The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Mike Omeri has called on the general public not to patronize a purported recruitment website by the Agency, calling it a scam.
This appeal came when Omeri was addressing the management and staff of the Agency at the 2014 NOA General Staff Meeting.
He said the Agency has not sought approval for recruitment of personnel and therefore, will not be in position to advertise for vacancies. According to him, any recruitment portal purportedly from the Agency was meant to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.
Omeri stated further that the Agency would always advertize in national dailies for job placement, just as he warned job seekers to disregard the portal: www.bestjobs.com/noa describing it as the work of scammers.
The NOA boss however urged those seeking information about the Agency to visit any of its offices across the country or the Agency’s website and news portal: www.noa.gov.ng and www.transformation.gov.ng.

By most accounts, the dawdling growth of the Nigerian economy could be partly attributed to the dying family business culture in the society.
Some economic experts note that most of the family companies, which acted as a catalyst for the development of the national economy, have been forced to close down.
With a sense of nostalgia, some of the experts recall that some defunct family business empires once made considerable impact on the country’s economy.
In the media industry, for instance, they cite media organisations such as Concord Newspapers, Muri Television and Desmin Television as some examples of defunct family businesses.
In the road transportation sub-sector, there are some solid family companies which have now gone into extinction.
Such transport firms include P.N Emera Transport Service, Osondu Motors, More Days, More Hope Transport, Chief D.E and Sons Motors, Chief Obande Obeya Transport Ltd as well as Let them Say Transport Service.
At a point in time, the aviation sector also prided itself with airlines such as Okada, Chanchangi, Slok, as well as Haka airlines
Some of the renowned family businesses that are now defunct include outfits like Okin Biscuits, Tilley Igado Construction Nig. Ltd, Gadi and Sons Nig. Ltd., among others.
The list of family businesses which are now extinct appears inexhaustible but observers insist that family businesses, nonetheless, represent a channel for family members to pool resources and start a business.
A question, however, remains: Why did the family businesses hit the rocks because of extraneous factors such as death of their proprietors?
Answers to the question will definitely throw up some food for thought, particularly because of the success story of family businesses in other parts of the world.
Analysts tend to wonder why family businesses are sustainable and enduring in some countries, citing the Jewish experience as an illustration.
“All over the world, the success of family-owned businesses within the Jewish communities is highly fascinating; in fact, the Israelis control many economies across the world,’’ says Dr Kunle Abiodun, an agricultural economist.
He says that the apprenticeship traditions of the Jews have somewhat fostered the fulfilment of their family businesses.
Besides, Abiodun notes that the economies of several Asian countries, particularly China and Japan, experienced a remarkable growth because of the due recognition of the pivotal roles played by family businesses.
What then is responsible for the abysmal performance of many family businesses in Nigeria?
Chief Chris Okafor, the Chief Executive Officer of Mayo Mayo Nig. Ltd., insists that family businesses in Nigeria can bolster the country’s economy if tangible efforts are made to recognise and support them.
He underscores the need to appreciate the fact that the structured growth of family businesses can stimulate the revival of the country’s economy, particularly during the difficult economic times.
Okafor, nonetheless, blames the inability of most family businesses to sustain their founders’ vision on the greed and reluctance of their managers to reposition the companies for effective service delivery.
Prof. C.O Obinna of the Department of Mass Communication, Benue State University, Makurdi, says that Nigeria could adopt the “Asian Tiger economic template’’ to develop its economy.
He, however, concedes that the complex business environment in the country remains a major challenge, as “most small businesses are just like briefcases.
“But I tell you, the success story of the Asian Tiger economies, which forms the fulcrum of most economic conferences across the world, could guide efforts to restructure Nigeria’s economy.
“Nigeria can better address the burden of lack and poverty in families by deliberately stirring the concept of family business but some factors like astronomical rents, high lending rates must be tackled,’’ he adds.
Sharing similar sentiments, Dr Sidney Inegbedion, the President of Nigeria Entrepreneurs Forum, insists that the practice of state capitalism, as an economic modus operandi in the country, is largely retrogressive.
“In Nigeria, because of the level of private sector development, we have been christened to be a state capitalist society.
“By that, I mean that the government has a large share in terms of determining the level of economic activity.
“Anybody who wants to make economic decisions ends up working with the public sector, either to secure contract or do whatever they want to do.
“The civil servant has a lot of influence over such economic activity in Nigeria,’’ he says
All the same, Mr Chima Ikechkwu, a business consultant, says that the concept of family business in the country is as old as human existence.
“Families have always been in business, from farming to petty trading and to handicrafts but the problem is that these creative powers have not been developed to a competitive level.
“In other climes, the creative abilities of individuals and families are properly harnessed to engender a progressive chain of growth in the larger economy.
“Families’ entrepreneurial risks led to the invention or creation of global brands and automobiles like Honda, Yamaha, Jinjeng, Toyota, Ford and so on.
“We can replicate the same kind of development in Nigeria if family businesses are supported,’’ Ikechkwu says.
According to the Family Business Review Magazine, family businesses play a pivotal and influential factor in the growth of the U.S. economy.
The August 2013 edition of the publication says that over 80 per cent of business enterprises in North America are family businesses.
The magazine cites a report which indicates that family businesses account for 60 per cent of total U.S. employment and 78 per cent of all new jobs.
It says that the impact includes 65 per cent of the wages paid, while 34 per cent of the family businesses are currently listed on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.
Analysts contend that in spite of any seeming challenge, family businesses, which form a sizeable percentage of the businesses in the organised private sector, still remain a pivotal factor in Nigeria’s economy.
It is, perhaps, the recognition of the fundamental role which family businesses play in the economy that compelled the Benue State Government to assist efforts to set up small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the state.
Gov. Gabriel Suswam, who says that the government aided efforts to establish 200 SMEs in 2013, recalls that the people were encouraged to organise themselves into clusters of family cooperatives in order to access credit facilities for business start-up capital.
Observers laud the government’s initiative but they underscore the need to nurture small scale enterprises in Nigeria and ensure their survival.
Dr Pierce Utor, an economist, insists that businesses could only thrive in a sustainable way if they are nurtured, preserved and transferred to the next generation.
He says that most family businesses in Nigeria failed because of perceptible deficiencies which include the lack of financial discipline and the non-application of best practices in their management.
All in all, experts stress the need to harness the potential of family businesses, as part of pragmatic efforts to strengthen the country’s economy.
President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, paid a private visit to the Akran of Badagry, De-Wheno Aholu Menutoyi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the President arrived at the palace of the monarch in Badagry, Lagos State, at about 10.35 a.m. and was received by the Akran and the Chiefs in Council.
Welcoming the President to the palace, the Chiefs in Council poured libation, using water, alligator pepper and wine.
They also offered prayers for the President, his administration and for the peace of the nation.
After the welcome ceremony, the Akran and the President retired to an inner room in the palace, where they held private discussions for about 35 minutes.
After the closed door meeting, the Akran said that the visit, though private, was special to him and the entire Badagry people.
He told the President that Badagry was the first place in the country where Christianity was preached.
The monarch requested the Federal and Lagos State Government to work together and make the town a religious tourist centre.
He assured the President of his support and the Badagry people to the Federal Government.
The President thanked the monarch and the people for the peace in the land, which he said was brought about by good leadership.
He also assured that the government would do its best to return and preserve the glorious day of Badagry.
“I want to thank you all for the support you have given to the government and for the peace in Badagry.
“We do not get disturbing stories from Badagry and this is not brought about by chance but his Majesty, his cabinet and all senior Badagry people.
“Also, for the PDP members who have come out to receive us, we thank you most sincerely. I want to thank you for this warm reception and assure you that the glorious days of Badagry will be returned.’’
It would be recalled that the President had on Friday paid similar visits to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi and the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan
An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan will commence hearing on Feb. 25 in a motion to stop the All Progressives Congress (APC) from conducting its membership registration in the state.
Justice Muktar Abimbola adjourned the case on Monday when counsel to Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Mr Bowofade Aderemi, filed a motion to remove the name of his client from the list of defendants.
Aderemi said that his client was covered by the immunity clause as a seating governor of Oyo State.
Counsel to other defendants, however, asked for an adjournment on the grounds that they had just been informed about the case by their clients.
The respondents in the suit include Chief Akin Oke, Interim Chairman of APC in the state and Alhaji Razak Folorunsho, former Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Oyo State.
Also joined was Mr Suleiman Abiodun Oyaremi, Chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the state.
The motion ex-parte was brought to the court by Mr Adebayo Shittu, a former governorship candidate of the defunct CPC.
Shittu alleged that the APC had contravened its constitution and guidelines by engaging in activities that could jeopardise his aspiration and that of other members of the party.
He told the court that he was interested in contesting the 2015 governorship election on the platform of the APC in Oyo State.
Shittu said his interest would not be adequately protected unless he was represented and involved in the entire process as a member of the State Harmonising Committee.
He said that the Interim National Executive Committee of the party had recommended that the state Harmonising Committee be comprised of three nominees from each of the defunct ACN, CPC and ANPP.
Shittu claimed that he was the CPC nominee for the committee.
He also said that when the APC finally released names of appointees into the Oyo State Harmonisation Committee, his name was replaced with a person not nominated by the CPC.
Shittu urged the court to stop APC from continuing to violate his right, arguing that it could cause him injury if not reversed.

Former Georgian Prime Minister, Vano Merabishvili was on Monday sentenced to five years in jail over charges of bribery, misappropriation of public funds and abuse of office.
Merabishvili became prime minister in July 2012 and held the position for only four months because his United National Movement party lost its majority in parliament in October.
The case against him related to payments made by the state to more than 1,000 activists from his party in the run-up to parliamentary elections.
Prosecutors also accused him of acquiring a luxury villa from a company through blackmail.
Merabishvili, who served as Interior Minister for almost eight years before becoming prime minister, was one of several allies of former President Mikheil Saakashvili to be accused of graft by the government that took power after the elections.
Saakashvili’s party was pushed into the role of opposition, and businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili emerged as premier.
Ivanishvili stepped down as prime minister in November and named his longtime political associate, Irakli Gharibashvili as the new prime minister.
Merabishvili, who had faced up to 12 years in prison, had called the charges against him politically motivated.
Mr Efosa Idehen, the Head, Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement of Nigeria Communication Commission, on Monday said some SIM card registration agents were still using the pictures of goats and foodstuff instead of human beings.
Idehen, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan, said:
“It may interest you to know that after the telephone operators might have completed their own part of the registration and forwarded it to us as the regulators; we sometimes find pictures of goats and yams.
“We also do find pictures of women with men’s name and vice versa.
“When information got to the NCC that some people were buying SIM cards without their biometrics, it became worrisome to us because the main purpose of SIM card registration was going to be defeated.
“Our findings also showed that those SIM cards that were not registered were those used by criminals like kidnappers.
“It may also interest you to know that these already pre-activated SIM cards are usually sold at a premium sum of N1, 500 as against N100 for the normal ones.
“We have had to sanction GSM operators in the past for not monitoring the activities of their agents.
“Anyone who sells fully activated SIM cards is as guilty as the person who registers the card because they are not supposed to be registered before sale.
“In Osun state, I arrested some teenagers of 13 and 14 years of age, took them to their parents and verbally warned them that what their children were doing would land them in problem.”
Idehen said anyone found with pre-activated SIM cards would be prosecuted and may end up paying a fine of N200,000.
NCC is mandated to create a credible data base of Nigerians using the GSM.
High-life artiste, Flavour N’abania was accused sometime last year of abandoning the mother and family of late music artiste, MC Loph before she passed on herself.
Well, in a recent interview with Punch Newspaper’s Nonye Ben Nwankwo, the artiste has finally revealed his own side of the story. As a matter of fact, he was not MC Loph’s friend. Excerpts from the interview below:
The death of your colleague, MC Loph, generated a lot of controversies; it was alleged that you abandoned his mother when he died.
MC Loph and I weren’t as close as people thought. I met Loph through Mr. Raw when I came to Lagos. He wanted me to produce for him the same way I was producing for Mr. Raw. Somehow, we came together and we did the Osondi Owendi song. We later found out that we came from the same village.
Was there an issue after the song was released?
I played a very big part in the song. People would always want me to perform the song. But I couldn’t. What is the essence of collaborating when you cannot play the song? It didn’t make any sense. He said people told him I was performing his song. I felt, ‘oh, it is now your song?’ That was the last time we really spoke to each other. I decided to ‘free’ him.
So he told you not to perform the song?
Yes. He didn’t pay me to feature in the song. My voice was significant in the song. He was more popular than me in Lagos then. But I was more popular in the East. So if I was called to come and perform at shows, I would tell them to call MC Loph and pay him since I couldn’t feature the song. I did a song with Tiwa. I don’t mind if she performs the song. People would think of Flavour if she performs the song. That is the essence of collaboration. I don’t even rap. I wouldn’t have tried to take his line because I don’t know how to rap.
Did you ever meet his mother?
I met his mother just once in my life. We went for a show at Nnewi (Anambra State) and we passed through our village. He got down to see his mother and I followed him. I greeted her and I gave her money that day. She was very happy. We left. I was surprised when people started saying I abandoned his mother when he died. It is not fair to talk about this since he is no more. But then, I feel it is time I became honest and open up because people have said a lot of things about me. It is not fair. He never greeted my father one day, let alone visiting him. But I couldn’t confront him because of that. I felt he didn’t have any business with my father. He could choose to greet him or not. We were not related, we just came from the same village.
Are you saying you people were not friends?
We were not friends at all. We just did a song together. People just had a misconception about the whole thing. I never told anybody this before and I still insist it is not something we should talk about.
Why didn’t you attend his burial ceremony?
I had a show. My mother went on our behalf. Some members of my staff went as well. In my place, they say condolence never expires. I can still walk up to that family and condole with them. My brother died and I wasn’t there. We had a show as well. It wasn’t anything personal. My father understood that I couldn’t come for my brother’s burial because I wasn’t around.
