Harry Belafonte is a renowned American singer, actor, and social activist, best known for his pioneering work in introducing Caribbean music to the world. He was born on March 1, 1927, in Harlem, New York, to Caribbean parents, and grew up in poverty during the Great Depression.

Belafonte started his career as a jazz singer in the 1940s, performing in nightclubs and theaters in New York City. He gained national recognition with his hit single “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)” in 1956, which became a chart-topping hit and is now considered a classic. He went on to record several other popular songs, including “Jump in the Line” and “Island in the Sun.”

Belafonte’s music was inspired by his Caribbean roots, and he was instrumental in introducing Calypso music to American audiences. He also used his platform as a musician to raise awareness about social issues, such as racial inequality and civil rights.

Belafonte was one of the closest confidants of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and played a crucial role in the civil rights movement. He organized the March on Washington in 1963 and used his fame to promote the cause of racial justice. Tucker Carlson, Fox Network’s most prominent star sacked; here are the top facts about him as the company “parts ways” with the presenter

0

Tucker Carlson, the highest-rated cable TV host credited with setting the agenda for US conservatives, has left Fox News, the network announced.

In a statement, Fox News said it and Carlson had agreed to “part ways”.

His last TV programme was Friday 21 April, the statement added. His primetime slot will now be hosted by a series of interim hosts until a permanent replacement is found.

The brief two-paragraph statement gave no reason for the abrupt decision.

The Los Angeles Times, citing unnamed people familiar with the situation, reports that the decision to fire Carlson came from the top, including Fox chairman Rupert Murdoch and his son Lachlan.

The 53-year-old was not just a popular presenter, but also a hugely influential one. His shows frequently set the agenda for conservatives and, by extension, the Republican party.

His programme offered a blend of populist conservative takes on issues ranging from immigration, crime, race, gender and sexuality, with “woke” ideology becoming a frequent target.

It made up four of the top 10 rated programmes on US cable TV, according to Nielsen data for the week 27 March to 2 April.

He was Fox News’ top-rated host, with more than three million viewers tuning in on an average night.

While Carlson often publicly agreed with Donald Trump, whose politics have transformed the Republican party in recent years, he would occasionally diverge from the former president’s political views.

  1. Tucker Carlson is a conservative political commentator, journalist, and television personality who UNTIL recently, hosted Tucker Carlson Tonight on Fox News Channel.
  2. Carlson was born on May 16, 1969, in San Francisco, California. He is the eldest son of Richard Warner Carlson, a former Los Angeles news anchor and U.S. ambassador to the Seychelles, and Lisa McNear, an artist.
  3. Carlson attended Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he majored in history. He is also a graduate of the St. George’s School in Newport, Rhode Island.
  4. Carlson started his journalism career as a fact-checker for Policy Review, a conservative journal. He later worked for The Weekly Standard and The New Republic, and served as co-host of CNN’s Crossfire.
  5. Carlson has written for several publications, including Esquire, The Weekly Standard, and The New York Times Magazine. He is also the author of several books, including “Politicians, Partisans, and Parasites: My Adventures in Cable News.”
  6. Carlson has been a controversial figure due to his views on issues such as immigration, race, and gender. He has been criticized for promoting white nationalism and for making inflammatory statements about women and minorities.
  7. In 2018, Carlson came under fire for his comments about immigrants, when he said that they were making the United States “dirtier.” The comment drew widespread condemnation, including from advertisers, who pulled their ads from his show.
  8. Despite the controversy, Carlson remains one of the most-watched hosts on cable news, with his show averaging more than three million viewers per night.
  9. Carlson is married to Susan Carlson, and they have four children together. He is also an avid outdoorsman and has written about his love of hunting and fishing.
  10. In 2020, Carlson faced criticism for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, with some accusing him of downplaying the severity of the virus and spreading misinformation. Carlson has also been criticized for promoting conspiracy theories, including the false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump.

A fresh motion on notice before appeal court to stop Bola Tinubu from being inaugurated as Nigeria’s new President

0

A fresh motion on notice seeking to stop Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu from being inaugurated as Nigeria’s new President on May 29, 2023, has been instituted at the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

The fresh suit marked CA/CV/259/2023 is instituted by a Presidential candidate in the 2019 Presidential election and constitutional lawyer, Chief Ambrose Albert Owuru and his political party, Hope Democratic Party (HDP).

Owuru, who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1982, is praying the Court of Appeal in Abuja to prohibit President Muhammadu Buhari, Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from inaugurating the 2023 President-elect on May 29.

The politician, who participated in the 2019 presidential poll on the platform of Hope Democratic Party (HDP) wants Buhari, the AGF and the INEC stopped from taking any further steps on the 2023 presidential election that produced Tinubu as winner.

Owuru, who claimed to be adjudged constitutional winner of the 2019 presidential election predicated his grouse against inauguration of Tinubu or anybody else as successor to Buhari on the ground that he is the constitutionally adjudged winner of the 2019 election and has not spent his tenure as required by law.

Among others, Owuru insisted that President Buhari has been usurping his tenure of office since 2019 because the Supreme Court has not determined his petition filed in 2019 in which he challenged the purported declaration of Buhari as the election winner.

In his motion on notice marked CA/CV/259/2023 just filled at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, Owuru applied for “An order of prohibitory injunction compelling Buhari, AGF and INEC, their servants, agents and privies to preserve and give due cognizance and abstain from any further undertaking or engaging in any act of usurpation of adjudged acquired Constitutional rights and mandate as winner of the 2019 presidential election.”

He also applied for another order directing and placing on notice that any form of handover inauguration, organized and Superintended by Buhari on 29th May 2023 outside the adjudged winner of the 2019 presidential election, subject of the pending appeal, remains and is viewed as an “interim place holder” administration pending the hearing and determination of his substantive appeal on constitutional interpretation thereof.

Listed as respondents in the motion on notice are President Muhammadu Buhari, Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as 1st to 3rd, respectively.

The motion on notice filed on his behalf by Mr Odion Peter has been served on President Buhari and AGF through their counsel, Mrs Maimuna Lami Ashiru of the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, while that of the INEC was served through the Head of Legal Department and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Mr S. O Ibrahim.

The motion is supported with an 8-paragraph affidavit praying the Court of Appeal for expeditious hearing before the inauguration of Tinubu.

The affidavit deposed to by an Abuja based legal practitioner, Adebayo Anafowode and filed at the Court of Appeal in Abuja expressed apprehension that Owuru’s suit against Buhari would be rendered nugatory unless given quick hearing.

Meanwhile, no date has been fixed for hearing of the suit by the Court of Appeal.

A total of 257 judges will hear petitions arising from the 2023 general elections – here’s the complete names

A total of 257 judges will hear petitions arising from the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, according to a list by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

Proceedings at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and State Election Petition Tribunals are expected to commence fully in May after the Worker’s Day holiday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued Certificates of Return to all winners of various positions.

Already, hundreds of petitions have been filed to challenge the outcome of the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state assembly polls.

But more are expected due to the April 15 supplementary elections in more than 20 states, in view of the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Section 132 (7) & (8) allows for petitions to be filed within 21 days after the declaration of results. The respondents have 21 days to respond, while the court has 180 days to decide.

The senior judicial officers to preside were drawn from State High Court, FCT High Court, Federal High Court and National Industrial Court.

Bishop David Ibiyeomie says any country where drug baron, terrorists leader serve as President, Vice President is in trouble

0

The presiding pastor of Salvation Ministries, Bishop David Ibiyeomie, has subtly likened the outcome of Nigeria’s recent presidential election with the combination of Pablo Escobar and Osama Bin Laden as President and Vice President.

Ibiyeomie in one of his recent sermons in his church headquartered in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, said that any country where a drug baron and a terrorist leader serve as president and vice president is in big trouble.

Pablo Escobar was a notorious Colombian drug trafficker who collaborated with other criminals to form the Medellín cartel in the early 1970s, while Osama Bin Laden was a terrorists’ leader who attacked the World Trade Centre in the US in 2001.

Meanwhile, Ibiyeomie said he was disgusted when he watched a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) defending a drug baron on national television and said that such person’s SANship should be turned to dis-SAN, saying that it has gotten to a point where people know the truth but choose to lie.

In the short video footage of the sermon which has gone viral on the internet, Ibiyeomie said, “Escobar and Osama Bin Laden to rule, some people to rule a country. Escorbar, you know who is Escobar? A drug baron. Heavy drug baron, and Osama Bin Laden was the highest terrorist. That is, two people like to rule in any nation of the world. I don’t know which nation they want to rule but any nation.

“That people who are educated can sit down, I heard a lawyer, a SAN (Senior Advocate of Nigeria) talking on television, I said, is this man okay? I looked at him and I said this man, so you can see truth clearly like this and be talking. I got disgusted. He was defending a drug baron. I said, this man, your SANship should be turned to dis-SAN.

“I got disgusted and said how can you see truth like this and say it is a lie. That is how some countries have turned to, where we cannot tell ourselves the truth.

“I don’t know the nation but you know the nation. Just imagine nation where Escorbar will rule and Osama Bin Laden will be his vice, it will not happen but just have a mental picture of any nation on earth.”

Recall that the “President-elect”, Bola Tinubu was fingered to have been involved in a white heroin trafficking network which operated in Chicago and some parts of Indiana and led by one Adegboyega Mueez Akande between 1988 and 1993.

According to the Verified Complaint for forfeiture in case No. 93 C 4483 Obtained by SaharaReporters and reported in 2008, which was filed on July 26, 1993 before the Hon. Judge Nordberg of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United States Government urged the Court to order the forfeiture of funds in accounts Nos. 263226700 held by First Heritage Bank in the name of Bola Tinubu, funds in accounts 39483134, 39483396, 4650279566, 00400220, 39936404 and 39936383 held by Citibank N.A in the name of Bola Tinubu and funds in accounts 52050-89451952,52050-89451952, 52050-89451953 held by Citibank in the name of Bola Tinubu because there was probable cause to believe that the funds in Tinubu’s bank accounts represented proceeds of narcotics trafficking or were monies involved in financial transactions in violations of 18 U.S.C, sections 1956 and 1957 and therefore, was forfeitable to the U.S Government.

However, in a tacit defense of the ownership of the funds, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu averred in Court that the funds belonged to himself, his wife, K.O Tinubu and his surrogate mother, Alhaja Mogaji and warranted that they had exclusive right, title and interest to the funds.
In an affidavit sworn to by Kevin Moss, a Special Agent with the United States Internal Revenue Service, criminal investigation division in support of the verified complaint for forfeiture of Bola Tinubu’s moneys held in various Bank accounts, the agent gave a vivid account of how he came to the conclusion that the funds were proceeds of narcotics transaction in violation of the U.S law.

Tinubu’s drug trafficking allegation has remained controversial, especially in 2022 at the build up of the 2023 general elections where Tinubu and the former governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, who had also been accused of having links with terrorists operating in the Northern region of Nigeria, emerged presidential and vice presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

They were declared winners of the February 25th presidential election amid rejection, protests and criticisms by many Nigerians and foreign observers.

Tinubu’s camp has however defended his drug trafficking allegation but several Certified True Copy of court documents have been released to back up the allegation.

The President will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar, among other government officials.

NDLEA has warned skitmakers and comedians against the misuse of its official jackets

0

Verified

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has warned skitmakers and comedians against the misuse of its official jackets to mislead and create false impressions.

A trending video skit on social media showed some persons wearing red jackets similar to the ones used by NDLEA personnel.

NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the video is an old skit that the agency disclaimed about one year ago.

The agency in May 2022 stated that it had established, following a series of public inquiries, that the video with screenshot pictures attached to the statement is a skit produced by one Mathew C Eze who lives in the Lekki area of Lagos.

A year after, the video returned to the social media space, a development that has led to several inquiries from concerned members of the public on the content of the video.

“We will like to reiterate again that the confusion the controversial video has created in the minds of members of the public underscores the need for some social media content producers to show restraint, responsibility and decorum in how they misuse paraphernalia of law enforcement officers to avoid misconceptions and insinuations,” Babafemi said.

“The agency will also like to remind those fond of this kind of indiscretion, especially the misuse of its official jackets to mislead and create false impressions, that such has consequences.”
