Nothing stops Seyi Tinubu from running for Lagos State governor, while his father is President – Bwala says

0

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala has defended Seyi Tinubu’s political ambitions, saying the president’s son is qualified to contest for the office of the governorship of Lagos State.

Speaking on The Clarity Zone podcast posted on YouTube on Wednesday, Bwala dismissed claims that Seyi’s political relevance is tied solely to his father’s influence, arguing that the younger Tinubu has carved out his own identity as a unifier among Nigerian youths.

“If Seyi Tinubu’s father is the president, what stops him from running for Lagos State governor? Seyi Tinubu can even challenge his father in the next election,” Bwala said.

He described Seyi as “humble and unassuming” despite his privileged upbringing as the son of a former Lagos governor and now Nigeria’s president.

According to Bwala, Seyi has consistently built friendships and supported young people in finding opportunities in government, even those from opposition parties.

“At a point, he was even criticised for the people he brought into government, who were mostly Obidients. That tells you he doesn’t have biases,” he explained.

Bwala also shared that his own history of criticising the Tinubu administration has not strained his relationship with Seyi, describing the president’s son as mature enough to separate politics from personal ties.

He further highlighted that, unlike many children of past Nigerian leaders, Seyi Tinubu has not been linked to scandals or controversies.

“You will never see him attacking people on social media, even though his father is one of the most vilified in recent memory. He has built relationships even with critics of this government,” Bwala said.

He urged Nigerians to judge Seyi based on direct encounters rather than public opinion.

“Until you experience somebody, don’t have an opinion of them. Too many people inherit other people’s problems without any personal encounter,” he added.

Peter Obi has warned that democracy in Nigeria has been hijacked by the elites

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the last general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has warned that democracy in Nigeria is under grave threat, lamenting that it has been hijacked by the elite and reduced to a tool for state capture.

Obi, in a statement released in Onitsha by his media aide, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, said this while delivering a keynote address at the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Annual Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana, themed “What Makes Democracy Die?”
He described democracy as a system rooted in accountability, service to the people, security, education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, but regretted that Nigeria’s democratic practice had strayed far from these ideals.

“Democracy in Nigeria is under threat because it no longer serves the people or holds leaders accountable,” Obi declared. “Regrettably, it has been reduced to a tool for elite state capture, granting access to public resources for private and family interests.”

According to him, democracy dies when leaders stop prioritising citizens’ needs and institutions cease to uphold accountability. “Nigeria is a typical example of this tragic reality,” he added.

The former presidential candidate stressed that reversing the decline of democracy in Nigeria would require the electorate to take governance and elections seriously by voting only for leaders with competence, capacity, character, compassion, and commitment to service.

She admitted that at some point, they both questioned whether their marriage was truly the will of God, as differences and personal growth brought clashes into their relationship. “I began to evolve as a woman, and he, too, was discovering himself. FG Paid poor Nigerians the sum of N330 billion in cash transfers – Wale Edun says

0

The federal government has paid poor Nigerians the sum of N330 billion in cash transfers through the National Social Safety-net Coordinating Office.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, disclosed this while briefing the press, in Abuja, yesterday.

He disclosed that there were about 19.7 million poor and vulnerable households and over 70 million individuals on the National Social Register.

The cash transfers are being done from an $800 million facility of the World Bank.

According to Edun, the cash transfers are part of President Bola Tinubu’s strategies to help poor Nigerians cope with rising prices brought about by the fuel subsidy removal and the floating of the Nigerian.

He said, “This is part of the plan by Mr President to get the social protection programme that he had in mind to help the poorest and most vulnerable through the difficulties caused by the increase in the price level, as we all know, as part of the necessary reforms that were put in place.

“We are pleased to report that the social protection programme, the putting in place of a safety-net to help people cope with the rising price level, is now firmly back on track. “Of the 20 million households on the Social Register, covering about 75 million Nigerians, the programme was for 15 million households, covering 75 million Nigerians. 8.5 million households have now been paid at least one tranche of the funds that were promised to them- N25,000 Naira.

“They have two more payments to go. Some have received two, and some have received three. And following from that, because what has been put in place is a very robust system.

“People are identified biometrically by their NIN- National Identity Number. Secondly, they are paid digitally through their bank accounts or their mobile wallets. So it’s a very robust and sustainable system.”

The minister added that households yet to be paid would receive theirs before the end of the year.

“The expectation is that the other 7 million or so households will be paid by the end of the year,” he said.

Edun described the social safety net as an important aspect of every modern economy.

He said, “What Nigeria now has is a robust system of reaching whichever targeted set of people that we want to reach to help the poorest and the most vulnerable on a long-term basis.”

Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has launched a scathing critique of the Nigerian national team

Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has launched a scathing critique of the Nigerian national team, blaming its tactical deficiencies and lack of team cohesion for its failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

The Super Eagles’ World Cup qualifying campaign was marked by a string of underwhelming results, including draws against Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and South Africa.

With two matches remaining, Nigeria sits third in Group C with 11 points, trailing South Africa, which has 17 points, and Benin Republic, which has 14 points.

The former Everton star did not hold back, highlighting the team’s midfield imbalance and its over-reliance on individual brilliance as major factors in its struggles.

“When we look at the team, we have too many defensive midfielders and not many attacking midfielders,” Yakubu said on Sunday Oliseh podcast.
Yakubu, who scored 21 goals in 58 appearances for Nigeria, stressed that the lack of creativity in midfield puts unnecessary pressure on strikers like Victor Osimhen.

“If I play in this team, I will struggle to score goals because when I look at Osimhen when he plays, he is fighting because he knows already when he sees the goals he scores, and he has to hustle by himself,” he explained.

He further criticised the team’s overall playing style, describing it as overly dependent on individual efforts rather than collective play.
“We don’t play like a team, it’s individual football we play, and we want the players to make magic,” he added.

Yakubu remains Nigeria’s fourth-highest international goalscorer and has continued to use his platform to call for a more balanced and creative approach to the Super Eagles’ play.
