” (Deuteronomy 17:2-5).

The bible supports genocide: “When the LORD your God lets you capture the city, kill every man in it.” (Deuteronomy 20:16). It supports “suicide-bombing:” “Samson killed more people at his death than he had killed during his life.” (Judges 16:30). It supports the abduction of women: “While the girls were dancing, each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife.” (Judges 21:23). It supports cannibalism: “We boiled my son, and ate him.” (2 Kings 6:29). It has anti-Semitic vitriol: “(Jews) are against both God and man.” (1 Thessalonians 2:15).

Bible Errors

The bible is full of mistakes. We are told Abraham had several sons (Genesis 25:1-6); then only two (Galatians 4:22); and then only one. (Hebrews 11:17). Jacob was buried in a cave at Machpelah bought from Ephron the Hittite (Genesis 50:13); but then again he was buried in a sepulchre at Shechem bought from the sons of Hamor. (Acts 7:15-16). Moses had only one wife. Nevertheless he had four different fathers-in-law; Reuel (Exodus 2:18/21); Jethro (Exodus 4:18); Raguel (Numbers 10:29); and Hobab. (Judges 4:11).

Jesse had eight sons with David as the eighth. (1 Samuel 17:12-14). Then again he had seven sons with David as the seventh. (1 Chronicles 2:13-15). Saul’s daughter married to David is mistakenly said to be Merab instead of Michal. (1 Samuel 18:19). Jehoshaphat, king of Judah (2 Chronicles 20:35), is mistakenly said to be king of Israel. (2 Chronicles 21:2). Zechariah’s prophecy about the thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12-13) is mistakenly attributed to Jeremiah. (Matthew 27:9).

Bible Contradictions

The bible is also full of contradictions. Moses says God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. (Exodus 20:11). But Isaiah says God is never tired and does not need to rest. (Isaiah 40:28). God created man last, after creating animals. (Genesis 1:25-26). But then again he created man before creating animals. (Genesis 2:18-19). The Nephilim giants were wiped out in the flood. (Genesis 6:4). Nevertheless, their descendants reappeared after the flood. (Numbers 13:33). The peoples of the earth had different languages. (Genesis 10:5; Genesis 10:20). But then again they had only one language. (Genesis 11:1).
Moses says God asked the Israelites to build him a sanctuary so he can dwell among them. (Exodus 25:8). But Stephen insists God does not dwell in temples built by men. (Acts 7:48). Moses says God changes his mind. (Exodus 32:14). But Balaam says he does not. (Numbers 23:19). God is said to have blessed Jehu for destroying the house of Ahab. (2 Kings 10:30). But Hosea says God condemned him for doing so. (Hosea 1:4).

Pauline Confusion

This goes to show that Paul’s statement that all scriptures are written by the inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16) is, itself, not inspired. Indeed, more discrepancies come from Paul himself than from any other person in the bible.

Paul says God is not the author of confusion. (1 Corinthians 14:33). But Moses says God confused the tongues at Babel. (Genesis 11:9). Paul says God is “the God of peace.” (Romans 15:33). But Moses says he is “a man of war.” (Exodus 15:3). Paul says God dwells in unapproachable light. (1 Timothy 6:16). But David says he dwells in thick darkness. (Psalm 18:11). Paul says no one is righteous. (Romans 3:10). But Moses says God considered Noah to be righteous. (Genesis 7:1).

Paul says the law was given through angels. (Galatians 3:19). But Moses says God gave it to him directly. (Deuteronomy 10:1-5). Paul says all men are condemned to death because of Adam’s sin. (Romans 5:12/19). But Moses says children are not to suffer for their parent’s sins. (Deuteronomy 24:16). Paul says God justifies the ungodly. (Romans 4:5). But Moses and Solomon say he does not. (Exodus 23:7; Proverbs 17:15).

Thank God for Jesus

We Christians make fools of ourselves by insisting, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that everything in the bible is true. God raised one man to resolve this mess. He is the Amen; the one true and faithful witness. That man is Jesus.
Jesus is the final authority on things of God. Only Jesus’ words present the undiluted and unvarnished truth of God. (John 14:10; John 8:26). They should be put in our hearts, and not just left in a book. (Jeremiah 31:31-33).

BREAKING: Finally, Tambuwal Defects To APC

After months of denial, the speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has dumped the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for main opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC.

Mr. Tambuwal formally announced his defection Tuesday at the House plenary.  The speaker, for months, denied he was moving to the APC despite openly associating with the party after series of reports.

Tambuwal who formally defected to the APC; “says it’s about my political fortunes in my home State”.

Tambuwal had attended a meeting of the opposition party in Sokoto State and denied defection even after attending such a meeting for APC stakeholders in the state.

He said the state governor, Aliyu Wammako, had invited him for the meeting after he was snubbed by a visiting PDP delegation to the state, led by Tony Anenih, the Board of Trustees chairman.

Mr. Tambuwal is expected to contest for the governorship of his native Sokoto State.

His months of denial is believed to have been informed by his concerns about losing his position as the speaker.
Shortly after the declaration Tuesday, Mr. Tambuwal adjourned sitting of the lower house of parliament to December 3.

Otedola Is ‘The Billionaire Who Bounced Back’ On Cover Of Forbes Africa’s New Issue

Nigerian billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola has graced the cover of the November issue of Forbes Africa Magazine. The bespectacled and grey-bearded oil magnate is seen wearing his white yoruba native attire and a broad smile on the cover of this new issue.

He was interviewed by Abisola Owolawi who also co-wrote the article with renowned journalist, Tolu Ogunlesi.

Van Gaal Blasts Van Persie For Stupid Celebration

Manchester United striker, Robin Van Persie secured a very important point for his club-side when he scored a late equalizer against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday. It was the last minute of injury time when RVP scored a left footer from a freekick after Branislav Ivanovic was sent off for a second bookable offence. The Dutch striker celebrated his late goal by pulling off his shirt and throwing it in the air and that led to him being shown a yellow card by referee, Phil Dowd.

His manager, Louis Van Gaal spoke about the celebration of Van Persie who was captain on the day and didn’t appear pleased as he labelled it a stupid action:

“He did a stupid reaction after the goal. You can be excited but you don’t have to pull your shirt off because then you have a yellow card. It is not so smart”, the manager said.

The striker admits he let his emotions get the better part of him but was pleased they got the goal. Speaking to Manchester United TV, here’s what he said:

“I know it’s one of the rules that you have to keep your shirt on but sometimes you forget and everything comes together and the whole place explodes.”

“It was one of those fantastic moments and the main thing today is that we got something out of this game because we deserved it.”

“It was a big relief for the fans, for the players and for everyone at Manchester United that we got the goal in the end. The whole stadium exploded and it gave us a big boost”, he stated

Ugochukwu Ugwuanyi :Our Failing Which Prepared Governors To Fight Local Councils’ Autonomy

Let me begin by letting you know that what you are about to read isn’t what I planned to present you today. Although, the topic I had in mind to write on was still informed by the National Assembly’s proposed amendment to the constitution which called for the granting of financial
and administrative autonomy to the nation’s third tier of government, the perspective would have indeed been remarkably different. But something happened along the way as you shall soon find out.

Like most Nigerians, I had thought that the said proposal was fait accompli for the highly anticipated independence for our heavily abused local councils. We had all reasoned that its autonomy was cocksure to take effect in no time. In fact, it was the euphoria and excitement of
most Nigerians about the matter that led me into joining them in the assumption, yet, charging them to begin learning how to keep a watchful eye on council chairmen and their counselors. I felt that since local governments are on their way to having autonomy, the least we as Nigerians should do is to begin getting ready to effectively monitor them like we do to the federal government.

Seeing how sections of the media could not hide their bias for local governments being granted autonomy, I started putting facts together that would help me draw the attention of all who care to listen to the given that the proposed amendment will expose local councils to so much resources and influence, hence the need to hold those overseeing that level of government accountable. Ergo, the need for us not to continue turning a blind eye to the now customary inactivity and nothingness we get from grass-root administrators. Earnestly speaking, this was the direction the essay you are reading now would have taken.

But that was not to be as we now have to pay dearly for conveniently forgetting the powerful force that would constitute a stumbling block to the beautiful legislation. And the obstacle wasted no time in reminding us that it is very much around waiting for our object of joy to get to its vicinity. It bears stating this object of joy plainly. It is basically an amendment to the constitution carried out by members of our National Assembly that would make our grand norm to clearly set out the provisions for funding, tenure, elections powers and responsibilities of
local governments in the country and remove them from the mercy of state governments.

As beautiful a legislation many agree this to be, those to be affected by it were prompt in letting us know that that stumbling block they had always been hasn’t suddenly changed to become a stepping stone. These very powerful personalities stopped the lullaby even before the baby could fall asleep. If you are still wondering the set of people being referred to here, then should you be told that it is none other than our governors! They are the Ceazers who wasted no time in seizing our fit of euphoria about being bequeathed what would make our country better.

But before you begin raining all manner of causes on these killjoys; let’s take a look at how impolitic we ourselves acted! We actually could have deferred to them. Once members of the National Assembly adopted the proposal, we would have pended our jubilation and diverted the energy into soothing and massaging the ego of the overlords. We should have made them understand that it wasn’t by happenstance that federal legislators adopted the proposed amendments at this point in time. That it was because the present dispensation was winding down. As such, the lawmakers figured that whatever proposal they are coming up with would
have nothing on those currently in the saddle, but have everything on those coming post 2015.

You can be sure that if we had taken this course instead, they wouldn’t have come so hard in turning the Blues we are enjoying into Metallic Rock. They wouldn’t have been so pitched against the proposal to the extent that their Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, which had been
factionalized for over a year now, adopted common position on a matter for the first time since its estrangement; one that re-enacts how the Passion of Christ obliterated the age-long animosity between King Herod and Pontius Pilate.

However one looks at it we goofed! Even if we found it difficult massaging the ego of the emperors we have as governors, we should be kept mum when the proposal for local governments’ autonomy by the National Assembly happened on us. Who knows, our quietude on the matter could have caused other proposed amendments to shroud this particular one that they would have none of. We could even had played up those amendments which favoured them and made so much noise about it to the extent that they would have been so enthralled and serenaded into ordering their states’ assembly members to approve everything. Can you now see how uncommon common sense is?

Our National Assembly members who want us to believe they are serious about having local governments become independent of state and the federal government could have also helped by importing into the amendments proposals the governors would find so irresistable, just like they awarded life pension to their principal officers. It doesn’t matter if they handed their respective states to outgoing governors as retirement benefits. They could have simply transmuted the states to become the governors’ estates. If that is not enough, they could have proposed for them to go to the Breton Woods institutions and borrowed whatever amount they want as severance benefits. Now, tell me how they would have concerned themselves with local governments’ autonomy when they should be so busy trying to figure out the exact amount they would
want to secure. Please o, if the satire is lost on you; just know that I am kidding!

But then, that does not mean we shouldn’t have played out everything in our bag of tricks to get the governors to side with us on the proposal in question. We just had to because of how powerful our warped system has made these guys. I am talking of the same set of people who made their states’ assemblies to spill out the honey poured into their mouth  by the National Assembly. Remember that the federal legislature had in an earlier constitutional amendment proposed for state legislatures to be independent of the state executives, headed by governors. The same governors ordered their assembly men to vote against being independent.

Aren’t we then daydreaming when we think the governors wouldn’t have their way in this instance? Now you can understand why I proposed that it wouldn’t be out of place for us to do whatever we can to placate them into letting us take our local councils away from their firm grip.
Remember the Jang faction of the NGF did not mince words in letting us know of their confidnce in the proposal being thrown out when it gets to the state houses of assemblies. In fact, his faction was reported to have said that they will mobilize lawmakers in their states to block the amendment.

The federal government, civil society activitists, stakeholders in the local government systems, rights groups, the media and all else interested in our nation having a working local government
administration system worth its name had better risen up to the  continued tyranny of our state governors. One keeps wondering what democracy we practice which sees the whim and caprices of 36 persons prevail over important matters that can set our nation on the path of prosperity.

Until those who can rein these governors in (that is if we have any person or group with that ability) go ahead to do just that, the best we can do is to massage the egos of the governors and promise them heaven and earth whenever we want to get things out of them. We failed to do  this. As such, it essentially became our failing which led the governors to get ready to fight the autonomy aptly granted our third tier of government by the National Assembly members.

Oyo PDP Kick Against Patience Jonathan’s Request To ‘Accommodate’ Ladoja

Leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State have  expressed their displeasure at a request by the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan,  Dame Patience Jonathan, for a former governor of the state, Rashidi Ladoja, to be “accommodated” in the PDP.

According to The Punch, Mrs. Jonathan was said to have made the request during a meeting she had with the state PDP leaders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja nine days ago.

Ladoja, a former member of the PDP and now the National Leader of the Accord Party, is nursing a governorship ambition. He was also present at the villa meeting.

A PDP source who was at the meeting said that  most of those in attendance were stunned when the President’s wife suggested that Ladoja should be supported to realise his ambition. He said that her suggestion was rejected outrightly.

“The President’s wife asked that we should accommodate someone who is not a member of the party. How do we do this?

“She was tactically telling us to support his governorship ambition because she was saying she knew that Ladoja has the capacity to win election and defeat the All Progressives Congress in the state.

“But we disagreed and told her so. That was what happened, but she promised to convey another meeting soon where the issue would be further discussed.

“But I can tell you that we are not pleased with her activities in our party. We don’t understand where she derives the power to interfere in running of the PDP. In fact, most of us may not attend any other meeting summoned by her because she is not our leader.

She should keep off because if we field a wrong person, we may not defeat the APC in our state during the governorship election.”

Former Governor, Chief Christopher Alao-Akala said it was true that the meeting with the First Lady was held, but he said he   was not asked to step down for Ladoja noting that she merely asked for Ladoja to be ‘accommodated’ by the party.

“Yes, it is true that the First Lady met us. But she didn’t ask me to step down. She said we should accommodate Ladoja in our party and we said it would be difficult to do so because he is not a member of the PDP. That was what happened.”

A Media Assistant to the President’s wife, Mr. Ayo Adewuyi, denied knowledge of the meeting while Ladoja’s media aide, Lanre Latinwo stated categorically that his boss is not planning to leave the Accord Party.

“Accord party in Oyo State remains one united entity and will continue to grow in leaps and bounds due to the sincerity of leaders of the party and the genuine love of the people.

“We urge members of the party and the general public to disregard the insinuation in all its entirety asserting that the Accord Party at the moment is not involved in any alliance talk.”

Pornographic Materials Finds Nest At Motor Parks

Public display of obscene materials especially pornographic books and materials has often been frowned at by public analysts and moralists, however, an investigation carried out by The Punch  reveals that these obscene materials are now publicly displayed without shame or inhibition at Major motor parks in Lagos. Read the full article below:

There is no dull moment at Obalende Motor Park. Almost every time of the day, there is a beehive of activities at the park.

Voices from rickety loud speakers mounted on commercial buses alternate between lewd music and frenetic calls for passengers. But the first gains go to roving petty traders who hawk chilled soft drinks and other edibles they sell to commuters.

Near the bus terminus are more established ‘ad hoc’ activities. This sub-sector is replete with cobblers, ‘vulcanisers’, food and compact disc vendors and others who contribute, in no small measure, to the economy of the park. They make less fuss about their wares yet they command the attention of passengers and commuters.

Last Friday was no exception. By noon, two young men dealing in compact disc sales had set up wares and were already attending to customers. With the rippling muscles and six packs of boxers on the jackets of some of the discs, the setting seemed normal at first. But a closer look revealed differently. Nude women and men posing in different erotic postures were on the jackets of many of the compact discs. It was obvious that the majority of his products displayed so openly are pornographic.

Our correspondent who had watched the men from inside a commercial vehicle alighted to get a copy. Sitting by the side of the stall was an old man printing tickets to people who seemed oblivious to the ‘wares’ displayed beside them. While some passengers streaming into the terminus stared openly, others abruptly averted their gaze, refusing to make further eye contact with the materials.

Pointing to one of the CD, the journalist haggled with him over the cost and   probed him on the appropriateness of his business. The products cost a token N150 each.

“Make u dey hide dis thing nah. If task force catch u, na wahala be that’, she started.

“Which task force? Na before bi dat o. Once you settle, you are okay,’ he said.

“Dem dey collect money? Dis country don spoil’’

“Before nko? Dem no get their price?

Later, our correspondent made a detour out of the terminus to the other side, where she met one of the unit officials of the National Union of Road Transport Union. Behind her, business activities continued, not missing a beat. Efforts to speak with the chairman of the unit were not successful as it was learnt that he and other key officials had gone to Onikan Stadium for the declaration of a governorship aspirant, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode.

However, findings by our correspondent showed that sales of pornographic materials are a norm in many motor parks in the state. From the popular Okokomaiko park, Agege motor park to those in Iyana-ipaja and some others, sales and display of pornographic materials unfold with varying degrees. While some hide the materials, others care less, flaunting erotic pictures on posters.

While the state’s new traffic law does not overtly address issues of pornographic and decency in motor parks, a human rights lawyer, Mr. Fred Agbaje, told our correspondent that Governor Babtunde Fashola in 2010 signed an executive order proscribing the sales, broadcast and display of pornographic materials in open places, including motor parks. In addition, he pointed to sections 149 and 150 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State which prohibits the publication of obscene matters and performance of obscene plays.

“The government has provided the law to regulate such morally offensive activities in our parks and bus stops, it is now left for the police to ensure that violators are arrested and prosecuted before the appropriate courts.

“But if the police choose to look the other way, you can’t blame Fashola. You can’t blame the chief judge. But the environmental taskforce who are busy arresting people who indiscriminately cross the road at Ojota should also keep the society free of this morally-provocative business. If we don’t care about our own moral as adults, shouldn’t we care about the moral upbringing of our children? This is why the government must not stop at merely criminalising such things at parks, it should go further and see to it that the laws are implemented and offenders punished,’’ he said.

According to the Faculty Director, Soar and Heritage, Mr. Sola Adeyiga, location still plays a role in the viability of any business venture. He said this business tenet was understood by many players no matter the legal status of their trade.

Adeyiga added that the primary business of bus terminuses make them attractive to petty traders who may not be able to pay exorbitant fees for lock-up shops in the metropolis. He however, noted that this was not an excuse for government agencies to allow illegality.

Efforts by our correspondent to reach the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, on Monday were not successful as he neither picked his calls nor responded to a text message sent to him.

However, in a telephone interview on Monday, the Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Lagos State chapter, Dr. Matthew Oloko, said he was not aware of such activity at motor parks.

“I don’t know anything about sales of pornographic materials at the parks. This is the first time I will hear such a thing and it has not been reported by any of our unit chairmen,” he said.

The Ghana Football Association has already shortlisted and interviewed three European coaches for the vacant job.

But Keshi wants to gatecrash the process and land his dream job after he was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation this month.
