UK to ban Nigerian students, others from bringing families – Here’s why

0

The United Kingdom is set to introduce restrictions that will stop Nigerian students, other nationalities studying in the country from bringing their families over.

According to an exclusive report by The Sun UK, this crackdown will be announced this week.

The crackdown will see all Master’s students and many other post-grads banned from bringing family over.

However, the ban will not apply to Ph.D. students, whose courses usually last between 3 and 5 years and are very highly skilled, the UK local media reported.

This follows the reports that net migration into the UK has skyrocketed to 1 million with Tory MPs asking the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, “to get a grip on the rocketing numbers.”

To get a hold of the climbing numbers, UK ministers are said to be expected to announce the immigration clampdown on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Sun reports that “Rishi Sunak is expected to come out fighting on immigration – pointing out they are figures he inherited as they date back to the year ending December 2022 – two months after he became PM.

“There has been an explosion in the number of people coming to Britain piggybacking on their relative’s student visa.

“Students brought 135,788 family members to Britain last year – nine times more than in 2019.

“Last year, 59,053 Nigerian students brought over 60,923 relatives.”

“We have got to get a grip,” a Tory MP told The Sun on Sunday.

Kano State Government has reacted to the audio of phone call between Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Ibrahim Masari

0

The Kano State Government has reacted to the audio of phone call between Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Ibrahim Masari, a former vice presidential placeholder candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the leaked audio, the governor was heard lamenting being treated unfairly by President-elect Bola Tinubu, over the meeting with Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Tinubu  and Kwankwaso met for four hours in France, discussing a wide range of issues, including the possibility of the NNPP Presidential Candidate joining the incoming cabinet.

Reacting, the governor had said there was noise all over Kano over the meeting between Tinubu and Kwankwaso.

Ganduje said even though Masari had told him of the possibility of such meeting, there was nothing he could have done about it.

In the audio, Masari, an ally of Tinubu, was then heard pacifying Ganduje and urging him not to be angry over the development.

But in a statement om Saturday evening, Malam Muhammad Garba, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Kano state, said, “the exaggerated publicity on the purported audio clip was the handiwork of paid agents trying to unturn the so-called ‘conversation’ with a view to causing disaffection between the two political gladiators.”

He said from all indications, some people who were not comfortable with the cordiality among Tinubu, Ganduje and Masari were bent on exploiting the situation to their advantage.

Garba also maintained that the governor and the President-elect had since realised “this mischievous attempt to cause disaffection between them, and would not allow this sound working relationship which has been waxing stronger particularly at this critical time to be destroyed by some self-centered individuals.”

The commissioner called on members of the APC and the general public to disregard “such attempt and remain calm and loyal to the party to ensure the successful inauguration of the President-elect.”

Jonathan says insecurity was his worst nightmare during his time in office between 2010 and 2015

0

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says insecurity was his worst nightmare during his time in office between 2010 and 2015.

Jonathan made the disclosure on Friday during the commissioning of a 22-kilometre road project in Taraba State. The dualised Yola-Wukari road encompasses six pedestrian bridges and a flyover bridge, among others.

Commending Governor Darius Ishaku on what he described as a job well done, the former president revealed that his worst nightmare as president of the country was insecurity.

He said he had sleepless nights in a bid to resolve the issues and encouraged residents to live in peace for more development to thrive, adding that road infrastructure is key to any development.

Inaugurating the road project, followed by the flag-off of the construction of a heavy-duty vehicles park on the outskirts of the state capital, Jonathan insisted that security is in the hands of the people.

The former president also expressed satisfaction that Taraba was gradually returning to the “good old days” of peaceful coexistence and tolerance.

For his part, Ishaku said the road projects embarked upon by his administration was to link rural communities to the metropolis to explore the agricultural potentials of the state.

The inauguration comes less than two weeks to the inauguration of a new administration in Taraba State.

The inauguration of new infrastructure in the state is seen as one of the major activities undertaken by Ishaku to make an indelible impression.

Ishaku, in his remark, said his administration’s emphasis on road construction targets economic growth, especially in rural communities by revamping the agricultural potentials of taraba.

The governor used the opportunity to counter statistics putting the state as one of the most indebted nationwide.

“It is extremely unfair for the president-elect to be portrayed in bad light” – Abdulmumin Jibrin on Ganduje’s leaked audio

0

Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin, a Rep-Elect, has said Governor Abdullahi Ganduje consented to the meeting that President-elect Bola Tinubu held with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso in France.

Multiple media organizations had reported how Tinubu and Kwankwaso met for four hours on Monday.

Ganduje had expressed reservation over the meeting, saying Tinubu had decided to see Kwankwaso, his estranged benefactor, as an alternative.

In a leaked audio with Ibrahim Masari, former Vice-Presidential Placeholder of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ganduje had said Tinubu ought to consult or invite him to the meeting with Kwankwaso.

But in a chat with Daily Trust, Jibrin, who was part of the meeting in France, said Ganduje confirmed to him that Tinubu consulted him before the meeting took place.

“Lke every other Nigerian, I was very shocked when I listened to that audio but I think the most important thing is that I want to confirm to you that Governor Ganduje was consulted.

“And he himself confirmed this to me, told me in clear words that the President-elect invited him and told him that he is planning meeting with Kwankwaso and asked he Ganduje if he had any objections to it, and Ganduje told me that he told the President-elect that he has no any objection.

“So it is extremely unfair for the president-elect to be portrayed in bad light before the public by Governor Ganduje who knows very well that the president consulted him before that meeting because he confirmed that to me clearly.

“It is very very unfair to the president-elect, and I do not believe that the Mr president will abandon anyone who supported him… but again, what is paramount is national unity, cohesion and development.”

Dele Sobowale: Baba, go straight to Niger, forget Daura

0

The evils that men do live after them…”- William Shakespeare, 1564-1616, in JULIUS CAESAR

Outgoing President Buhari announced a few weeks ago that he might relocate to Niger Republic – if people disturb him too much in Daura. Since then, some commentators have assumed he was serious with the declaration; a few said he was only joking and his comments should not be taken too seriously. I take a different attitude.

Irrespective of whether he meant it seriously or as a light joke, I think he should fly straight to Republic of Niger – where a befitting Presidential Lodge is probably waiting for him. After eight years as President of Nigeria, during which he did Niger more good than Nigeria, he should, quite rightly, expect a warmer welcome there than Daura or any place else in Nigeria.

Daura is particularly dangerous. The Buhari, who left eight years ago, was a relatively poor and struggling ranch owner. He and his family lived behind low fences and felt perfectly secure within. His eight years in office, and the rapid deterioration of security in Nigeria in general and Katsina State in particular, have turned Daura into one of the most dangerous places one of the richest men in Nigeria today can hope to live in peace.

Just last week, bandits, driven from Zamfara State, reportedly were relocating to Katsina State which now ranks among the top four most dangerous states in Nigeria. The outgoing state Governor had raised alarm several times during his tenure about the situation in the state. He shares power with hoodlums.

If Buhari returns home, it will be without the battalion of soldiers and policemen guarding him now. Like Obasanjo and Jonathan, before him, he will become relatively vulnerable and attract the attention of the hoodlums – just as ants invade premises where sugar is loosely stored.

His movements would be severely restricted because the bandits also know where to find big money from making a raid. Reports from reliable sources living in nearby communities, but, who travel to Daura at least twice a week indicate that the walls surrounding the premises have been raised and CCTV cameras mounted at every angle. Unfortunately, those constitute the minimum requirement for the family’s safety and absence of fear. Indeed, heightened security merely turns the Buhari family into prisoners in a palace. Moving out freely is the problem.

Given his age, Buhari might not want to venture out much. But, the same cannot be said of Mrs. Buhari – who had developed a taste for travelling abroad and staying for weeks – with total safety assured as the wife of a President wherever she went. That security blanket will be removed the minute the new President is sworn-in. Now vastly richer than in 2015, and the bandits know it, they present, individually and collectively, targets too big to ignore by criminal bounty hunters.

The Nigerian alternatives are Kaduna and Abuja. Even El-Rufai will not stay a day longer in Kaduna after handing over. So, forget that.

And peace also is the last thing he can expect if he decides to stay in Abuja. Several of his “illegal” activities, which have attracted litigation, as well as others, which will certainly be probed, dictate that he should stay far from where he can be “summoned” by SERAP.

As far as I am concerned, by collecting N22.7tn loan under Ways and Means, W&M, without recourse to the rubber stamp Senate, Buhari has committed an offence which cannot be excused by presidential immunity. The penalties attached to that breach of our laws must be applied to him after leaving office.

TURKEY VERSUS NIGERIA: THE DIFFERENCE IS CLEAR

“The first thing we do; let’s kill all the lawyers.”

William Shakespeare, 1564-1616

Historians call Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, 1881-1938, the Father of modern Turkey. It required an exceptional person to carve a strong nation out of warring factions. Giuseppe Garibaldi, 1807-1882, had earlier been proclaimed Father of Italy. Today, those two nations and their people are highly respected worldwide. We talk about “our founding fathers” in Nigeria; and depending on our inclinations or tribal sentiments, we name at least three or four. Too many cooks will always mess up the vegetable or egusi soup or edikanikon. Perhaps, having so many fathers is our problem – like the child whose paternity is hotly disputed.

Nothing illustrates this better than the recent elections in Turkey and Nigeria. The clear-headed framers of the Turkish constitution made it clear that nobody can become President unless he collects over fifty per cent of the votes cast. The incumbent President received 49.3 per cent of the votes and it is still not good enough – because, in a real democracy, majority of the voters must elect the President. Erdogan might still lose.

By contrast, those who drafted the Nigerian constitution, handed it to the military who imposed the nonsense on us, have left us with a situation in which even a mere 28 per cent might be enough to become the Nigerian President. In Nigeria, we are at daggers drawn over election; there will be no bloodshed in Turkey – irrespective of who eventually gets over 50 per cent of the votes. In Turkey, the real winner will be known immediately after the run-off. The real winner of the Nigerian election might not be known for more than a year. Meanwhile, the shadow of illegitimacy follows the Nigerian President everywhere he goes. Who wants to sign a long term bilateral agreement with a fellow who might not be there in two years?

Turkey’s population is about 85 million; and there was no postponed census. Nigeria’s population is unknown, but now estimated at 220 million. Given a choice, most Nigerians would japa to Turkey; the Turks wishing to relocate to Nigeria might not fill up a luxury bus. If I am asked what makes the difference, without hesitation, it would have to be order. A more orderly society would always be more productive and less stressful than a disorganised one. Turkish Airline is a leading one and generating tons of foreign exchange for the country. Nigeria Air can’t even get off the ground on account of muddled thinking.

One must ask if the framers of our constitution, particularly professors of law, never heard of run-off elections to ensure that the President is elected by majority of voters. Why was that provision excluded from our laws? Let me state clearly that I strongly hold this position and will protest any election in which the wishes of the majority are set aside and a candidate with less than majority is proclaimed winner. It is inherently unjust. Bad politics, based on defective laws, drafted and imposed secretly, will invariably lead a country into economic trouble as a greater percentage of the public revenue is spent trying to solve the problems caused by bad politics.

SWIMMING IN BLOOD IN BUHARI’S NIGERIA

“The first duty of government is the security of lives and properties.”

As Buhari prepares to go, hopefully to Niger Republic, in only two countries is the daily murder of innocent citizens, by lunatics, robbers, bandits and rampaging herdsmen no longer front page news – the United States of America and Buhari’s Nigeria. Though, like John Donne, I believe that the needless death of every man, woman and child diminishes me, still the USA is not my country. I studied, worked and lived there for ten years and voluntarily returned to Nigeria. I don’t wish to live there anymore for any amount of money.

Nigeria, with all her faults, is my country and the only one I owe total loyalty. However, as Buhari’s tenure comes to a dreadful end, it is amazing how human life has become so totally worthless under this terrible leader. Maybe one day I will find the time to write a book documenting the full scale of the atrocities which have become standard fare in Nigeria today.  The following selection from several in just two days should reveal to all of us how bestial Nigeria has become under Buhari.

•        700 deaths, 300 abductions recorded in April  *  Terrorists kill two in fresh Southern Kaduna attack  *  Communal clash: Police confirm killing of four in AÍbom *  Village head, 49 others abducted in Niger  * Nasarawa cleric, 37 others killed by herdsmen buried  *  Herders’ attack: We’re under siege , Nasarawa communities cry out. I spent over ten years working and living in various parts of the North. It was the peace and tranquility in the region, more than anything else, which attracted me to the region. Until 2016, I cannot remember a single year when herdsmen were accused of killing 300 people in twelve months. Today, they are accused of wholesale murders of Fellow Nigerians. The President of Nigeria, who doubles as Life Patron of the Miyetti Allah, has never mentioned herdsmen by name; neither has he directly condemned their alleged genocide.

Left to me, he should go directly to Niger Republic; so that we might have a chance to bring peace and personal safety back to Nigeria. This is no joke.

El-Rufai vows to continue demolishing structures till May 29th

0

Governor Nasir El-Rufai has expressed his readiness to continue sacking bad workers in Kaduna State and demolishing illegal structures until his last day in office.

Speaking on Saturday in Kaduna during a book launch, El-Rufai explained that he was bent on continuing the move so that his successor would not need to do it again but to continue with developmental projects for the overall benefit of the people of the state.

According to him, “Any bad thing we find, we will remove it so that the next governor does not need to do it again. Watch out till the eleventh hour when we shall quit office, we will continue to sack bad persons and remove bad things.”

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, in his remarks, described El-Rufai as a fearless and outspoken politician that spoke truth to power and said it as it was.

Singer Davido has revealed the relationship he had with his billionaire father after his mother’s death

Nigerian music star, David Adeleke, fondly known as Davido, has revealed that his billionaire father became overprotective of him after his mother’s death.

The singer said he feels his dad made a promise to his late mother to take care of him.

He made this known in an interview with Real 92.3 FM.

According to him, his father’s over-protectiveness was out of fear.

He said, “I come from a family where there is oh ‘go to school and after, you go work for dad’. I am from a Christian, business family. My dad didn’t know I was doing music till like two years after I started recording. He saw it and he was like ‘How sad’?

“I look up to him. He is like everything to me. I didn’t want to always disappoint him. All my older brothers and sisters have graduated with a Master’s degree. I was expected to do the same.

“I think it was out of fear. He loved me so much. My mum passed on when I was really young and till today I always feel like he made a promise to mum like ‘take care of my baby’. That type. He is always overprotective.

“He is a man that has lived his life in a certain way for so long. I am the first-generation entertainer in my family. So, for somebody of that calibre. He’s a billionaire. He is thinking ‘Why are you wasting your time? Just go to school and come work’.”

He also revealed that his late son, Ifeanyi Adeleke, inspired the artwork of his latest album ‘Timeless’.

Ifeanyi drowned in a pool at Davido’s residence in Banana Island, Lagos State, in October 2022.

“The artwork represents a lot of things in my life. I lost my son last year. He loved nature; like trees. His best animal was elephant.

“And ‘Timeless’, if you look at the art cover, you will see elephant, you will see a lot of trees, and then you will see a bird on the left side; that represents him,” he said.

Word-for-word: Here’s the transcript of the conversation between Governor Ganduje & Masari Over Tinubu’s meeting with Kwankwaso

0

An audio in which Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Ibrahim Masari, former vice presidential placeholder candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), discussed the meeting between President-elect Bola Tinubu and Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), is currently trending.

Tinubu and Kwankwaso met for four hours in France, where they discussed a wide range of issues, including the possibility of the NNPP Presidential Candidate joining the incoming cabinet.

The audio of the conversation has generated different reactions across social media.

Ganduje, who expressed how unhappy he was with the development, said Tinubu had considered Kwankwaso as an alternative.

Below is the complete transcript of the conversation:

Ganduje: Hello

Ibrahim Masari: Your Excellency

Ganduje: How is work and everything? How is Abuja

Masari: Glory be to God, I just came into Abuja

Ganduje: Kano is all over with noise.

Masari: Your Excellency, I told you what is going on, but you denied it. What should I say? I told you what’s happening, but you denied it and expressed surprise over it. How would this be happening, and so on?

Ganduje: Even if I heard it, there is nothing I can do about it. Isn’t it?

Masari: But you can speak to him at that time, you can call him and talk to him.

Ganduje: To tell him what? I can’t do anything since Kwankwaso has become an alternative to us. There is no problem.

Masari: It hasn’t reached that stage. That’s impossible

Ganduje: Because we don’t have government?

Masari: Are you coming on Thursday?

Ganduje: It’s because of him that we lose reelection.

Masari: You should be patient. Even your enemies know that he wasn’t fair to you.

Ganduje: The right thing is that even if he will grant Kwankwaso audience, it should be in our presence. We should be invited. Did you understand? Even if it is symbolically.

Masari: Your Excellency, you should be patient. I wish you safe journey

Ganduje: Everything is in the hands of God

Masari: You’re right

Ganduje: All these calculations

Masari: They are very wrong. Everybody will be scared to work with him

Ganduje: This man did not end well with Jonathan. He gave him work but ended up painting the government as corrupt.

Masari: Yes, you’re right

Ganduje: Because he wasn’t allowed to partake in corruption, it’s not a matter that he was clean.

Masari: What brought the issue of he is clean? The truth of the matter is that they weren’t fair to you. You should just be patient but leave it until you arrive.

We’ve started the discussion, he called me and I told him that Mr. President, you’re wrong. He said, “What have I done again?” He started explaining it to me that it was SLS and Chagaury that led them and so on.. I asked him whether he had spoken to you, and he said no. Is he seeing these things. Leave it until you come, you know this conversation on the phone is unsafe.

I wish you a safe journey. You should just keep mute as you did, maintain your maturity by not speaking on the matter

Ganduje: What intelligence told me is that they want his intervention to scuttle the case at the tribunal

Masari: There is that game plan. It’s not his right. You have that right, Excellency.

Ganduje: He’s not showing interest over the matter.

Masari: Excellency, you should let this matter go, I don’t like these conversations on the phone. Allow it when you come tomorrow or next tomorrow, then we sit down and discuss. If the need arise,s we can call him.

Ganduje: When is he coming back?

Masari: Wallahi, I don’t know, we have spoken, not that good, and I even showed him my anger.

Gunmen launch another attack, kill 2 policemen in Imo

0

Gunmen ambushed and killed two policemen at the popular “Okpala Junction’’ at Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area of Imo on Saturday.

The attack came one month after five policemen and a couple were killed at the same junction on April 21.

On March 27, gunmen ambushed and killed five personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at the same Ngor-Okpala Council Area.

An eyewitness of Saturday’s murder said businesses in the community quickly shut down as everyone scampered to safety.

Police spokesman in Imo, ASP Henry Okoye said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Muhammed Barde, had ordered a manhunt for the assailants.

“It was an ambush; two of our personnel gallantly paid the supreme price while one, shot on the leg is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

“They were ambushed by hoodlums suspected to be members of the proscribed Independent People of Biafra and Eastern Security Network.

“In a protracted gun duel that ensued, the hoodlums escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries,’’ Okoye said.

He added that one of the operational vehicles used by the hoodlums had been recovered.

“The vehicle was riddled with gunshots and was smeared with blood.

“This evidently suggests that our operatives actually gave the hoodlums a fierce battle.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered a manhunt for the assailants with a view to arresting them and bringing them to face the full wrath of the law.

“We are assuring members of the public that sooner than expected, that the perpetrators of the dastardly act will be arrested and brought to book,’’ Okoye stressed.

He urged members of the public to go about their lawful activities, noting that normalcy had returned to the area.

“We have equally sent another patrol team to the place to restore security confidence,’’ he said.

Buhari appoints Oba of Benin as NOUN Chancellor

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has been appointed by the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government as the chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

The appointment was communicated to the Oba when Prof. Olufemi Peters, the Vice Chancellor of the University and other management staff paid him a courtesy visit at the palace in Benin.

During the visit, Prof. Olufemi had given insight into the workforce plan of the school and assured the Oba that fortunes of the university would improve tremendously with him as the Chancellor.

“The reason this university was established by the Federal Government is to bring university education to as many Nigerians, wherever they are and whatever their circumstances or social hindrances may be.

“We are in every state of this country, serving every area. We have over 120,000 students. It is the biggest university in Nigeria,” he had stated.

In his response, the traditional ruler accepted his appointment and commended President Muhammadu Buhari for finding him worthy of the position.

Oba Ewuare II promised to bring his wealth of experience to bear in the discharge of his duties and leverage on his experience during his diplomatic sojourn, to improve teaching and learning in the university with the support of its management team.
