Biography

Naja’atu Bala Muhammad is a Nigerian politician and activist. She is a member of the All Progressive Congress(APC)

The outspoke politician is the first woman to serve as the president of the National Students Union at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) and also the first female Vice – President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)

Naja’atu was born into the family of Alhaji Ali Abdullahi, a renowned socialist and a contemporary of the late Mallam Aminu Kano in the Northern Elements Progressive Union.

She was the Nominee for Kano Central Senatorial District under the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the 2007 general election. 

Education

Naja’atu Bala had her elementary education at St. Louis Private School, Kano, before proceeding to WTC Secondary School in Kano for her secondary education.

She then headed to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to bag a degree in history

Career

Naja’atu started her political career when she was an undergraduate at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she was elected president of the institution’s student union government. 

In another capacity, she contested for the vice president of the national student body, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and won. She was the first female to occupy the office.

Naja’atu began her professional political escapade in 2007 when the APC nominated her to represent Kano Central Senatorial District at the national assembly. 

The outspoken politician has been a staunch critic of the government and its responsibilities. In November, she demanded the prosecution of First Lady Aisha Buhari over the detention and incarceration of Aminu Mohammed, a final-year student of Federal University Dutse who was accused of insulting the first lady.

In 2018, Naja’atu was appointed as a Commissioner at the Police Service Commission by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In 2022, she was appointed as the All Progressives Congress APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) director. Naja’atu headed the Civil Society Liaison wing of the council.

She resigned from her position as a director of the PCC in 2023, stating that current developments in the political and democratic sphere of the country are not conducive enough for her to serve in the capacity and party politics.

Controversy

After Naja’atu was appointed to serve as a director of the All Progressives Congress APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) in preparation for the general election and actualization of the presidential mandate of the presidential candidate of the party, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, she reportedly resigned her position a month to the election.

In her resignation letter to APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, Naja’atu expressed her displeasure as to the current state of the country.

A part of the letter reads, “The challenges that Nigeria faces today require me to continue championing the struggle for a better country with a clear conscience as I remain absolutely loyal to Nigeria.”

She also stated that she is leaving the political arena because her beliefs and values no longer align with party politics.
