Emeka Nwokedi: Nnamdi Kanu and the drama foretold

0

When, in March, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, ostensibly bowing to pressure by the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, reassigned his trial from Justice Binta Nyako, some of us warned that there wouldn’t be an end to Kanu’s shenanigans.

Expectedly, ahead of the resumption of his trial, Kanu has begun a new chapter of his theatrical displays. All the displays are aimed at one thing: discrediting the judiciary and, by extension, eroding public trust in that all-important arm of government. This didn’t escape the attention of Hon. Justice Haruna Tsammani.

The unauthorised recording of court proceedings by Linda, Kanu’s sister in-law, and the false claims made by Barr. Aloy Ejimakor, is consistent with their pattern of contempt for the courts. The loud silence of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to these calculated attempts to manipulate or blackmail judges and prosecutors to achieve malevolent results.

Comically, the failure of this IPOB’s strategy of intimidation and blackmail forced the group to beat a retreat and resort to propaganda.

Their recent request to Justice Kolawole Omotosho that the charges against their tin god be dismissed on the grounds thatthey stem from the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act of 2013, which has since been repealed, is, to say the least, ludicrous. Their claim falls flat in the face, especially when placed side by side with the nod given by the Supreme Court that Kanu’s trial be allowed to continue.

Upon realising that their strategy had run into a brick wall, IPOB appears to have changed gear, now using Kanu’s health as a tool of propaganda. They are crying wolf over Kanu’s health, believing that it might buy them some time, delay Kanu’s trial, and attract public sympathy.

Fully aware that Kanu has a strong case to answer, IPOB obviously believes that feigning illness for their lord and alleging mistreatment by the DSS would serve their best interest.

Some IPOB officers have discreetly expressed worry that Kanu, who is talking about health issues, has reportedly sacked two highly experienced doctors he recruited to manage his health.

In short, the purpose of all the allegations by IPOB is to prolong Kanu’s trial. It would appear that this approach isn’t about seeking justice, but placing a huge premium on undermining accountability and damaging the reputation ofNigeria’s judiciary.

The Supreme Court judge, Justice Lawal Garba, who delivered judgment okaying Kanu’s repatriation from Kenya, is sure to be Kanu’s next target. One should not be in a hurry to forget how the separatist leader blackmailed Justice Binta Nyako.

Last month, Kanu’s friends, under the guise of three non-profit organisations petitioned US President Donald Trump. In the petition, they singled out five judges for attacks. The judges are: Haruna Simon Tsammani, Hamma Barka, Mohammed Lawal Garba, and former CJN Olukayode Ariwoola.

As October 10, 2025, nears, Nigerians need to become more discerning. Kanu is expected to unleash his dramatic skills. Intimidating and blackmailing judges is Kanu’s stock in trade.

Certainly, IPOB would double down on the dissemination of false and malicious reports intended to mislead the public. Of course, they would do things aimed at harassing and blackmailing the trial judges, in addition to spreading false disinformation. Kanu’s past acknowledgement that decisions made by the Supreme Court are legally binding is noteworthy. This acknowledgement reinforces the idea that there are no more justifications for evading accountability.

The trial’s outcome will have far-reaching effects. According to a report published by Amnesty International in 2025, more than 1,800 people lost their lives in the Southeast region between 2021 and 2023. IPOB’s Indigenous Peoples Liberation Army and ESN have been linked to these deaths. The positive resolution of Kanu’s case is crucial. It is the responsibility of the Nigerian judiciary to ensure that a fair trial is conducted in court, to uphold the rule of law, and to deliver justice to those who have passed away.

Opinion: Addressing ethnic profiling and tribal tensions in Nigeria

0

On July 27, 2024, a popular X (formerly Twitter) user, @Lagospedia, tweeted a disturbing message. The user claimed the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest, scheduled for 1 to 10 August 2024, was an Igbo-led attack on Lagos State. As a result, @Lagospedia demanded that all Igbos in Lagos and other southwestern states vacate the region within 30 days.

This is not the first time such a threat has been made. In 2017, the Arewa Youth leaders also issued a 90-day ultimatum for Igbos to leave northern Nigeria. These ultimatums violate the constitutional provisions that guarantee Nigerians’ rights to move freely and reside in any part of the country. If these actions continue, ethnic tensions could escalate into large-scale violence, forced displacements, and encourage genocide.

To address this problem, the government must enforce the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, which criminalises ethnic threats.

The government should also establish specialised units to monitor and respond swiftly to such threats. Furthermore, the federal government should collaborate with civil society, state governments, and local traditional leaders to promote unity and discourage divisive rhetoric. The National Orientation Agency should also introduce inter-ethnic collaboration programmes at the local government level. These programmes can help bridge differences and foster understanding among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.

In the aftermath of the #EndBadGovernance protest on August 4, 2024, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu warned that the law would catch up with those inciting ethnic tensions. However, concrete steps need to be taken following the president’s statement. Section 26(d) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 makes it a crime to threaten any person or group based on race, color, ethnicity, or religion. The Act prescribes a punishment of a 5-year jail term, a N10,000,000 fine, or both. Yet, since its enactment, the law has been rarely enforced. A clear example is the 2023 elections in Lagos when political thugs profiled and threatened non-indigenous ethnic groups, demanding that the non-indigenes leave the state. The lack of enforcement, however, must change.

The federal government must immediately begin to prosecute individuals spreading ethnic hate online. To achieve this process, the government should establish a specialised unit within the Office of the National Security Adviser to monitor, identify, investigate, and respond to ethnic threats. The unit would be responsible for mobilising security personnel to protect vulnerable populations. In composing this unit, the government must include civil society organisations that advocate for human rights and freedom of speech to prevent abuse of power.

The government must also enforce strict legal safeguards that limit monitoring to public forums. These safeguards must ensure that private communications remain protected and are not accessed without due process. Upon identifying and investigating cases of ethnic threats, the specialised unit should hand over suspected ethnic offenders to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution.

Leaders in government and traditional institutions also have a critical role in fostering ethnic unity. Ethnic hate thrives when perpetrators enjoy implicit or explicit support from grassroots communities or authorities.

Publicly condemning and prosecuting offenders, however, sends a clear message that ethnic hatred will not be tolerated. For example, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, publicly condemned @Lagospedia’s posts and asked security agencies to investigate and prosecute the person(s) behind the account. Such decisive actions weaken the local support base for ethnic hatred and reinforce societal values of inclusion and respect. Hence, leaders at all levels should consistently denounce and reject ethnic hatred.

Expanding opportunities for ethnic collaboration is equally crucial for fostering long-term tolerance among Nigeria’s tribes. Rwanda’s Umuganda programme is a good example of ethnic collaboration, where citizens from different ethnicities unite to work on community projects. Similarly, the NOA can introduce quarterly inter-ethnic community programs at the local government level to build trust between different ethnicities. These forums would bring together people from diverse ethnic backgrounds to discuss local issues, collaborate on communal projects, and resolve shared concerns.

Nigeria must show its commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of all its citizens, including non-indigenes, residing in any state.

Addressing ethnic threats is not only about maintaining peace. It is essential for preserving the nation’s identity and ensuring a future where our diversity is a source of strength, not division. The government’s failure to act decisively risks plunging the country into avoidable chaos and undermining its aspirations for sustainable development.

Davido has been officially announced as the sole Nigerian artist to perform at the 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

0

Afrobeats sensation David Adedeji Adeleke Jr., better known as Davido, has been officially announced as the sole Nigerian artist to perform at the 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, marking a remarkable achievement in his global journey.

Joining him in this stellar lineup are global stars such as Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, Karol G, and prominent acts like BIGBANG, FKA Twigs, The Strokes, David Byrne, and Disclosure, all set to headline the festival. This marks a historic moment as it’s the first time any of these artists will take centre stage at the celebrated event, which draws around 250,000 fans to the Californian desert.

The festival’s full lineup, revealed earlier this week, has ignited waves of excitement throughout the international music scene, and for lovers of African music, Davido’s appearance is particularly noteworthy.

This will not be Davido’s first encounter with the Coachella stage; the self-proclaimed Omo Baba Olowo (O.B.O) was originally scheduled to perform in 2019 but was unable due to scheduling conflicts. His rightful return in 2026 as a fully featured artist in this star-studded lineup is being celebrated as an overdue recognition.

As the only Nigerian representative at Coachella 2026, Davido’s participation underscores the unstoppable ascent of Afrobeats on the global stage. With chart-toppers like Unavailable, Fall, and Feel, Davido has cultivated a diverse international fanbase.

Set to unfold over two weekends—April 10–12 and April 17–19, 2026, in Indio, California—Coachella 2026 promises to deliver one of its most eclectic lineups yet. Davido will grace the stage on both Saturdays—April 11 and April 18—showcasing his electrifying performance style at California’s Empire Polo Club. This highly anticipated appearance follows his ‘5IVE Alive Tour,’ which commenced in July and spans 12 venues across North America until November.

Adding to the festival’s allure, British-Nigerian rapper Little Simz, known for her Afrocentric flair on tracks like “Point and Kill,” will also perform. Having transitioned from a cult figure to a crossover sensation, her critically acclaimed projects have been bolstered by her notable acting on Top Boy. Expect unforgettable performances from her on Sundays, April 12 and 19.

The remarkable British-Kenyan pop star PinkPantheress is also set to take to the stage on Saturdays, April 11 and April 18, known for her engaging performances. As this will be her first appearance at Coachella, she’s sure to make a memorable mark. Sabrina Carpenter will kick off the festival on Friday, followed by Bieber and Karol G headlining Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Earlier this year, African artists including Tyla, Seun Kuti, and Amaarae captivated audiences at Coachella 2025 with their unique performances. With a rich lineup expected for next year’s festival, Coachella’s reputation for showcasing diverse talent is only set to grow.

Farooq A. Kperogi: Tinubu, Next INEC Boss, and Liman Controversy

0

By Farooq A. Kperogi

An older friend of mine, a denizen of the circles of power, told me a few days ago that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was considering a retired judge from Nasarawa State to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He named him as Justice Abdullahi Mohammed Liman, whom, I am embarrassed to admit, I had never heard of.

Apparently, Liman has been a loadstone for controversies and has had robust mentions in the news media, as I’ll show shortly. I probably never paid attention to his name because my background as a former reporter and editor predisposed me to pay more attention to judgments than to judges unless the judges stand out for any number of reasons.

Judicial reporting is one of the few exceptions in journalism where active constructions are discouraged in headlines and leads. For instance, we write, “a man has been sentenced to prison,” not “a judge has sentenced a man to prison” in news leads. The judgment is considered more important than the judge.

After admitting my ignorance of Liman, my friend shared possible motivations for his rumored choice. I can’t reveal them publicly, but I wasn’t persuaded.

Given the unabashed Yorubacentricity in several of Tinubu’s consequential appointments, I questioned why he believed the buzz that Tinubu would consider a northerner, however pliable or susceptible to manipulation he may be, for so momentous a position as INEC chairman.

After all, this is the man who will midwife the 2027 election in which most of the opposition to Tinubu’s second-term ambition will come from the North.

In April this year, a fabricated story claimed that Tinubu had appointed one Professor Bashiru Olamilekan as Yakubu’s successor. The presidency disclaimed it, and a Reuters fact-check on April 15 confirmed that “Professor Bashiru Olamilekan,” described as an “Ogun-born professor and media guru,” simply doesn’t exist.

The photos used to identify him were actually those of Senator Ajibola Basiru, who told Reuters he is a “full born Osogbo Oroki man” who is “neither a media guru nor born in Ogun!”

Still, a few days after my conversation about Liman, I saw a list circulating on social media showing the geographic distribution of past electoral commission chairmen since 1964. Amplified by Tinubu supporters, the list highlighted that the South-South has dominated in the last 61 years and that no one from the Southwest has ever been appointed.

Observers have suggested that the list was intentionally compiled and pushed online to prepare public consciousness for a possible Southwest appointment. This ensures that Tinubu can’t credibly be accused of ethnic favoritism if he picks from his geo-cultural backyard.

I shared the list with my friend, implying that Tinubu was unlikely to appoint someone outside his ethnic comfort zone, especially given his desperation for a second term and his disregard for criticism about the national spread and fairness of his appointments, what I once called his Lagos-centric Yorubization.

Yet I also noticed that the North-Central, where Liman hails from, has never produced an INEC chairman. And no president, prime minister, or military ruler has ever appointed someone from his own region to lead the electoral body. That leaves open the possibility that Liman could indeed be in contention, assuming there’s any credibility to the rumor.

Leadership development courses

I had filed this discussion away until I watched Buba Galadima’s September 16 interview with Arise TV, where he made oblique references to Liman’s impending announcement as the next INEC chair.

“Come November, there are rumors all over the place that this government is nominating a just retired court of appeals judge who is known for notoriety to be the chairman of INEC,” Galadima said. “I wish it is not true. Because if that man becomes the chairman of INEC, be rest assured that this government is inviting a civil war in this country.”

Civil war? That’s obviously political hyperbole. But could he be referring to Justice Liman? Every detail fits. Liman just retired from the Court of Appeal. He is a magnet for judicial controversies. And, days earlier, someone had told me Tinubu was considering Liman for the position of INEC chairman.

Curiously, Liman chose early retirement despite the judicial retirement age being raised to 70. Was this in preparation for the rumored INEC post?

Why, then, did Galadima warn that if Liman is appointed, Nigerians should “forget about elections… [b]ecause there would be no elections in this country, and it will create chaos”? There was also a sense of alarm in the voice of my friend who told me Liman might be the next INEC chairman.

I looked up Liman and found a May 26, 2024, Daily Trust analysis titled “Kano emirate: 7 controversies trailing Justice Liman.” In it, John Chuks Azu, Daily Trust’s legal editor, chronicled how Liman halted Governor Abba Yusuf’s move to reinstate Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Kano emir, which sparked a palace standoff that hasn’t abated and ignited jurisdictional debates.

The report also noted that the National Judicial Council had dismissed a misconduct petition against him, which paved the way for his promotion to the Court of Appeal.

Liman also drew fire for halting both Abdullahi Ganduje’s suspension as APC chairman and his arrest over the 2018 “dollar stuffing” video. This fact suggests that he has close associations with Ganduje.

In Edo, the Daily Trust report pointed out, NCP governorship candidate Peters Omoragbon accused Liman of “misconduct and dereliction of duty” for delays in ruling on an INEC case.

Liman’s Port Harcourt home (he is said to be close to Nyesom Wike) was among those raided by the DSS in 2016, when agents claimed they recovered $2 million, an allegation he denied. He quipped that he would have resigned his job as a judge if he had that much money stashed at home.

And in 2015, his sentencing in the N25bn corruption trial of Michael Igbinedion stirred outrage when the principal defendant walked away with fines while his co-defendant got 20 years.

Clearly, Galadima’s beef with Liman is more about partisan politics than about patriotic fervor. Daily Trust’s analysis suggests that Liman is cozy with Ganduje and his political associates in Kano.

Galadima, meanwhile, is aligned with Kwankwaso, Ganduje’s adversary. Liman’s appointment may indeed spark a “civil war” of sorts in Kano politics, since his antecedents suggest he would tilt toward Ganduje’s camp. But nationally? I doubt it. If past brazen electoral manipulations didn’t lead to civil war, this wouldn’t, either.

That said, if Tinubu is seriously considering Liman, he risks imperilling the credibility of the 2027 election two years before it takes place. An electoral umpire must not carry the baggage of unconcealed partisanship.

None of the past INEC chiefs, including those that later turned out to be total partisan disasters, came to the job with overtly partisan affiliations. Tinubu shouldn’t start now. If he cares at all about his post-tenure reputation, that is.

Seven pupils have been injured after a suspected improvised explosive device went off at Benue Primary School

0

Seven pupils have been injured after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) went off at LGEA Primary School, Ater Ayange in Ukum LGA of Benue state.

Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, said the incident occurred at about2 pm on September 16.

The publication said the explosion happened when some pupils found an object on the school premises and began playing with it, unaware it was an explosive.

Makama said the victims were taken to a hospital in Zaki-Biam where they are receiving treatment and said to beresponding well.

The publication added that the incident was not reported to the police until September 18 when the divisional police officer in Ukum got information and deployed a patrol team to the school and hospital.

When contacted, Udeme Edet, police spokesperson in the state, told newsmen that the command’s explosive ordnance disposal unit has been deployed to sweep the area and determine the nature of the device.

Edet added that the criminal investigation department has also opened an inquiry into the incident.

“The police is already on top of it. The EOD team were sent to Ukum LGA to sweep the scene for possible recovery of other hidden explosive objects,” Edet said.

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has declared his willingness to rejoin the All Progressives Congress

0

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared his willingness to rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC) — but only if the terms are clearly defined and implemented.

“If you said I should enter APC, I want to join APC, and I didn’t say I will not join APC even now, but for what position?” he asked.

Making this known in Kano, Kwankwaso reminded Nigerians of his role in the formation of the APC, stressing that he and his allies endured threats from the EFCC, ICPC, police, and SSS during the struggle to establish the party.

He, however, disclosed that he was not desperate to dump his current party but was open to alliances based on honesty and fairness.

The NNPP leader stated, “We’re not in a hurry to leave the NNPP; we’re happy. However, if there is anyone who wants to work with us truthfully and will not abandon us as before, we are ready.”

Senator Kwankwaso also added that even the PDP could be reconsidered if it admitted past mistakes and made open commitments.

He then lamented that despite helping the APC rise to power, his group was sidelined during Buhari’s eight-year rule.

According to him, “We were not given anything, not even a thank you. When we left for PDP, even there, we were denied a Zonal Chairman.

“They thought if we left, we would enter a bush and die. But today, whoever mentions Nigerian politicians must mention Kwankwaso,” he said.

Kwankwaso’s remarks are already stirring fresh debates about possible political realignments ahead of the next elections.

FULL TEXT: Fubara’s statewide broadcast after reinstatement

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Friday, addressed Rivers residents after the expiration of his six-month suspension by President Bola Tinubu.

Here is the full speech:

STATEWIDE BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY, SIR SIMINALAYI FUBARA, GSSRS, ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2025

My dear good people of Rivers State.

Recall that Rivers State was placed under a six-month emergency rule, declared by Mr. President, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on the 18th of March, 2025, following the intense political crisis in our State.

  1. It is without doubt that the last six months had been enormously challenging for our dear State under the emergency rule.
  2. As your Governor, I accepted to abide by the state of emergency declaration and chose to cooperate with Mr.President and the National Assembly, guided by my conviction that no sacrifice was too great to secure peace, stability, and progress of Rivers State.
  3. This was why I also resisted the pressure to challenge the constitutionality of the declaration of a state of emergency, the suspension of democratic institutions, and all other actions that we endured during this difficult period.
  4. In the course of the six-month period, Mr. President graciously brokered the peace process with all the parties successfully. Our Leader, His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and I, as your Governor, have all accepted to bury the hatchet and embrace peace and reconciliation in the best interest of our dear Rivers State.
  5. We believe the political crisis is now behind us and that peace and stability have once again returned to Rivers State, though not without the hard lessons learnt from the emergency rule.
  6. The responsibility now rests squarely on us: the Government, the State House of Assembly, political leaders and stakeholders to put aside our differences, work for the common good, and advance the interests of our people above all else. We have a duty to ensure that the peace we have all embraced remains permanent in our dear Rivers State.
  7. On behalf of the Government and the good people of Rivers State, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. President for his fatherly disposition and decisive interventions in resolving the political crisis and for graciously restoring full democratic governance to our State.
  8. Personally, I will never take Mr. President’s kindness for granted, and for that, I hereby reaffirm my utmost loyalty and eternal gratitude.
  9. To those who have expressed genuine fears, frustrations, and uncertainty over the nature of the peace process, I assure you that your concerns are valid and understood. However, nothing has been irretrievably lost; there remains ample opportunity for necessary adjustments, continued reconciliation, and inclusiveness. We must all remember the saying… ” the costliest peace is cheaper than the cheapest war”.
  10. Accordingly, let us, therefore, embrace this moment as a fresh beginning. Let us work together with renewed hope and determination to build a stronger, more peaceful and prosperous Rivers State. I assure you that we will continuously work towards ensuring that we carry everyone along.
  11. Despite the turbulence, you are aware of the credible milestones our administration achieved in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other key sectors over the last two years.
  12. Our immediate responsibility is to return to the path of governance and development by completing the projects which we started by ensuring none of them is starved of funds or neglected, thereby reviving our economy, protecting lives and property, and improving the wellbeing of all Rivers people.
  13. I commit to working harmoniously with the Rivers State House of Assembly to recover lost grounds and accelerate the social and economic advancement of our dear State. I also renew my pledge to serve with the fear of God, humility and a high sense of duty.
  14. I wish to sincerely thank you, the resilient people of Rivers State, for your patience, courage, and peaceful conduct during the six months of emergency rule.

UK’s foreign intelligence service MI6 on Friday launched a “dark web portal” to try to recruit spies

0

The UK’s foreign intelligence service MI6 on Friday launched a “dark web portal” to try to recruit spies in Russia and around the world by offering a them secure communication channel.

The “Silent Courier” portal lets anyone with access to sensitive information relating to terrorism or hostile intelligence activity to securely contact the UK, the agency said.
Instructions on accessing the portal are available on the verified YouTube channel of the Secret Intelligence Service, better known as MI6.

“Our virtual door is open to you,” outgoing MI6 chief Richard Moore said to potential spies as he launched the portal.

The intelligence agency, which achieved global fame through Ian Fleming’s fictional agent James Bond, advised users to utilise the secure Tor browser to access the dark web, and to use devices and email accounts not linked to themselves so as not to rouse suspicions.

If Tor is banned in their country, then people are advised to utilise VPNs, added the advice, which was posted in multiple languages.

“As the world changes, and the threats we’re facing multiply, we must ensure the UK is always one step ahead of our adversaries,” said foreign minister Yvette Cooper.

“Now we’re bolstering their efforts with cutting-edge tech so MI6 can recruit new spies for the UK — in Russia and around the world,” she said.

Moore has previously warned that his agency had “recently uncovered a staggeringly reckless campaign of Russian sabotage in Europe” as tensions continue to deepen over the war in Ukraine.

Nigerian man jailed 71 months in U.S. for $1.6m romance fraud

0

A Nigerian national, Adetomiwa Seun Akindele, has been sentenced to 71 months in a United States federal prison for defrauding a Colorado woman of over $1.6 million in a romance scam. He will be deported to Nigeria upon completion of his jail term.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado said Akindele, 37, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering. He was also ordered to pay $1,692,945 in restitution and forfeit an equivalent amount.

Court records show that between January and October 2018, Akindele posed as “Frank Labato,” a wealthy Italian-American businessman, on a dating website.

He convinced a widowed Colorado woman to provide financial assistance, claiming he faced a work-related crisis abroad.

At his direction, the victim opened a cryptocurrency exchange account and transferred over $1.6 million. Akindele laundered the funds through various exchanges before converting them back into U.S. dollars and depositing them into his bank accounts. He issued fraudulent promissory notes to reassure the victim of repayment.

“This sentence both serves justice to the victim and helps prevent this individual from scamming someone else,” U.S. Attorney Peter McNeilly said.

FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek described the case as “egregious,” noting that romance scammers “prey on trust and emotion to exploit victims.”

The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Charlotte N. Sweeney.

Akindele is expected to be deported after serving his sentence, officials confirmed.

Champions League: 5 key takeaways from Barcelona’s win over Newcastle

0

Barcelona’s hard-earned 2–1 win over Newcastle United in the Champions League was about more than three points. It was a statement of resilience, tactical growth, and individual brilliance on a difficult night at St James’ Park. From Marcus Rashford’s revival to Joan García’s heroics in goal, the Spanish giants proved they could thrive even without teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Here are five key takeaways from the match:

  1. Barcelona can cope without Yamal
  2. For much of last season, the teenager was seen as irreplaceable. His absence often coincided with poor results. Butin Newcastle, Barcelona showed they could still produce a cohesive and dangerous performance, even if hiscreative spark was missing.
  3. Pedri and de Jong: Europe’s finest midfield duo
  4. Pedri and Frenkie de Jong once again dictated the rhythm of play. De Jong orchestrated the build-up from deep, while Pedri controlled the tempo higher up the pitch. Their understanding remains one of Barcelona’s greatest strengths.
  5. Rashford silences the doubters
  6. This was a defining night for Marcus Rashford. After a quiet first half, he grew in confidence, scoring twice with superb positioning and clinical finishing. He walked away as Man of the Match — a reminder of his quality on the big stage.
  7. Newcastle rue missed chances
  8. Eddie Howe’s side started with intensity, pressing Barcelona aggressively and unsettling their defence. They carved out opportunities in the opening 20 minutes, but García’s sharp reflexes denied them. Against top opposition, those missed chances proved costly.
  9. Joan García: Barcelona’s bargain signing
  10. The young goalkeeper’s performance raised eyebrows. His saves kept Newcastle at bay early on and gaveBarcelona a platform to grow into the game. The question now is how Barcelona managed to secure such a talent at such a value.

A significant away win

Barcelona’s victory was not just about individual moments. It was about composure, tactical flexibility, and defensive solidity in one of Europe’s most hostile arenas. Without their brightest young star, they still looked like a team capable of going deep in the competition.

Ubi Franklin speaks on the relationship between Davido, Wizkid and Burna

Music executive, Ubi Franklin has shared his opinion on Nigerian superstars, Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy, widely regarded as Afrobeats’ “Big 3.”

Speaking in a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, Franklin explained that it would be difficult for the trio to collaborate, stressing that their positions as the “Big 3” make them rivals rather than collaborators.

The talent manager noted that there are fierce competitors in every industry, using the rivalry between top Nigerian banks to buttress his point.

He, however, claimed that the beef between the Afrobeats stars isn’t beyond entertainment, emphasing that he has never heard his associate Davido gossip about Wizkid and Burna Boy to his inner circle and he believes it’s mutual.

“It would be difficult for Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy to come together. I will speak for Davido, I have never heard him for once said something ill about Wizkid or Burna Boy. And I’m sure it’s the same for them. But the environment [industry] they are will make it difficult for them to work together.

“It’s like the rivalry between the top banks in Nigeria. In every industry, there is the big 3,” he stated.

EPL: Guardiola wants no repeat of Man City ‘disaster’ at Arsenal

0

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said his side can ill afford a repeat of the “under-14s” defending that saw them thrashed 5-1 by Arsenal in February.

Guardiola’s men travel to the Emirates again on Sunday, already trailing the Gunners and defending champions Liverpool in the Premier League title race.

City lost two of their opening three games to Tottenham and Brighton but have bounced back with comprehensive victories over Manchester United and in the Champions League over Napoli.

The thrashing at the hands of his former protege Mikel Arteta was one of the low points in a miserable campaign for Guardiola.

City failed to win a trophy for the first time since 2017 and finished a distant third behind Liverpool and Arsenal.

“The game last season, we started like many times last season, like an under-14s team and gave away a thousand million goals,” said Guardiola when asked to reflect on his last visit to the Emirates.

“After we were, a lot of the time, pretty good considering how it was last season, but the last 15-20 minutes were a disaster.

“We forgot to do what we had do and it was easy for Arsenal. I want to compete to be a better team than we were last season.”

Both Liverpool and Arsenal massively outspent City in the transfer window in the battle for Premier League supremacy and Guardiola took the opportunity for a dig at those who claim his six titles since arriving in England are due to the budget at his disposal.

“The only thing I want to say to my friend Mikel Arteta is if he wins the title it will be just because he spent money, not because he worked hard or because of his players,” Guardiola said sarcastically.

“It’s like Liverpool too. If Arne (Slot) wins it again, it will be because he spent a lot of money, right? Because it’s not just Man City that (spend), right?”

Arteta left behind working as Guardiola’s assistant in 2019 and has slowly built Arsenal back into a force capable of competing for major trophies.

But he has still just won one piece of silverware, the 2020 FA Cup, after finishing second in the Premier League for the past three seasons.

“He found the club in a (certain) way and step-by-step, window by window, Arsenal is getting better,” added Guardiola.

“Last season in Europe, they made an incredible step forward and they are for me the most solid team. They don’t make mistakes in the back.”

City begin the weekend three points behind Arsenal and six adrift of leaders Liverpool.

The challenge facing Guardiola’s side is heightened by the fact they played their Champions League opener 48 hours after Arsenal, who won 2-0 at Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday.

Guardiola refused to be drawn into the scheduling debate but conceded it could be difficult for Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to start three games in eight days on his return from a major knee injury.

“With him in the pitch we feel more comfortable but, of course, after coming from a tough injury you have to be alert andwe will decide on Sunday how he does feel.”
