‘Fake news has caused depression, ruined homes’ – Lai Mohammed

0

Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed has spoken on the need for Nigerian media houses to have fact-checking desks, citing the adverse effects of fake news.

The minister warned that fake news generates not only dangerous consequences for the country but it also affects interpersonal relationship among the citizenry.

He stated this on Tuesday when he received a delegation from The Guardian Newspaper in Abuja.

According to the minister, fact-checking will address the menace of fake news and help separate facts from fiction.

“To be sure, the issue of fake news and misinformation is not just about the government alone, as some have insinuated. It is about all of us,” he said.

“Fake news has ruined homes, pushed many into depression and done untold hardship to others. It is a clear and present danger to all.

“I believe it will not be out of place for reputable media organisations like the Guardian to set up a special desk for fact-checking as a panacea for this problem.

“That way, you can help citizens to separate fact from fiction. I am aware that some media organizations are already doing this, but it must be taken seriously by every media establishment.

“On our part, we are undeterred as we have continued our engagement with stakeholders to find a way out. Hopefully, we will be taking a more concrete step on this in the months ahead.”

The minister said no democracy could survive without independent media.

“As a matter of fact, no true democracy survives without a professional, responsible and independent media. It is in this context that the government continues to view the media as a strong partner,” he said.

“It is said that for the media to be able to play its role, which is to inform, criticize and stimulate debate, it must take responsibility for whatever it must get its facts right.

“But can we say today that most of what we read, hear and watch in the news are factual?”

COVID-19: ‘96% of the targeted population have been vaccinated’ – Federal Government

0

The federal government says a total of 1,929,237 Nigerians representing 96 percent of the targeted population have received the first COVID-19 vaccine doses.

The Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, said this Tuesday, at a press conference held in Abuja, to update Nigerians on the status of COVID-19 vaccination in the country.

“We have now provided first COVID-19 vaccine doses to a total number of 1,929,237 Nigerians, representing 96% of the targeted population. In addition, we have begun providing second doses, and that number has reached 4,683. The Federal Government is taking significant precautions to protect Nigerians against B.1.617.2, known as the Indian variant,” he said.

“Flights from India and other high-risk countries such as Turkey and Brazil have been barred from entering Nigeria, we are ramping up our test and trace measures, and we are accelerating the national project to establish production of oxygen supplies across all states of Nigeria.”

“We are advising that all Nigerians who have received their first dose should check their vaccination cards for the date of their second dose, and ensure that they receive the second dose to gain full protection against COVID-19,” the NPHCDA’s boss advised.

Shuaib said the government’s “teams have assessed the communication and mobilization activities that have been undertaken thus far to create awareness for the COVID-19 vaccine and encourage uptake.” “We will be building on the work we’ve already done in these areas to ensure that Nigerians can easily access accurate information about COVID-19 vaccination.

Our goal is to do everything possible to educate, combat misinformation, and ensure confidence in the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, and to ensure all Nigerians have clear information on how, where, and when to get the vaccine. We will do this through continuous engagement and communication with communities across our country,” added.

Abducted FUNAAB student regains freedom

The 400-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Olayinka Toyinbo, and two others abducted on Saturday by suspected kidnappers, have regained freedom.

FUNAAB’s Head, Directorate of Public Relations, Kola Adepoju, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Tuesday.

He said that Toyinbo was released by his abductors on Monday night unharmed, safe and sound.

Adepoju said that Toyinbo’s release had thrown the entire university community and particularly the students, who had, in the early hours of Monday, staged a peaceful protest, into frenzy.

Adepoju, however, hinted that details of the student’s release were still sketchy and within the purview of the state police command.

“The management of the university, on behalf of the entire academic community, is deeply grateful to security agencies, both the conventional and the unconventional.

“We are particularly grateful to the state police command, the media, traditional rulers, other stakeholders and the public in general for their concern and efforts which culminated in the freedom of our student,” he said.

The Police Spokesman in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi , confirmed Toyinbo’s release in a telephone interview, adding that he and others had been reunited with their families.

“Police operatives had been in the forest for those three days. The student and the two others were released yesterday night (Monday) and they have all been reunited with their families,” he said.

NAN reports that students of the institution had, on Monday, taken to the streets to protest the kidnap of their colleague.

The placard-carrying students took their protest to the state secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abeokuta.

NAN reports that Toyinbo was, on Saturday, kidnapped by suspected gunmen at a private farm in Abule-Itoko, Odeda Local Government Area, about 25 minutes drive from the institution, around 8 am.

A friend of the abducted student, who claimed to have witnessed the scene, said Toyinbo was kidnapped by the gunmen at the private farm, where he had been living and working as a practising livestock farmer for the past three years.

Other sources, however, said that the two other persons reportedly kidnapped alongside the student were the owner of the farm and a 17-year-old Togolese lady.

Lagos Lawmakers oppose bill to scrap Public Office Holder Pensions

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday opposed the total scrapping of the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which ensures payment of pensions and other benefits to former Governors and their deputies.

A bill that seeks to repeal the law had passed second reading at the state house of assembly on Monday.

The new bill which was debated on the floor of the House at a sitting presided over by the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, is titled ‘A bill for a law to repeal the law to provide for the payment of pensions and other fringe benefits to public office holders in Lagos State and for other connected matters’.

The lawmakers argued that it would not be too good to repeal the law in its entirety, as there were some important sections and stipulations that should be considered.

Speaking concerning the bill, Oluyinka Ogundimu (Agege 2), explained that the bill is to ensure the stoppage of pensions to governors and deputies when they leave office adding that this decision was in consideration of the country’s current economic challenges.

Ogundimu argued that the governors and their deputies and other such political office holders should be made to enjoy some benefits no matter how little.

He also argued that they should amend the bill in such a way that it would not throw former political officers to security challenges since if they repealed the original law, it would mean withdrawing all security agents and domestic staff earlier attached to them.

Another lawmaker, Rotimi Abiru (Shomolu 2), said he supports an amendment to the law instead of repeal.
“For a person who has served as chief executive of a state, I do not think it is nice denying them of their benefits.

“I can appreciate that some of them move to other appointments. For these people, there can be a caveat. But for those who serve in that capacity and do not have any other thing to do after office, it may not be something elaborate, but something may be coming to them periodically,” he said.

The lawmaker representing Epe Constituency 1, Tobun Abiodun, said he does not subscribe to a total repeal of the law because it would give room to corruption in office.

He said provisions should be made available to governors, deputies and possibly speakers after they leave office.

Other lawmakers who supported the amendment to the law include Jude Idimogu (Oshodi-Isolo 2), Saad Olumo (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1) and Abdulsobur Olawale (Mushin 2).

“The index case was a 37-year old housewife who presented at Burra General Hospital on 24th April 2021. She complained of abdominal pains, watery diarrhoea and vomiting, she and others were successfully managed and discharged home.”

He said that the Ministry through the Primary Health Care Development Agency responded immediately to prevent the spread to other communities adding that it was discovered that there was an ongoing outbreak of similar diseases in neighbouring Sumaila and other LGAs of Kano State.

‘Open grazing ban: Garba Shehu must disclose the real motives of those he serves’ – Akeredolu

0

The Chairperson of the Southern Governors Forum, Rotimi Akeredolu has slammed the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu over a Monday statement challenging the legality of the open grazing ban by the southern governors.

Mr Akeredolu who is the Ondo State governor also accused Shehu of working for “extraneous interests.”

The disagreement is over the resolution of the southern regions to ban open grazing in their states as a means to end herders-farmers clashes and the presidency’s opposing statements to the ban.

In a statement on Monday, Garba Shehu accused the southern leaders of politicking with the ban on open grazing and claimed the resolution did not proffer practicable solution to the herders-farmers conflict that has caused deaths and wrecked properties.

Shehu further claimed that the President had earlier approved measures to bring an end to the insurgency as advised by Sabo Nanono, the Minister of Agriculture in April.

“The President had approved a number of specific measures to bring a permanent end to the frequent skirmishes as recommended by Alhaji Sabo Nanono, the Minister of Agriculture in a report he submitted and the President signed off on it back in April, well before the actions of the Southern Governors Forum which attempts to place a ban on open grazing and other acts of politicking intended by its signatories to demonstrate their power,” Shehu had said in the statement.

“It is very clear that there was no solution offered from their resolutions to the herder-farmer clashes that have been continuing in our country for generations.”

Reacting to the presidency’s statement on Tuesday, Akeredolu accused Garba Shehu of creating confusion in the polity by his utterances.

The statement titled “Mr Garba Shehu; On the Trail of An Agent Provocateur” was issued by his Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties and Strategy, Dr Doyin Odebowale in Akure, Ondo State.

The statement partly read, “Anyone who has been following the utterances of this man, as well as his fellow travelers on the self-deluding, mendacious but potentially dangerous itinerary to anarchy cannot but conclude that he works, assiduously, for extraneous interests whose game plan stands at variance with the expectations of genuine lovers of peaceful coexistence among all the peoples whose ethnic extractions are indigenous to Nigeria.

“Mr Garba must disclose, this day, the real motive(s) of those he serves, definitely not the President. He cannot continue to hide under some opaque, omnibus and dubious directives to create confusion in the polity. The easy recourse to mendacious uppity in pushing a barely disguised pernicious agendum is well understood.

The statement further lambasted the reference to Nanono’s recommendation and the Minister Nanono like Shehu is a political appointee and he doesn’t have the weight of elected governors.

Akeredolu said, “The declaration that the recommendations of the Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Sabo Nanono, a mere political appointee like Garba Shehu, are now the “lasting solutions” which eluded all the elected representatives of the people of the Southern part of the country, exposes this man as a pitiable messenger who does not seem to understand the limits of his relevance and charge.

“Mr Garba contends that “their announcement is of questionable legality”, referring to the 17 Governors of the Southern States, but the decision of certain elements to take the ancestral lands of other people to settle their kinsmen, including the “gun-wielding “killer herdsmen” and their families, and provide “veterinary clinics, water points for animals, and facilities for herders and their families including schooling through these rehabilitated reserves” for which “the Federal Government is making far-reaching and practical changes allowing for different communities to co-exist side-by-side”, does not appear to him as a comprehensive plan for land grabbing, a precursor to internal colonialism. He wants to “revive forest reserves” but seems particularly uninterested in the current position of the same law, that he and his cohorts often misinterpret to serve parochialism and greed.

Governors no longer have powers over the lands in their territories. They must take instructions from appointees of the Federal Government on such matters.” The statement read.

Lagos to spend 11billion on school feeding programme

The Lagos State Government has revealed plans to launch an N11 billion budgeted school feeding programme.

Special Adviser of the Office of Civic Engagement, Princess Aderemi Adebowale, stated this on Monday during a press briefing celebrating the second-year anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Adebowale, the school feeding called, Snacks for Thought programme would complement the efforts of the home-grown school feeding programme of the Federal Government which serves only pupils from primary one to primary three.

She said, “The programme will cost the government N11bn. We are going to partner organisation on this. We already have over 400 volunteers that will work with us.”

Adebowale noted that the feeding programme was necessary to reduce the out-of-school children in Lagos State in which a report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) put at 229,264 in 2018.

“In order to curb this rising numbers, we need more than statutory allocations. Intervention such as this will increase the rate of enrolment in schools and serve as a preventive security measure in reducing crime and hooliganism that may later on disrupt the socio-economic life of the state.”

The Federal Government’s National Home Grown School Feeding Programme is a government-led programme that aims to improve the health and educational outcomes of public primary school pupils. It uses farm produce locally grown by smallholder farmers to provide children with nutritious mid-day meals on every school day.
