A 16-year-old girl has narrated how her 53-year-old uncle subjected her to repeated sexual assault and forced her to terminate two pregnancies

A 16-year-old girl has narrated how her 53-year-old uncle subjected her to repeated sexual assault and forced her to terminate two pregnancies in Okeodunwo Street, Igbado, Ondo town, in Ondo state.

The victim, according to a Police source, alleged that her uncle sexually assaulted her almost daily, concealing the abuse by cleaning her with a cloth after each encounter.

Spokesperson for the state Police Command, Ayanlade Olayinka, said that the victim herself reported at the Command.

Ayanlade, who said the suspect had been arrested, added that the victim “further alleged that the suspect engaged in the act almost daily, and that after each episode, he would clean her private part with a piece of cloth.

“Shockingly, the suspect had also facilitated the termination of her pregnancies on two occasions.

“Upon receipt of this disturbing report, the Gender-Based Offences Unit of the Command immediately swung into action, arrested the suspect, and diligently processed the case for prosecution.

“He has since been arraigned before a competent court of jurisdiction and remanded in custody pending further trial.”

“The Command,” according to him, “is committed to protecting the rights of women and children and to ensure that offenders face the full weight of the law without compromise.”

In another development, police detectives have arrested a construction worker, Wale Ibrahim, for stabbing a co-worker, Fisayo Ajetumobi, to death over N14,000 debt at Areyetele Street, Sabo Road, Ondo town.

Ayanlade said that the duo were working at a construction site along Litaye Camp via Laje Road, Ondo.

According to him the suspect, on arrival at the site, demanded for the money being owed for wood he had earlier sold to him.
“An altercation ensued between the duo, during which the suspect stabbed the victim on the chest with a knife.

“Sadly, the victim sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot as a result of this unwarranted act of violence.

“The suspect was promptly arrested by the police, and after diligent investigation, he has been charged to court to face the full weight of the law,” he said.

Ayanlade said that the command  “strongly condemns this senseless act of violence and will not tolerate criminality in any form within the state.”
He assures members of the public that the Command remains committed to the safety of lives and property, while calling on residents to shun violence and always explore lawful means of resolving disputes.

The spokesperson enjoined the public to continue to partner with the police by providing useful and timely information that can aid proactive crime prevention and effective policing of the state.

Edo Government has demolished four houses linked to cultists

The Edo State Government has demolished four houses linked to cultism.

Twenty suspected cultists were also arrested in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest of the suspects and demolition of the houses was carried out by the Edo State Special Security Squad, codenamed ‘Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers’.

The arrests and the subsequent demolition of the houses followed the recent killing of two persons in the Etsako on 16th September 2025.

The demolished houses are located at Egbeadokhai Street, behind Otaru Primary School, Auchi; Anoguele Street, Iyakpi, South-Ibie and Ogodomiza area in Ibie-Nafe, all in Etsako West LGA.

John Izegaegbe, the Secretary of the State Security Squad, who disclosed this to newsmen on Friday in Benin City, said the buildings were linked to suspected cultists.

Izegaegbe said the building at Egbeadokhai Street, Auchi and the one at Anoguele Street, Iyakpi, South-Ibie, were owned by well-known suspected cultists who allegedly belonged to the Black Axe and Eiye confraternities.

He further alleged that the building at Egbeadokhai Street, Auchi, served as a regular meeting point for members of the Black Axe Confraternity.

He also alleged that the house was directly linked to the murder in Auchi earlier in the week, with evidence including weapons and cult insignia found on-site

.

The State Security Squad’s secretary said two cut-to-size guns, two black beret caps associated with Black Axe cultists, and one sharp axe, were found in the house.

He added that the owner of the house is currently on the run.

A similar operation took place in South-Ibie following the recent killing of a young man, who was a barber, in the area.

Izegaegbe alleged that the killing was linked to a clash between cult groups.

According to him, another house also demolished in Anoguele Street, Iyakpi, South-Ibie, belongs to a cultist said to be a member of the Eiye Confraternity.

“When security agents arrived at his residence, he had already fled. The suspect was named as the main mastermind of the recent killing of the barber.

“A property in the Ogodomiza Area in Ibie-Nafe belonging to another cult leader was also demolished.

“The house was earlier raided a day before, which led to the arrest of two young men, Momoh Austin (17) and Joseph Oyazojo (21).

“The suspects confessed they were brought to the area to engage in cybercrime activities commonly referred to as Yahoo Yahoo.

“Authorities also conducted a related sweep at Hybrid Hotel and Suites in Elele, Uzairue, where suspects were arrested,” he said.

Izegaegbe opined that the demolition is a warning to all landlords and cultists.

Also speaking, Eribo Emwanta, a member of the security squad, advised parents and hotel owners to be vigilant, noting that the agency is cleaning the communities and hotels harbouring criminals in the state.

He vowed that more properties linked to cultists are expected to be marked for demolition in line with the declaration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Nigerian Immigration can now deliver 5,000 passports in five hours – Tunji-Ojo says

0

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, says the Nigerian Immigration Service can now deliver 4,000 to 5,000 passports in five hours for the first time in 62 years.

He disclosed this in a statement on Thursday after inspecting the newly built Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.

With the infrastructure, Tunji-Ojo said the Service could personalise over 1,000 passports in one hour, up from 250 to 300 passports daily.

“This morning (Thursday), alongside the Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani, and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nanna Nandap, I inspected the newly built Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS headquarters in Abuja.

“With these strategic infrastructural investments, which did not cost a kobo to the government, the NIS can now personalise over 1,000 passports in one hour.

“To put it into perspective, long before this development, the service could only record an average of 250 to 300 passports daily. But today, under five work hours, the service can now deliver about 4,500 to 5,000 passports.

“As a major milestone, for the first time in 62 years of the service [NIS], this centralisation puts an end to the production of our passports at multiple centres across the world,” he stated.

Three things to look out for in Serie A

0

Struggling Lazio host Roma in the first Rome derby of the Serie A season with both teams still finding their feet, while Napoli host Pisa as their top-of-the-table battle with Juventus continues.

AFP highlights three things to look out for in the Italian top flight this weekend:

Derby day danger?

Neither Lazio nor Roma are in the rudest of health heading into what is always a fiery local affair in the Italian capital, with both teams needing desperately not to lose the derby after dismal defeats last time out.

Roma, on six points from three fixtures, fell at home to Torino last weekend and are yet to really look like a Gian Piero Gasperini team, a transformation that could take more than one season to complete.

But Roma fans are notorious for their lack of patience even in a country where a bad week or two can lead to supporter unrest and calls for a change, and matches with Lazio are typically powder keg occasions which can define a season.

Ads by

Lazio meanwhile were beaten at promoted Sassuolo and coach Maurizio Sarri had to deal with a summer transfer ban, meaning no reinforcements for a team which failed to qualify for Europe last term.

Two defeats from their first three matches, including a diabolical opening-day performance at Como would all be forgotten with a win over their despised city rivals.

Napoli on the march

Champions Napoli have carried on where they left off last season and already look clear favourites to retain the Scudetto thanks to the title-winning squad being given an injection of new blood with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne.

A perfect nine points from nine have Antonio Conte’s team on top of the pile, ahead of Juventus on goal difference and performing better than any other team in the league.

Promoted Pisa should be no match for De Bruyne and company despite Napoli heading into Monday night’s clash off the back of a gruelling night in their opening Champions League 2-0 loss at Manchester City.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s early red card meant there was no fairytale return to the Etihad for De Bruyne as Conte sacrificed the former City star to bolster his defence.

But Di Lorenzo’s dismissal and De Bruyne’s departure neutered Napoli as an attacking force.

Juve’s Vlahovic dilemma

Juve coach Igor Tudor has a striking dilemma on his hands ahead of his team’s trip to Verona on Saturday, when the Turin giants attempt to maintain their perfect start to the domestic campaign.

Vlahovic looked certain to leave in the summer but he was the key man in Juve’s incredible stoppage-time comeback from two goals down to draw 4-4 with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

The Serbia striker netted twice, including the goal in the fourth minute of added time which got Juve back into the game, and sparked bedlam in the Allianz Stadium stands by setting up Lloyd Kelly’s last-gasp leveller with a pinpoint cross.

Vlahovic has scored four times already this season, but his goals have all come as a substitute with new signing Jonathan David starting three of Juve’s four matches in all competitions.

The only match Vlahovic did start was Juve’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Inter Milan last weekend, when he failed to score, leaving Tudor wondering whether he should keep his highest paid player (12 million euros a season) as an impact sub in what will almost certainly be the 25-year-old’s final season with the club.

Jose Mourinho has admitted that joining Fenerbahce was a “mistake” and claimed the Turkish giants were not on his “level”

0

Jose Mourinho has admitted that joining Fenerbahce was a “mistake” and claimed the Turkish giants were not on his “level.”

The 62-year-old made the comments after being unveiled as Benfica’s new manager, following Bruno Lage’s dismissal.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss, who was sacked by Fenerbahce last month after just over a year in charge, is back at the club where he began his managerial journey.

Speaking to Abola, Mourinho reflected on his decision to move to Turkey:

“My career so far has been rich; I’ve coached the biggest clubs in the world, in different countries. I made the wrong choice; sometimes I don’t have the right word in Portuguese… no regrets, because regrets don’t help us at all in life, but the awareness of what we did well and what we did wrong exists. I made a mistake going to Fenerbahçe; it wasn’t my cultural level, it wasn’t my football level, it wasn’t my level. Obviously, I gave everything until the last day. Obviously, I had to mourn, like Bruno [Lage] is doing now, because nobody likes to leave, but coaching Benfica is returning to my level, and my level is coaching the biggest clubs in the world.”

Mourinho, who previously guided Porto to Champions League glory, did not stop at calling his Fenerbahce move a mistake. He also criticised their transfer dealings, pointing to a lack of balance in the squad he inherited.

“At my previous club, things were easy. I wanted to play with four players, but the club signed five players the day after I left. While I was there, it was impossible to play with four defenders when the team had seven central defenders. And only one winger. I adapt very well to what’s available. I praised Benfica’s squad and will do so again. If you ask me if I tried to play with words and emotions, to take the pressure off my team and apply that pressure, obviously, I did. But I don’t take back a word of what I said at the time, that Benfica had done a great job in the transfer market, endowing the team with potential that, perhaps, it lacked last season. As I said yesterday, I’m better, but I’m not exactly a great example of fair play. When I lose, I bite my fingers. It wasn’t very easy for me to congratulate Benfica, Bruno [Lage], Benfica deserved all of that, I recognize what happened.”

In Nigeria, bathroom selfies are no joke – here’s why

With its marbled walls, exposed lightbulbs and plentiful mirrors, the bathroom at The Library, a nightclub in Lagos, Nigeria, is practically begging patrons to snap a photo.

Then it comes, a message delivered on a gold-framed sign: “No selfies in the restroom… just kidding.”

In Nigeria, bathroom selfies are no joke.

From the buzzing mega-city of Lagos to the stuffy capital Abuja and conservative Kano in the north, bars and lounges are decking out their restrooms – not just to catch up with times but also to bring in new customers.

AFP sent reporters to women’s bathrooms across Africa’s most populous country to document the trend.

Renovations have been made, mirrors rearranged and lighting adjusted. More is more: Marble and gold, sometimes of the faux variety, are popular design choices.

At Zaza, a nightlife staple, pressing a button on the bathroom wall will summon a complimentary glass of champagne that pops through a small window. It’s all part of a campaign to ease nerves – and draw smiles – among those in front of the mirror.

“The decor plays a huge role, especially for Nigerian ladies. And we try to attract as much as we can,” Johnny Franjeh, assistant general manager of Zaza, told AFP.

Inside, women adjusted the necklines of their brightly coloured dresses, swayed their hips and batted their fake eyelashes, phones in hand.

The walls are adorned with floral wallpaper and multiple mirrors, allowing for different shooting angles.

From Abuja to Kano

There is something in it for the clubs, as well: the free advertising that comes with so many people posting their selfies to social media – including influencers with massive followings.

One such influencer, known as Comiebarbie, with 100,000 followers on Instagram, admitted that one of the first things she does upon arriving to a trendy locale is to “quickly go to the restroom with my friends so I can take pictures”.

In the smartphone era, the bathroom mirror selfie might be a long-established trend.

But Lagos, a boisterous megalopolis home to more than 20 million people, has found a way to make it an over-the-top novelty – as have quieter places like Abuja, the all-work-and-no-play planned city that serves as the nation’s capital.

Psychedelic-patterned walls adorn the “selfie room”, just off the women’s restroom at A Bar Called Paper, in the upscale Maitama neighbourhood.

“The most important thing I’m looking for is a suitable angle,” said Stephanie, a 26-year-old wearing a sequined, halter-neck dress, that reflected endlessly as it bounced across multiple mirrors.

The trend extends all the way up to Kano, the cultural and economic capital of Nigeria’s mostly Muslim, largely conservative north.

At Antika, a lounge popular with the city’s youth, the dresses are looser and less revealing, their sleeves are longer andpatrons’ make-up is more subtle.

But once they make their way to the bathroom, they have plenty in common with partygoers in the south, spending long minutes playing with their reflections in mirrors carefully arranged against tropical wallpaper.

‘We invented that trend!’

Amid the current restroom arms race, there are also rivalries and claims of being first.

“We invented that trend!” Ghada Ghaith, CEO of Rococo, another Lagos haunt, told AFP.

Two weeks before opening, staff from the cabaret bar posted a photo from its bathroom.

“Maybe two hours later… we got like 200 requests for booking,” Ghaith said, with those making reservations mistaking the restroom for the restaurant itself.

It’s easy to understand the mix up: no toilets were visible in the photo, though a crystal chandelier was.

Why Lagos State Government ordered the immediate suspension of all reclamation projects across the state, citing environmental risks

0

The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of all reclamation projects across the state, citing environmental risks.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the directive in a press release issued on Thursday.
Wahab said the ministry observed with concern the proliferation of reclamation activities on wetlands, floodplains, and lagoons statewide.
He noted that affected areas included “Parkview, Banana Island, Osborne, Ikoyi, Victoria Island Extension, Lekki, Ajah, Oworonshoki, and parts of Ikorodu”.
The commissioner warned that many projects lacked proper Environmental Impact Assessment approvals and drainage clearance from the ministry.

He explained that reclamation, though beneficial for housing and infrastructure, carried risks of flooding, erosion, and ecosystem disruption.
“Lagos’s low-lying topography and fragile ecosystem cannot withstand indiscriminate reclamation activities without grave consequences,” said Wahab.

“Consequently, the ministry is by this notice directing all reclamation projects across the state, with or without EIA approval and drainage clearance, to be suspended immediately.

“All approved Reclamation Projects across the State must be submitted for proper documentation and monitoring, while all ongoing and intending ones must be subjected to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process with issuance of approval letter and drainage clearance from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources,” he stated.

He warned that non-compliance within seven days would attract strict sanctions, including site decommissioning and arrest of violators.

The commissioner added that the ministry would remove illegal fills, reopen blocked water channels, and prosecute anyone involved in violations.
“Enough is enough,” Wahab added.

Police arrest Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as “Shameleon” over allegations of murder

0

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) over allegations of assault and murder.

The police said the suspect they identified as Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as Shameleon, is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, where discreet investigations into the two cases are ongoing.

The 55-year-old man, according to a statement by the Command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, on Friday, allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and fists to inflict serious injuries.
The victim, who was rushed to the hospital, is said to be on oxygen and still receiving treatment.

“The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Samsideen Oladiti ‘m’, popularly known as “Shameleon”, aged 55, in connection with two violent crimes on Lagos Island involving a case of murder and another of assault occasioning harm,” the statement partly read.

“The suspect is currently in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, for discreet investigation.”
The Command’s deputy spokesman also explained that a separate complaint had earlier been lodged against the suspect over an incident on August 28, 2025.

He noted that during an altercation, Adio allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike another man on the head and face, leaving him with severe injuries.

Oluseyi said that despite medical care, the victim died on September 17, 2025, and his remains had since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

It was gathered that the news of the man’s death triggered protests at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, where sympathisers of the deceased set two of Adio’s motorcycles ablaze, heightening tension in the area.

Worried by the situation, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Olohundare Jimoh, led mobile policemen, tactical squads, and conventional officers to the scene to restore normalcy.

He assured residents that the suspect remains in custody and will be prosecuted once investigations are concluded.

The police boss also appealed to Lagos residents to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that the command is committed to ensuring justice.

Finally, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has arrived in Port Harcourt, the state capital

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has arrived in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The governor arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport at about 11:50 a.m. on Friday, more than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu ended the six-month emergency rule in the state.

He was greeted by a crowd of supporters who had earlier converged at the VIP wing of the Port Harcourt International Airport, awaiting his arrival.

While the House of Assembly resumed sitting on Thursday, Fubara did not show up at the Government House, despite the hundreds of supporters who had gathered to welcome him.

Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, had been away from the governance of the state for six months, after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers on March 18, citing a political crisis.

Tinubu also swore in retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the role administrator.

Ibas, who handed over the reins of power on Wednesday night, urged political actors in the state to embrace mutual respect and dialogue in a state broadcast.

The Rivers State Government House has remained empty

The Rivers State Government House has remained empty as Governor Siminialayi Fubara failed to return to the state after the expiration of the emergency rule imposed on the state by President Bola Tinubu on March 18.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people who came out to welcome the governor back went home in disappointment.
It was expected that the governor, who had been out of the country, would make a stunning return to the state resume office on Thursday. But at press time, Fubara was nowhere to be found around the state.

The outgoing Sole Administrator of the State had earlier, on Thursday, declared the end of his duty in the state and pulled out of the Brick House.
On Wednesday, it was anticipated that Fubara would return to resume his duty as governor of the state, the next day, today.

Thursday, a crowd of people from the state, loyalists of the governor and his kinsmen from the Ijaw ethic nationality stormed the government house’s gate, awaiting the return of the governor.

However, till dusk, the governor did not arrive at the government house or make an appearance anywhere around the state.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the Brick House is now empty, following the governor’s failure to return on Thursday as expected.

A source, within Brick House, who preferred anonymity, said even the Government House Press Corps members, some protocol officers were shut of the facility.

The source said: “Nothing is happening in that place (Government House) now, until the governor resumes. That place is just empty.

“Many workers were not allowed even to enter the government house. It happens like during transitions. Only some security personnel are attached the government house and civil servants working there are around. Until the governor resume, that place will remain quiet.”
