PDP Wants INEC To Declare Wada As Winner Of Kogi Governorship Election

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare its candidate, Governor Idris Wada, as the winner of the November 21 governorship election in Kogi State.

The party is also seeking the exclusion of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the supplementary election slated for December 5. The INEC had declared the election inconclusive following the cancellation of the poll in 91 units across 18 local government areas in the state.

The party’s position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its national caucus meeting held in Abuja Wednesday night.

The communiqué, signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, insisted that with the death of the APC’s candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu , during the election, the APC has legally “crashed out” of the race.

Audu had died on Sunday, while the results of the election were still being collated. He had won in 16 out of the 21 local government areas in the state and leading the PDP candidate with over 41,000 votes.

The INEC has declared the election inconclusive, citing irregularities and violence that led to the cancellation of the election in 91 polling units across 18 LGAs.

The electoral body had declared the election inconclusive and offered to conduct supplementary election in units where the election was cancelled. It had also given the APC a window to field a substitute candidate for the supplementary poll.

But the PDP condemned the INEC’s position, saying no known law or constitutional provision allowed the substituting of candidates, once the ballot process has commenced. The party has threatened to challenge INEC’s decision in court.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome Of Christ Embassy Church Faces Jail In South Africa

The South African government has threatened a jail term for Chris Oyakhilome if his church, Christ Embassy, fails to release its financial records, the South African-based News24 reports.

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities said several religious leaders in the country could be jailed if they fail to comply with the demands of the commission.

?The commission said it was investigating the commercialization of religion and abuse of people’s beliefs and had summoned several churches to appear before it with their ordination certificate, registration certificate, bank statements, and annual financial statements from 2012.

Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva said the commission had been forced to take a legal route because some of the church leaders had failed to comply with her commission’s directive.

“Some of these religious leaders will face prison if they do not comply and we have been clear about our course of action,” Mkhwanazi-Xaluva told News24.

“Some religious leaders have also threatened the commission, which is leading us towards the legal route.”

Mr. Oyakhilome, the founder of Christ Embassy, had indicated he would take a legal action to stop the commission from forcing it to open his books, according to Ms. Mkhwanazi-Xaluva.

Christ Embassy had earlier sought an extension of time to enable it review its financial records.

Ms. Mkhwanazi-Xaluva said they were also considering filing charges of intimidation against religious leaders who had publicly threatened the commission.

She wondered why some pastors would take money from their followers and, yet, refuse to provide their financial records.

“These people take money from people,” she said.

“What are they doing with that money? We want to know. We will not back down.

“?If he (Mr. Oyakhilome) intends on that route, we are ready?. He will have ?to face the same fate as the others who refuse to hand over their financial records.”

While most of the old traditional churches – including the Catholic church,? the Methodist church, the Presbyterian Church, and the Lutheran Church – had requested an extension of time; a lot of the new breed churches had threatened court action.

President Jammeh Of Gambia Bans Female Genital Mutilation

The Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh has banned female genital mutilation (FGM) saying it is not required in Islam.

The announcement at a rally was met with a huge applause, AFP reports.

Three-quarters of women in the mostly Muslim country have had the procedure, according to Unicef.

In the procedure’s most severe form, after removing the sensitive clitoris, the genitals are cut and stitched closed so that the woman cannot have or enjoy sex.

FGM, also known as female circumcision, can be extremely painful, lead to tetanus, gangrene, HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C and effective sterilisation.

The president’s announcement said the ban was effective immediately. It is not clear when a law will be passed to allow the ban to be enforced.

Nigerian Government Votes Against UN Resolution Protecting Human Rights Defenders

Nigeria has voted against a United Nations resolution supporting and protecting people who promote and defend human rights.

Samantha Jones, United States Ambassador to the United Nations made the disclosure via Twitter. Nigeria voted ‘No’ alongside Sudan, Iran, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and other countries.

See countries that voted ‘No’ pictured above..

Wikipedia information reveals that in Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force has been typically viewed as inefficient and corrupt. The Joint Task Force (JTF) has provided inadequate and violent response to the Boko Haram attacks. The JTF has been involved in killing suspects without fair trial as well as killing random members of communities expected in involvement with the Boko Haram.

This "heavy-handed" approach violates human rights with its lack of access to a fair trial and use of discriminatory techniques to determine perpetrators of violence.

Within the regular Nigerian Police Force, there are high amounts of corruption and violations that include extortion and embezzlement. The police force takes advantage of the people by putting up roadblocks that require a fee to pass and taking money for no legal reason.

Within the police force, there is no equal protection under the law. The wealthy are able to buy the police for security as well as expecting the police to turn a blind eye to illegal activities they participate in.

6 Months After, Obasanjo Congratulates Goodluck Jonathan For Handing Over To President Buhari

Almost six months after the change of government, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has for the first time congratulated former President Goodluck Jonathan for successfully handing over to President Muhammadu Buhari and commended him for continuing to have faith in Nigeria.

Jonathan had in a letter dated September 22, 2015, formally notified Obasanjo of his intention to set up a foundation to promote good works.

However, Obasanjo, in a response, wrote:

“Dear President Goodluck Jonathan,

I write to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of September 22, 2015. I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your successful handover to the current President of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I am happy to note that you had a good rest and time with your family during the break. I hope you also had time to reflect and see what lessons you have learned and what you can bequeath to others. All of us who have had experience in our service to the nation and to humanity must not put it under the bushel.

“I have to commend you and your Foundation, Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, for the faith you continue to have in Nigeria. Maybe, seeking how to be better and more serviceable to the nation and humanity is also a form of penitence and soul-searching to give conscience a relief and to show remorse.

“I wish you well as you continue to forge ahead with your activities in the coming months and years. If there is any area you feel I can be of help, you should not hesitate to call on me.”

Deputy Senate President, Ekweremadu Says Buhari Is Undermining The Nigerian Senate

Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of undermining the senate by allowing his appointees assume duty before being confirmed by the senate.

In reference to Garba Danbatta who assumed duty at the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) as the vice-chairman, prior to the confirmation of the senate, Ekweremadu warned that the upper chamber would no longer condone such act.

“The senate takes exception to undermining its powers,” he said at plenary on Thursday.

“In future appointments that require senate confirmation we believe that the president will do us the honour and give us the due respect of getting confirmation of the senate before his appointees assume duty.”

Senate president Bukola Saraki also aligned himself with the submission of Ekweremadu.

Saraki said henceforth, the senate would not condone a situation in which the president’s appointees assume duty without the confirmation.

The Senate then moved to approved the appointment of Prof. Umaru Garba Danbatta as Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, apologised to groaning Nigerians for their experienced in purchasing petrol, while it also assured that it had entered into a partnership with security agencies in the country to assist in the monitoring of fuel supply across the country.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, the Managing Director of the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company, Mrs Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue assured Nigerians that all hands are in the deck to ensure that petroleum products get across to Nigerians at the regulated price especially as the yuletide season approaches.

“We have enough products and we want to plead with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTDs) not to be involved in the diversion of petroleum products in order to avoid causing untold hardship to motorists.”

Providing insight on the role of the security agencies in curbing product diversion, Mrs Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue, said the DSS and EFCC have been mobilised to bring to book any marketer involved in sabotaging the efforts of the Federal Government and NNPC in making petroleum products available to motorists across the country.

She said: “We have invited the EFCC and DSS to join us in this campaign of monitoring the movement of petroleum products and they have our mandate to sanction any errant marketer. Enough is enough.”

She urged Nigerians and other motorists to support NNPC and desist from panic buying assuring that there are sufficient petroleum products to satisfy local consumption.

However, giving the breakdown of fuel supplied to petrol stations, the NNPC stated that Suleja, Kaduna, Kano, Minna, Gusau, Mosimi and Satelite depots dispatched 7.398 million litres, 0.937 million litres, 4.4 million litres, 0.444 million litres, 0.939 million litres, 4.351 million litres and 1.937 million litres respectively.

Roli Bode George, PDP’s Chieftain’s Wife Appointed Acting NDLEA Chairman

Mr Roli Bode George has been appointed as the first woman acting Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, following the retirement of Alhaji Ahmadu Giade who has bowed out after serving 10 years in the agency.

Mrs Bode George’s appointment is considered by observers as a significant gender balancing at a period when the Buhari administration is being leaned upon to appoint more women in the position of public relevance and reckoning.

The Chairman of Women Initiative Group (WING) Mrs Tinuade Joseph described the appointment as a good step in “redressing the gender imbalance in the recent appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari.”

George is generally perceived as an unobtrusive goal- getter and a quiet but formidable achiever, who has the requisite field training and solid academic credentials to give the NDLEA the cutting edge leadership in the crucial war against drug trafficking and substance abuse.

Late Abubakar Audu Didn’t Steal Says Senator Dino Melaye

The senator representing Kogi-West, Mr. Dino Melaye, on Wednesday, said the deceased candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the Kogi State 2015 governorship election, Prince Abubakar Audu, was innocent of the allegation of misappropriation of public funds levelled against him.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had on March 18, 2013 arraigned Audu, who was a governor of the state, before an Abuja High Court on 36 counts bordering on criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N10, 965,837,040.

Melaye, who spoke during a late show on the African Independent Television monitored by our correspondent, also described the allegations as a witch-hunt.

He said, “How can a man who received N17bn in less than four years steal N11bn? This was a man who paid pensioners, did not owe workers and carried out a big infrastructural development in the state. What has the EFCC been investigating since 2003? It is all politics. Audu never stole Kogi’s money. This was a man who built Kogi State University, Kogi State Polytechnic, Obajana Cement Factory and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dangote Cement. Audu built all the institutions that exist in the state today.”

Asked his opinion on the rumour that Audu was poisoned, Melaye said he would not say what he did not know.

Melaye added, ‘‘I cannot say he was poisoned. I will not say what I do not know. God is the only one who sees everything. I can only weep. For him, it was the end of a cycle.’’

According to him, the majority of politicians in Kogi are too elitist.

He said, “Audu was the only politician who was down to earth in Kogi State. I was his closest political associate. He loved his people. He was a friend of the downtrodden. It will be difficult for any other governor to connect with the people like Audu did. A man who was ready to listen to bean cake sellers and cobblers was a man to be taken seriously.’’

Supporters Of Late Audu’s Running-mate, Falake Threatening To Sue INEC And APC

Supporters of the Kogi State deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), James Faleke, have threatened to sue the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for declaring last Saturday’s election inconclusive.

They rose from a meeting yesterday in Lokoja, the state capital, accusing INEC of ambushing the people’s will by declaring inconclusive an election that had produced a clear winner.

Their spokesmen, Messrs Achama Matthew and Mohammed Abdulahi, said the fresh primaries being proposed by the APC to fill the vacuum created by the sudden death of the party’s standard bearer, Prince Abubakar Audu, was unnecessary.

A communique signed by Matthew and Abdulahi noted that last Saturday’s election was conclusive and won by the Audu/Faleke ticket.

They said only 32,785 of the 49,953 registered voters in the area where INEC scheduled to hold the December 5 supplementary election had the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The communiqué reads: “INEC should be courageous to declare Audu/Faleke as the winner of the election. With 240,867 votes, Audu was leading his closest rival and incumbent Governor Idris Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with 41,353 votes, having polled 199,514 votes.

Nigerian Army Quietly Buries 105 Dead Soldiers In Maiduguri Earlier Reported To Have Been Missing

The Nigerian Army Tuesday quietly buried several soldiers at the military cemetery in Maiduguri. The Soldiers, THISDAY gathered, are believe to be the 105 Battalion during a fierce gun battle with Nigerian Troops at Gudun-bali, Borno State last week.

“Gudunbali was attacked this morning and some weapons were captured from the battalion. Two officers and 105 soldiers are still missing,” the platform sources had informed PREMIUM TIMES. The Nigerian military has claimed series of victories over the militants in recent weeks. On Monday, the army claimed that it captured and destroyed a factory where the group makes rockets and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

A Military source in Maiduguri said bodies of the men were brought to “Maiduguri Monday evening”. The Military authorities, in an attempt to keep the news away from the Public, had denied that soldiers were killed or missing, describing the report as a “fabrication of the imagination of those sympathetic to Boko Haram ways.

The Army Spokesman in Maiduguri, Colonel Tukur Ismail Gusau, had said Boko Haram attacked the location of the 157 Battalion, but they were “subsequently repelled by the gallant troops of the unit” adding that the unit’s commanding officer remained in contact with his Brigade.

The terrorists were reported to have captured a T-72 Tank in the attack as well as several military artillery weapons . The source who confirmed the burial of the 105 missing soldiers yesterday said about 34 men of the 118 Battalion were also killed by the insurgents last week.

“These deaths marks a low point in the war against the terrorists”, the source stated.

But Col. Usman informed THISDAY that the burial that took place was not that of the purported 105 dead or mission soldiers. He stated that burial of the soldiers close to the theatre of war was a routine military procedure..

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Former Minister of Aviation, Olufemi Fani-Kayode, has taken a swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari, the Minister of Defence, Rtd Brig. Gen. Mansur Mohammed Dan Ali and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai over the alleged ‘secret burial’ of soldiers killed by Boko Haram insurgents.

“The most reprehensible thing that our government can do is to cover-up the fact that 105 of our soldiers were killed by Boko Haram in battle. It is evil”.

“A soldier ought to be honored in death and this is especially so if he dies in the course of doing his duty and fighting for his nation”.

“The government has not only dishonored them by not acknowledging their sacrifice but they have also buried them in the wilderness like rabid dogs”

“This is wickedness of the highest order and Pres. Buhari, his Chief of Army Staff and his Min. of Defence should bury their heads in shame”.

“I am outraged by the fact that a soldier will sacrifice his life for his country yet the citizens of that country don’t even appreciate it,” he posted on his Twitter Handle.

Abubakar Audu’s Supporters Push For Son As Replacement Ahead Of Kogi Supplementary Election

The deceased had polled 240,867 votes in the election while the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate and incumbent state Governor, Capt. Idris Wada (retd.), scored 199,514 votes, leaving a gap of 41,353 votes between the two leading candidates in the election.

INEC had declared the election inconclusive on the grounds that cancelled votes or registered voters in the 91 polling units, where the exercise did not take place were 49,953, a figure higher than Audu’s lead of 41,353 votes.

A leader of the APC in the state, who confided in The PUNCH, said the dominant view in the organisation was that Mohammed should join the race.

It was gathered that a few members of the group had also suggested that Audu’s running mate in last Saturday’s election, Mr. James Faleke, should contest the primary.

It was gathered that members of the group, which dominates the APC in the state, met on Tuesday night following the party’s declaration that another primary would be held to produce a replacement for the late governorship candidate.

The commission had on Tuesday written the APC, directing it to submit a replacement for the late Audu while the party said it would hold a fresh primary to produce a replacement for the deceased APC standard bearer.

There were strong indications on Wednesday that the campaign organisation of the late Kogi State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Abubakar Audu, was preparing a ground for the emergence of the deceased’s son, Mohammed, as a replacement for his father.

Audu died on Sunday, a few hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the November 21 governorship poll in the state inconclusive. The APC leader, who confided in The PUNCH, said the late Audu’s political structure was still intact despite his death.

He stated that nobody could win the state governorship primary of the APC without the backing of Audu’s supporters.

The source said, “Abubakar Audu’s supporters, including his campaign structure, are rooting for either Audu’s son, Mohammed, or James Faleke for them not to lose out entirely. They are narrowing it to either Faleke or Mohammed because the APC machinery believes that the election has been won. But the party elders and leaders, who worked for him, will be more comfortable with Mohammed.

The spokesperson for the APC in Kogi State, Abdulmalik Suleiman, said, “We are mourning. This is the time for sober reflection and we are praying for our late leader and icon. At the appropriate time, the public will know because APC has a way of solving its issues and problems.”

One of our correspondents, however, learnt that despite the state of mourning in the party in the state, no fewer than four aspirants have started jostling to emerge as a replacement for Audu in the supplementary election on December 5.

These aspirants, it was learnt, included Faleke, who was Audu’s running mate in last Saturday’s poll; Yahaya Bello; a former PDP governorship aspirant, Jubrin Echocho, and Salihu Atawodi.

While Faleke is from the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi West Senatorial District, Bello is from Okene in Kogi Central.

Echocho, who defected from the PDP to the APC after failing to clinch the governorship ticket of the former, is from Dekina LGA in Kogi East Senatorial District, the same zone as the incumbent governor, Wada.

Atawodi is from Dekina LGA and contested against Audu during the APC governorship primary.

Meanwhile, a former Governor of Cross River State, Chief Clement Ebri, has called on the national leadership of the APC to consider fielding one of the children of the late Audu as a replacement.

In an interview with our correspondent in Calabar on Wednesday, Ebri, who was the governor of the state between 1992 and 1993, said the late APC candidate in the November 21 inconclusive governorship election was fortunate to have adult children, who were capable of filling the vacuum created by Audu’s demise.

Ebri said, “I agree that this is a democracy and not a monarchy; but to my knowledge, more than one of the late Audu’s children have the capacity to take up the ticket. I have seen them and I know them to have the capacity. So, why the party is still thinking of what to do, here is a suggestion – put another Audu in there.

“In 1991, when we were running our elections, Dr. Joe Nwodo was disqualified and the party got his younger brother to replace him. That was Ekwezelieze Nwodo, who did a great job.

“I am sure that the circumstance we have today dictates that we even consider that. By that way, the labour of the late Audu, who had never given up and had sacrificed for his people, will not be in vain.”
