Just In: US Government officially condemns Buhari’s #TwitterBan

The United States government has condemned President Buhari’s Twitter ban in Nigeria.

In a statement from the United States Secretary of State, signed by spokesperson Ned Price on Thursday, the United States government condemned the action of the Buhari regime to ban usage of Twitter in Nigeria.

The statement reads:

“The United States condemns the ongoing suspension of Twitter by the Nigerian government and subsequent threats to arrest and prosecute Nigerians who use Twitter. The United States is likewise concerned that the Nigerian National Broadcasting Commission ordered all television and radio broadcasters to cease using Twitter.

Unduly restricting the ability of Nigerians to report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy. Freedom of expression and access to information both online and offline are foundational to prosperous and secure democratic societies.

We support Nigeria as it works towards unity, peace, and prosperity. As its partner, we call on the government to respect its citizens’ right to freedom of expression by reversing this suspension”

The Federal Government last Friday had suspended the operations of Twitter, the microblogging and social networking service, in Nigeria.

Lai Mohammed, Minister of information, announced the suspension in a statement.

According to the statement, the minister cited “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

But many say that is only a cover and Twitter was suspended for deleting a tweet of President Muhammadu Buhari.

JUSUN Strike: Wike instructs Accountant General not to pay full salaries to judicial employees in June

0

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has directed the State Accountant General not to pay judges during the first week of June, when the “no work, no pay” policy was in effect.

The State administration had already warned that if JUSUN in the State did not call off the strike by May 31st, it would be forced to implement the no-work, no-pay policy.

Governor Wike, who blamed the State government’s refusal to pay JUSUN members for the first week of June on the union’s failure to comply with the directive to resume work by May 31st, reiterated that Rivers state has implemented full financial autonomy for the judiciary, and that the strike was unnecessary in the first place.

The governor stated that the Rivers State administration will not establish a budget implementation committee since such a group is not required by law.

JUSUN had in April embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike in protest against the denial of the judiciary its constitutionally guaranteed financial autonomy which was also affirmed by a Federal High Court judgement in January 2014.

The strike was suspended on Wednesday.

Doctors in Ondo begin 2 weeks warning strike

0

Doctors under the aegis of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) in Ondo State have commenced a two weeks warning strike over alleged neglect of the welfare of the doctors by the state government.

The two weeks warning strike was contained in a letter addressed to the State governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, signed by the state Chairman and Secretary of the NAGGMDP, Dr Roland Arohunmolase, and Dr Richard Obe on Thursday.

It reads: ” With due respect to your office, We write to notify your office of the immediate withdrawal of service by our members working under Ondo State Government Civil Service. Following Ordinary General Meeting of our association held on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, members resolved at proceeding on two weeks warning strike starting from 8:00 am, 10th of June, 2021.”

According to the letter, some the grounds for the industrial action include, “non-payment of salaries arrears being owed health workers in Ondo State (January 2017, March, April and May 2021), Gross under-staffing of government hospitals following the mass exodus of doctors and other health workers from the state.

“Non-regular payment of salaries and non-harmonisation of doctors’ grade level in Ondo State Civil Service as approved by Mr Governor which is contained in the letter written to Nigerian Medical Association Ondo State in March 2021.”

Other grounds are, “percentage payment of salaries to health workers, non-payment of the third tranche of COVID-19 allowance, non-implementation of Group Life Insurance for all Health workers,”

“Against this backdrop, We wish to let you know that our members have been overstretched and their emotional intelligence badly affected.”

The doctors said: ” Ondo State is being overpopulated and this has increased the numbers of patient patronage at various government-owned health facilities. Invariably it has become unbearable to cope with the deplorable state of things in Ondo State Government-owned hospitals.

‘We hereby state that it is not the wish of our members to proceed on this industrial action, but it is necessary to draw your attention and that of the citizenry to the afore-mentioned.

“The Association hopes Mr Governor will do the needful in addressing our dissatisfaction as contained in this letter,” the doctor stated in the letter.

Democracy Day: Federal Government declares Monday June 14 public holiday, warns against protests

The Federal Government has declared Monday, June 14 as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Shuaib Belgore.

The minister urged Nigerians to embrace the spirit of brotherliness for peace to thrive in the nation

He also called on the citizens to support the present administration in its efforts at ensuring a united and prosperous nation.

The statement was titled, ‘FG declares Monday, June 14, 2021, public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.’

The statement read in part, “The Federal Government, congratulated Nigerians on this occasion and urged all citizens to support the present administration in its efforts at ensuring a united and prosperous nation.

“Aregbesola said any form of agitation that threatens the unity of the country should be shunned for the good of all, saying the space known as Nigeria would be a haven of peace, unity and progress if all citizens love his or her neighbour and embrace the spirit of brotherliness.

“As we mark another Democracy Day in the history of our dear country, let us reflect on the efforts of our founding fathers and ensure that Nigeria remains one united and indivisible entity.

“No development can take place in an acrimonious environment.

“With the challenges we face in Nigeria today, I see an opportunity for us not to break up or break down but to break open; open up to ourselves in truth so that we may appreciate each other, understand each other, honour each other and live together in peace and prosperity.

“There will surely be light at the end of the tunnel.”

Nigerian Government opens official account on Indian social media platform ‘Koo’

0

Less than a week after the Nigerian government suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria, the federal government has opened an official account on Koo, an Indian microblogging platform.

The Koo account, with the handle, “@nigeriagov” and username, “Government of Nigeria”, had over 10,000 followers as at the time of filing this report.

The koo app appears to have drawn inspiration from Twitter but its navigation and usability are designed with keeping the indian vernacular speaking audience in centre.

Aprameya Radhakrishna, Koo founder and CEO, officially confirmed on Saturday that the platform is now available in Nigeria.

Radhakrishna said his team was working on adding Nigeria’s local languages for Koo users in the country.

“Koo is now available in Nigeria. We are thinking of enabling the local language there as well. He further added that they are considering introducing a local Nigerian language into the Koo app,” Radhakrishna said.

“Nigeria is similar to India in terms of language diversity. It has hundreds of regional languages. Koo has a global outlook and will enable micro-blogging in countries that need it the most. We have built a scalable platform, and while we are still enhancing the product, it’s already available for use in multiple countries today.” he said.

Recall that Nigeria’s minister of information, Lai Mohammed had initiated the Twitter ban, saying that the microblogging site was being used to undermine “Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

‘More than 200 people have been kidnapped In my constituency’ — Kebbi lawmaker laments

0

A member of the House of Representatives from Kebbi State, Kabir Ibrahim Tukura, has lamented that over 500 persons had been killed, 201 abducted and 15,000 displaced in attacks by bandits and terrorists on farming communities in Sakaba and Danko/Wasagu Local Government Areas of the state.

The lawmaker, who made the statement on Wednesday however, did not state the period within which those attacks happened.

In his lead debate at plenary, Tukura said though the state police command confirmed that bandits killed 88 persons in the last week’s attacks on Koro, Kimi, Gaya, Dimi, Zulu, Rafin Gora, D’lanko, Dguenge, Chonoko, and Unashi villages in Danko/Wasagu LGA, over 150 people were discovered to have been killed after an assessment visit to the affected areas.

The lawmaker said reports had indicated that about 5,000 cattle and 3,000 sheep were also rustled in areas in the last one week alone.

He said the bandits moved in hundreds from town to town, searching for cattle to rustle, farm produce to cart away and people to abduct.

“In some cases, the homes of the residents are entirely burnt down, thereby rendering them homeless. Besides, many of their victims have been maimed while women, both old and young, are raped.

“Considering the current rise in security challenges in Danko-Wasagu and Sakaba Local Government Areas and indeed across the country, It is apt to state that the government has not done enough to secure the lives and properties of the good people of the local government areas to enable them to go about their everyday life.

“The local governments have been suffering silently in the hands of bandits in recent months, a situation that has led to the overstretching of the security agencies beyond their limit.

“The farming communities in the local governments have lost over 500 persons to banditry and terrorist attacks. Furthermore, more than 201 individuals were kidnapped with millions of naira paid as ransom.

“Over 15,000 have been rendered homeless, the number of widows is on a steady rise, children cannot go to school, farmers do not have access to their farmlands, and local markets are closed.

“They are now becoming poorer and poorer, and above all, the local primary schools cannot accommodate the internally displaced persons in the affected communities,” he said.

“You cannot sit here in Lagos, for instance, and decide on the fate of APC on zoning – Buhari says

0

President Muhammadu Buhari says nobody has the power to decide for APC on zoning. The president said this while responding to a question during an exclusive interview with Arise TV on Thursday.

According to the president, only members of the the political party have the power to decide the party’s fate.

The president said the acting leadership of the party is fast working to reposition the party and make every member feel at home.

Buhari said, “The hope of this administration is to see APC last beyond it. Therefore we should allow the party to decide.

“You cannot sit here in Lagos, for instance, and decide on the fate of APC on zoning.

“The restructuring of the party has begun from the bottom to the top with the membership card registration. Every member of the party must be involved.

“We will soon conduct our convention. No single member of the party will be allowed to go against the wish of the party.

“The political party has to know how many members it has state by state. This the right step to go about.

“This administration under APC has achieved a lot. Go look at what was on ground before we came in and now.”

Federal Government directs all online media platforms and social media companies to register with NBC

0

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has asked all social media platforms and online broadcasting service providers operating in Nigeria to apply for broadcast licence.

NBC director-general, Armstrong Idachaba, gave the directive in a newspaper advertorial published on Thursday.

This is coming after the federal government’s announcement that Twitter and other social media platforms must register as a Nigerian company for them “to do business in Nigeria.”

Idachaba said in the advertorial that the NBC establishment code empowers the commission to ask the companies to be licensed.

Section two (b) of the NBC act of 2004 states: “(1) The Commission shall have [the] responsibility of: Receiving, processing and considering applications for the establishment, ownership or operation of radio and television stations including (i) cable television services, direct satellite broadcast and any other medium of broadcasting.”

The advertorial reads: “The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) hereby directs every Online Broadcast Service provider and Social Media Platforms operating within the Nigerian State to apply and obtain broadcast licence for their service(s).

“Note that any Online Broadcast Service Provider that fails to obtain a licence will be considered an illegal entity.”

It is not immediately clear whether the directive applies strictly to only broadcast organisations or not.

The Federal Government’s move to license social media companies is coming after Twitter took down a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari, after stating that the message violates its policy.

2023: Nigerians in Diaspora endorse Yahaya Bello, open campaign office in Germany

1

Nigerians in Diaspora Network and Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, have endorsed Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi as their candidate for the 2023 Presidency.

The group made this known during a world press conference in Oberhausen, Germany as they also opened a campaign office to support the movement.

In a statement made available to journalists late Wednesday, Odijie Irabor, General Coordinator of the group said the group had jointly selected Bello following thorough research.

Irabor noted that the attention of the International Community was however caught on Bello following his achievements of fighting insecurity, youth and women inclusion in governance, education development among others.

“We embarked on a massive consultation with our people in diaspora through our various networks of social cultural organisations, political organisations, media, religious bodies and many.

“This lead to the constitution of a high-powered committee to carry out a search for a young, viable, formidable, energetic, vibrant and result oriented presidential candidate for the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria.”

He stated that committee selected Bello among other people for the following reasons:

“Clamour for a youth president; Nigerians are condemning the preponderance of over-aged candidates for the exalted position of presidency.

“In this current political dispensation, his Excellency Governor Yahaya Bello is known to be the youngest governor in Nigeria with the desired physical and mental capacity to meet the growing complexity and diversity in our political environment.

“High security index in Kogi state; The most important function of a responsible government is the provision of security for lives and property.

“Notwithstanding the total collapse of the security architecture in Nigeria, Kogi state under the leadership of his Excellency Governor Yahaya Bello has recorded a very stable security atmosphere across the state.

“It must be emphasized that the result did not come by chance, but it was a pay-off of the Governor’s security strategies and his all- inclusiveness governance approach

“Current developmental strides of His Excellency; our review of his achievements in terms of projects delivery was instrumental to our quest for him to run for the coming presidential election,” Irabor said.

Herdsmen Crisis: Don’t sit idle, expecting me to do everything’ – Buhari says

0

President Muhammadu Buhari says governors lamenting herders attacks in their states should find a lasting solution to the crisis.

The president said this in an interview on Arise TV on Thursday and monitored by NewsWireNGR.

He said that recently, two Southwest governors visited him to complain about herdsmen encroaching on farmers’ lands in their regions.

“You know these people more than I do, and you are democratically elected to protect your people. Don’t sit idle expecting me to do everything, take action,” the President said.

Speaking further on the agitation of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), the president described IPOB’s agitation as a “a dot in a circle,” and said he has been assured by “the elderly people” and “the youths” from the south-south part of the country that region has no intention of seceding.

He said IPOB will not have “access to anywhere” even if they eventually secede from the country.

The president then reiterated his earlier controversial statement that IPOB members will treated in the “language that they understand”.

“I was encouraged by what I heard, nobody told me. Two statements from the south south: one by the elderly people, they said this time around there would be no (secession). And again the youth made the same statement; such encouragement,” Buhari said.

“So that IPOB is just like a dot in a circle. Even if they want to exit, they’ll have no access to anywhere. And the way they are spread all over the country, having businesses and properties. I don’t think IPOB knows what they are talking about.”

“In any case, we say we’ll talk to them in the language that they understand. We’ll organise the police and the military to pursue them.” he further threatened.

June 12: ‘Remain civil with law abiding citizens’ – IGP instructs officers

0

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has directed Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police and Commissioners of Police in states and FCT to remain civil with law abiding citizens during the Democracy Day celebration.

Speaking during a meeting with strategic commanders of the Nigerian Police Force in Abuja, the IGP said:

“The June 12 Democracy Day is days away. We are currently reviewing the security situation, with a view to ensuring a hitch-free exercise.

‘’Details of this will form part of our discussion. I must, however, remind you all of the need to remain civil with law abiding citizens, but firm with any person or group that may wish to take advantage of the event to threaten our internal security order,’’ he said.

Expressing dismay that most Command Commissioners of Police ‘still allow their officers to unnecessarily impound vehicles at police stations, the IGP said: “Police facilities are not junk yards and must not be turned to one. Indeed, such acts create vulnerabilities which often engender attacks on our facilities.

“Accordingly, I task you to return to your commands and undertake a major operation to clear all such indiscriminately impounded vehicles off your stations.

‘’The compliance to this directive shall be confirmed in the course of my on-going tours to your command and any departmental head, zonal commander, commissioner of police or unit head that is found wanting will be dealt with.

“I have also received reports of abuses associated with the use of SPY plate numbers and tainted glasses. Accordingly, henceforth the issuance of SPY plate numbers and tainted glasses permits are hereby suspended.

‘’The existing authorizations are being reviewed and a protocol to regulate the issuance of such permits will be evolved.

“An emerging trend in which some motorists cover their plate numbers has also been noticed across the country. This practice inhibits our law enforcement operations and hence, is intolerable. Consequently, commissioners of Police are tasked to as part of their operations, to arrest any motorist involved in this act.

“Furthermore, I have been receiving reports that some Commissioners of Police are still allowing the mounting of road blocks in their jurisdictions. For the avoidance of doubt, road blocks under any description or guise remain banned across the country and any officer found to be contravening this order will be held liable and dealt with firmly.

“The society has evolved. As law enforcement operatives, we must align our policing strategies to this societal dynamics, particularly, at this time that our policing functions are being built in the community policing model in which the citizen’s interests are prioritized.

“Road blocks as a policing model is becoming obsolete and unacceptable, hence we are working towards enhancing our intelligence-led and technology-driven policing capability as well as strengthening the ‘Safer Highway Motorized Patrol Scheme as an alternative to road blocks.

“Therefore you are tasked to ensure that deployments within your command are reviewed and your operations aligned to this new policing approach which discourages the disposition to limiting the liberty of the citizens through road blocks which are known to be avenues for corrupt tendencies and other vices that widens the trust gap between the citizens and the police”. He said.
