Aham Njoku: APC, PDP And The ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ Campaigners

Recently, the Peoples Democratic party (P.D.P) tried to make political gain out of a statement credited to Chief Audu Ogbeh, that some members of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) campaigners are members of all All Progressive Congress (APC). Further, the PDP claimed that the presence of Hadiza Bala Usman one of the coordinators of BBOG campaigners at the presidential election declaration of Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja finally put a seal to that assertion.

The above and other similar attempts to vilify the BBOG campaigners is not only bizarre but indeed ridiculous. First, it must be made crystal clear that the 1999 constitution of Nigeria guarantees every citizen the right to Freedom of Association. The fact that a person belongs to an association that is urging the Federal Government to take steps to rescue innocent and defenceless citizens who were abducted by militant insurgents does not in anyway preclude them from belonging to a political party of their choice.

An adjunct to this is to point out that there is nothing also wrong for a citizen to belong to an opposition party. In civilized countries like America and Britain both the ruling parties now and the opposition parties have at one time or the other reversed their roles either as the government in power or the opposition party.Indeed the PDP is one of the opposition parties in Lagos State, Ogun State, Edo State, Oyo State, Anambra State, Imo State, Rivers State, kwara State, Osun State and Kano State to mention but a few.

Another important point to note is that the 1999 constitution guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of speech. The BBOG campaigners have not done anything wrong by exercising this right when they continually ask the federal authorities to act and rescue these girls. Drawing from the above, the laughable attempt by some spin-doctors to castigate the campaigners clearly stands reason and logic on its head.

Again, before these spin-doctors and propagandists deceive the gullible within the citizenry, it must be stated clearly that what the BBOG campaigners are doing is right, good and should be commended. Since the PDP government was elected to protect the citizens of Nigeria and provide for their welfare, it is wrong foranybody to criticize them for urging the federal government to carry out its constitutional duties. While the federal Government sees the action of these campaigners as an irritant, the campaign has brought many advantages with it. Since the campaign, no major abduction like those of Chibok girls has taken place again. Also major super powers like America, Britain and France and indeed the entire world’s attention has been drawn to the Nigerian Insurgency. The safe school initiative championed by former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is another gain from the campaign.

Recall that during the reign of the military dictator, Field Marshall Idi Amin Dada in Uganda, some Isreali citizens were hijacked in an air plane and kept in Uganda against their will. The Isreali Government carried out a major , well- planned, well-coordinated and well-executed military offensive to rescue its abducted citizens. In what is now known as the famous “90 Minutes At Entebe”, the isreali military and intelligence service in a move that made its citizens proud and raised nationalism and patriotism to an all time high, rescued all its citizens with only two casualties.

The PDP Federal Government should stop engaging in empty propaganda and discharge its constitutional duties to the citizens accordingly. They would have achieved so much in bringing the insurgency to an end if they had used the energy, time and resources channeled towards fighting the peaceful BBOG campaigners who are mainly mothers and women in addressing the menace of insurgency. As they continue to throw brick – bats at these campaigners, Nigerians are keenly watching and would not be taken for a ride. As a former American President once said, “You can fool some of the people all the time, all the people some of the time, but not all the people all the time.”

PDP Makes U-Turn, Acknowledges TAN, Congratulates Group On Pro-Jonathan Rallies

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wishes to congratulate the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) for successful conclusion of its sensitization rallies across the country in support of our sole Presidential candidate, His Excellency, Dr. Gooduck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR.

The party in a statement signed by Olisa Metuh and made available to NewsWireNGR, the party notes that through these rallies, the numerous achievements of the President Goodluck Jonathan-led PDP administration were adequately projected to the Nigerian populace and the international community.

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party had before now asked members of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigerians and other groups in support of the second term of President Goodluck Jonathan not to include officials of the party in their campaigns.

Metuh, had said it was wrong to link officials of the party with the campaigns of the support groups.

But in a turn around, the party Monday said TAN movement, which is a novelty in the nation’s political development has indeed deepened democracy and broadened citizen participation in the polity.

“The collection of over 17 million signatures in support of President Jonathan during the rallies, is a clear demonstration of the far-reaching acceptance of our standard bearer and his party.” Statement reads.

The party concluded “The PDP particularly notes the unique contributions of Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, the leader and the brain behind the TAN movement even as we recognize the willingness of TAN to work with our great party in furtherance of our collective objective ahead of the 2015 general elections.”

In a press statement issued by his media office in Abuja on Monday and made available to NewsWireNGR, the former Vice President said the Government of Nigeria, Lagos and Rivers States’ governments should be commended for this remarkable achievement in the face of the grimmest medical crisis that the country found itself dealing with.

Atiku said he was superbly impressed with the amazing manner Nigeria had proved to the world that it had the will, commitment and human resources to deal with critical challenges of this nature.

He explained that when leaders work together for the common good of the society, there was always a ray of hope for the nation.
The former Vice President also extolled the virtues of the medical personnel during the battle to control the spread of Ebola. He said he was touched by the sacrifices of these medical personnel who sacrificed their own lives to save others.
However, Atiku Abubakar advised the entire country not to rest on its oars until the last vestiges of the Ebola virus are destroyed.
He said every country must demonstrate the capacity to carry its fate in its own hands instead of relying on the outside world, and that he was proud Nigeria demonstrated that capacity.

In the aftermath of the declaration of Nigeria as an Ebola free nation, President Goodluck Jonathan has dedicated the achievement to all health workers, volunteers and ordinary Nigerians.

This was contained in a statement released by Dr Reuben Abati on Monday. “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan welcomes today’s declaration by the World Health Organisation that Nigeria is now officially Ebola-free after 42 days without any incidence of the Ebola Virus Disease.

“President Jonathan dedicates the certification to the many patriotic health workers, volunteers and ordinary Nigerians who worked tirelessly, some of them paying the ultimate price, to stop the deadly virus in its track after it entered the country in July this year.

“The President seizes this opportunity to also reiterate his appreciation of the contributions of state governments, WHO and other
international health organisations, relatives of infected persons and other Nigerians who either courageously underwent the rigours of being quarantined or complied with all directives issued by health authorities to defeat the virus.

“He believes that Nigeria’s globally- acclaimed success against Ebola is a testimony to what Nigerians can achieve if they set aside their differences and work together, and calls on Nigerians to strive to replicate the unity of purpose and all-hands-on-deck approach adopted against Ebola in other areas of national life.”

place and that health officials should continue to actively screen persons entering the country through its air, land and sea borders for any sign of the virus.

Rev. Titus Pona, state Chairman of CAN said this in a communique at the end of a three day fasting and prayer for Christians in Maiduguri.

He said that since the sect have shown interest in negotiations, the government should go ahead and discuss.

“We the Christian faithful in Borno commend the efforts of the Federal Government for agreeing with the Jama’atul Ahalis Sunna Lida’awati, popularly called the Boko Haram, for a ceasefire,” he said.

Ebola Scourge: Ellen Sirleaf Johnson Pens Emotion-Filled Letter To The World

Liberian President, Madam Ellen Sirleaf Johnson has authored an open letter to the world about the deadly Ebola Virus. Speaking from an informed position as the head of a country which is among those worst hit with the virus, the President of the West African national called for all communities across the world to unite in containing the virus.

Here’s the letter, it’s a must-read:

Dear World,

In just over six months, Ebola has managed to bring my country to a standstill. We have lost over 2,000 Liberians. Some are children struck down in the prime of their youth. Some were fathers, mothers, brothers or best friends. Many were brave health workers that risked their lives to save others, or simply offer victims comfort in their final moments…

There is no coincidence Ebola has taken hold in three fragile states – Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea – all battling to overcome the effects of interconnected wars. In Liberia, our civil war ended only eleven years ago. It destroyed our public infrastructure, crushed our economy and led to an exodus of educated professionals. A country that had some 3,000 qualified doctors at the start of the war was dependent by its end on barely three dozen. In the last few years, Liberia was bouncing back. We realized there was a long way to go, but the future was looking bright. Now Ebola threatens to erase that hard work. Our economy was set to be larger and stronger this year, offering more jobs to Liberians and raising living standards. Ebola is not just a health crisis – across West Africa, a generation of young people risk being lost to an economic catastrophe as harvests are missed, markets are shut and borders are closed. The virus has been able to spread so rapidly because of the insufficient strength of the emergency, medical and military services that remain under-resourced and without the preparedness to confront such a challenge. This would have been the case whether the confrontation was with Ebola, another infectious disease, or a natural disaster. But one thing is clear. This is a fight in which the whole world has a stake. This disease respects no borders. The damage it is causing in West Africa, whether in public health, the economy or within communities – is already reverberating throughout the region and across the world. The international reaction to this crisis was initially inconsistent and lacking in clear direction or urgency. Now finally, the world has woken up.

The community of nations has realized they cannot simply pull up the drawbridge and wish this situation away. This fight requires a commitment from every nation that has the capacity to help – whether that is with emergency funds, medical supplies or clinical expertise.I have every faith in our resilience as Liberians, and our capacity as global citizens, to face down this disease, beat it and rebuild. History has shown that when a people are at their darkest hour, humanity has an enviable ability to act with bravery, compassion and selflessness for the benefit of those most in need. From governments to international organisations, financial institutions to NGOs, politicians to ordinary people on the street in any corner of the world, we all have a stake in the battle against Ebola. It is the duty of all of us, as global citizens, to send a message that we will not leave millions of West Africans to fend for themselves against an enemy that they do not know, and against whom they have little defence. The time for talking or theorizing is over. Only concerted action will save my country, and our neighbours, from experiencing another national tragedy. The words of Henrik Ibsen have never been truer: “A thousand words leave not the same deep impression as does a single deed.

Yours sincerely,
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
