Early life and education

Chiedu J. Ebie was born on 2 January 1970 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, to the family of Professor John C. Ebie (of blessed memory) and Mrs. Eunice Ebie.

He grew up in Edo State, where he attended the University of Benin Staff School for his primary education.

From 1981 to 1986, he attended Air Force Military School, Jos, Plateau State, where he obtained his WAEC GCE O Levels. He graduated from the University of Benin in 1991 with an LL.B. (Hons), was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992, and obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the University of London in 2012.

Chiedu J. Ebie is married and hails from Ika South Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria.

Career

Public Sector

Secretary to the State Government (SSG) (2019–2021)

Ebie served as the Secretary to the Delta State Government under Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. His responsibilities included advising the Governor, implementing state government policies, and coordinating activities of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). He also chaired key committees, including the State Flood, Risk & Management Committee and the State COVID-19 Response Team.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education (2015–2019)

As Commissioner, Ebie introduced reforms in Delta State’s education sector, including:

Establishing the Teachers Professional Development Centre (TPDC).

Conducting a transparent recruitment process for 1,000 teachers in 2019.

Revamping school sports initiatives like the Zenith Bank Principals’ Cup.

Introducing local language curricula for Urhobo, Isoko, Izon, Enuani, Ika, and Itsekiri languages.

Enhancing ICT integration and promoting inclusive education policies.

Private Sector

Ebie worked extensively in law and oil and gas before entering public service.

Managing Partner, Cranston Pitt Oil & Gas Consultancy (2021–present)

He currently leads this consultancy firm, providing strategic solutions in the oil and gas industry.

Managing Director/CEO, Millennium Oil & Gas Company Limited (2010–2015)

Ebie oversaw the development of the Oza Marginal Field project, managing operations and regulatory compliance.

Legal Practice

Ebie’s legal career included roles such as:

  • Partner, Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors (2006–2009).
  • Managing Partner, Okonjo, Odiawa & Ebie (1997–2006).
  • Associate Counsel, Aluko & Oyebode (1993–1997).
