Nigerians can apply and complete their passport application process online without human contact

0

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, says automation of the passport application process will begin from January 8, 2024, and Nigerians can apply and complete their passport application process online without human contact.

“We are good to go live,” Tunji-Ojo said Monday in Abuja during an inspection of facilities of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) alongside the Comptroller General (CG) of the Service, Wura-Ola Adepoju.

“We are starting the training and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians to have a good feel, a sweet experience based on the Renewed Hope of Mr President.

“We have been able to reduce human contact in passport acquisition to the minimum,” the minister said, adding that the new initiative will enhance the security architecture of the country as well as the comfort and convenience of Nigerians.

Tunji-Ojo said the government wants to bring an end to the era of people bringing fake documents for passport applications, even as he announced that the Service now has document verification officers across all local government areas in the country to scrutinise passport applications in the country.

Tinubu budgets N100 billion for school feeding in 2024

0

President Bola Tinubu says part of the recently signed N28.7 trillion 2024 budget component is N100 billion allocated for school feeding programmes.

He made this statement on Monday while signing the 2024 appropriation bill into law in the State House in Abuja.

Tinubu stated that the provision would serve as a stimulant to encourage school attendance and reduce the problem of out-of-school children.

“One of the priority areas of the bill we just passed is the N100 billion provision for feeding school children. I believe that is a stimulant that will encourage enrollment and address malnutrition among school children.

“I will be meeting with local governments at sub-national levels so that we can collaborate and jointly implement an all-inclusive programme,” he said.

The President also confirmed that the christened “Renewed Hope” budget is anchored on reducing the recurrent expenditure but increasing capital expenditure.

Recall that in December, Tinubu ordered the reintroduction of the school feeding programme and mandated its transfer from the Humanitarian Ministry to the Education Ministry.

The programme, previously halted under former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now fall under the Education Ministry’s purview, aiming to not only provide nutritious meals to pupils but also encourage attendance and enhance learning.

Catholic priest, Ejike Mbaka on Nigerian politicians and elections

0

Catholic priest, Ejike Mbaka, remains steadfast in his commitment to delivering what he refers to as “prophetic messages” on Nigerian politicians and elections, despite facing criticism for doing so.

As the spiritual director of Adoration Ministry Enugu, Mr. Mbaka has gained a reputation for frequently releasing these messages, addressing various political figures and election-related matters in the country.

During his crossover message for the New Year 2024 at the ministry’s grounds in Enugu, Mr. Mbaka expressed that he cannot control the occurrence of these messages and does not boast about them. He stated that they come to him sporadically and have been a part of his life even before he became a Catholic priest, unrelated to his priestly ordination.

Speaking mainly in the Igbo language, the Catholic priest defended himself against accusations of political interference. He emphasized that he merely delivers the messages as they are received from God.

Mr. Mbaka asserted that if he is tasked with delivering a specific message to someone like President Bola Tinubu, no earthly force can prevent him from doing so. He would faithfully convey the message exactly as it was given to him.

Furthermore, he clarified that if he is instructed to inform someone, even a close relative, that they will not win an election, he would first communicate it privately. However, if they refuse to heed his advice, he would publicly declare it to ensure that he is not counted among those who supported a failure. He firmly stated that he could never support a failure.

The Catholic priest emphasized that his ability to prophesy is not derived from his ordination as a priest. He has possessed this gift since his time in seminary school, as attested by his classmates.

It appears that Mr. Mbaka’s comments were directed at his previous scathing remarks about Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate. In June, he had declared that Mr. Obi would not win the presidential election due to being a “stingy man.”

Breaking: Japan Airlines Plane Lands In Flames At Tokyo Airport

A Japan Airlines plane was in flames on the runway of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Tuesday after apparently colliding with a coast guard aircraft, television reports said.

The images on broadcaster NHK showed the plane moving along the runway before an explosion of orange flames burst from beneath and behind it. All 367 passengers on board the Airbus plane were evacuated, broadcaster NHK reported.

The cause of the incident was not immediately clear, but television reports said that the Airbus collided with a Coast Guard aircraft.

Reports said that the plane had just arrived from Sapporo airport on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. A Coast Guard official at Haneda Airport, one of the world’s busiest, said they were “checking details”.

“It’s not clear if there was a collision. But it is certain that our plane is involved,” he told AFP.

The television footage showed flames coming out of windows and the plane’s nose on the ground as rescue workers sprayed it.

There was also burning debris on the runway. More than 70 fire engines were being deployed, NHK reported. Japan has not suffered a serious commercial aviation accident in decades.

Its worst ever was in 1985, when a JAL jumbo jet flying from Tokyo to Osaka crashed in the central Gunma region, killing 520 passengers and crew.

That disaster was one of the world’s deadliest plane crashes involving a single flight.

Tragic incident at Haneda airport as Japan Airlines Airbus A-350, collided a Coast Guard plane.

NRC to begin Lagos-Kaduna-Kano, Port Harcourt-Aba train services in 2024

0

The Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, Fidet Okhiria, has said that the corporation will begin the Port-Harcourt-Aba, Lagos to Kano train services for both passengers and freight in the first quarter of 2024.

Mr Okhiria made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lagos, on Monday.

The MD added that the corporation will also begin six train trips daily on the Standard Gauge Train across board in 2024.

He said that train was meant to be operating 24 hours, but the present situation in the country had reduced the turnaround time.

“We are going to increase number of train trips to six on Lagos-Ibadan, Warri-Itakpe and Abuja-Kaduna, which means the trips will be three times to and three times fro, making six trips in a day.

“The trips will commence before the second quarter of 2024. Right now, they are running four trips — two up and two down across board.

”What is limiting us is the night operations, and that is not the way train should operate. Train is meant to operate at all times. People may like to travel in the evening, but because of the security situation in to the country, we limit ourselves to day time.

“We intend to bring back passenger and freight train from Port-Harcourt to Aba, Lagos to Kano and Kaduna because of the dry ports,” Okhiria said.

He said the NRC had vandalism issue at Warri-Itakpe area in 2023, which was fixed two weeks after the incident took place.

The NRC boss said that it would be difficult for the train tracks to be vandalised when it was occupied.

He said that price of commodities would reduce drastically with the freight train operating across the country.

He said that Dala Dry Port had been asking NRC to come up and bring cargo to them, while Funtua and Kaduna dry ports had also showed interest in freight haulage.

Mr Okhiria said that railway would partner with all the dry ports in the country to reduce time of doing business and increase government revenue.

He said that NRC had employed junior staff from levels four and six, and was awaiting government approval before placing them.

The NRC boss said that they employed the junior staff to enhance their operations.

Mr Okhiria commended government efforts in connecting rail across the country and urged Nigerians to develop interest in rail transportation.

Nigerian Government suspend degree certificates from Benin Republic, Togo

0

The Federal Government has suspended the accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.

This move followed a report detailing how a degree was acquired from a university in Benin Republic in under two months.

“This report lends credence to suspicions that some Nigerians deploy nefarious means and unconscionable methods to get a Degree with the end objective of getting graduate job opportunities for which they are not qualified,” the spokesperson for the Ministry of Education Augustina Obilor-Duru said in a Tuesday statement.

“The Federal Ministry of Education vehemently decries such acts and with effect from 2nd January 2024 is suspending evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo Republics pending the outcome of an investigation that would involve the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria and the two countries, the ministries responsible for Education in the two countries as well the Department of State Security Services (DSSS), and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).”

The ministry is also calling on Nigerians to assist in providing information to help the committee as it seeks lasting solutions to prevent future occurrences.

“FME has been contending with the problem including illegal institutions located abroad or at home preying on unsuspecting, innocent Nigerians and some desperate Nigerians who deliberately patronize such outlets,” the statement added.

“Periodically, warnings have been issued by the Ministry and NUC against the resort to such institutions and in some instances, reports made to security agencies to clamp down on the perpetrators. The ministry will continue to review its strategy to plug any loopholes, processes, and procedures and deal decisively with any conniving officials.”

Goddy Anabor: The journey of a Nigerian billionaire businessman turn taxi driver

Goddy Anabor’s life unfolds as a fascinating narrative of rise and fall.
Once a revered figure in Nigeria’s elite circles, Anabor, former publisher of Hearts Magazine, enjoyed the adoration of musicians and Lagos’ high society for his generosity and affluent lifestyle.

His fortunes, however, took a dramatic turn when allegations of fraudulent activities, particularly involvement in the notorious Yahoo scam (419), surfaced.

Anabor, when confronted about his actions, defended himself with a philosophical stance, asserting that Yahoo was a means of reclaiming what had been stolen from his ancestors. This explanation, though provocative, ignited discussions and debates.

Despite the shadow cast by his controversial wealth accumulation, Anabor invested in diverse ventures. He founded Heart Magazine, a successful romance publication that rivaled Hints Magazine, providing a gateway to sex education for many.

His foray into the color printing business, serving media giants like This Day and Punch newspapers, showcased his versatility. Additionally, he ventured into the then-nascent security industry, leaving a mark as one of its pioneers. His influence extended to the real estate sector, accumulating an impressive portfolio of over 100 buildings in Lagos.

Beyond material riches, Anabor exuded charisma and charm, evidenced by his ability to captivate those around him.

He once disclosed a staggering 3 billion naira deposit in Equity Bank in 1990, equivalent to 70 billion in today’s currency. Foreign ambassadors attended his extravagant parties, highlighting his unmatched status as a Nigerian socialite.
Anabor’s legacy extends beyond his opulent lifestyle; he was recognized for his care and empowerment of women. His support and empowerment endeared him to Nigerian women, especially the influential figures in Lagos society, who now stand as mothers and grandmothers.

NewsWireNGR is republishing an interview he allegedly had two years ago.

You were big then; didn’t you invest your money wisely then?

I invested a lot of my money, but I ran them down because of corruption and mismanagement of the people handling the businesses. When you have a business, employing reliable people and giving them some percentage of the investment or profits to get their commitments is very good. I learned that lesson immensely. I was putting my wife and my family they ran the business down. My wife, Anthonia, even shared money with people on purchases and supplies. My workers were building houses without letting me know about the money they were making from the companies.

How did you meet Anthonia?

I met her at a Police Station when I had a problem. She was a Sergeant then, a wonderful woman. She was working with Dan Baba then and trying to assist me.

Was she your first wife?

No, my first wife is an Ijebu woman called Toyin, and she is still alive. I used to call her Toyin Tomato; she was always with Kolington, Tayelolu, and the like.

Why did you part with her?

I parted with her because she likes parties a lot.

But you were also going to parties then?

I went to parties, but I could not leave my family and go to parties. She used to leave our little son and go to parties. She had three children for me. My first daughter, Bose, is a Ph.D. holder in London. I have another one who is a doctor, and Tunde, who is in America.

Are they aware of your situation?

Yes. They’ve tried.

I knew you had properties on Isaac John and Alabi Crescent in Ikeja; what happened to them?

They took advantage of me because they knew I needed money. I was offered N80m by a man called Basorun A.K for a house of about N300m. He has been in jail for nearly ten years now because he was a drug dealer.

What about your Guest House on Joel Ogunnaike, GRA, Ikeja?

I rented it and gave it to Shina Eddo, who also rented it from the family that owns it. Shina is a very good person to me.

What happened to your fleet of cars because you had a penchant for them?

I had over 50 cars like Bentley, Rolls Royce, and others. I usually bought cars that were newly manufactured. Household enemies are the problems of my life. God has made me see that those I trusted don’t care about me.

Why do you think everyone neglected you?

It’s corruption and distrust. I gave at least 60 percent of all I had to people. I’m so happy on the street because people like Ade Balogun take care of me.

What about Dare Babs; who was he to you?

He was my driver. I brought him from Abeokuta to Lagos while working at the Breweries. We had a problem because of some little money of $5m, which Kenny stole, though we’ve settled it. He’s a very good person, but I last heard from him a few years ago.

What’s your relationship with Oghadiome?

He is my village brother, my compound brother from Fuga in Edo State. The late Admiral Akhigbe was the governor of Lagos State then; he was the one who made Oghadiome become a deputy to Lucky Igbinedion of Edo State. When he became Jonathan’s chief of staff, I went to Abuja to look for him.

I was thinking he would call me for something important because when his mother died, I was there. Even when they were building the secretariat in Fugar, I was the one who contributed the most, and they named a hall there after me: Godwin Anabor Hall. Today, none of them recognizes me, and it’s hilarious.

Do you think what is happening to you is Karma because you used to ‘obtain’ people then?

In the Bible, God says,” If you believe him, he will give you joy. And for those who don’t believe him, he will give them the power to acquire, but those who believe in Him will take it from you.” God gave me money; I did not obtain it; it just came. If I got it, they would have arrested me. I’ve never been on trial or jailed for any offense. I don’t have such a record.

For your information, I know I will come back again; that’s why I’m speaking like this. I will return because you’re bound to go up and down seven times and still have the grace. I believe in God.

What is your greatest joy in life?

My joy is that I did not die and give people the opportunity to say good things about me when I’m gone. I’m alive to see how people are treating me when I don’t have. People I taught how to make money then and who are now rich don’t want to touch me.

Ambassadors of foreign countries used to attend your parties; what was your connection with them?

It’s because I’m honest. If you’re real, people will come to you.

Tell me about your background; where are you from?

I’m from Fugar, Auchi, in Edo state, but I was born in Kano and grew up in Osogbo.

What about Ade Bendel? I learned he is your friend.

He is like my brother because he is from Owan in Edo State; I met him in Lagos. I heard that he had some problems and he’s in prison; that’s all I know about him so far.

If you come back again, what lessons have you learned in life?

I want people to know that the friend you have now is not your best friend; in fact, your household enemy is your family. It’s just you and God. Always watch your back.

Who is left with you now?

It’s God, and He is working because I’m living and enjoying. I still believe in Philippians 4:13. ‘I can do everything through Him who strengthens me.’

There was a report that you are now driving a cab; is that true?

People are just writing whatever they like. A lot of people want to give me cars and other things. When God has blessed you, he has blessed you. Did you not see my driver? Yes, he drives me in a Toyota called Pencil Light, but I’m not the one driving or doing kabukabu with it. I’ve learned to live with my condition after all; I’m alive to see it all.

What is your greatest prayer to God now?

My prayer can be found in Psalm 1, which says, ‘Blessed is the man who does not walk in the midst of the wicked.’ He says he will bless them and make them like trees planted by the riverside. That’s why I prayed that I would become a rich man. Forget about gossip.

How old are you, chief?

I’m 55, and I was born on February 19.

Where is Anthonia and your children now?

They’re in London.

Tell me your last word.

My last word is that everybody should watch their back because there are household enemies.

Rivers Crisis: Fubara replaces Wike kinsman with ally, Edison, as Chief of Staff

0

Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has appointed the immediate-past Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie, as his new Chief of Staff.

Ehie, who is a strong ally of Fubara, replaces the Chief of Staff, Hon. Chidi Amadi, who is a kinsman to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

The immediate-past speaker had on Sunday night resigned his position as both Speaker and member representing Ahoada-East Constituency 2 in the Rivers State House of Assembly, sparking questions about his political move.

His notice of resignation was contained in a letter dated 29th December 2023 and addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

“This is to formally notify you of my voluntary resignation as Speaker and Member of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly representing Ahoada East Constituency II with effect from the date of this letter.

“I wish to appreciate my colleagues and the people of my constituency for the rare opportunity to serve and hope to continue to give my utmost best in service to Rivers State subsequently,” the letter read.

Recall that the resolution signed by parties during the peace meeting held at the instance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu included the recognition of Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule as Speaker of the House. However, there was no clause mandating Ehie to vacate his seat as a member of the House.

Mining License: Era of carting away Nigeria’s resources over, FG declares

0

The Minister of  Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, says more revocation of mining license is in the offing for other categories of defaulters in 2024.

Alake issued the warning in his New Year Goodwill Message to Nigerians in Lagos on Monday.

The Federal Government had revoked 1,633 mining licenses of those that defaulted in the payment of annual service fees in 2023.

The minster said the Federal Government was prioritising value addition for prospective investors in the mining sector, adding that the era of carting away their resource was over.

“The era of just carting away our resources is over. We want to see practical plans to develop these raw materials into finished products or plans to add value to host communities before we even license new operators.

“This is pertinent, so that the mining sector can lead the way in industrialization, create massive jobs for our teeming young population, and contribute substantially to economic development in the new year.

“Our plans to tackle the menace of insecurity in mining areas alongside the activities of illegal miners through a rejigged security architecture is well on course.

“In a short while, we will see the result of months of engagement with heads of security agencies, as we are poised to rout those plundering Nigeria’s mineral resources,” he said.

The minster said the plans would make the mining sector to experience a major leap in 2024 toward contributing to  increased Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He said this was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of diversifying the economy through renewed focus through the solid minerals, asserting that reforms in the sector would yield tremendous results in the new year.

According to him, on our part in the solid minerals development ministry, we will be consolidating on reforms that commenced with our ambitious seven-point agenda, on assumption of office, four months ago.

Alake assured Nigerians that an efficient governance structure that would transform the opaque nature of the mining sector would crystallise this year.
