‘Southern Governors meeting should not be taken out of context’ – Rochas Okorocha

0

The former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha says the meeting and the call for National Dialogue by the Southern Governors Forum should not be taken out of context.

He said those who have faulted the action of the governors clearly misunderstood the motive behind the meeting.

Okorocha said this while featuring on the Channels Television program, Sunday Politics.

“What I understand from this whole meeting is that things are not well and I like the name they use – national dialogue… that is a call for peace, not for war. That should not be taken out of context,” said Okorocha who now represents Imo West senatorial district in the National Assembly.

He added, “Since 1960, has there been any time the southern governors have met to say that they ban open grazing? The answer is no.

“Has there been any meeting where the southern governors have said the Fulanis or the herders are enemies? No! And I don’t think that is the intention of that meeting; if it is, then I don’t think I am part of it.” he said.

Okorocha however, expressed concerns about the timing of the call. He said : “Coming to other issues of this national dialogue, my only concern about their statement is the time factor; If you look at it now, President Muhammadu Buhari has spent 70 per cent of his tenure as president, he has barely two years to go.

“And if you start forming this dialogue thing, I am sure it will take you six months to compose it and to set up a secretariat and others, that will take you up to January and by then, politics would have taken a different dimension and when will Buhari have the time to complete this whole thing?” the former governor asked.

Former President Jonathan says he never believed in the use of political office to punish people

0

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan said in Benin, Edo State on Sunday that he never believed in the use of temporary political office to punish people.

“My belief, particularly when I joined politics is not to use a temporary privilege, a temporary position God has given to me to punish people,’’ he said.

He was delivering an address at the 50th birthday celebration of Apostle Charles Osazuwa, President of the Rock of Ages Christian Assembly when he made the submission.

Jonathan stressed that people would always be remembered for the legacies they left behind.

“Some of the things I did while in office to which people still make reference was based on the conviction not to use my position to cause the death of anybody.

“Any position I have occupied by divine providence should not be used to create hardship for other people,” he said.

“Just at 50 years, you have impacted significantly on many lives,’’ he told the cleric.

In his address, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki lauded Apostle Osazuwa for using the word of God to address current realities and challenges facing the country.

“What singles you (Apostle Osazuwa) out is your ability and capacity to use and link the challenges we are having today as a country with the scriptures and to use same to give hope to the people particularly the youths.

“Apostle Osazuwa understands the role of God and the role of the scripture in our modern society; nobody, in my view has been able to explain things the way he does.

“Government helps to organise us and when government fails to help us to express ourselves, it’s the church and men of God like you that help us to pick up the piece; government will always be grateful to people like you,’’ he said.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, who was also in attendance, commended the Apostle Osazuwa for using the church to impact the lives of the people.

Okowa said the Church was in a position to proffer solutions to challenges facing the nation and urged its ministers to continue to speak truth to power.

“Food prices soaring” – PDP tackles Buhari to address food insecurity

0

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) calls on President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government to end what it described as insensitivity and take urgent steps to address the food insecurity in the country.

In a statement on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party claimed that under the present administration, over 82.9 million Nigerians can no longer afford their daily meals due to the failure of the government to take practical steps to grow and protect the food sector.

Noting that this has led to severe food scarcity with prices soaring beyond the reach of the people, it stated that Nigeria ranked 98 out of 107 in Global Hunger Index.

According to the PDP, this comes with agonising food shortage, collapsed purchasing power, 33.3 per cent unemployment, 22.95 food inflation rates, as well as increased morbidity and mortality rates.

“Today, under the APC, a bag of rice which sold for N8,000 under the PDP now sells for N30,000; a measure of garri and beans which sold for N150 and N250 now sell for N500 and N800 respectively; a measure of maize and guinea corn which sold for about N150 now sells for N400; while a kilo of meat which sold for about N800 now sells for about N2,300.

“Our party notes that the current food crisis is occasioned by the failure of the APC administration to recalibrate our agricultural sector, as well as to take decisive steps to address the violence, terrorism, and banditry in food production areas,” the statement said.

It added, “Nigerians recall how the APC administration had remained insensitive to calls by our party and well-meaning Nigerians asking it to address the escalated violent attacks and killing of farmers as well as livestock producers by bandits, terrorists, and criminal herders resulting in the desertion of farms in various parts of our country.”

The party decried that farmers now overflow in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps while their fields and farmhouses have been overrun by bandits and terrorists.

It blamed the escalated insecurity on the nation’s highways for the hampered production and distribution value chain, stressing that there was no hope in sight.

The PDP, therefore, asked President Buhari to take urgent steps to address the urgent issue of hunger by opening the silos to cushion the situation and push down prices.

It also asked the government to realign the agricultural sector by beefing up security in food production areas to ensure farmers return to the farmland.

“The PDP also believes that the time has come for President Buhari to provide direct stimuli to small businesses as an incentive to pay salaries, revamp production and boost purchasing power,” the party said.

Niger Delta Congress threaten to resist all actions by secessionist groups” seeking to annex the region

The Niger Delta Congress (NDC) has threatens that, “all actions by secessionist groups to annex the region shall and will be resisted” .

The group in a joint statement noted that, the Niger Delta region “is an autonomous region comprising of Indigenous nationalities.

In a communique issued at the end of its stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt on Saturday and made available to NewsWireNGR, the NDC called on Niger Delta governors to set up a regional security and intelligence outfit “to protect the lives and properties of the people of the Niger Delta region”.

The group, a socio-political organisation of ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta established in 2019, also called for a total overhaul of the 1999 constitution to address “the aspirations of the people”.

Blackout in Kaduna as Labour kickoff 5-day labour warning strike

The Management of Kaduna Electric has revealed that the current power outage in the state is caused by the five-day warning strike embarked upon by labour unions.

Abdulazeez Abdullahi, the company’s head of corporate communications, I’m a statement on Sunday said the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disconnected the power supply to comply with the strike.

The state Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, had in April sack 4,000 workers across the 23 LGAs of the state, citing the fiscal reasons as justifications.

But the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protested the move and have resorted to grounding activities with a warning strike starting from Monday.

Speaking on the blackout and the proposed strike in the statement, Abdullahi urged residents to be wary of criminals who may want to take advantage of the blackout as an avenue to vandalise power supply installations.

“In compliance with the NLC directive, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has knocked off all our 33KV lines in Kaduna State,” Abdullahi said.

“Consequently, we are appealing to all communities, security agencies and vigilante groups to be vigilant so that men of the underworld will not cash in on the situation to vandalise power supply installations.

“Any suspicious movement around distribution sub-stations (transformers) should be reported to the relevant security agency.”

The aviation workers had also threatened to withdraw their services at the Kaduna airport during the strike, while the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) directed its members to halt their services in the state.

However, Jafaru Sani, Kaduna commissioner of local government, and Bariatu Mohammed, head of service, have insisted on the controversial policy of the government saying the state’s high wage bill was not sustainable.

“This government was not elected to devote most public funds to paying government workers and treat that as its defining governance mission, to the detriment of developing the state and its people,” they had said in a statement.

Here’s another statement issued below by the General Manager of the company.

NLC vows to shut down Kaduna over workers sack

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliate unions have restated their determination to continue with the planned five-day warning strike over the recent disengagement of civil servants by the Kaduna state government.

Ayuba Suleiman, the NLC Chairman spoke in Kaduna during a media chat with journalist monitored by NewsWireNGR correspondent on Channels Television Sunday.

He stated that the industrial action will be accompanied by a peaceful protest which will be led by the President of the Union, Ayuba Wabba and other labour leaders across the country.

The strike trailed Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s announcement last month to sack civil servants in the state. He cited financial reasons as justification.

El-Rufai said his government was elected to develop the state and not just to pay salaries to public servants.

“We are very much ready for the industrial action on Monday and it is going to be a dual activity. We are embarking on the withdrawal of activities and equally going to stage a peaceful protest come Monday to press home our demand, grievances to the state government,” Ayuba said.

He explained that the strike which will involve grounding of all socio-economic activities in both public and private sectors in a bid to force the Kaduna State Government to reverse the sack of over 7,000 local government workers and teachers and also suspend its plan to sack another 11,000 civil servants any moment from now.

“I want to assure you that this industrial action is going to be under the care of our amiable President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba. We have had series of meetings today, we met with various stakeholders including all sectors of the economy in the state towards the success of this industrial action.

“In total, you have about 7,700 workers that are disengaged at the local government level. As I am talking to you, over 11,000 workers of the state civil service are pencilled for disengagement. That is why in this April, because of their intention, over 20,000 workers have not yet received their April salary.”

Reacting however to the Labour unions, the Kaduna State Government again defended its decision, saying it is in the interest of over 10 million citizens of the state.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Jafaru Sani, said the threat of industrial action or blackmail by the union will not make the state government to reverse its decision.

He also debunked the claims of the labour union that the government has pencilled down over 11,000 workers for disengagement, adding that there are plans to right-size its public service, but however did give the figures.

The Commissioner explained that the government’s decision to lay off some workers and political appointees is necessary to enable it cope with fiscal challenges and preserve its ability to use its resources for the entire state.

He also denied the allegations of anti-labour activities, stressing that Kaduna State workers have been receiving the new minimum wage since 2019.

The commissioner said: “This government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of its workers. It insists that this is sustainable only in the context of the general welfare of residents of the state that the government is mandated to serve.

“It is not sustainable to persist in spending 84 to 96 per cent of the FAAC received on salaries and personnel cost as has been the experience of the state since October 2020.”

“We now have in our midst bandits” – Ikpeazu says ban on Open grazing must be enforced

0

The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has said that it is imperative that the ban on open grazing in the southern region is enforced.

The ban is part of the resolutions reached by the governors of the southern region after a meeting held in Asaba, Delta State.

According to Ikpeazu who addressed journalists during a Zoom meeting on Saturday, the ban will prevent the activities of criminal herdsmen in the region.

“We are now at the point of making sure that we enforce and implement it and even in doing that I must also share what I see as a challenge to the enforcement of that law,” Ikpeazu said.

“The law is in place and we are taking steps to enforce it.

“It has become imperative that we enforce that law strictly because we just noticed that we have big-time trouble in our hands.

“We have those that we refer to as criminal herdsmen; they are different from the ordinary herdsmen that we have been living with all these years.

“We now have in our midst bandits that have infiltrated from the rest of West Africa and other parts of Africa and their assignment is to come here rape, kill and kidnap people for money.

“It is now very imperative that we enforce that law.”

“Nobody has monopoly of intolerance” – Aisha Yesufu says critics of Southern Governors are on expired drugs

0

Activist, Aisha Yesufu, has slammed critics of Southern governors, adding that those against the communiqué issued at the end of the governors’ recent meeting in Asaba, the Delta State capital, are on expired drugs.

The activist, in a video uploaded on her Twitter handle on Saturday, said nobody has the monopoly of intolerance or self-centredness.

A former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf had criticised the move by the Governors to ban open grazing, saying they did not consult with Fulani leaders.

The 17 Southern state governors had met on Tuesday and called for the restructuring of the country along fiscal federalism, devolution of powers and state policing. They also called on the President to address the nation and convoke a national dialogue to address widespread agitations amongst various groups in the region.

In her reaction, Yesufu said, “I see some people coming out to say the southern governors do not have a right to make the decision for A, B, C, D.”

“The decision that you had as northern governors with what right did you make them? The southern governors do not have a right to make laws in their own states but you have a right to make laws in your own states? In short, the Igbo (Indian Hemp) that you smoke has expired.”

She added, “Nobody has monopoly of intolerance, nobody has monopoly of being selfish, nobody has monopoly of being self-centred; everybody has the capacity to be, that some people don’t do it does not mean anything.”

She hailed the southern governors, saying she was proud of them. She further urged them to increase their meetings like their northern colleagues in order for the country to “move to that Nigeria for all of us, we will start the restructuring that we want”.

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Saturday said the decision of Southern states’ Governors to ban open grazing and call for restructuring was geared towards strengthening the unity of Nigeria.

The Governor made the comment on Saturday at an event in Asaba.

On Friday, Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, also said Governors should be careful in how they approach the issue of restructuring.

But Okowa, who had hosted Tuesday’s meeting, said the Southern Governors were only re-echoing the voices of their people.

“We thank all our brothers in the south for coming together to speak for our people. The things that we’ve said are not new. It’s just the voice of our people that we have continued to echo.

“But unfortunately I read in the papers that somebody says we ought not to talk about certains things, being elected people. If the voice of your people has been heard madly and they’ve continued to talk and you are an elected person and you shy away from giving further voice to their voices, then you ought not be in the position that you occupy.

“We reaffirmed that as a people, as elected Governors, we believe in the unity of our country. But we also went forth to advance the need for certain things to be done in order to give strength to that unity. That cannot be a reason for us to be vilified, obviously not.

“We talked about restructuring, which has been on the table for so long. Both the voices of the PDP and the APC itself have endorsed restructuring. And restructuring is all-inclusive and all-encompassing. We may have different views, different approaches to the restructuring, but when we sit on the table in dialogue, we will be able to agree best what is good for Nigeria and what is good for the component parts of Nigeria.”

Statement on center for clinical care and clinical research

Correction: An earlier version of our story, titled: ‘Murder in Uyo: Who Killed Hiny Umoren?’ had incorrectly described the Center for Clinical Care and Clinical Research (CCCRN) as a ‘Ghost NGO’ and stated, that, Uduak Apkan, the self confessed killer of a job seeker, Iniobong Umoren met with one Kufre Effiong at the CCCRN premises.

That version has since been disputed by the CCCRN and we have corrected the story to remove this assertion. Using GPS and cellular geolocation, the telco call records placed the address in question at 58, Unit G Ewet Housing Estate, which is the address of CCCR Nigeria’s Uyo Office.

There is however a mapping error which duplicates the geographical location in question as S9, Unit G, Ewet Housing Estate, which is the address of Davok Suites. In other words, on digital mapping services such as google maps – which telco records rely on – Davok Suites often shows up as CCCR Nigeria. This was also clearly acknowledged in the story. Below is a composite image proving the existence of this mapping error.

The Center, located in Akwa Ibom state, provides health, protection, education, nutrition and household economic strengthening services (among others) to more than 100,000 orphans and vulnerable children and their households – a statement issued by the Organization reads in parts.

According to the statement of the CCCRN, the Center for Clinical Care and Clinical Research has been in operation since 2010 , “We therefore urge all members of the public to note that The Center for Clinical Care and Clinical Research (CCCRN) is a responsible non-profit organization and has absolutely nothing to do with Mr. Effiong, organ trafficking, harvesting”.

Our story about the murder of Iniubong Umoren, whose alleged killer Mr. Frank Uduak Ezekiel Akpan (Mr. Frank) has been arrested by the Police is to unmask persons behind the killing of the Job seeker and not meant to discredit any group, Individual or organisation.
