Governor Adeleke said that internal political wrangling within the Peoples Democratic Party is being resolved amicably as a family affair

0

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has said that internal political wrangling within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is being resolved amicably as a family affair.

Adeleke stated this while addressing journalists on Monday in Abuja after presiding over the inaugural meeting of the Accommodation Sub-Committee of the PDP National Convention Committee.

The governor stressed that the party remains united and fully prepared for its forthcoming national convention.

Adeleke serves as Deputy Chairman of the Convention and Chairman of the Sub-Committee.

According to him, all arrangements have been finalised for a smooth and successful convention scheduled for October 15 and 16, emphasising that the PDP maintains a long-standing culture of internal organisation and respect for due process.

“We have just concluded the inaugural meeting of the Accommodation Sub-Committee.

“Everyone was present, and we have resolved all outstanding issues to ensure the convention proceeds smoothly. We believe it will be very successful,” Adeleke said.

He also dismissed reports of divisions within the party.

“I can assure you that we are meeting and resolving our issues internally. It is a family affair. We do not want anyone outside to add sugar, pepper, or salt to the matter. The PDP is a family, and we know how to manage our affairs,” he added.

Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of the Commanding Officer of the 202 Tank Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Saidu Paiko, along with several soldiers

0

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of the Commanding Officer of the 202 Tank Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Saidu Paiko, along with several soldiers, following a fierce confrontation with Boko Haram insurgents in the Kashimri area of Bama Local Government Area, Borno State.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Major Appolonia Anele, troops of Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled a planned terrorist attack but suffered heavy casualties in the process.

“Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, under the 21 Special Armoured Brigade, on October 17, 2025, thwarted an attempted assault by Boko Haram terrorists around the Kashimri general area.

“Unfortunately, the encounter came at a cost, as the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Saidu Paiko, and a few other gallant soldiers paid the supreme price,” the statement read.

Major Anele explained that the troops engaged the insurgents in intense combat, neutralising several fighters and destroying multiple terrorist hideouts in the region.

The operation, she said, prevented what could have been a devastating attack on civilians and critical infrastructure.

“The troops’ bravery frustrated the terrorists’ plans to disrupt peace and socio-economic activities in Bama and surrounding communities.

Some of the fleeing terrorists sustained gunshot wounds as our forces maintained operational dominance,” she added.

The Army spokesperson described the fallen officers as heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect the sovereignty and stability of Nigeria, assuring that their legacies would never be forgotten.

“The Nigerian Army deeply mourns these courageous men. Their sacrifices embody the spirit of service and patriotism.

“We will continue to honour their memory as we intensify efforts to eradicate terrorism from our nation,” Major Anele stated.

She further noted that the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, describing them as “fathers, brothers, and sons who showed exceptional courage in the face of danger.”

Oluyede reaffirmed the military’s unwavering resolve to sustain the offensive against all terrorist elements until lasting peace is achieved in the North-East and across the country.

The Army also urged the public and media outlets to refrain from circulating images of the fallen soldiers until their next of kin have been properly informed, in order to preserve their dignity and respect their families’ privacy.

Orji Uzor Kalu, has called on his colleagues in the Senate to provide for a six-year single term for the President and state governors

0

Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Orji Uzor Kalu, has called on his colleagues in the Senate and the House of Representatives to amend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide for a six-year single term for the President and state governors.

Senator Kalu, who is a member of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review and Amendment, made the call in a video interview he posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

He said the move would reduce political tension, promote stability, and allow elected leaders to focus on governance rather than electioneering.

“In my private opinion as a person, I would like to appeal to my colleagues on this committee, chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jubril Barau, that our members in the Senate and the House of Representatives, chaired by Hon. Benjamin Kalu, should come together and agree to do the six-year single tenure,” Kalu stated.

“Because people are busy fighting after four years. They are fighting for another term. Let everybody who is coming know that he is just coming for a six-year single term, and there will be no rancour or problems. Let us devote most of our time to giving Nigerian people what they want.”

Kalu further argued that the single-term arrangement would reduce corruption and ensure that public officials focus on improving the welfare of citizens.

“Everybody needs enjoyment. I want the Nigerian people to have the enjoyment of democracy,” he said.

“That single tenure can give them what they want, provide food on their table, provide adequate transport, provide access to movement for them, and security.”

He also urged lawmakers to consider Nigeria’s economic realities when making constitutional decisions rather than copying Western models.

“A single term is the best tenure to go with, and that will give confidence in our democracy. We must not do what the American Constitution is saying. We must change some of those things in the American Constitution because we are in a developing country,” Kalu said.

According to the lawmaker, Nigerians “are suffering because we want to do what the presidential system of America is doing, and our economy cannot carry it”.

“I see a lot of people in the executive arm in a hurry to acquire more wealth to be able to run for a second term. This (single term) will stop it,” he said.

Kalu suggested that the reform could take effect either in 2027 or 2031, depending on when the National Assembly and stakeholders reach a consensus.

“We can start this from 2027 or 2031, I don’t care. Even those that are governors now can run for a six-year single tenure from 2027 or 2031. It doesn’t make any (different) meaning.

“If we decide, we can amend the constitution to start from 2031, or we can amend it to start from 2027. It is for the good of Nigerians,” he said.

He added that his proposal was borne out of a desire to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and not for personal political benefit.

“Nigerians should start appreciating for us to do what is for the benefit of our people. I don’t care the name anybody will call me. I will always speak and say the truth,” Kalu maintained.

“I said that in Africa, Nigerian journalists are the best, and I still stand by it. I said that in Africa, the Nigerian judiciary is the best, and I still stand by it. We have to stand up to speak the truth.”

The proposal for a single tenure for the President and governors has been a recurring issue in Nigeria’s political discourse.

Advocates argue that it would help curb the high cost of elections, minimise political tension, and reduce the tendency for incumbents to manipulate electoral processes in their bid for re-election.

In 2011, then-President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration floated a similar proposal for a single six-year tenure, thoughhe clarified it would not apply to him if passed.

The idea was, however, widely criticised and eventually shelved, with opponents claiming it could entrench incumbents or destabilise the transition process.

Critics of the idea maintain that a single term could deprive citizens of the opportunity to renew a performing leader’s mandate, while supporters argue it ensures fairness and compels leaders to deliver results within a defined period.

Niger State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly disguising as a woman online to defraud unsuspecting victims

The Niger State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly disguising as a woman online to defraud unsuspecting victims, in a case highlighting the growing trend of social media scams in the state.

The suspect, Victor Ugwu of Easy Life Street, Kaduna Road, was intercepted on October 16, 2025, by a patrol team from the Maje Division while involved in a public argument with a local resident, identified as Peter.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer for Niger Command, Wasiu Abiodun, on Sunday.

“On October 16, 2025, at about 6pm, a patrol team attached to Maje Division, while on routine patrol along Kaduna Road, intercepted Victor Ugwu in a public argument with one Peter of the same area,” Abiodun said.

According to the statement, Peter told officers that he had approached Victor within the past year to link him with a female colleague of Victor’s.

Rather than connecting the two parties, Victor allegedly dressed as a woman, took photos of himself, and sent them to Peter on social media, requesting money.

“Surprisingly, Victor chose to dress like a lady, took self-pictures, and forwarded them to Peter through social media, requesting money.

“During the investigation, a search was conducted in Victor’s house, and a wig and female clothes were recovered,” Abiodun said.

Victor reportedly admitted to sharing the pictures with multiple contacts on Facebook and TikTok as part of a dating scam.

He also sought to increase his social media followers and views for monetisation purposes.

“He confessed that he shared the pictures to his contacts on Facebook and TikTok for a dating scam, and to also achieve one thousand viewers and followers for monetisation.

“The case is under further investigation,” the police spokesperson added.

The incident underscores the evolving tactics of cybercriminals in Nigeria, including the use of social media platforms to manipulate victims and exploit trust for financial gain. Police have cautioned residents to verify identities online and avoid sending money to persons they have not met in person.

In a separate but related law enforcement success, the Niger State Police also recovered a stolen vehicle along Kaduna Road on the same day.

Abiodun said on October 16, a report was received at Maje Division indicating that a white Golf vehicle with registration number RSH 442 FD was stolen from where it was parked at Hayin-Kaduna.

“The police patrol team mobilised and searched along Maje-Dikko Junction to Kaduna Road. Fortunately, the vehicle was found abandoned and recovered to the police station.

“The complainant confirmed it as the stolen vehicle. Investigation is ongoing to identify the perpetrator,” Abiodun concluded.

The Niger State Police Command has urged residents to exercise caution, particularly on social media, and warned that those involved in fraudulent activities would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Police disperse #ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow protesters after regrouping in Abuja

Police officers on Monday dispersed protesters demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra , Nnamdi Kanu, at the Utako area of Abuja.

The protesters, who had earlier been forced to flee after police fired tear gas canisters at them around the Maitama area, later regrouped at Utako to continue their demonstration.

However, armed operatives again moved in and dispersed them.

The demonstrators, made up of civil rights activists and members of pro-democracy groups, were part of the #ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow campaign aimed at pressuring the Federal Government to comply with the 2022 Court of Appeal judgment that discharged and acquitted Kanu.

Earlier in the day, police had fired multiple rounds of tear gas at protesters and passersby near the Transcorp Hilton and adjoining streets in Maitama.

The development created panic, forcing commuters, traders, and motorists to run for safety.

After regrouping at Utako, the protesters continued chanting solidarity songs and displaying banners before security agents again used tear gas to scatter them.

Security has since been tightened across the Federal Capital Territory, with soldiers, police, and operatives of the Department of State Services stationed at strategic locations including Eagle Square, the Federal Secretariat, and the Three Arms Zone.
