Godswill Akpabio says Nigeria’s electoral process recorded tremendous improvement since the PDP was kicked out of Power

0

Senate president Godswill Akpabio has claimed that Nigeria’s electoral process recorded tremendous improvement after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) exited power at the centre.

Akpabio, who was twice elected governor under the PDP and got into the senate under the platform of the opposition party, said this during the second reading of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill at plenary, on Wednesday.

“I’m sure that even myself and Senator Abaribe, who have been around for almost two and a half decades in these electoral matters, I know you don’t care about political party, you win elections in any party.

“You have a lot of experience, but you will agree with me that since PDP left, the elections have improved tremendously in this country.

“I recall, I’ve been close to most of the presidents since 1999, and I recall in 2007, when I won as a governor, our then president, may his soul rest in peace, President Yar’Adua, had to come out publicly to say that the election that brought him as president was totally flawed. He said it was full of inconsistencies and rigging. Since then, we have plugged the holes.”

Akpabio added that although Nigerians still experience setback, the system has improved.

“Imagine this last election, we had to go up to the Supreme Court arguing as to whether winning the Federal Capital Territory was the only reason why you should become president,” he said.

“People were saying, No, win FCT and then you have won the presidency. So, you can lose in 36 states of the federation, but once you win FCT, you have become president. They wasted time, had panels upon panels on television, and at the end of the day, we got to the Supreme Court and back.

“Common sense could have told us that that was not the intent of the Electoral Act.”

Festus Keyamo directs airlines to prioritise serving military personnel over first-class passengers during boarding

0

Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, has directed all Nigerian airlines to give serving military personnel priority boarding on all flights ahead of first and business class passengers.

Keyamo announced the policy on Tuesday in Abuja during a stakeholder meeting on preparations for Nigeria’s aviation centenary celebration and the inaugural Nigerian international air show, scheduled to take place from December 2 to 4, 2025.

Explaining the rationale behind the directive, the minister said the decision was aimed at recognising the sacrifices and dedication of members of the Nigerian armed forces.

“This is what is done in other countries, and it is not a bad thing to emulate. It is the least we can do to recognise our serving military personnel,” he said.

In his remarks, Ibrahim Kana, permanent secretary of the ministry, said the directive would be immediately forwarded to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for implementation.

He described the policy as “brilliant and symbolic”, adding that it would serve as a visible gesture of national appreciation for the military.

Nigeria’s flag carrier, announced it will be prioritising military personnel, passengers with wheelchairs or special needs, and business class passengers in its new boarding process.

Akwa Ibom Rep condemns attacks on Senate President Akpabio

0

The member representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Constituency of Akwa Ibom State in the House of Representatives, Dr Patrick Umoh, has condemned what he described as ‘defamatory’ attacks on Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The online attacks were launched on the Senate President by one Mrs Patience Ibanga Akpabio.

In a statement on Wednesday, Umoh demanded an immediate halt of the “shameful charade” being perpetrated by Mrs Patience Ibanga Akpabio.

The Rep accused the woman of waging an “unprovoked and dishonourable campaign of character assassination” through inflammatory social media posts that he said lacked any factual basis.

Declaring that “enough is enough”, Umoh warned that the tirades not only damage the Senate President but also tarnish the Akpabio family name and the reputation of Essien Udim, one of the three local government areas he represents in the House of Representatives.

Invoking shared cultural values of respect for elders and sanctity of truth, Umoh, who served as Akpabio’s Senior Legislative Aide and later as Special Assistant during his time as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, urged Mrs Akpabio to “reflect soberly on the consequences” of her actions.

Calling on members of the public to discountenance the allegations, Umoh noted that Akpabio’s eight years as governor transformed Akwa Ibom into a “model of progress and modernity”, stressing that his reputation remains intact.

Citing landmark projects in roads, schools, and healthcare, the lawmaker added that Akpabio’s leadership of the 10th Senate continues to exhibit “rare capacity and statesmanship” at a critical period in Nigeria’s history.

How a Hit-and-run driver kills Lagos director days before retirement

0

A director with the Lagos State Government, Serifat Talabi, died four days before her retirement from civil service and at her 60th birthday party.

PUNCH gathered on Tuesday that the woman was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver on Saturday.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened when Talabi was crossing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Redemption Camp in Ogun State.

“She was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver while trying to cross the expressway around the Redemption Camp. Efforts were made to take her to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead,” the source disclosed.

Another source in the agency disclosed that Talabi was supposed to retire on Monday, October 13, but the retirement event was postponed to Wednesday, October 22, to allow the agency’s General Manager to attend.

The source added that she had printed a card inviting her co-workers, relatives, and friends to the event, which also marked her birthday.

A source in the state civil service, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised, told our correspondent on Tuesday that Talabi was the Director of Procurement at the Lagos State Resident Registration Agency.

“She was supposed to retire on October 13, but because the General Manager was not around, she then shifted the date to October 22 so he could attend. Invitations had already been printed and sent to colleagues, friends, and family before the unfortunate incident.”

An invitation card sighted by newsmen indicated that the event was billed to be held at the NERDC Conference Centre, NERDC Road, Ikeja, adjacent to the Fela Shrine.

Meanwhile, The Eagle Online reports that Talabi’s burial arrangements have been announced by her family.

According to information gleaned from a WhatsApp group by the news platform, the wake will be held on October 23, 2025, with the burial service scheduled for October 24, 2025.

Both events will take place at 10, Ore-Ofe Street, Ara Hall Bus Stop, Ibafo, Ogun State.

The spokesperson for LASSRA, Basirat Lawal, did not respond to calls made to her telephone line on Tuesday. A text message sent to her had yet to be replied to as of the time this report was filed.

Similar efforts to reach the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, were futile as she did not pick up calls made to her telephone line. She had yet to reply to a text message sent to her as of the time of filing this report.

NEMA confirms 39 dead, 60 injured in Niger tanker explosion

0

The National Emergency Management Agency has deployed an emergency response following a petrol tanker explosion that claimed 39 lives and left more than 60 others with severe burns in the Essan community, Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.

The tragic incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, along the Bida–Badegi–Agaie road.

NEMA made this known in a post on its X handle on Wednesday.

“The explosion, which happened around 3:45 p.m. along the Bida–Badegi–Agaie road, claimed 39 lives and left over 60 persons with severe burns, including men, women, and children. The victims were reportedly among those attempting to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker when the explosion occurred,” the agency stated.

Confirming the development, NEMA said its Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, immediately directed the Head of the Minna Operations Office, Mr. Hussaini Isah, to activate the rescue team and deploy to the scene to support the Niger State Emergency Management Agency and other responders in rescue operations.

The agency said a multi-stakeholder rescue team has commenced a detailed assessment of the damage in the affected community.

“NEMA’s team, working alongside NSEMA, the Police, NSCDC, FRSC, DSS, local vigilantes, and community volunteers, successfully evacuated the injured victims to nearby health facilities, including the Essan Primary Health Centre, Idris Private Hospital, and the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, for emergency treatment.

“The multi-stakeholder rescue team has commenced detailed assessment of damages in the affected community,” it stated.

While commiserating with families of the victims, Umar warned members of the public to desist from scooping fuel from accident tankers, stressing that such dangerous acts have repeatedly resulted in avoidable deaths and destruction.

She also advised residents and motorists to stay clear of accident scenes and promptly report such incidents to emergency agencies for professional handling.

Earlier, Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State expressed condolences to the families of the victims of a tanker explosion.

Fuel tanker explosions have remained a recurring tragedy in parts of Nigeria, often linked to the dangerous practice of scooping fuel from fallen tankers.

Similar incidents have claimed dozens of lives and injured many others in different parts of the country, including Rivers, Benue, and Ogun states, in recent years.

In January 2025, no fewer than 50 people lost their lives in a petrol tanker explosion along the Dikko–Maje Road in Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State. Earlier, in July 2023, at least eight people were killed in a similar incident in Ondo State, while in June 2025, a petrol-laden tanker exploded opposite the NASFAT junction along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, leaving two people severely injured and six vehicles burnt, causing heavy gridlock on the busy route.

0

The Department of State Services (DSS) has raised the alarm over imminent coordinated attacks by suspected members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) targeting several communities in Ondo and Kogi States.

In a confidential memo dated October 20, 2025, and addressed to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment, Akure, the DSS warned that intelligence reports had confirmed plans by ISWAP operatives to launch simultaneous assaults on selected locations in the two states.

According to the document, the identified targets in Ondo State include Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko in Akoko North West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area.

The report further disclosed that the terrorist group had already begun surveillance operations on potential soft targets in these areas.

The DSS therefore urged security agencies to heighten vigilance and reinforce security measures across the affected communities to prevent any attacks.

“The groups have commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the above mentioned locations. Consequently, there is need to scale up the level of security alertness in the various communities to forestall any untoward situation.

“While above is for your information and further action, accept assurances of the highest regards of the State Director of Security, please,” the memo stated.

The warning was signed by H.I. Kana J, on behalf of the State Director of Security, Ondo State, and copied to relevant military and security formations for immediate action.

The latest alert comes amid renewed concerns over terrorist activities spreading beyond the North-East into parts of the South-West and North-Central regions.

SaharaReporters on Tuesday reported that bandits in large numbers stormed a hospital in Kaduna State in the early hours of Tuesday, abducting several patients and a medical doctor on duty.

Phone snatchers have killed a nurse, Hadiza Musa, the Deputy Head of the Maternity Unit at Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Kofar Gayan, Zaria

0

Phone snatchers have killed a nurse, Hadiza Musa, the Deputy Head of the Maternity Unit at Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Kofar Gayan, Zaria, during an attempt to snatch her mobile phone.

The deceased was attacked while returning from work on Saturday.

Confirming the incident, her husband, Hamza Ibrahim Idris, who works in Abuja, explained that on Saturday, she called to tell him she was going to the salon to make her hair and would also visit an Islamic chemist in Filin Mallawa, Tudun Wada, Zaria, which he approved.

He said their last conversation was around 6 p.m. that same day, after she left the chemist and he transferred some money to her. Afterwards, he could no longer reach her on the phone.

According to him, “I kept calling her line until the following morning when I concluded that her phone battery must have run down.”

After regaining consciousness following the tragic incident on Tuesday, Idris said he later learned that his wife had boarded a commercial motorcycle around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, on her way home, when she was attacked by hoodlums who attempted to snatch her phone.

He explained that there were signs her hands had been squeezed, indicating she struggled to hold onto the phone. He added that she was hit hard on the head, as there were visible injuries and bleeding, which he believes caused her death.

According to Idris, “After she slipped into a coma, they snatched the phone and dumped her by the roadside along Mallawa Eid Ground in Tudun Wada, Zaria. A good Samaritan found her and rushed her to a clinic, from where she was referred to ABU Teaching Hospital, Shika, where she was confirmed dead.”

He further explained that his wife’s death came just three months after the passing of her sister, whose three children she had adopted. She is survived by her three biological children and the three adopted ones.

Abdulkadir Balele Wali, the Hospital Secretary, also confirmed the incident, explaining that Hadiza was the Deputy Head of the Maternity Unit and was on duty until late Friday evening.

He described her as a professional, hardworking, and dedicated health worker who committed her life to saving others, adding that her death is a great loss to the entire hospital.

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has said that no one could separate him from the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

0

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has said that no one could separate him from the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Yusuf, who stated this on Tuesday during an event marking the 69th birthday of Kwankwaso, dismissed insinuations of a rift between him and his political mentor, saying those attempting to sow discord between them will not succeed.

The governor reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to Kwankwaso and pledged to continue upholding the ideals of the Kwankwasiyya movement in the state.

“Those within and outside trying to create a quarrel between me and our leader, Engineer Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, will not succeed.

“We will continue to follow the legacy and principles of the Kwankwasiyya movement because Kwankwaso is a God-given leader,” he said.

The governor also prayed for the long life and robust health of the NNPP leader, describing him as a visionary whose leadership continues to guide the state’s progress.

Months ago, there was an alleged movement known as “Abba Tsaya da Kafarka” (Abba Stand on Your Feet), reportedlyled by the former Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Baffa Bichi, and the former Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Salisu Digol.

The group was said to be pushing for greater autonomy for Governor Yusuf’s administration, a development many observers believed could strain relations between the governor and Kwankwaso.

However, the governor’s latest comments appear to put those rumours to rest, reinforcing his commitment to Kwankwaso’s political ideology and the continued partnership that brought the New Nigeria People’s Party to power in Kano.

ASUU has suspended its ongoing two-week warning strike 10 days after it began.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its ongoing two-week warning strike 10 days after it began.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, ASUU President Chris Piwuna directed members of the union to return to work starting tomorrow, Thursday.

Piwuna said the decision was taken at an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union held in Abuja between 21 and 22 October.

He said the suspension of the strike followed fruitful engagements with the government’s representatives last week.

He, however, noted that the union would resume the suspended strike should the government fail to resolve lingering issues in a month.

“NEC resolved that a one-month window should be given to the government to conclude the ongoing renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU and fully address other outstanding issues,” he said.

“NEC hopes that the government would take advantage of this opportunity to timeously resolve all the issues, in order toguarantee industrial harmony and ensure stability of our academic calendar as it has always promised.”

ASUU embarked on a two-week warning strike on Monday, 13 October, over the government’s failure to address its lingering demands.

Bishop Kukah begs US against moves to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern”

0

The Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has cautioned against renewed moves to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over religious persecution, warning that such a step would hurt ongoing reconciliation efforts and embolden extremists.

Kukah made the appeal on Tuesday in Vatican City at the unveiling of the Aid to the Church in Need’s 2025 World Report on Religious Freedom.

In a text of his address obtained by our correspondent, Kukah said that while impunity and persecution persisted in parts of the country, Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu had shown “genuine signs of inclusion” that should be encouraged, not punished.

The cleric argued that foreign powers, especially the United States, should instead back Nigeria’s internal peace efforts rather than impose punitive measures that could destabilise dialogue between Christian and Muslim communities.

“Acts of impunity still persist, but it is my view that redesignating Nigeria a Country of Concern will hurt the initiatives we are working on with the current government.

“Designating my country, Nigeria, a Country of Concern will only make our work in the area of dialogue among religious leaders in our country and elsewhere with the Nigerian state even harder.

“It will only increase tensions, sow doubt, open windows of suspicion and fear and simply allow the criminals and perpetrators of violence to exploit,” Kukah said.

The Catholic Bishop’s remarks come amid renewed debate over whether Nigeria should be reinstated on the U.S. State Department’s list of “Countries of Particular Concern” for religious freedom violations.

The designation, first made in 2020 under then-President Donald Trump, was later removed by President Joe Biden in 2021—a decision that drew both praise and criticism from religious groups.

Kukah urged international partners to “continue to press for change and deliberately work to end impunity,” adding that local religious leaders were already engaging the Tinubu administration to strengthen national cohesion.

“What Nigeria needs now is vigilance by organisations such as ACIN and civil society groups to continue to press for change,” he said, adding, “We should be supported and encouraged in this effort, not punished.”

He noted that the Tinubu government had made deliberate efforts to rebuild trust through its appointments and inclusive gestures.

“The President and the Vice President are Muslims, yet Christians have not felt alienated,” he said, noting that “the Chief of General Staff of the Nigerian Army, the Director of State Security Services, among others, are Christians,” and that “the President just appointed a Christian as the leader of the ruling party.”

According to him, these steps, though imperfect, were “confidence-building measures aimed at inspiring citizens’ sense of belonging.”

In contrast, however, Kukah accused the Muhammadu Buhari administration of fostering religious division and aiding extremist ideologies through its policies and appointments.

“The last eight years of the Buhari administration marked the worst phase in the history of interfaith relations in Nigeria, especially relating to violence against Christians and their exclusion from power.

“That administration gave oxygen to jihadists by virtue of its policies, which overtly favoured Islam and northern Nigeria,” he said.

He alleged that Buhari’s tenure entrenched a sense of exclusion among Christians, citing the former president’s “lopsided” appointments across key sectors of government and security institutions.

“The President himself was a Muslim, ensured that the Senate President, the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, the entire leadership of security was entrusted to the hands of only Muslims, almost all from the north.

“I argued then that in reality, the difference between President Buhari and the jihadists was that he was using a pen while the jihadists were using weapons of violence against Christians,” Kukah said

He added that under Buhari, “to gain power, it was more important to be a northern Muslim than to be a citizen of Nigeria,” describing the era as one that “gave legitimacy to the persecution of Christians and deepened divisions across the country.”

UK warns citizens visiting Nigeria of methanol poisoning from fake alcoholic drinks

0

UK authorities have warned British citizens travelling to Nigeria and other seven countries of risk of methanol poisoning from counterfeit or tainted alcoholic drinks.

UK Foreign Office updated travel guidance listed Nigeria, Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Russia and Uganda among countries with high risk of methanol poisoning following incidents involving its citizens in the listed countries on Tuesday.

Before now, countries on the list include, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Turkey, Costa Rica and Fiji.

“There have been deaths and cases of serious illness caused by alcoholic drinks containing methanol in Nigeria,” the UK Foreign Office said. “Where incidents have been reported, Nigerian authorities have sought to shut down production centres, particularly for unlicensed traditional gin.”

According to UK Foreign Office, Methanol is toxic even in small amounts. It is an industrial alcohol made from distilling wood and can be found in many commercial products, such as antifreeze, fuel and paint thinners. In some parts of the world methanol products are sometimes illegally mixed with ‘real’ alcohol such as spirit-based drinks and cocktails.

Warning Brits travelling to Nigeria and other countries on how to stay safe, the UK Foreign Office urged its citizens to “Avoid homemade or streetside alcohol. Don’t drink from unlabelled bottles. Local spirits or homemade alcohol are at high risk.”

It added, “Stick to licensed places. Only buy your drinks from licensed liquor stores, bars, clubs, restaurants and hotels. Check bottles. Stick to sealed or bottled drinks. Seals should be intact, labels aren’t always accurate and can be counterfeit. Be cautious about spirits, cocktails, shots, unusually cheap or free drinks. Pre-mixed cocktails served in “buckets” or jugs in tourist areas can be high risk.”
