Who is Yetunde Oni? New MD/CEO of Union Bank

Profile of Yetunde Oni

Yetunde Oni was appointed as the Managing Director (MD)/Cheif Executive Officer (CEO) of Union Bank following the dissolution of the boards and managements of Union Bank, Keystone Bank, and Polaris Bank by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Her appointment was announced on Wednesday by Sidi-Ali Hakama, the acting director of Corporate Communication at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), through a circular dated January 10, 2024.

Mrs Oni is an experienced banker in emerging markets with over 29 years of expertise in client solutions, relationship management, team leadership, and talent development.

“We are confident in Yetunde Oni’s abilities to lead Union Bank in these challenging times,” stated Hakama.

“Her extensive experience in the banking industry is what Union Bank needs to navigate the current situation.” 

Biography of Yetunde Oni

According to Yetunde Oni’s LinkedIn profile, her academic background includes a degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1991, Executive Training at Oxford University in 2016, and an MBA in Business Administration from Bangor University in 2020.

She is an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Loan and Risk Management.

Oni is an active Associate member of WIMBIZ (Women in Management, Business, and Public Sector).

Her rise in the banking industry started as Relationship Manager, Institutional Banking Group in Ecobank Transnational Incorporated. She held the position from 1994 to 2005.

Oni, in 2005, joined Standard Chartered Bank as Senior Relationship Manager/Area Manager, Local Corporates.

Yetunde Oni was later transferred to the Apapa Branch where she was saddled with the dual responsibility of Wholesale Banking Branch Head and the development of the Bank’s Local corporate portfolio in the Apapa and Ogun State Region.

Five years later, in 2010, she became the Country Head, Local Corporates of the bank and will serve in the position for four years until 2014 when she was promoted to the position of Managing Director & Country Head, Commercial Banking West Africa.

Seven years later, in January 2021, she was promoted to the position of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone. She was the first female to be promoted to the position.

Oni served in this position for 3 years and 1 month until her appointment by the CBN as the MD/CEO of Union Bank on January 10, 2024.
