PDP Governors want Buhari to implement restructuring, state policing

0

Governors under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have charged President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the creation of state policing, citing it as the solution to insecurity plaguing the country.

The Governors led by the Chairman of PDP Governor’s Forum, Sokoto State’s, Aminu Tambuwal were hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State at the International Institute For Tropical Agriculture on Monday.

In a communique issued and made available to NewsWireNGR, after the meeting, the governors stated that the meeting was to proffer solution to the worsening security situation and collapsing economy in the country.

The Governors also called for the restructuring of the country and showed their support for the recent ban on open grazing in the southern region.

The communique read, “The meeting called on Mr. President as the Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria and Commander in Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces to immediately send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly to amend the Nigerian Constitution to devolve more powers to the states with respect to security arrangements culminating in some form of state policing and the general security architecture.

“In the interim, Mr. President should summon an immediate meeting of the Nigerian Police Council, which comprises Mr. President and all state governors and other critical stakeholders to evolve and implement strategies to combat the present threats to our union, especially with respect to policing.

“The meeting agreed that the police force still remains the appropriate institution to secure our democracy and should not be subjected to personal attacks. The welfare, training, equipment, funding of all security agencies should be given priority.

“The meeting supports the earlier position taken by the Nigeria Governors Forum, Northern Governors Forum and recently by the Southern Governors Forum to adopt ranching as the most viable solution to the herders/farmers clashes in Nigeria; the restructuring of the Nigerian federation to devolve more powers and functions to the States, and reform of various civil institutions to achieve efficiency and equity for all sections of Nigeria.

“The meeting enjoins all Nigerians to work together to achieve peace and harmony with one another, devoid of discrimination based on ethnicity, religion, and other cleavages.

“To this end, the meeting called on the incompetent and rudderless APC Government to take bold and deliberate steps to de-escalate and lower tensions in our country, and concentrate on projects and policies that will enhance and promote national unity and cohesion.”

The governors also re-iterated their earlier call on the National Assembly to expedite action on the passage of the Electoral Act that would ensure a free and fair election, including provisions for electronic accreditation and electronic transmission of votes.”

The Governors in attendance were Aminu Waziri Tambuwal ( Sokoto State), Udom Emmanuel ( Akwa Ibom State), Douye Diri (Bayelsa State), Samuel Ortom (Benue State), Ifeanyi Okowa Delta State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu State), Nyesom Wike (Rivers State), Seyi Makinde (Oyo State), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa State), and Godwin Obaseki (Edo State).

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State was also there while Deputy Governor Mahdi Mohd represented his boss Bello Matawalle.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), had vowed not to retreat or surrender on the strike they began in Kaduna as the union commenced a five-day warning strike shutting down electricity supply, government schools and offices, banks, airport, train station.

The National President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba stated while addressing the gathering of various Labour unions at the Congress’ building in Kaduna.

Wabba explained that, they were aware that the first batch of the sacked workers from all the Local government councils of Kaduna was 5,000 while the second batch was 2000.

“We are also aware that in the Primary Health Care Development Agency, 1700 workers were sacked, there was exorbitant increment of tuition fees, among other uncalled actions in Ministries and Agencies in the State.

According to him, almost all the sacked workers from the various Ministries and Agencies of the State had converged at the NLC secretariats to confirm their sack.

The President assured members that the strike  would be fully complied with.

“Fuel stations, hospitals, banks, railway, airport, among others has been closed because we must take our destiny with our own hands if the situation in Kaduna and Nigeria at large cannot change”, he stressed.

“We cannot accept the bitter pills, we are here in Kaduna today because the labour law in Nigeria says before you can declare redundancy, labour shall be consulted and the Governor never did”.

According to Wabba, “the Governor said he had consulted NULGE and they denied it as they are here with us now, we want to tell the World that a lot of information are false”.

He said the union has the right to protest peacefully without being intimidated or harassed, saying, the Governor should go after criminals, especially kidnappers and bandits terrorizing the state not workers who are earning their legitimate means.

The patients appealed to government to  end the strike actions by health workers who made it difficult for patients to survive.

On April 6, 2021, over 4000 staff across 23 local governments received their disengagement letters.

Breaking: Nigeria’s Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo talks 2023 presidential race

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has stated that he had not declared any interest whatsoever in the 2023 presidential race but is rather focused on working as VP to address compelling issues in the country.

The Office of the Vice-President in a release on Monday was reacting to a website, www.supportosinbajo.ng that started trending, which called on Nigerians to join a volunteer group mobilising support for Osinbajo ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

The VP’s office in the statement by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, said Osinbajo had nothing to do with the group or the website, while asking Nigerians to desist from such permutations.

The VP office said, “The attention of the Office of the Vice President has been drawn to a website: supportosinbajo.ng that is calling on Nigerians to join a volunteer group mobilizing support for Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

“Details of this website and the solicitation of the group are currently trending on WhatsApp with a suggestion that Prof. Osinbajo has “quietly” declared interest in the 2023 election.

“The Office of the Vice President is not in any way connected to this website or the group behind it and considers such an enterprise an unnecessary distraction. Prof. Osinbajo has not declared any interest whatsoever in the 2023 election, but he is rather focused on working in his capacity as Vice President in the current administration to address all the compelling issues in the country and concerns of Nigerians, including finding effective and lasting solutions to the security challenges.

“Therefore, we ask that people desist from such unhelpful permutations while we all deal together with the challenges confronting us as Nigerians, and resolve them for the benefit of our people, peace, and prosperity in the land.”

‘We have started the process to impeach Senate President Ahmed Lawan’- Lawmaker

A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives Hon. Sergius Ogun says the process that will ensure the country’s Senate President, Ahmad Lawan is impeached has started.

The lawmaker representing Esan North-East/Esan South-East Federal Constituency, said this on Monday while being interviewed on Arise News Television.

According to Ogun, the move to impeach the senate president was because of his disagreement with the 17 southern governors in their call to restructure Nigeria.

The House of Rep member said Lawan’s criticism of only a section of the governors of the country showed that the number three citizen, Ahmad Lawan is not fit to occupy the position of the senate president.

“We don’t need people that express their bias in that way and manner. This number three figure they call them have a way of deceiving them. How can a leader at a time like this, who should be bringing people together be speaking like that? We don’t need people like that. I think he should go and i’m sure the process has started”. he said.

Recall that Senate President Ahmed Lawan had warned elected officials, including state governors against calling for the restructuring of the country.

Lawan who gave the warning in Abuja last week Thursday, while speaking to journalists, said he was not against those calling for restructuring but elected officials must not be among those advocating for such calls.

Kaduna Strike: ‘El-Rufai never believes he is wrong but we will compel him’ – NLC

0

The Nigerian Labour Congress has revealed that it is engaging in the five-day warning strike to not just protest against the Kaduna State government’s decision to disengage thousands of civil servants in the state but to also correct the state Governor, Nasi El-Rufai for anti-people policies.

The labour union’s Deputy President, Amechi Asugwuni stated this on Monday morning in an interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily monitored by NewsWireNGR.

Mr Asugwuni cited El-Rufai’s involvement in the bill seeking to remove minimum wage from the legislative jurisdiction as one of the ways the governor had distanced himself from the welfare of the ordinary people.

Hence, the protest is not just to prevent the disengagement of staff but to also reinforce a peoples-first mentality in the state and for the whole Nigerians to be aware of what is happening in the state.

“This is not the first time this Governor is engaging in this form of act. Don’t forget that the recent resistent bill, the removal of minimum wage from the legislative means was also sponsored by this Governor,” the labour leader said.

“So it is not for him to accept, it is for us to resist him to accept because he has never believed that he is wrong and such persons you don’t take his words but you just do what is lawful until the law compel him to be humble.

“He has continued to advocate these evil practices against Nigerians here and if we don’t come out this way Nigerians may not know what is happening.”

The strike which has kicked-off on Monday has grounded activities in the state and on Sunday, there was blackout in the state in compliance with the strike. The blackout is expected to continue throughout the strike action.

This grounded state has affected the quality of lives in the state but Asugwuni said that despite being open for dialogue, the strike continues because of its intended purpose.

“As for engagement, we are hoping to dialogue, we are waiting on any genuine call. If there is an official communication to NLC, we will avail ourselves.

“But until that is done, this action continues. Even in the midst of engagement, I do not think there is anything that will stop this action because the action is not meat to threaten but to correct the abnormality.”

Atiku ask Governors to embrace unity and solve Nigeria’s insecurity crisis

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has asked the 36 governors of the country to host a national unity summit to proffer solutions to the insecurity challenges facing the country.

Speaking in a statement on Sunday, Atiku urged the Governors to ignore the presidency and take charge of the situation.

This summit he said, should bypass party lines, religion, ethnicity and other divides between the Governors.

He said: “Forget about your party. Forget about your tribe. Respect your religion and allow it to bring out the better part of you. Meet together. Talk together. Come up with the solutions to all our collective challenges.

“And then go back to your states, and consult with your federal and state legislators, with a view to getting them to work with their colleagues to implement the solutions you came up with.

“To keep waiting for this Federal Government to take the lead and effect the changes that Nigeria needs to stop drifting, is to keep waiting for Godot. And that is a luxury we cannot afford.”

Atiku who is also a presidential-aspirant warned that Nigeria is drifting, stressing that it is not only drifting politically and economically, but also, the people are drifting apart from one another.

Noting that the drift is no longer between the North and the South, but between good and bad, the former vice president charged: “Those who are good should come together to show those who are bad that we are in the overwhelming majority.

“I have repeatedly said that I am a Nigerian. Full stop. That is my identity. And now more than ever, we must ask ourselves this question: what does it mean to be a Nigerian?

“A Nigerian is one who is committed to the idea of the indivisibility of Nigeria and who is invested in respecting, even if you disagree with, the differences that exist within this nation space, and respecting the right of others to coexist with you irrespective of religious, regional or ethnic differences.

“That is what being a Nigerian means to me. And that is why I believe that all those who believe in Nigeria should stand up to be counted.

“It is unNigerian to terrorise fellow citizens, noting that up until about a decade ago, the nation did not have this division. According to him, it is unNigerian to abduct people.

He described abduction as a new menace that has low historical precedence in Nigeria.

“The truth is that if at a national level, we address these unNigerian tendencies immediately and dispassionately, we would not have Nigerians congregating at a regional or sub-regional level to address these issues.

“What our present challenges therefore call for is not fragmentation but concentration. We must concentrate and focus our national willpower and resolve towards fighting these unNigerian tendencies”, he added.

Atiku said there was wisdom in last week’s meeting of the 17 Southern governors in Asaba where they announced a ban on open grazing of cattle and trumpeted a call for restructuring.

He, however, canvassed unity among the various ethnic groups in the country, saying, “no matter how much you try to clap with one hand, the vibrations will not be the same as when you clap with two hands”

Quoting Albert Einstein, he said: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them. The problems were created by those with a regional mindset, and will not be solved by those with a similar mindset.

He observed that for too long, Nigerians have erroneously thought that the power to make effective changes was vested in Aso Rock.

Atiku said: “But without the states, nobody can get to Aso Rock. That is why for anyone to emerge as President of Nigeria, he or she must secure enough votes in two-thirds of the states that make up the Nigerian federation”

“We cannot afford it because, according to the Global Terror Index, our beloved nation is now the third most terrorised nation on Earth. We are featuring prominently on the Failed States Index, and the symbols of our nation, our currency, our passport, and our international standing are fast losing value”.

Quoting Einstein again, Atiku said: “Those who have the privilege to know have the duty to act. It’s obvious that the governors know that all is not well with Nigeria.

“That is why they have been meeting. At regional and sub regional levels. That knowledge comes with a duty to act, and to act together. Because if we do not act together, then the alternative is that we fall asunder. And God forbid that should ever be our fate.

“We must be mindful of the fact that one in four Africans is a Nigerian. And one in every seven black people on earth is Nigerian. Therefore, being so centrally placed by God, it ought to be clear to us that it is our duty to be a beacon of light to the black world.

“If we succeed as a nation, our successes will resonate beyond our borders. It will give hope to the Black Diaspora and increase the standing of Black people all over the world.

“That is why we cannot fail. That is why we cannot retreat into our regional enclaves. Too much is at stake. We are too centrally located to be dislocated. Together we must win forever.”

The former vice president noted that Nigerians are far too interconnected to be disconnected, asking, “where would my children, who have a parent from each leg of Nigeria go? Where would your children, who have sunk roots far from their ancestral heritage, go?

“Oliver Wendell Holmes once said that Man’s mind, stretched to a new idea, never goes back to its original dimension.”

“Let me paraphrase him and say, Nigeria unity, stretched to a new frontier, should never go back to its original dimension.

“We must grow in unity. We must glow in community. We must blow away disunity. We have no choice, considering the alternative, which is a calamity that we would not wish to return to. So help us God”.

‘Military needs modern weapons and training’ – IBB says

0

Former military President, Gen.Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, says the Federal Government must equip the military with modern arms and training to effectively deal with the rising rate of terror and insecurity across the country

The Former military head of state, who spoke in an interview with BBC Hausa Service in Kaduna on Sunday, said  it has become imperative for citizens to support government and soldiers in order to bring an end to the crisis but not without adequately equipping the military with modern weapons and training.

“They need to be trained on how to use the modern weapons, not to get weapons and just hand over to them. They should be trained.”He noted

Commenting on reaching out to the present administration with advise, he said  “ We give advice as we can..but we don’t make noise about it. We don’t announce that this is what we say. “We should unite. We should support those in power; we are all working towards achieving the same goal. Between the leaders and citizens, we need peace and a harmonious relationship.

“This problem of insecurity, every government had its experience… but if we unite…I remember how we fought the civil war for three years, the people supported the government, the government did its best, bought what was necessary.

“Those who fought were made to understand that this country is the best for them. It’s not only in Nigeria, many countries encountered this kind of problem. Some had it for ten years but through concerted efforts, they are out of it.  I believe we can get out of this problem. “Both citizens and those governing are trying, but we should know that it is not an easy task.” he concluded.

Hoodlums attack INEC Headquaters in Enugu

0

Barely days after an office of the Independent National Electoral Commission was razed in Udenu Local Government of Enugu State, the state headquarters of the commission was attacked on Sunday night.

NewsWireNGR gathered that hoodlums arrived in a Mini-Bus and invaded the premises of the commission located near Enugu State Broadcasting Service at Independence Layout, burning six Hilux vehicles

NewsWireNGR also learned that they tried to burn buildings in the premises but were resisted by armed security operatives guarding the premises. However, they destroyed and burned some furniture before firefighters arrived.

According to the state INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Emeka Ononamadu, who confirmed the incident to THE PUNCH, “Firefighters were alerted shortly after the inferno was noticed and they rushed to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to the main office complex.”

The State Commissioner of Police in a statement made through the Command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, said “yet to be identified armed miscreants, on Sunday, 16/05/2021 at about 2030hrs, attempted to set the Enugu Headquarters of the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) ablaze but were stiffly resisted by joint security operatives who swiftly mobilized to the scene.

“The State Fire Service personnel, who promptly responded to calls put across to them, helped in quenching the fire already set on four vehicles and two cushions within the office premises.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Aliyu, who immediately raced to the scene alongside Heads of other Security Agencies in the State, has ordered the emplacement of adequate security within the precincts of the office and the launch of a full-scale investigation to unravel the mystery behind the act as well as fish out the assailants.”

Insecurity: PDP Governors to meet in Oyo State

0

The Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will converge on Ibadan today, Monday, the Oyo State capital to discuss the worsening state of insecurity in the nation.

According to a statement released by the Director-General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Hon. Cyril Maduabum, the meeting will be presided over by its Chairman and Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

“The meeting will be presided over by the Forum Chairman, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and attended by all 15 governors elected on the platform of the PDP.

“The meeting will further review the current state of the nation especially issues of national security and the economy, and also fine-tune strategies to support PDP as a viable and necessary alternative to the disastrous APC administration,” the statement read.

Fifteen governors elected under the PDP will attend the meeting being hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom as well as his counterparts Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, and others have been received in Ibadan by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde ahead of the meeting.

It is the second of such meetings after the one the governors had held in Makurdi, the Benue State capital in April, 2021.

It would be recalled that at the end of the Makurdi meeting, the PDP governors had called for the devolution of power and restructuring of the country as a way not to avert another civil war.

They had posited in a communique that the country was drifting at an alarming rate that could lead it to a failed state if not checked.

The governors also expressed deep concern and alarm at the deteriorating relations between various groups in Nigeria.

They said that they were deeply worried that all the nation’s fault lines and differences are being stretched to the limit by a government that clearly lacks the capacity to govern.

The meeting agreed that this has given rise to ethnic and tribal tensions, religious divisions, and various forms of social and political cleavages.

The Governors concluded that Nigeria was in dire need of leadership at the Federal level to avert the looming disaster.

They also expressed concern that the security of lives and property of Nigerians was no longer guaranteed under the present government as a result of leadership incompetence and mismanagement of the nation’s affairs.

While noting that governors have a role to play in the handling of some of the worsening situations, they regretted that their hands are tied behind their backs as the entire coercive authority in the country is monopolized by the APC federal government.

‘I challenge anybody to prove that I acquired property with government funds’ – Okorocha

0

Former Imo Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has denied the allegations that he acquired properties with government funds.

On the TV program Sunday Poltics on Channels TV, he said he had always been successful before coming assuming office in 2011 and dared anyone to come forth with evidence that he mismanaged funds meant for the government.

“I challenge anybody to prove that I acquired any property with any government fund,” he said

He added, “I think people have forgotten that I was Rochas before becoming the governor of Imo State; I think they have forgotten completely.

“If anything, becoming a governor made me even poorer than what I was in the past. I don’t know whether I acquired any property here in Abuja, there is none.”

The Senator representing Imo West senatorial district at the National Assembly, said he believes those making the allegation are referring to a hotel that belongs to his wife and is used to fund their foundation.

According to him, there is no way he could have stolen the government funds.

Speaking about his invitation and brief detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, he said:

“I said to them (EFCC) that I have not come to respond to your call because there is already a matter in court and once a matter is sub judice, you cannot talk about it.

“Imo State government has taken me to court on the same subject matter, and we are at the Federal High Court in Abuja on the same subject matter,” Okorocha said.

He added, “EFCC is doing their job because if there is no report, they can’t nose into whatever you are doing; EFCC is not witch-hunting, they are acting on a petition being written by somebody.”
