Happy New Year: Bishop Oyedepo’s 2024 prophetic declarations

0

Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder and General Overseer of Living Faith Church aka Winners’ Chapel, has released prophetic declarations for 2024.

The highly respected cleric issued them during the church’s crossover service at Canaanland in Ogun State.

Oyedepo noted that the New Year would be a year of fearful favour.

His prophecies were majorly important for members of his church, and he did not speak much about what might happen in Nigeria and around the world.

He declared that it will be the “Isaac-order of year” and God will bring every Winner from obscurity into the limelight.

He said: “It shall mark the end of misfortune in your life!

“It shall be your Isaac-order of year; your year of enviable turnaround!

“It shall be your year of spiritual breakthrough that will set the pace for other breakthroughs in your life!

“It shall be your year of unchecked enlargement!

“You shall be satisfied with favour and fulfilled with the blessing of the Lord all through 2024!

“Every Winner that will care to maintain a walk with God shall dip his foot in oil!

“It shall be your year of supernatural flight!

“You will be jumping levels all through 2024!

“God is bringing every Winner from the street corner to the limelight!

“It shall be your year of favour after the order of Mary!

“Favour will locate you to make the impossible happen in your life!

“You will never know setbacks in your journey all through 2024!”

TEXT OF PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU’S NEW YEAR ADDRESS TO THE NATION

Dear Compatriots,

It gives me immense joy to welcome each and everyone of you – young and old- to this brand new year 2024. We must lift up our hands to Almighty God, in gratitude, for His grace and benevolence to our country and our lives in the year 2023 that has just gone by.

Though the past year was a very challenging one, it was eventful in so many ways. For our country, it was a transition year that saw a peaceful, orderly and successful transfer of power from one administration to another, marking yet another remarkable step in our 24 years of unbroken democracy.

It was a year, you the gracious people of this blessed nation, entrusted your faith in me with a clear mandate to make our country better, to revamp our economy, restore security within our borders, revitalise our floundering industrial sector, boost agricultural production, increase national productivity and set our country on an irreversible path towards national greatness that we and future generations will forever be proud of.

The task of building a better nation and making sure we have a Nigeria society that cares for all her citizens is the reason I ran to become your President. It was the core of my Renewed Hope campaign message on the basis of which you voted me as President.

Everything I have done in office, every decision I have taken and every trip I have undertaken outside the shores of our land, since I assumed office on 29 May 2023, have been done in the best interest of our country.

Over the past seven months of our administration, I have taken some difficult and yet necessary decisions to save our country from fiscal catastrophe. One of those decisions was the removal of fuel subsidy which had become an unsustainable financial burden on our country for more than four decades. Another was the removal of the chokehold of few people on our foreign exchange system that benefited only the rich and the most powerful among us. Without doubt, these two decisions brought some discomfort to individuals, families and businesses.

I am well aware that for some time now the conversations and debates have centred on the rising cost of living, high inflation which is now above 28% and the unacceptable high under-employment rate.

From the boardrooms at Broad Street in Lagos to the main-streets of Kano and Nembe Creeks in Bayelsa, I hear the groans of Nigerians who work hard every day to provide for themselves and their families.

I am not oblivious to the expressed and sometimes unexpressed frustrations of my fellow citizens. I know for a fact that some of our compatriots are even asking if this is how our administration wants to renew their h ope.

Dear Compatriots, take this from me: the time may be rough and tough, however, our spirit must remain unbowed because tough times never last. We are made for this period, never to flinch, never to falter. The socio-economic challenges of today should energize and rekindle our love and faith in the promise of Nigeria. Our current circumstances should make us resolve to work better for the good of our beloved nation. Our situation should make us resolve that this new year 2024, each and everyone of us will commit to be better citizens.

Silently, we have worked to free captives from abductors. While we can’t beat our chest yet that we had solved all the security problems, we are working hard to ensure that we all have peace of mind in our homes, places of work and on the roads.

Having laid the groundwork of our economic recovery plans within the last seven months of 2023, we are now poised to accelerate the pace of our service delivery across sectors.

Just this past December during COP28 in Dubai, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and I agreed and committed to a new deal to speed up the delivery of the Siemens Energy power project that will ultimately deliver reliable supply of electricity to our homes and businesses under the Presidential Power Initiative which began in 2018.

Other power installation projects to strengthen the reliability of our transmission lines and optimise the integrity of our National grid are ongoing across the country.

My administration recognises that no meaningful economic transformation can happen without steady electricity supply. In 2024, we are moving a step further in our quest to restart local refining of petroleum products with Port Harcourt Refinery, and the Dangote Refinery which shall fully come on stream.

To ensure constant food supply, security and affordability, we will step up our plan to cultivate 500,000 hectares of farmlands across the country to grow maize, rice, wheat, millet and other staple crops. We launched the dry season farming with 120,000 hectares of land in Jigawa State last November under our National Wheat Development Programme.

In this new year, we will race against time to ensure all the fiscal and tax policies reforms we need to put in place are codified and simplified to ensure the business environment does not destroy value. On every foreign trip I have embarked on, my message to investors and other business people has been the same. Nigeria is ready and open for business.

I will fight every obstacle that impedes business competitiveness in Nigeria and I will not hesitate to remove any clog hindering our path to making Nigeria a destination of choice for local and foreign investments.

In my 2024 Budget presentation to the National Assembly, I listed my administration’s 8 priority areas to include national defence and internal security, job creation, macro-economic stability, investment environment optimization, human capital development, poverty reduction and social security. Because we take our development agenda very seriously, our 2024 budget reflects the premium we placed on achieving our governance objectives.

We will work diligently to make sure every Nigerian feels the impact of their government. The economic aspirations and the material well-being of the poor, the most vulnerable and the working people shall not be neglected. It is in this spirit that we are going to implement a new national living wage for our industrious workers this new year. It is not only good economics to do this, it is also a morally and politically correct thing to do.

I took an oath to serve this country and give my best at all times. Like I said in the past, no excuse for poor performance from any of my appointees will be good enough.

It is the reason I put in place a Policy Coordination, Evaluation, Monitoring and Delivery Unit in the Presidency to make sure that governance output improves the living condition of our people.

We have set the parameters for evaluation. Within the first quarter of this new year, Ministers and Heads of Agencies with a future in this administration that I lead will continue to show themselves.

Fellow Nigerians, my major ambition in government as a Senator in the aborted Third Republic, as Governor of Lagos State for eight years and now as the President of this blessed country is to build a fair and equitable society and close the widening inequality. While I believe the rich should enjoy their legitimately-earned wealth, our minimum bargain must be that, any Nigerian that works hard and diligent enough will have a chance to get ahead in life. I must add that because God didn’t create us with equal talents and strengths, I can not guarantee that we will have equal outcomes when we work hard. But my government, in this new year 2024 and beyond, will work to give every Nigerian equal opportunity to strive and to thrive.

For the new year to yield all its good benefits to us as individuals and collectively as a people we must be prepared to play our part. The job of building a prosperous nation is not the job of the President, Governors, Ministers, Lawmakers and government officials alone. Our destinies are connected as members of this household of Nigeria. Our language, creed, ethnicity and religious beliefs even when they are not same should never make us work at cross purposes.

In this new year, let us resolve that as joint-heirs to the Nigerian Commonwealth, we will work for the peace, progress and stability of our country. I extend this call to my political opponents in the last election. Election is over. It’s time for all of us to work together for the sake of our country.

We must let the light each of us carries – men and women, young and old – shine bright and brighter to illuminate our path to a glorious dawn.

I wish all of us a happy and prosperous year 2024.

May God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR

Lagos government not responsible for demolition at Computer Village — Commissioner

0

The Lagos State Government says it has nothing to do with the demolition at Computer Village in Ikeja.

The demolished structure is owned by the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), which ordered its demolition.

The State government in a Press Statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, adds that the story is the figment of the imagination of the peddlers of the Story.

The State Government says those circulating the fake news that Lagos State Government is demolishing Computer Village are opportunistic ethnic chauvinists who will always relish in vacuous propaganda that can fuel their fiendish mission; they will always fail in dividing Lagosians.

The State Government according to him will continue to protect the rights of every Lagos resident irrespective of any affiliations urging residents of the State to continue their normal businesses without let or hindrance.

World population increases by 75 million in 2023

0

The world population grew by 75 million people over the past year and on New Year’s Day it will stand at more than 8 billion people, according to figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday.

The worldwide growth rate in the past year was just under 1%. At the start of 2024, 4.3 births and two deaths are expected worldwide every second, according to the Census Bureau figures.

The growth rate for the United States in the past year was 0.53%, about half the worldwide figure. The U.S. added 1.7 million people and will have a population on New Year’s Day of 335.8 million people.

If the current pace continues through the end of the decade, the 2020s could be the slowest-growing decade in U.S. history, yielding a growth rate of less than 4% over the 10-year-period from 2020 to 2030, said William Frey, a demographer at The Brookings Institution.

FG granted 34 companies tax-holiday in 2023

0

The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) said it had granted three years of tax exemption to 34 companies in 2023.

Mrs Lovina Kayode, Head of Incentives Administration, NIPC, told newsmen in Abuja that the exemption was to promote the company’s investments drive towards developing the nation’s economy.

“This tax exemption known as Pioneer Status Incentives (PSI) is executed under the Investors Relations Department of the NIPC and allows a company three years of not paying Corporate Income Tax,” she said.

According to her, not all companies are granted incentives owing to the stringent procedures followed by the commission on waiver awards.

Earlier reports had put the average annual tax waiver figure at about N5tn. Companies including Dangote Sinotrucks West Africa Limited, Lafarge Africa Plc, Honeywell Flour Mills Nigeria Plc, Jigawa Rice Limited, and Stallion Motors Limited, among others had benefited from tax waivers from pioneer status incentives.

While acknowledging the high amount of revenue lost to waivers granted every year, Kayode said what mattered was the bigger picture, amount of forex brought into the country.

“The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and our parent ministry, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, is also part of this process to ensure that right investors get this incentive.

“So far 34 applications have been approved, and one of the things we intend to do was to ensure that we were not just giving incentives to undeserving companies.

“Meanwhile, there is already a notion that Nigeria gives out too many waivers, incentives, and concessions.

“However, tax expenditure means what the government has lost by granting PSI, was just a small amount compared to the gains made by granting these incentives to qualified companies.”

She revealed the plans by the commission to publish impact assessment reports on the effectiveness of the pioneer status report on job creation and other economic activities to promote investments.

“On impact, that is one thing NIPC is planning on, next year, it is one of our biggest tasks to do an impact assessment.

“These incentives we gave out, how have they impacted the country in terms of job creation and what kind of import substitution has come about because we granted these incentives.

“And how much will the government gain after the three years of them (the companies defaulting paying these taxes?) ”

The Head, Policy and Advocacy of the commission, Mr. Salami Abayomi, expressed displeasure at the rate at which foreign companies/investors were leaving the country.

According to him, some challenges are responsible for this development, but the commission was working in collaboration with relevant agencies to address the issue.

He expressed optimism that by 2024, the efforts of the agencies in that regard would yield positive results.

Earlier, NIPC’s Executive Secretary, Aisha Rimi, reiterated the commission’s commitment to facilitate and assist investors to gain inroad into the country.

Man arrested for allegedly printing, distributing fake police ID cards

0

The Police in Lagos State have arrested a man, who allegedly paraded himself as a Police officer before commercial motorcyclists, whom he allegedly defrauded the sum of N670,000.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to the newsmen on Sunday.

Hundeyin said that the suspect was arrested after information about his activities was received for allegedly printing fake Police ID Card and issued same to some motorcyclists, who paid him between N50,000 and N70,000.

He said that the purpose of issuing them the card was to serve as ‘Police errand boys’, should they be stopped at any security check point, particularly Police check point.

“It is a case of conspiracy, impersonation, obtaining money under false pretense and stealing.

“We got information on Dec. 12 against one Michael Utsu and others now at large.

“The suspect, in Oct. 25, presented himself to be a police officer attached to Zone 2 Headquarters, Onikan Lagos and was collecting passport photographs from commercial motorcyclists.

“He promised to print them a police plastic identity card meant for errand boys to police, using different police formations for the ID card issued to the motorcyclists, collecting between N50,000 and N70,000 on each id card issued,” he said.

The image maker further said that the suspect confessed to the crimes, stressing that the cards printed were given to motorcyclists at Ojo, Okokomaiko and Ajangbadi axis of Lagos and collected the amount from the victims.

Hundeyin said that the suspect would be charged to court on completion of the investigation.

Child Marriage: Bayelsa government summons 4-year-old girl’s parents, 54 years old groom

0

The Bayelsa Government has invited parents of a four-year-old girl and the 54-year-old man allegedly involved in a marriage in Akeddei community in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.

The Bayelsa Government’s in a statement made available to newsmen in Yenagoa on Saturday was jointly signed by Dr. Dise Ogbise-Goddy, Chairman, Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT) Bayelsa and Mr Paniebi Jacob, Director, Child Development in the  Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Social Development.

The state government, which frowned at the development, also expressed concern over the “illegal marriage” based on tradition and customs, saying it was repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Women, Children Affairs and Social Development and GRIT have acknowledged the receipt of a formal complaint from a child rights advocacy group, DO Foundation, on the controversial marriage.

Jacob, Ogbise-Goddy  and the state Human Rights Commission, said the traditional ruler of Akeddei community honoured the government’s invitation and promised to produce the child, her parents, the groom, the youth leader and the chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC).

The statement noted that the Bayelsa Government did not support child marriage under any guise.

“That is why the state government did not hesitate to assent to the  passage of the  Bayelsa State Child Rights Law.

“We are taking steps to rescue the child from all the key actors in relation to this illegal ceremony that they tagged a ‘mere spiritual’ affair.

“The law is clear on issues of tradition and customs that are repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience  and working with the Bayelsa State Police Command, we shall ensure incidents like this do not occur in the state again.

“On behalf of the governor of Bayelsa State, we express our gratitude to all the non-governmental organisations, including FIDA and DO Foundation, that have risen to the rescue of this innocent child.

“Bayelsa State is children-friendly and this case will be pursued to a logical conclusion.”

NewsWireNGR had earlier reported that the alleged marriage involving  the man, simply identified as Elder Akpos, was at the instance of the girl’s parents.

According to a source, who pleaded anonymity for fear of penalty for desecrating traditions, the parents of the girl claim that the 54-year-old man was her husband in their previous life.

According to the community source, the girl claimed that the man was her husband who died mysteriously in their previous life.

The toddler has narrated that over the years, she has been moving from place to place, to be given birth to by different parents, searching for her former husband.

The source said: “The little bride said if she was not allowed to marry her husband, she would have no other business in Akeddei community, and that she was going to die peacefully and go her way.

“In order to avoid losing the girl to death, the people of Akeddei decided to organise a glamorous wedding ceremony to mark the union of the two previous life lovers.”

Details of Plateau governor’s meeting with Tinubu in Lagos — Media aide

0

Mr Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs (DOPPA) to Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, has clarified the reason for the visit of the governor to President Bola Tinubu.

Bere told newsmen on Saturday in Jos that the governor’s visit on Monday in Lagos was to brief the president on the security situation in the state.

Bere was reacting to reports making the rounds in some social media handles that the governor went to Lagos to make merry while the state was under attack.

The media aide explained that the visit was a sincere effort towards tackling the insecurity currently confronting the state.

The Plateau state governor was in Lagos on Christmas day along with other members of the Nigeria Governors Forum.

Vice President Kashim Shettima was also at the meeting with the governors from Kwara, Benue, Katsina, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, Rivers, Lagos and Imo among others.

”The purpose of the visit was to apprise the President of the escalating security challenges in the state and to seek prompt intervention from the Federal Government.

”The visit was not for revelry but a sincere effort to draw attention to the security crisis, distinct from past situations.

”Prior to the Lagos visit, the governor had granted interview on Channels and Arise Televisions, and declared his intention of meeting with the President to solicit support over the renewed security challenges in the state.

”He had earlier visited Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) which had been ravaged by severe attacks. Following this, he held a meeting with the Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) and issued a directive to secure affected communities,” he said.

Bere, who expressed dismay at criticisms on social media, said that the governor had proactively responded to the Christmas eve attacks in Bokko and Barkin-Ladi LGAs.

”The decision to meet with Mr. President was aimed at briefing him on the renewed violence for appropriate action.

”His discussions with the President and other governors yielded positive results, and consequently, Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and other Security Chiefs were dispatched to Plateau to assess the security situation

”Following the briefing, the President ordered security personnel to apprehend the perpetrators and mobilised relief materials for surviving victims,” he said.

Bere affirmed Mutfwang-led administration’s commitment toward prioritising the security of lives and property in the state, insisting that the people remain the governor’s top priority.

Canada-based Nigerian lawyer, Ayokunle Odekunle, dies after battle with gastric cancer

0

A Canada-based Nigerian legal practitioner, Ayokunle Odekunle, has died years after battling gastric cancer.

Odekunle, who is a controversial social commentator on the Nigerian Twitter platform with username @oddy4real migrated to Edmonton, Canada in 2020, a time when it was too late for physicians to contain his ailment.

Even though he has a strong interest in writing, Odekunle studied law at the University of Ibadan, class of 2011, and was called to the Nigerian bar.

Last summer, he was also called to the bar in Alberta, Canada, a feat he attained even after learning his days were numbered.

In a 2009 letter to his unborn child, Mr Odekunle lamented his passion for writing, but said his parents’ interest in law persuaded him to enrol to become a lawyer at UI, which he described as “a once great university.”

“Writing was my forte I told daddy but daddy felt otherwise,” he said, disclosing a nostalgia about how he was born to a middle-class family before fortunes depreciated rapidly for his father, who was a lawyer, when he was in high school.

The letter, reposted here in 2013, also showed Mr Odekunle’s self-awareness of how his detractors may characterise him.

“While some would say I am actually playful and brilliant, others insist I am cocky, proud and arrogant,” he said. “While some love what I do, others see nothing good in it.”

Reacting to Odekunle’s death, the Lawmaker Representing Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency, Oloye Akin Alabi, confirmed that he (Ayodele Odekunle) has been battling cancer for years.

“You fought really hard to beat the cancer @oddy4real. I was rooting for you. I take solace in the fact that you are free of pain. For years, you battled it. Kept on with your bar exams and law career while being a husband and a father. You didn’t seek for pity. Na man you be. RIP”.

Also consoling Odekunle family, former governor of Delta state and the 2023 vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ifeanyi Okowa, described the deceased as “a rare young man.

“The insightfulness of his tweets, the passion of his support for our party and myself, and the intentionality of his actions that he shared with us online, showed that he was a young man that was already doing great things and was destined to do even more.

“Sadly, that young, brilliant and promising life has been cut short by cancer. This is why, it is with great sadness, that my family and I send our heartfelt condolences to Oddy’s wife Halimah, their two beautiful children, and the PDP family.

“We pray that the Almighty God grants the family that he has left behind peace at this difficult time.

“He left behind his wife and two children, who live in Canada.”
