#TwitterBan: Nigerian Online media platforms host joint conference on #TwitterSpaces

As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day on the 12th of June, a coalition of independent online media have announced a joint conference to discuss digital media rights and freedoms across the country.

The conference tagged; ‘A conversation about Nigeria’s shrinking media and civic spaces’ is following the recent suspension of Twitter services by the Federal Government of Nigeria on 4 June 2021 and the directive that all social media platforms and online broadcasting service providers operating in Nigeria apply for broadcast licence with the National Broadcasting Commission.

In a joint media statement on Friday, the media organisations said “the shutdown of social media platforms and subsequent forced regulations, violate the right to freedom of expression and access to information, contrary to Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

A truly democratic society depends on citizens being able to hold informed opinions and express them – both in voting booths and in their day-to-day lives.  It’s important that people are able to ask questions of the people in power and debate decisions which affect them and their fellow citizens.

A Free and independent media is society’s greatest ally in  achieving this.”

The joint conference which will be hosted on Twitter Spaces, will hold on Saturday June 12, 2021 at 2pm.
The conference will feature independent journalists, traditional and new media platforms, civil society representatives and other stakeholders.

The Kaduna State Government has confirmed the kidnapping of students and lecturers of the state-owned Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic in Zaria.

According to a statement by the Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Homeland Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, who visited the school, some students are still missing.

“The Kaduna State government has been briefed by security agencies of an attack by armed bandits at the main campus of the Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria, late on Thursday night.

“According to the briefing, the bandits invaded the staff quarters of the campus, shooting sporadically. In the process, two students were hit and sustained gunshot injuries. They were identified as: – Ahmad Muhammad, – Haruna Isyaku Duniya.

“They were rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Sadly, Ahmad Muhammad succumbed to his wounds and died early this morning. Haruna Isyaku Duniya is still receiving treatment.

“Two lecturers and about eight students were abducted from the institution during the attack.

“Governor Nasir El-Rufai received the briefing with sadness and prayed for the repose of the soul of the student killed, while sending condolences to his family. He wished the injured student a speedy recovery.

“As at the time of this update, senior government officials and security agencies are conducting security assessments and interfacing with the management and students of the institution,” Mr Aruwan said.

‘Buhari’s APC, Lagos comment wasn’t referring to Tinubu’ – Presidency says

0

Presidency Spokesman, Garba Shehu says President Muhammadu Buhari wasn’t referring to the APC National Chairman Bola Tinubu when he said that a person cannot sit in Lagos and decide for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released late Thursday, Garba Shehu, said the spin and interpretation of an otherwise innocuous remark, is malicious and mischievous all at once.

“The presidency wishes to distance President Buhari from a malicious campaign aiming to drive a wedge between him and a staunch ally, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“This is nothing short of a mischievous attempt to drag the President into controversies. Our citizens and especially the members of the APC should not fall for this.

“The ruling party, the APC, unlike others before it is a popular political party owned by its entire membership, hence Mr. President was making the point during the 45-minutes interview that neither he nor anyone in the leadership could impose their wishes on the party.

“This is a basic consensus that binds the entire party leadership. The party leaders remain firmly committed to the principles that succession must be through democratic norms and processes.

“The mention he made of Lagos was not a reference to the respected party leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, as the opposition party’s predatory designs would put it in order to damage the excellent relationship between the two of them.

“The President, the Asiwaju and the rapidly growing members of the party want a dynastic succession of elected leaders.

“The APC should not be distracted from its progress as a democratic party,” Shehu’s statement reads.

Tinubu, 69, is widely believed to be nursing a presidential ambition ahead of the 2023 general elections.

NUJ condemns Police attack on PUNCH journalist

The Nigeria Union of journalists, on Thursday, condemned the attack on a Chief Correspondent with Punch Nigeria Limited, Friday Olokor, by a combined team of security operatives from the Department of State Services and the police, describing it as reprehensible.

The Chairman, Federal Capital Territory Council, NUJ, Emmanuel Ogbeche, in a statement, frowned on “the low-life conduct of the officers and personnel in question.”

He said, “The NUJ FCT finds it reprehensible and frowns on the low-life conduct of the officers and personnel in question.

“The idea that any policeman and DSS operative will lay their hands on any journalist as was the unfortunate case of Friday Olokor speaks to why Nigeria ranks poorly in the Freedom Index.

“The NUJ will pursue this matter and hopes that those found wanting in this despicable act are brought to justice.

“It seems there is now a state policy targeting the media and journalists in this country. There is the urgency for all well-meaning Nigerians to not only condemn this travesty, but all assault on the right to freedom of expression and of the media.”

Olokor was on Thursday beaten and handcuffed by the DSS and police personnel at the popular M & M Events Centre, beside NICON Luxury, where he went to cover the ongoing African Women Conference organised by the dRPC under the Ford Foundation.

His colleague from Leadership Newspapers, Patience Ihejirika, was not spared.

The DSS operatives seized her telephone and deleted some vital videos to ensure that she did not record the assault on Olokor.

A police officer at the scene also threatened to beat her up if she did not surrender her phone.

Olokor said he ran into trouble when he introduced himself as a journalist.

He said, “We were invited to cover a panel discussion at the ongoing African Council of Women Conference with the theme: ‘Factors and Driver of Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria’, organised by the dRPC under the Ford Foundation.

“I drove to the venue, the M & M Events Centre, Abuja, close to NICON Luxury, in the Central Business District. After introducing myself, a riot policeman stopped me at the gate and said I should get an entrance tag. I told him I could only get the tag from the organisers and couldn’t get it unless I drove in. He refused and I had to call Patience Ihejirika of the Leadership Newspapers, who brought my tag.

“Yet, the policeman was complaining that journalists were the problem of Nigeria. I turned and asked him why security agents hated journalists. He started abusing me and said if not that he was in uniform, he would have taught me a big lesson. He said, ‘Look, I don’t fear journalists’. He said I wasn’t going to enter the venue. I told him that since I had been cleared, I needed to go in because the event had started. He stopped me from entering the venue.

“It was during this time that the DSS operatives pounced on me and tore my shirt. They were joined by policemen, who were all armed. They said I should sit down, but I stood up. I was handcuffed. They seized Patience Ihejirika’s phone and deleted the videos and photos of the incident, while one of the police officers threatened to beat her up.

“I called a senior DSS officer, who happened to be my friend right from school. Even when he tried to speak with them, they refused. ‘Tell him we’re not talking to him’, one of them said.

“An Assistant Director of the DSS later called to apologise to me with a promise that the personnel involved would be summoned to write a report about what transpired.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja branch, has called for disciplinary measures against personnel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the alleged attack on the Chairman of the Makurdi branch of the body, Justin Gbagir.

“ An Assistant Director of the DSS later called to apologise to me with a promise that the personnel involved would be summoned to write a report about what transpired.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja branch, has called for disciplinary measures against personnel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the alleged attack on the Chairman of the Makurdi branch of the body, Justin Gbagir.

Gbagir had on Wednesday alleged that he was beaten up by operatives of the EFCC in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

However, the EFCC denied the allegation.

In a statement issued by the Secretary of the NBA, Abuja branch, Prince Adetosoye, and made available to journalists on Thursday, the body expressed displeasure with the treatment meted out to their colleague.

The statement read in part, “The attention of the NBA, Abuja Branch (Unity Bar), has been drawn to the brutal treatment and ill reception meted out to Mr Justin Gbagir, the Chairman of the NBA, Makurdi Branch, and the breach of the branch Treasurer’s fundamental rights.

“We condemn the act of brutality in very strong terms. This act of brutality by law enforcement agents against lawyers is one too many.”

Just In: NANS pulls out of June 12 protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students has suspended its planned June 12 nationwide protest.

The student union President, Sunday Asefon, disclosed the suspension in a statement on Friday morning titled ‘NANS Suspends June 12 Protest Over Concerns About Safety Of Protesters And Fear Of Possible Hijack By Politicians – Comrade Sunday Asefon’.

According to the statement, Asefon said the planned protest was embarked on to express the union’s grievances with the increasing spate of student abduction in the country.

But the union got information that some politicians with different agenda had planned to hijack the protest and agitate for their own selfish agenda.

These other interests he claimed include the ‘Buhari-must-go’ protest scheduled to hold on same Saturday by some politicians and activists.

He said, “Having considered the current security realities and the danger to the lives of our members in case of possible hijack of the planned protest, I in consultation with all the structures of NANS, therefore, announce the suspension of our proposed protest for June 12.

“The suspension of the protest is necessary to avoid a clash of interest and clash with security agencies that are on red alert to protect the nation’s infrastructure from security breaches on the proposed date as a result of many other protests slated for the date.

“We intend to protest for better security and improved welfare for our students, we must therefore not put the life of any of our students at risk to ventilate our grievances.”

Asefon however claimed that the protest is not cancelled but only postponed to a new date that would be announced later.

‘Protect yourself; confront anybody that wants to kill our people’ – Ebonyi Governor charges residents

0

Governor of Ebonyi State David Umahi has granted amnesty to armed youths in the state, while urging them to leverage on the new opportunity carved by the state government to employ about 5,000 persons into the state civil service including the empowerment of 3,000 youths.

During a security council meeting targeted at resolving the ravaging insecurity in the state on Thursday, Governor Umahi restated the state’s resolve to back the philosophy of one united Nigeria with equity, equal rights and opportunities.

While noting that herders had sent several threat messages to residents, the Governor charged the people of the state to always be ready to protect themselves and confront the mauraders.

“We have also resolved that they should drop whatsoever arms they have; the state government will give them amnesty and stop further confrontation with security agencies and the good people of the state.

“Again, Ebonyi State is not against any alleged agitation for any injustice whether it is at the family level, state, region and national.

“But as a state we have resolved not to allow any form of violent agitation in the state or attack on security agencies, people or restriction of movement, freedom of people or attack in any of our infrastructure….

“We demand that any alleged agitation and injustice must be compiled and be given to the leaders of the state for them to address them with the leadership at the centre.

“We note that there have been threats from herders with AK-47 sending text messages to Ebonyi State that they are coming to attack us.

“We have resolved as a people to confront anybody, whether he is a herder or criminal that will come into the state with any gun to kill, or anyone that enters the state with the intention to commit assault.

“Protect yourself in all the nooks and crannies of the state; confront anybody that wants to kill our people. If the people want to kill with a stick, look for a stick. Don’t look for security people to come, no sleeping day and night protect yourself.

“Form your vigilante. At the local government, Ebubeagu must do everything to protect the people.

“No more need to be afraid. If they write you that they are coming, tell them to come, this is our position.

“The traditional rulers, our leaders where the ring roads will pass, have assured us of adequate security.

“And all local government chairmen are to form joint security with the traditional rulers.

“Traditional rulers and their representatives where there is no one alive, the CAN leadership, councilors and leaders should form a very united committee to resolve all communal crises and maintain peace in their areas.” he said.

‘There is no plan to scrap the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC)’ – Reps

0

The House of Representatives Committee on Youths says there is no plan to scrap the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).

The chairman of the committee, Yemi Adaramodu, said this in Abuja Thursday at the official unveiling of nine books on NYSC and maiden NYSC film in commemoration of the 48th anniversary of the scheme.

Recall that a bill sponsored by Awaji-Inombek Abiante, which had scaled the second reading at the lower chamber, called for the scrapping of the NYSC.

But Adaramodu yesterday said: “Anybody is free to sponsor a bill, but the speaker and the rest of the house believe that the scheme has come to stay in Nigeria.

“The scheme is going nowhere and it is not the plan of the National Assembly to scrap it. I want to let you know that we’re with you and for you. We’re fully with you, we’re together.”

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule said there was no reason to abolish the NYSC, stressing that “Just as there’s no price for security, there is also no price for unity, and the NYSC defines the unity of Nigeria.”

A former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), said the NYSC had exposed corps members to life-changing opportunities and impacted the nation positively.

French court sentences man who slapped President Macron to 4 months in jail

0

A French court has sentenced the 28-year-old man who slapped France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, in the face to four months in prison.

Damien Tarel, a 28-year-old medieval history enthusiast, was immediately arrested after the incident which occurred as the French leader was greeting a crowd in the region on Tuesday.

He had been in custody since the assault on Tuesday which a prosecutor called “absolutely unacceptable” and “an act of deliberate violence”.

The court in the south-east city of Valence convicted Tarel on Thursday, June 10, on a charge of violence against a person invested with public authority. He was given four months in prison and an additional 14-month suspended sentence, and was banned from ever holding public office and from owning weapons for five years.

Tarel described himself as a right-wing or extreme-right “patriot” and member of the gilets jaunes economic protest movement.

After the incident, Tarel acknowledged hitting the president with a “rather violent” slap. “When I saw his friendly, lying look, I felt disgust, and I had a violent reaction,” he told the court. “It was an impulsive reaction … I was surprised myself by the violence.”

He said he and his friends had considered bringing an egg or a cream pie to throw at the president, but had dropped the idea – and insisted that the slap wasn’t premeditated.

“I think that Emmanuel Macron represents the decline of our country,” he said, without explaining what he meant.

Macron wouldn’t comment Thursday on the trial, but insisted that “nothing justifies violence in a democratic society, never.”

“It’s not such a big deal to get a slap when you go toward a crowd to say hello to some people who were waiting for a long time,” he said in an interview with broadcaster BFM-TV. “We must not make that stupid and violent act more important than it is.”

At the same time, the president added, “we must not make it banal, because anyone with public authority is entitled to respect.”

Another man arrested in the ruckus that followed the slap, identified by the prosecutor as Arthur C, will be judged at a later date, in 2022, for illegal possession of weapons.

The prosecutor’s office said that as well as finding weapons, police who searched the home of Arthur C also found books on the art of war, a copy of Adolf Hitler’s manifesto Mein Kampf and two flags, one symbolising communists and another of the Russian Revolution.

Malami makes u-turn, says Federal Government would not prosecute Nigerians who tweet

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has made a u-turn in his threat against Nigerians who make use of Twitter despite the Federal government suspension of the microblogging site.

In a chat with Vanguard on Thursday, Malami said his office will not be prosecuting Nigerians residing in or out the country who are making use of the platform but will go after any company or entity that offers to help Twitter bypass the suspension of its operations in the country.

Reacting during the interview, Malami said it is within the right of Nigerians as citizens of a democratic country to make use of Twitter but the Federal government is only against those who help Twitter beat the suspension.

He said, “It is within their guaranteed fundamental right to tweet from anywhere in the world. Nigeria, being a democratic nation, cannot stop its citizens from exercising their rights of freedom of expression.

“But our position on Twitter is clear: Anyone, whether individual or corporate institution that enables Twitter to circumvent the ban the Federal Government of Nigeria placed on the company, will be prosecuted.

“Our statement outlining our position on June 1, 2021 did not ask the DPP to prosecute Nigerians using Twitter or any social media platform to express their view. But we are going to use the legal instruments at our disposal to go after those who aid and abet Twitter to continue to threaten our corporate existence as a nation.

“At no time did we threaten any religious leader for using Twitter to express themselves. Neither did we indicate in any way that we were going after them. But mischief-makers were quick to mention names of religious leaders and give the impression that we were already in court to try them.

Malami further said that the Buhari-led administration against popular opinion is a people-centric government that enables human right; hence Nigerians have committed no offence by tweeting.

“Let it be made clear that the Buhari administration being a people-centred government that relies on the rule of law, will never adopt any policy or programme that seeks to add pain or injury to the very people who elected it to serve them.

“For the record, let it be made amply clear that the AGF, Abubakar Malami, is not after any Nigerian, tweeting from Nigeria or anywhere in the world but that any Nigerian company or entity that gives a helping hand for Twitter to escape the ban placed on it, will be dealt with,” Malami added.

It must however be said that the recent statement of the Attorney-General is a sharp contrast to his earlier threat made barely 24 hours after the ban was announced by Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed.

According to the statement, Malami said he had “directed for immediate prosecution of offenders of the federal government ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria”, telling the public prosecutor to “swing into action”.

He reiterated his threat of prosecuting Nigerians who have continued to use Twitter as recently as Tuesday when he spoke in an interview with Committee to Protect Journalists.

“The essence of the law is to achieve stability in the country” and prosecution “will serve as a deterrence to others,” he said.

However his surprising u-turn can be connected to the Attorney-General disregarding his own threat and logging into Twitter via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) despite the ban to deactivate his account.

Also, a lot of Nigerians who have continued tweeting have contested the legality of the directive that is not backed by any law or an executive order.

It is also unclear which organisations the Attorney General is saying because the majority of Twitter users have bypassed the restriction of access to Twitter by switching on the VPN on their phone or installing third parties VPN.
