Kwara State government has closed down 45 public schools following a series of bandit attacks in some communities across the state

0

Amid the rising insecurity, the Kwara State government has closed down 45 public schools following a series of bandit attacks in some communities across the state.

The Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB), Prof. Sheu Ibrahim Adaramaja, made this known on Tuesday in Ilorin during the Inter-Ministerial Press Briefing Report organised by the Ministry of Communications.

Adaramaja said the affected schools are located in communities such as Babanla, Baba Sango, Sangbe, Oke-Ode, and other areas that have recently witnessed security threats.

He stated that the decision to close down the affected schools is to safeguard the students and teachers from being attacked by suspected bandits in those communities.

He explained that teachers from the affected schools had been relocated to safer areas to justify their monthly salaries and ensure continuity of teaching activities.

The SUBEB chairman also revealed that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration had approved the 2025 promotion for teachers in the state to boost their morale and enhance academic performance in public schools.

In addition, Adaramaja announced that the government has abolished the payment of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levies in all public schools.

SaharaReporters previously reported that hundreds of residents, including youth and community leaders of Patigi Local Government Area in Kwara State, took to the streets last week Friday to protest the worsening state of insecurity that has left their communities in fear and their hospital without doctors.

The protesters, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, gathered at the town center to express their frustration over what they described as unending killings and kidnappings that have plagued the area for months.

SaharaReporters reports that they accused the state government of neglecting the people of Patigi despite repeated appeals for intervention.

According to the demonstrators, the General Hospital in Patigi has been deserted by doctors who fled the town due to the escalating violence.

The protesters alleged that armed Fulani attackers had been terrorising their villages, making it unsafe for residents to go to their farms or move freely, especially at night.

They said they noticed new and unfamiliar faces among the Fulani settlers at Kara Market, sparking fears of more attacks.

Community elders, joining the youth in the protest, appealed to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to take immediate action to restore peace and security in the area.

They warned that unless urgent steps were taken, the insecurity could lead to total economic collapse in Patigi and other parts of Kwara North.

They noted that anyone claiming that Kwara State is peaceful is not telling the truth. The youths lamented that they are being killed and kidnapped daily, while people are forced to pay ransoms worth millions of naira as their investments continue to perish.

They also criticised Senator Sadiq Umar, who represents Kwara North Senatorial District, accusing him of misrepresenting the situation before the Senate.

The demonstrators called for the relocation of the Kara Market, which they said has become a hub for suspicious activities, and demanded the deployment of more security personnel to patrol rural communities and forest areas where kidnappers are believed to be operating from.

They urged traditional rulers, lawmakers, and security agencies to work together to end the insecurity, warning that continued silence from authorities could lead to more loss of lives and property.

One of the protesters stated, “We, the youth of Patigi, together with our leaders, are appealing to the state government for urgent intervention. We are being killed day and night due to persistent banditry carried out by armed Fulani attackers.

“We want the Kara market in Patigi to be relocated because we have been seeing unfamiliar faces among the Fulani people, and we do not know who they are. We are living in fear, especially at night, as strange people continue to move around our community.

“Because of the insecurity, we find it difficult to go out at night. The situation has also affected the General Hospital in Patigi — due to the killings and kidnappings, all the doctors have fled. There is currently no doctor at the hospital, and our patients are dying. Our lives are no longer safe.

“We can no longer go to our farms because of fear. Our farm produce is getting spoiled as we are unable to harvest them. We are pleading for help from the government, traditional rulers, local government chairman, members of the House of Assembly, and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. Please, come to our aid.

“We are dying. Anyone who tells you that Kwara State or Patigi is safe is not telling the truth. We are not safe. We are being killed every day and night. Please, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, come to our rescue. We urgently need your support.

“Senator Sadiq, you went to the chamber and said Kwara North is safe. It is not safe. We are dying. Our lives are not safe; day and night, we are being killed. There is no day you won’t receive a call from a neighbouring village saying that people have been kidnapped and ransom payments have been made — billions of naira — while all our investments are dying.”

Gunmen Abduct Three INEC Officials, Others On Their Way To Anambra Ahead Of Governorship Election

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted six passengers, including three staff members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), en route to Anambra State for the November 8 governorship election.

The three INEC staff members, identified as Chinenye Orji, Adamaka Anih, and Catherine Temaugee, were travelling from Abuja to Anambra when they were ambushed at Aloma, Kogi State, SaharaReporters has learned.

The driver of the Sienna minibus they were travelling on, in a recorded telephone conversation obtained by SaharaReporters, stated that the kidnappers took over the highway, shot at the bus, and shattered the windshield.

According to him, all occupants of the bus were abducted, including his wife, except himself and an elderly woman who could not walk properly.

The driver later recounted that the kidnappers freed him and the elderly woman after realising she had mobility issues.

The woman, who was also released in the vehicle, said, “We were in the same vehicle with them, going to Awka. The driver and myself were released. It happened a little after 3pm. We left the motor park at 9 am from Utako.

“We stayed briefly at Lokoja to eat. We took Anambra Comfort Line. The kidnappers have taken people custody, laterthey will contact their people. We went to Aloma Police Station. It happened a little after Aloma.”

Meanwhile, sources informed SaharaReporters that the three INEC staff members were deployed to Anambra to print voters’ registers and other election materials ahead of the governorship election.

“Three INEC staff (all ladies) and others have been kidnapped at Aloma, Kogi State. Aloma is located near Benue State. They boarded a Sienna minibus from Utako this morning on official assignment to Anambra State for the forthcoming governorship election before this unfortunate issue happened.

“The incident happened this afternoon, Tuesday, October 21. The kidnappers took over the highway, shot at the car, and shattered the windscreen. Fortunately, the bullets didn’t touch the occupants.”

“The INEC Staff were said to have been deployed to Anambra for the printing of the voters’ register and other materials ahead of the governorship election scheduled for November 8,” the source said.

“The kidnappers took possession of all the occupants of the bus, including the wife of the driver and the driver himself.”

The driver and the elderly woman were reportedly the only ones freed, while the remaining six occupants, including three INEC staff members and the driver’s wife, were taken into the bush.

While the matter has been reported to the police, the kidnappers have not made any demands, and the incident is currently under investigation.

The abduction highlights the growing insecurity in Nigeria, particularly along highways, where kidnappers and bandits often target commercial vehicles.

In Kano State, court force two popular TikTok content creators, Idris Mai-wushirya and Basira Yar-guda to get married within 60 days

The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced its plan for the wedding of two popular TikTok content creators, Idris Mai-wushirya and Basira Yar-guda, after a magistrate court directed it to marry them off within 60 days.

The court’s order followed recent viral videos by the TikTokers, which the state Films and Censorship Board deemed ‘immoral’ and ‘indecent.’

The videos showed the content creators sharing romantic gestures, which authorities deemed contrary to the state’s moral and religious values.

On Monday, a magistrate, Halima Wali, ruled that failing to conduct the marriage within the specified timeframe would be considered contempt of court.

The court also mandated the Chairman of the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board to oversee the implementation of the marriage order.

The two TikTokers were recently arraigned in court for allegedly producing and distributing obscene content on social media.

Mr Mai-wushirya was earlier remanded in prison after the clips showing him engaging in what authorities described as “immoral and demeaning acts” with the female content creator went viral.

The state censorship board stated that the videos violated state laws prohibiting the production and distribution of sexually suggestive or obscene materials.

Wedding plan

The hisbah commander, Aminu Daurawa, said hisbah had invited the parents of the TikTokers as part of the wedding arrangements, as directed by the court.

Daurawa said the relatives of the groom have responded to the invitation. However, they are still waiting for the parents and or relatives of the bride from Zamfara State for their consent before the wedding.

Daurawa said the intending couple will undergo a medical check-up and drug test as mandated by Kano State laws before finalising the wedding.

The hisbah can finalise the wedding in two weeks, announcing that a volunteer has deposited N250,000 as bride price as part of his donation.

Borno commits suicide after she was forced into Marriage

0

Tragedy struck in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State on Sunday evening as a young woman reportedly took her own life after being forced by her father to marry one of his friends.

The heartbreaking incident was made public by renowned counter-insurgency and security analyst Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the case on Monday.

According to Makama, the victim, whose identity has yet to be officially released, ended her life shortly after the forced wedding arrangement was concluded.

“Tragedy struck in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State on Sunday evening, when a young woman reportedly took her own life after being forced by her father to marry one of his friends,” Makama stated

Crediting sources, Makama said the incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m., when the young woman, said to have been under emotional distress, ended her life following pressure from her family to proceed with the arranged marriage.

A local child protection volunteer identified as Bukar Fantami Gubio, also confirmed the incident to Makama and described it as deeply unfortunate and heartbreaking.

He explained that the deceased had previously made it clear she did not want to marry the man chosen by her father, saying she was already in love with someone else of her own choice.

“The emotional pain and pressure she went through as a result of this forced marriage pushed her into taking her own life. It is truly a sad situation that calls for urgent action,” Gubio was quoted as saying.

He called on human rights organisations, law enforcement agencies, and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and take immediate action to ensure justice and prevent similar occurrences.

According to the report, Gubio also appealed to parents and community leaders to respect the rights and choices of young women in marital decisions, stressing that forced marriages remain a major violation of human rights.

“This tragedy is a reminder of the urgent need to protect the rights, freedom, and dignity of young women against all forms of abuse and coercion,” he added.

“Sommie Maduagwu, did not and would never jump from a building,” – Arise TV journalist father calls for thorough investigation

0

Engineer Ifeanyi Maduagwu, the father of the late Arise TV journalist, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, has urged the police and other security agencies to uncover the factual circumstances surrounding his daughter’s death.

He insisted that the accounts being circulated “don’t add up.”

Somtochukwu tragically died on the night of September 29 after unidentified assailants attacked her residence in Katampe, Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

According to reports, she fell from a three-storey building while attempting to flee from the attackers. However, her father has strongly refuted the account.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Igbo in Port Harcourt, Mr. Maduagwu maintained that his daughter’s death was suspicious and demanded a thorough investigation to uncover the truth.

“What I know is that my daughter, Sommie Tochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, did not and would never jump from a building,” he said.

“I believe my daughter was killed.”

The grieving father described his daughter as intelligent, lively, and someone afraid of heights.

“Sommie loved her life so much. If you keep Sommie on top of a table and ask her to jump down, she can’t jump down, let alone jumping down from a three-storey building. That is a lie. I want the police to investigate the incident properly to unravel the truth because the truth is still hidden,” he said.

He lamented that she didn’t get timely help after the incident.

“I heard that when it happened, they called for help, but none came quickly,” he said.

“Even when she was taken to the hospital, they delayed attending to her because they asked for identification papers. All those things broke my heart.”

Her father recalled his last conversation with her.

“We talked about so many things, but what made me happy was that she said she was ready to settle down soon,” he said.

“Somtochukwu cared about others. When she woke up, all she thought about was how to make life better for people. She always said she wanted to change how things are done in Nigeria. She wanted to go into politics someday, maybe even become a senator.”

The remains of the late Sommie on Saturday were laid to rest amid tears in her hometown of Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Sommie was buried after a solemn funeral Mass held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Agulu.

The funeral drew a large crowd of mourners, including family members, friends, colleagues, and dignitaries, including the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Delivering a homily during the service, Rev. Fr. Peter Ezewuzie of St. Theresa’s Parish urged the grieving family to find comfort in faith, describing the late journalist’s life as one of purpose and impact.

“The Lord who created us knows the beginning from the end. He is all-knowing, and some of you may be unhappy that a life has been cut short, but you won’t know if that is how God planned it,” Ezewuzie said.
