Anambra Govt. Increases Rural Teachers Salary By 20 Per cent

The Anambra Government has announced an incentive of 20 per cent increase in the basic salary of teachers posted in rural communities of the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Chief Tony Onyima, announced this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Onitsha.

He said the new policy was to improve the standard of education in rural areas, adding that government also approved a N3,000 monthly allowance for teachers of English Language, Mathematics and basic sciences.

Onyima said the policy was being supported by the World Bank Education Intervention programme, to attract more teachers to rural schools as well as make them comfortable.

“It will also help to stop the age-long drift by teachers to urban and semi-urban areas.

“The government had clearly defined rural areas that fall within this category since most parts of the state have developed to appreciable level with the best network of rural roads in the country,” he said.

Onyima said that the new policy would take effect from July.

He said that a team had toured all public and private schools in the state to ascertain the level of implementation of the programme, as well as conduct a needs assessment of each school.

NAN recalls that the state had recently recruited over 3,000 teachers for English Language, Mathematics and basic sciences.
