Gunmen have kidnapped two people from their houses in Abuja

Gunmen have kidnapped two people from their houses in Byazhin, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The armed men, who stormed the hilly area close to the Lottery Quarters and few metres away from Living Faith Church at Byazhin in Kubwa, abducted a man identified as Ayodele Somorin, before they whisked away his neighbour, Oladimeji Josiah.

A resident, who simply identified himself as Segun, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Wednesday.

He said the men, who were abducted about five days ago, were still at the kidnappers’ den.

“Last week Friday, the gunmen were in this area around 11:45pm. Although I went for a church vigil, my wife and children were at home.

“My wife said earlier before the attack, she saw two people around a neighbour’s house through the window but she thought they were residents who were trying to store the rain water because it showered that night.

“However, after they broke into the first house and took away Somorin, they went to the second house where they shot sporadically before kidnapping Mr Josiah.

“When they entered the third house, unfortunately for them, nobody was at home but they upturned everything in the house in their search,” Mr Segun narrated.

He said though the kidnappers did not enter his house, his wife was yet to recover from the shock as one of the bullets entered his house through one of his windows.

MURIC calls on OAU to investigate abuse of hijab wearing female student

An Islamic organisation, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, to investigate the alleged abuse of a female Muslim student in the OAU International school.

MURIC’s made the request in a press statement issued by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Wednesday, 26th May, 2021.

According to MURIC, the girl was unfairly treated and her father has removed her from the school in protest.

MURIC said, “One of the teachers of the Obafemi Awolowo International School (OAUIS), Mrs. Adeyemo, has allegedly harassed a female Muslim student of the school. The intimidation has made the girl’s parents to withdraw her from the school.

“The girl who was in the habit of using her hijab from home and removing it at the school’s gate (since hijab is not allowed by the school’s authorities) was harassed by Mrs. Adeyemo. Although the girl had removed her hijab as usual at the school’s gate, the teacher still confronted her after she entered the school claiming that she had seen the girl in hijab within the university premises. She gave the girl a totally contemptuous wash down that the latter wept profusely.”MURIC wrote.

“The parents reportedly came to the school in protest. They argued that their daughter had not violated any of the school’s rules because the girl had removed her hijab before entering the school’s premises. The school authority allegedly argued that it was against the school’s policy for any female student to wear hijab on her uniform anywhere at all and that OAU campus was part andparcel of the school’s premises. Consequently, the girl’s father withdrew his daughter out of frustration.”

MURIC also said the incident in a dent on the secondary school and the university’s image.

The Islamic organisation urged the Psychology Department of the Faculty of Education in OAU to do a work on the mentality of some of the teachers in its international school.

He continued, “MURIC is greatly amused by this ugly development. As far as the school authorities are concerned, they see this as a win-win situation. On the contrary, it is a dent on the school’s image. We find it interesting that an international school within the premises of an ivory tower will encourage child abuse of such highlevel. It is quite nauseating.

“Or do we need a lawyer from outside OAU to explain the implications of what the authorities of OAUIS has done to a little girl? OAUIS has locked out a girlchild from its premises. A girl child has been denied access to education on account of a small head scarf at a time the whole world is clamouring for education for the same girl child. It is child abuse of high level magnitude.

“Worsestill, the Psychology Department of the Faculty of Education in OAU needs to work on the mentality of some of the teachers in its international school before further damage is done. Are they aware of the damage done by Mrs.Adeyemo to the psyche of the female Muslim student who was harassed by her andon account of which the girl lost her studentship?

“Records show that a number of students treated with disdain by their teachers have been known to go into a state of despondency. Many of them become melancholy, incommunicado, drooling all day long. They get detached from all types of academic work. Depressionsets in. They also have high propensity for suicide if no urgent steps aretaken to reset their pshyche and many are known to have committed suicide onaccount of tongue-lashing by insensitive teachers.

The statement further lambasted the school’s decision to ban the use of hijabs in school. It said although the Muslim students are allowed to perform prayers in the school, ban on hijab dwarfs the positive effects of such privilege.

Akintola then challenged the legality of banning hijabs in southern region while the Muslim students in northern Nigeria are overwhelming allowed to wear hijabs.

He said, “We must place on record the fact that the Muslim students in OAUIS are allowed to observe their Salat (prayer)in the school and Islamic Religious Knowledge is also taught there. Credit for this goes to both the OAU Muslim community and the school authorities. But the refusal to allow female Muslim students to don hijab dwarfs all these.

“Our position is based on the fact that fundamental human rights have always been whole, not partial. Whoever grants some civil liberties only to withhold some has granted no rights at all. It is like givingsomebody gold with one hand and using the other to take it back. It is either you recognize all civil rights or you deny all. There is no middle way in Allah-given fundamental human rights. They are not even yours to give in thefirst place. They are from Allah. That is why we call them Allah-given rights.

“The Argument that the use of hijab violates the school’s rules does not hold any weight we. The Nigerian Constitution grants religious freedom, including freedom touse hijab. It is important to note that the Constitution is the font etorigo and any rule, regulation or law of any local or state government, agency or institution that contravenes any clause therein remains null, voidand ultra vires. To that extent, therefore, no school within the countryby whatever nomenclature it is called has the power to declare illegal thehijab which the Nigerian Constitution authoritatively makes legitimate.

“This is another example of the persecution of Muslim children in the hands of overzealous and intolerant Christian civil servants and teachers in the SouthWest. It is interesting that Mrs. Adeyemo bears a Yoruba name. The female Muslim student is also a Yoruba girl. Will Yoruba Muslims not face worse persecution in the hands of Christians if the Yorubas eventually succeed intheir plan to secede? Will Muslims be safe at that time when they are not safeeven now? Will the Muslims of Yorubaland enjoy any religious freedom if theproposed Oduduwa Republic becomes a reality?

“The interesting thing is that Muslims only suffer like this in the southern part of Nigeria. They enjoy their Allah-given fundamental human rights in the whole North. Yet Nigeria has just one constitution, not two, not three. Why then should hijab be legitimate in Northern schools but ‘illegitimate’ in Yorubaland?”

Sports minister says Nigeria is committed to sustaining the National Youth Service Corps amid calls for the scheme to be scrapped

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, says the Federal Government is committed to sustaining the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), amid calls for the scheme to be scrapped.

Dare made the assertion in a tweet on his handle on Wednesday morning, praising the NYSC for its contribution to national development.

“The NYSC scheme remains one of the greatest tools for National development for our youth,” the minister explained. “The commitment of the government to sustaining the NYSC scheme remains. Dynamic Reforms and Initiatives towards current realities are ongoing. Nigeria will stand with her youth.”

During a plenary session on Monday, Abiante who represents Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency decried that several reform efforts have also not yielded desired results.

He argued that the NYSC has continued to be a drain on the nation’s scarce resources and exposed families to several nightmares, and even the loss of loved ones after so much investment.

“Due to insecurity across the country, the National Youth Service Corps Management now give considerations to posting corps members to their geo-political zone, thus defeating one of the objectives of setting up the service corps i.e. developing common ties among the Nigerian youths and promote national unity and integration,” the lawmaker said.

“Many corps members are being used by their employers for jobs that have no bearing on the skills acquired at institutions of higher learning, thus making them unemployable after their service year.”

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a program set up by the Nigerian government to involve Nigerian graduates in nation building and the development of the country.

There is no military conscription in Nigeria, but since 1973 graduates of universities and later polytechnics have been required to take part in the National Youth Service Corps program for one year – his is known as national service year.

NYSC was created on 22 May 1973 as an avenue for the reconciliation, reconstruction, and rebuilding of the nation after the civil war. It was established based on decree No. 24 that stated that the scheme was created “with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity“.

Garba Shehu says the President’s dislike for the closure of roads could be the reason for his absence at Ibrahim Attahiru’s funeral

0

The presidency seems to have finally hinted on why Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari was absent at the funeral of Ibrahim Attahiru, deceased chief of army staff, and 10 other military officers who died in an air crash.

Attahiru, a lieutenant general, and 10 other officers were laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja on Saturday, a day after they died in a military plane crash.

They died in the crash that occurred in Kaduna on Friday while on official assignment to Zaria in Kaduna State – They were travelling to the Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria for the passing out parade of regular recruits slated for Saturday.

Garba Shehu, Buhari’s spokesman, in an Arise TV programme on Tuesday said the president does not like “this idea of closing roads, security men molesting people on the road” whenever he is out for an event outside Aso Rock.

The Islamic funeral service was held at the National Mosque, Abuja for the late army chief and five others who were Muslims while the Christian funeral services burial rites were held at the Nigerian Air Force Protestant Church, Abuja for the officers who were Christians.

The Presidential Villa Abuja is less than a 5 minutes drive to the National Mosque Abuja where the Prayers initially funeral had held, the President has come under criticisms from Nigerians mostly on social media for failing to show up at the funeral of the Army chief and other officers who died in the plane crash in Kaduna.

When asked to speak on the matter during an Arise TV programme on Tuesday, Shehu said although he has not spoken with Buhari on the matter, the president’s dislike for the closure of roads could be the reason for his action.

He said: “I was in Europe myself on assignment and I have not spoken to the president on this but let me give you just one example: The president is somebody who is so concerned about the safety and wellbeing of ordinary Nigerians on the streets.Advertisement

“Do you know why he now prays his Jumaat in the state house and doesn’t go to the national mosque? Because he doesn’t like this idea of closing roads, security men molesting people on the road for the president to have the right of way.

“These are small things for many people but they are important for President Muhammadu Buhari. So, it is a mourning situation and the president didn’t want to take away attention from that.”

After the criticisms, President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday declared three days mourning for the late Chief of Arny Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in the crash of a military plane in Kaduna on Friday, with some other military officers. The late COAS, Attahiru, and 10 other officers who died in the military plane crash in Kaduna were committed to the mother earth on Saturday at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, in a statement on Sunday, indicated that President Buhari has directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast in all public buildings, facilities, and official residence across the country. He added that the directive is with effect from Monday to Wednesday.

The SGF explained that the presidential directive was to honour the memory and services of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, as well as the senior military officers and service members who died in a plane crash on Friday.

Kano State Hisbah confiscates 8,400 bottles of beer worth millions

0

The Kano State Hisbah Board says it has confiscated 8,400 bottles of beer in Dawakin Kudu and Kura Local Government Areas.

The Commander-General of the board, Dr. Harun Ibn-Sina, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen on Tuesday in Kano.

According to the statement “the vehicle was coming from Zaria to Kano when Hisbah officials arrested the driver.

“Hisbah Board has prohibited the sale of beer in the state to avoid being intoxicated”, he said.

The Commander-General also said that once investigation was concluded, the suspects would be charged to court.

The Kano State Hisbah Corps was established by the state government in 2003 with the institutionalization of formerly local and privately maintained hisbah security units.  Hisbah, which is an Arabic word meaning an act performed for the good of the society, is an Islamic religious concept that calls for “enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong on every Muslim.”

The Hisbah Corps, which operates under the jurisdiction of a Hisbah Board composed of government officials, secular police officers, and religious leaders, is highly decentralized with local units supervised by committees composed of officials and citizens in the communities in which they operate.

The relationship between the Hisbah Corps and civil police has been sometimes acrimonious. The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), to whom the Hisbah must report crimes, frequently refuse to cooperate in enforcement of religious law.

On multiple occasions, NPF officers have arrested Hisbah members for trespassing when the latter have attempted to enter private property to enforce Sharia.

Officer accidentally detonated a grenade – Police say Ebonyi blast wasn’t suicide bomb

0

A policeman died on Tuesday after mistakenly detonating a grenade in Ebonyi State, authorities confirmed to newsmen.

This is according to the spokesperson of the Ebonyi State Police Command, Loveth Odah who stated this during a briefing in Abakaliki.

She identified the police personnel as Idi Aminu, noting that the victim was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“He mistakenly hit the lead of his grenade which was hanging on his waist with his elbow, resulting in the deadly explosion,” Ms Odah said. The spokesperson said the remains of the police operative have been taken to a mortuary.

The police reaction comes amid reports that a suicide bomber was blown to pieces after a suicide vest he was wearing exploded on his body.

The incident was said to have happened in Afikpo town of Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state – resident scampered for safety when the grenade exploded but reconvened at the scene of the incident a few minutes after only to discover the suspected suicide bomber laying dead in the pull of his own blood.

But the police spokesman debunked the reports, saying the victim was personnel of the State Police Command.
