Same Sex Marriage: Catholic Church Maintains Stance

The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, has insisted that the stance of the church on same sex marriage has not changed and though it will not excommunicate the gay community but rather pray and counsel them to overcome their abnormal behaviour..

Kaigama, who spoke in Jos while briefing newsmen on Sunday on the outcome of the 3rd Extra Ordinary Synod of the Family of the Catholic Church held in Rome recently, said that the outcome of the synod had been given varied interpretation, especially its position on same-sex marriage.

According to him, the Church does not condone and has not endorsed same-sex marriage, but considered marriage as a union between a man and a woman for the purpose of raising a family to reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ on the importance of the family as a domestic church.

“The concern of the Synod is the biblical teaching on marriage and family and this is theme of the Synod. The Book of Genesis shows that the man and the woman are created in the image and likeness of God. In receiving and accepting each other, the man and the woman recognise that they are made for each other. Through procreation, they collaborated with God in accepting and transmitting life. By the grace of God, a man and a woman are united in marriage and are to be faithful to, and love each other forever.”

According to him, the Synod emphasized marriage as sacred and indissoluble and as such could not condone anything outside this divine order of God and added that what had been misconstrued as the church’s endorsement of homosexuality was the emphasis on the fact that those with such tendencies were human beings created by the same God and instead of treating them as second hand citizens, they needed to be helped spiritually to overcome such tendencies.

“The Synod did not endorse gay marriage, but emphasised the indissolubility of marriage as a union between a man and a woman according to the scripture and the church teachings, using the Holy Family of Nazareth as a model for all families.”

2015: First Lady’s Plot To Install 6 Governors Threatens Jonathan’s Chances

President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2015 re-election bid has come under threat due to the persistent attempt of his wife, First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan to impose her favoured candidates on the party.

Already, some elders and governors in the Peoples Democratic Party have warned that if the dictatorial tendencies of the First Lady continues, the President would end up disappointed. Party leaders are not impressed with the attempt of the First Lady to impose herself on the state working committees of the party, especially in Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi and Kwara states.

“I have spoken to many elders in the party and they said they would not vote for President Jonathan because of his wife. Even myself will not vote for PDP.  It is not because we hate Jonathan but we can no longer cope with the overbearing influence of his wife. So, expect among other things and protest votes against Jonathan by even PDP members.

“All we don’t understand is why the President is allowing her to carry on the way she is doing. I think there is something the First Lady is using as a secret weapon against the President that we don’t know. No President has allowed his wife to be this power drunk. What is happening is not normal.” A Chieftain of the PDP told NewsDiaryOnline.

He said the issue of the First Lady’s excessive interference with party matters was one of the problems some governors confronted the President with in a recent meeting between Jonathan and the PDP governors.

He further recalled the scenario in Rivers State where Patience Jonathan is leading a campaign to make former Education Minister, Nyesom Wike, the Governor.

“The PDP elders are watching with shame the macabre dance in Rivers State by the First Lady. Recently, the First Lady visited Nyesom Wike in his house in Port Harcourt.

“In that televised visit, she held Wike’s hand and placed it in the hand of Peter Odili. It is an endorsement and it has never happened before. That singular act is unbecoming of a First Lady. With what she is doing in Rivers, we won’t be surprised if PDP loses that state to APC”.

“This is the first time a wife of the President would be allowed by her husband to be this powerful. It is shameful that Dame Patience has the liberty to summon service chiefs, ministers and top members of our party at will.

“Remember her meddlesomeness in the Chibok girls’ saga how she called meetings of service chiefs and parents of the girls and was shouting at them, insulting them on national television.

“Where has it happened before? It was one embarrassment too many for Nigeria. The First Lady has brought the country to ridicule and party leaders are not happy with her excesses”, he said.

The source also lamented that the First Lady was fond of acting without seeking the permission of her husband adding that Dame Patience had made President Jonathan look like a weakling.

He said, “Nigerians are amused that she has no regard for her husband. Imagine her recent resignation as a Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa State civil service. Before the appointment, she begged for it and even her husband appealed for it.

“It was the appointment that even the last Governor of the state, Mr. Timipre Sylva, refused to give her. But when she resigned because of her problem with Governor Seriake Dickson, she did not tell her husband.

“She has been boasting to her aides and other governors that she would ensure that Dickson does not return and that there is nothing even her husband will do about it. The President must call his wife to order to stand a chance.

Lagos Deputy, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Opts For Senate To Replace Ganiyu Solomon

By PM News

The race to replace Senate Minority Whip, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, as representative of Lagos West Senatorial District in the Upper Legislative Chamber, assumed a more interesting and competitive edge with the decision of the state deputy governor, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, to run for the seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Posters of the Deputy Governor indicating her intention to run for the seat are all over local government and local council development areas which make up arguably the largest senatorial district in the country.

Senator Solomon has indicated his intention to run for the governorship of the state, hence, the scramble for his replacement.
It was learnt exclusively that Princess Adefulire has received the endorsement and approval of the state national leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who it was reported poured encomiums on the deputy governor for being a committed and loyal party member.

“Joke is a real loyalist, a committed member of our party and vision. I will support her aspiration,” the two-time former governor of Lagos State was quoted as saying.

Princess Adefulire combined a rich experienced in the executive arm with the one she gathered as a legislator in the aborted Third Republic when she was elected member of the state House of Assembly on the platform of then Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In the current political dispensation, Princess Adefulire was a member of the state Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) before her appointment as the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in 2003, a position she held until 2011 when she became the state Deputy Governor.

In the race for Lagos West Senate seat, Princess Adefulire will slug it out with two time former Chairman of Agege Local Government and ex-Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperatives in the state, Chief Enoch Kolapomoye Olorunfunwa (EKO) Ajiboso; former Minister of State for Defence, Ademola Seriki; current Chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government, Kamal Abiodun Bayewu; and current Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mrs. Regina Iyabode Obasa; for the APC ticket.

Brazil’s Leftist, Dilma Rousseff Narrowly Gets Re-elected President

Brazil’s leftist President Dilma Rousseff narrowly won reelection to a second term Sunday, calling for unity after the most divisive race since the return to democracy in 1985.

Rousseff, the first woman president of the world’s seventh-largest economy, took 51.64 percent of the vote to 48.36 percent for business favorite Aecio Neves, election officials said with more than 99 percent of ballots counted.

After a vitriolic campaign that largely split the country between the poor north and wealthier south, Rousseff crucially picked up enough middle-class votes in the industrialized southeast to cement a fourth straight win for her Workers’ Party (PT).

The 66-year-old, a former leftist guerrilla who was jailed and tortured for fighting the 1964-1985 dictatorship, called for unity. And she promised dialogue to give Brazil the changes she said that she knows voters want.

“This president is open to dialogue. This is the top priority of my second term,” she told supporters in the capital Brasilia, clad in white beside two-term predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

After four years of sluggish economic growth culminating in recession this year, she admitted her own report card had to improve and vowed to combat corruption.

Sudan’s Bashir Wins Party Backing For Vote, Set To Extend 25 year Rule

Sudan’s ruling party has given final approval to President Omar Hassan al-Bashir as its candidate in next year’s presidential vote, sealing his bid to extend his rule after 25 years in power, reports Reuters News Agency.

Wanted on charges of genocide and war crimes by the International Criminal Court, Bashir has reason to fear his future should he leave office as he would have to entrust his fate to a successor. He can now cast those fears aside.

National Congress Party leaders endorsed Bashir by a 94 percent margin at a party conference late on Saturday. Senior leaders had already eliminated four rival party candidates in an earlier vote last week.

The formal endorsement confirmed what many in Sudan had expected: Bashir would break his promise to step down and not run for another term in April 2015 polls.

Though the 70-year-old Bashir pledged in January to redraw the constitution, bring opposition parties into government, and launch a national dialogue, no visible progress has been made.

The few active opposition movements in Sudan are already losing hope of any change in the political climate and some have recently announced their plan to boycott the presidential vote.

Dire economic conditions since the secession of the oil-rich southern half of the country in 2011 — including inflation that currently hovers around 40 percent — anger struggling citizens.

However, some Sudanese feel they cannot trust alternatives to Bashir, who has proven himself a political survivor, fighting off coup attempts, civil wars, and international isolation.

South Africa Goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, Killed

South Africa’s captain and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has died after being shot in the chest in Vosloorus, South Africa on Sunday night.

Meyiwa’s death comes just two days after South African 800m runner Mbulaeni Mulaudzi died in a car accident, and a day after helping Pirates reach the Telkom Knockout semifinals in a 4-1 win over Ajax Cape Town.

Speculation on the incident suggests Meyiwa was shot in the chest after he refused to give up his mobile phone to his assailant, with the goalkeeper declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police in South Africa have stated via twitter, “We can assure all South Africans that we will do all we can to bring Meyiwa’s killers to book.”

South Africa Police also offered a reward of R150,000 to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the culprits, whom they believe are three in number.

Meyiwa was aged 27 and had won six caps with the South Africa national team, helping the Bafana Bafana to lead its African Cup of Nations qualifying group with 10 points and no goals conceded after four matches.

South African police said Sunday night they would reward anyone who could offer information leading to the arrest of the killers of Senso Mesiya, the Orlando Pirates captain and goalkeeper. Mesiya also keeps for the national team, Bafana Bafana.

Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead late Sunday near Johannesburg.

Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale said Meyiwa, 27, was gunned down at a house in Vosloorus, a township about 30 kilometres south of the city, and declared dead on admission to hospital.

Police said there were seven people inside the house, including Meyiwa, when two suspects entered and another remained outside.

Boko Haram In Fresh Abduction Of 30 Boys And Girls In Nigeria

Around 30 adolescents — some of them girls aged as young as 11 — have been abducted in northeast Nigeria over the weekend by suspected Boko Haram rebels, a local village chief told reporters on Sunday.

“The insurgents… grabbed young people, boys and girls, from our region,” said Alhaji Shettima Maina, who is in charge of the Mafa village around 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of the city of Maiduguri.

“They took all boys aged 13 and over… and all girls aged 11 and more. According to our information, 30 young people were abducted in the last two days.”

Another village elder, Mallam Ashiekh Mustapha, confirmed the account. Both men said 17 people were also killed in recent days in a Boko Haram attack on the nearby village of Ndongo.

Boko Haram, which has been waging a bloody insurgency since 2009, has been responsible for waves of attacks and abductions.

In April, the Islamist rebel group snatched more than 200 schoolgirls from Chibok in northeast Nigeria, triggering an international outcry.

Kidnapping young women and girls — as well as forcibly conscripting young men and boys to fight for Boko Haram — is a well-established tactic by the militants.

Some estimates put the number of women held by the group in the high hundreds. Most are believed to be forced into marriages with rebels.

Maina said his village and areas around it were targeted in nearly daily raids by Boko Haram, prompting many residents to flee to the city of Maiduguri for safety.

He said he had pleaded for help from the Nigerian government but that so far none had been forthcoming.

With the 30 kids captured at the weekend, the number of Boko Haram recent captives has ballooned to about 90, excluding the 219 schoolgirls captured last April in Chibok, Borno state. The recent captives were taken from Adamawa and Borno states.

Leave Akpabio Alone, Akwa Ibom Government Tells Sheikh Ahmad Gumi

The Akwa Ibom State Government has cautioned the Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, to leave Governor Godswill Akpabio out of his vituperation against President Goodluck Jonathan, while accusing him of inciting Nigerians against the president.

A recent statement credited to Sheikh Gumi had quoted the Islamic cleric as having advised President Jonathan to withdraw from the presidential race and give way to Akpabio to “finish” for him.

Reacting to Gumi’s position, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, made available to NewsWireNGR said Gumi’s advice was a disparaging commentary on the effort of President Jonathan in piloting the affairs of the nation.

According to Mr Umanah, “even more worrisome is the wild insinuation that the President is responsible for the Boko Haram insurgency in-spite of the efforts of the President in curbing security challenges and particularly the recent negotiation and cease fire agreement intended to bring an end to insurgency in some parts of the country,” he said.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications said Gumi’s comments would have been ignored if he had not dragged in the name of Akpabio as possible replacement to President Jonathan, a view Umanah described as absurd and a ploy to create a wedge between the Akwa Ibom State Governor and the presidency by desperate politicians.

According to Umanah, “This of course, follows a similar pattern of structured falsehood by certain renegades among the political class, especially some governorship aspirants in Akwa Ibom State who believe that their sure way to getting into power in 2015 is to portray Governor Akpabio in bad light in order to incite the Presidency against him.

“For the umpteenth time, we wish to state unequivocally that Governor Godswill Akpabio is not interested in running for the office of President of Nigeria in 2015, but to assiduously work towards the electoral victory of President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP in the 2015 general elections.

“We totally distance the Governor, Government, and indeed the good people of Akwa Ibom State from the mischievous diatribe whilst calling on Nigerians to ignore this divisive and ill-conceived advice by Ahmad Gumi,” the statement said.

It reiterated the aspiration of Chief Akpabio to contest the forth-coming election to represent the people of Akwa Ibom North-West in the Senate and pledged the support of the people of Akwa Ibom to the re-election Jonathan.

First Lady Denies Asking Amaechi For Rivers Money

Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Sunday denied asking Rivers state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi for funds meant for the state.

Amaechi had while speaking in Port Harcourt at the joint graduation of the students of University of Ibadan and pioneer graduates of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, on Saturday quoted as saying that his problem with Mrs. Jonathan started after he rejected her demand.

“I refused to give them money in Abuja because if I do that, I won’t be able to carry out any development project or finish the road from Rumuolumeni to Rumuepirikom.
“The quarrel between me and the wife of the President is because she said I should bring your money, Rivers people’s money and share with her,” he said.
But Mrs. Jonathan, in a statement by her media assistant, Mr. Ayo Adewuyi, said Amaechi’s statement was a deliberate attempt to malign her and score cheap political point.
“Having waited patiently for Governor Amaechi to refute the statement credited to him about the First Lady, (with the assumption that he was misquoted), it has become clear that it was a deliberate attempt to malign Dame Patience Jonathan and score cheap political point.
“The Governor may have been beclouded by the political uncertainty surrounding him to make such a jaundiced and unsubstantiated allegation that the First Lady asked him to bring Rivers State money to share.

“This is a blatant lie designed to denigrate the person of Dame Patience Jonathan and rubbish the Presidency. This is to say the least most unfortunate.

“It is crystal clear that Governor Amaechi is looking for cheap excuse for his failure in the governance of the state. We say without any iota of equivocation that the First Lady never made such request and could not have done so in any way either directly and indirectly” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has warned Amaechi to stop insulting the President and First Lady or face legal action

Presidency Warns Amaechi To Desist From Insulting The President

The Presidency has warned Governor Rotimi Amaechi to desist from insulting President Goodluck Jonathan or face the consequence of including legal action.

At the seventh year anniversary of the Supreme Court Judgement that brought him into power, Amaechi had thrown several political missiles at the President and his wife Mrs Patience Jonathan. He accused the President of abandoning Rivers state and the south south region of the country

But in a statement release in Abuja on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati said the Rivers state governor’s penchant to insult the president and denigrate the office was an “irresponsible and rascally behaviour”

“Governor Rotimi Amaechi took his obnoxious willingness to denigrate the highest office in the land in a reckless bid to advance his selfish political interests to a new level of irresponsible and rascally behaviour yesterday in Port Harcourt with his totally false and baseless vituperations against President Jonathan, the First Lady and the Federal Government.

“It appears from the Governor’s completely unfounded and off-the-mark allegations that he had totally lost all sense of propriety, decorum and responsible political behaviour and resorted to unacceptable demagoguery, libel, blackmail and incitement of public disorder.

“Unless his unbridled ambition and desire for self- promotion have completely befuddled his mental faculties and caused him to totally lose touch with reality, Governor Amaechi must know that his claims and allegations are untrue.

“We can only assume therefore that he is deliberately spewing malicious falsehood in a desperate effort to incite the people of Rivers State and Nigeria against his assumed political foes.

“We warn him that there are legal, constitutional and moral limits to political rascality beyond which he will not be allowed to go without repercussions.

“The immunity which he currently enjoys notwithstanding, Governor Amaechi should be under no illusions: A day of reckoning will surely come when he will answer for all his actions and false allegations against President Jonathan, the First Lady and the Federal Government.

“He should also know that Nigerians are aware of the truth and will never be fooled or swayed by his arrant opportunism and anti-Jonathan rantings.

“Nigerians know that while Mr. Amaechi falsely accuses others of corruption, he cannot show or explain to the people of Rivers State what he has done with the billions of Naira that has accrued to the state under his tenure.

“They also know that while Amaechi continues to falsely accuse the Jonathan Administration of having done nothing for Rivers State, he has recklessly squandered huge state resources on dubious, vain-glorious projects or self aggrandizement.

“Nigerians will know too that while he falsely alleges that Rivers and other states have not received funds due to them from the Federation account, the only outstanding allocation was for September, which was released to all states well over a week ago.

“The Governor should stop trying to make President Jonathan the scapegoat for his woeful performance in Rivers State and look to his own very apparent failings and incompetencies.

“He should also stop blackmailing the First Lady who has demanded nothing from him other than good governance, justice, equity, fairness, real development and progress in Rivers State”.

Ikuforiji presented the agenda while declaring his governorship ambition to party members at the Lagos Television (LTV) Blue Roof in Ikeja.

“I will ensure that even to the most politically aloof Lagos resident, politics will be attractive and would no longer perceived as a dirty game characterized by nepotism,

“Our schools in Lagos will be restored to their former glory and I will not rest until LASU is one of the top 500 universities in the world.

“I am in this race to make a difference; my conscience tells me this is the best time to do the will of God for Lagos.

“I am well placed to lead this new phase in the history of Lagos and with the strength of character that I have shown, particularly since I was elected in 2003 as a member of the house and Speaker since 2005

Onikan Stadium, Lagos.

“continuing the progress, securing the future”

I acknowledge the presence of all our party leaders, our party members, and fellow lagosians.

The presence of thousands of supporters today is an attestation of the state-wide consultations that we commenced since last year. The acceptance and popularity of my candidacy, the great turn out and the
fantastic support we have received from every corner of the state and beyond, from all sectors and various religious persuasions confirm that this is a divine moment in the history of lagos state.

In recognition of this support, i, akinwunmi ambode, in your presence and in the presence of god, formally put myself forward to run for the position of the governor of lagos state.

I make this decalaration with the highest sense of responsibility. I am putting myself forward because i believe i have the qualities required to continue the giant strides, which our great party, all progressives
congress has achieved in lagos in recent years.

Lagos is my state and you are my people. I shall work to serve you. I shall never do less. Here and now, i dedicate myself to this task. I shall not flinch nor lose focus.

The last fifteen years have witnessed an irreversible growth and development of our great state with a foundation laid concretely by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu between 1999 and 2007. The consolidation and actualisation of that growth, of which we are all living testimonies, have been achieved by the incumbent governor, Babtunde Raji Fashola.(SAN)

i stand before you today in the spirit of the continuity of excellence that lagos is known for. My vision and mission is to create a clean, secure and prosperous lagos state that is driven by a vibrant economy
and supported by quality service, equity and justice.

Our message is lagos.

Lagos is leadership,

lagos is accountability,

lagos is good governance,

lagos is opportunities and

lagos is service.

This is what i stand for.

I am resolved to offer you genuine leadership that will be accountable with all the principles of good governance, a government of inclusion that will not leave any race or gender behind. No matter your age, sex, tribe or any other status, as long as you reside in lagos, we will make
lagos liveable for you.

We will work to create opportunities for all and offer selfless service. As we proceed we will leave no one behind. What our great party stands for is change, positive change. We will create wealth. We will create new jobs. We will challenge ourselves to make lagos a better place. We will take lagos to the next level. We are going to do it together.

Everybody counts. The aged, widows, artisans, students, children, the physically challenged, professionals, we all have a part to play. For corporate lagos, lagos is open for business, even for greater business. We have the political will to move lagos to the next level. We are going to face our challenges by ourselves. Nobody is going to do that for us. With our collective will, we will overcome them.

I call on all muslims, christians, and people of other religious persuasions to come out en masse and ensure we vote in a candidate that has the interest of lagos and lagosians at heart. A candidate that is
passionate about lagos. A candidate that truly understands the needs of the ordinary people.  I am that candidate.

Lagos is the most cosmopolitan state in nigeria and there is no room for discrimination. Whether you are igbo, efik, ijaw, hausa, fulani, a foreigner, whoever you are, so far you live or work in lagos, our
government will work for you and you will be adequately represented.

We want a lagos that will protect abdullahi; that will address the issues of chukwuma and uphold the well-being of yewande. We want a lagos that will not deny any nigerian citizen the right of political
participation and access to services. It is not about sectionalism. This is the new nigeria that we want to build and lagos is the focal point from where we would build the nigeria of our dreams.

Every family is represented in lagos and have benefited from the purposeful apc government. If you believe lagos can do more, it is imperative that we do not only win in lagos but we must also take over
the centre at abuja. So when we say change, we mean change in its total ramifications. Change at the center. We want to have more. We want more. The only way we can do this is to tell your family members and friends that live, in and outside lagos, to vote for change, to vote for apc.
This is what this election is about; this election is about positive change. We will start from your neighbourhood. We will knock on every door. We will traverse the entire country. We will take over power at the center by the special grace of god. We are tired of transformation without motion. In their kind of transformation, the more they brag about, the less we see things transformed. And god will help us.

The story of lagos through various challenges to its emergence as the economic nerve center of Nigeria cannot be told without the mention of great patriots such as chief Obafemi Awolowo,  General Mobolaji
Johnson(rtd),  Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Mr. Babatunde Fashola, to mention a few, whose respective and remarkable contributions to the development of Lagos makes us all very proud.

Come february 2015, lagosians will once again elect a governor that will not only continue the great works of these forebearers, but will also lead the people of lagos to greater economic heights, prosperity, accountable democracy, and more importantly, the protection of lives and
properties.
I stand before you today as a bridge between the elderly and the youth. I hold before you a beacon that summons us all to building together a more prosperous lagos. I have the competence, experience and
determination to lead lagos state to greater economic heights and prosperity.

I ask for your support and your votes that will send me to alausa to continue in my tradition of selfless service to this great state of ours.

I thank you so much for coming. I thank you for your support.
