The Katsina Emirate Council has dismissed the District Head of Kankara, also known in the community as ‘Sarkin Pawwan Katsina’, Alhaji Yusuf Lawal.

Recall that the District Head was initially suspended in April after he was found guilty of all the charges leveled against him by residents of the community that he was sponsoring and aiding banditry in the area.

The Spokesman of the Emirate, Alhaji Ibrahim Bindawa in a statement to Channels Television, said a committee was set up by the Emirate and was chaired by the Kauran Katsina, District Head of Rimi, after meeting security officials and other stakeholders especially from the Kankara district found the District Head guilty of aiding bandits and kidnappers terrorising Kankara LGA.

“The immediate suspension followed series of complaints by the residents after which investigation was conducted.

“What happened was that the State Government had hitherto directed the Emirate Council to commence investigation into the allegations leveled against the District Head by the residents.

“Upon completion of the investigation, the Emirate found him guilty and submitted its report to the State Government where the Government further directed the Emirate to dismiss him,” Bindawa explained.

NewsWireNGR also recalled that In December 2020, 344 students were abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara.

Vice President Osinbajo begs Journalists to join hands with the government to build a just and progressive Nigeria

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has urged media practitioners to join hands with the government to build a just, progressive and prosperous Nigeria, stressing that nation-building is not an exclusive preserve of the government and politicians.

The vice president made the call yesterday in Lagos at the event put together by the Nigeria Press Organisation to honour nine departed media icons. The nine departed media legends were those who died between July last year and January this year. They included Malam Ismaila Isa, Malam Wada Maida, Mr. Bisi Lawrence, Chief Gbolabo Ogunsanwo, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, Mr. Eddie Aderionkun, Mr. Ben Egbuna, Prince Tony Momoh and Alhaji Lateef Jakande.

He extolled the virtues and journalistic prowess of the honoured media icons even as he urged the media to reject the temptation to fracture Nigeria but instead elevate those constructive elements that could promote justice, healing and togetherness among the diverse tribes and tongues in the country.

He also charged the media to always hold leaders of the country accountable, saying, “Those of us who govern must do so with the understanding that power is a public trust. It is also the calling of the journalists to invigilate us and hold us accountable. I urge you to do so relentlessly, fairly and unapologetic-ally. When we are both true to our respective callings, our democracy is strengthened.”

The vice president noted that Nigeria is not perfect but the cure for its imperfection is most certainly not destruction or a heedless descent into anarchy as being promoted by some voices. He, therefore, called on the media to have a share in the much needed work of rebuilding, redesigning, reforming and healing the country, even as he stressed that creating a commonality of purpose in a uniquely diverse and culturally diverse society like Nigeria was a challenging task the world over.

He lamented that the country was at a point where so many forces were at play to tear it apart, but urged the media to emulate the virtue of those being celebrated. “We are at a time of our national odyssey in which retailers of discord and matrons of strife are working assiduously against our collective potentials as a people. However, the giants that we celebrate today understood that journalism operates in a social context and cannot be value neutral. This same cognitive commitment is incumbent upon all media practitioners. Media practitioners have a responsibility to exercise discernment in the deployment of their platforms.”

He noted that in spite of all the tensions in the land today, the media have the capacity to douse it and promote peace. He said: “As we struggle to build our nation with the brick of neutrality, plurality and tolerance, those of us who stand as gatekeepers in the Fourth Estate must demonstrate a greater awareness of the sensibilities and sensitivities of our society. Debate over our country’s future will always be intense and passionate but they need not be toxic or polarizing. The media can help to promote a climate of civility in which the most contentious issues can be discussed in full and frank terms without degenerating into chaos.”

He commended the media for being at the forefront of all the epochal struggles in Nigeria right from the fight against colonialism to the enthronement of democracy, but noted that the fourth struggle was under way. “It is the quest to deepen democracy and to realise our collective possibilities as a just, prosperous and progressive nation,” he added.

He commended the organisers of the event, the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Broadcast Organisation of Nigeria (BON) for conceiving a memorial of such taste and magnitude. “The care or loyalty demonstrated by those championing our causes when we are no longer present is more genuine than the obsequiousness of those that engage in eye service when we are still in a position to pay back. I salute the exemplary leadership exhibited by the organisers because by this they have really lived up to expectation as the ultimate custodian of the finest profession of the media tradition,” he said.

Apart from the Vice President, Governors of Lagos and Ekiti States, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Kayode Fayemi, as well as the Deputy Governor of Ogun State and representatives of Katsina and Niger States governments also graced the occasion. Others included publishers, media owners, editors, and journalists among others.

Amaechi says if Oyo State is not ready for the planned Inland Dry Port…….

Minister of transportation, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has urged Oyo State government to participate in putting infrastructures in place for the Inland Dry Port in Ibadan and access roads to service the dry port and the train station in Moniya or relinquish the project to another state on the route.

Amaechi stated this Friday during a meeting with the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde at the government house, Ibadan on the sidelines of his visit to the Inland dry port site.

Amaechi outlined the issues hampering the construction and explained that if the issues are not fixed now for construction to commence, the pressure on Ibadan will be too much to handle when movement of cargoes from Apapa to Ibadan begins.

He said, “We are here to inspect the inland dry port and to make sure that Ibadan is ready before the commissioning of the Lagos-Ibadan rail line. There are issues of border, we had acquired the land, gotten CofO when the former Governor was here, now they are denying us entry into the land. We had 90 acres of land, now we have access to only 40.

In building the Inland Dry Port, “part of the regulation is, when the government acquires land and gives to the federal government, the state government will provide infrastructure. If we convert that infrastructure to equity, then Kaduna will be the first to ask us for equity, because they were the first to provide those infrastructures in Kaduna Dry Port. So many State governments have given us land to build inland dry port and Oyo State will not be an exception. And we don’t expect that Oyo State will ask us to convert those constructions into equity.

“If you don’t want to crash Ibadan town, you need to build a road to link Moniya to the old Ibadan/Oyo road. The reason is, the moment we start trucking cargoes from Lagos to Moniya, even if the dry port was not there, you’ll have pressure in your city if there is no road to get them to exit from there.

“So if you don’t want pressure in your city and on your infrastructure, because what we have today in Lagos, Apapa gridlock and others will transfer to this place; there will be gridlock here. If you don’t want the gridlock, we need to start preparing now, because in June the President will commission Lagos Ibadan rail line. And when he commissions it, it’s our intention to begin to move cargoes on that track, and those cargoes that are going to Kano, Port Harcourt and other states may end up in Ibadan.

“There are benefits, economic activities will pickup in Ibadan just like in Lagos. So it is good we construct that link road between Moniya or the Inland dry port to Ibadan/Oyo road, there’s a train bridge at the entrance and exit of the Inland dry port with a length of  32 metres, width of 18 metres, the connection of 33kva power supply, the reconstruction of Oyo/Ibadan to Moniya/Iseyin link road and a 15% equity participation by the Oyo state government.

The minister said if Oyo State government is not ready, the project will be transferred to another state on the Lagos-Ibadan rail route.

“The Governor of Ogun State has put so much pressure on me, including asking me to build one or give them approval for one in Abeokuta, and I said no, because if I give you approval for one, if it doesn’t kill the one in Ibadan, it will limit the ability of that one to function.

“They (Nigeria Shippers Council and the contractors) have suggested a way out. They want the borderline layout, the infrastructure, and the money for your equity participation. As soon as we get this, we go to cabinet, and as soon as we get cabinet approval, then construction will start. So if the Oyo state government is not interested, let’s know now, so we don’t have to go to cabinet, we’ll start fresh negotiations with another state on the line between Lagos and Ibadan.

“The one of Kaduna, they did not contribute and did not ask for equity, so they don’t have equity, but here if you want 15% equity participation, then you must contribute and it means that you want to share in the profit and the running of the business, so it depends on what you want,” Amaechi said.

Responding, the Governor, Seyi Makinde, expressed the State’s interest to participate in the project and begged the Minister not to move the project to Ogun State.

He said, “most of the challenges mentioned, there’s non that cannot be resolved. We have completely reconstructed the Moniya to Iseyin road. We want the dry port to be able and ready to handle the headache from Apapa. You have my commitment and that of the state government to participate in this. Please don’t negotiate with Ogun. We want you to partner with us on this and we’ll do everything to make sure the issues are resolved quickly.”

NCC denies asking Nigerians to submit IMEI number

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has denied reports that it asked Nigerians to submit their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of their phones from July 2021.

This was contained in a press statement by the commission’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde on Friday. NewsWireNGR obtained the statement from the commission’s website.

NCC on Friday came under the spotlight after several reports claimed it is asking Nigerians to submit their IMEI of their phones starting from July, 2021.

Majority of Nigerians who took to their social media accounts condemned the reported exercise as an invasion of privacy. Some said it was insensitive as a lot of Nigerians are still yet to register their National Identification Number (NIN).

However, the NCC reacting in the published statement explained that reports of the directive was from a misinformation from a section of the Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration recently launched by President Muhammadu Buhari.

It said the NCC already has the IMEI of customers and this had no need for requesting customers IMEI data.

The statement read, “The attention of the Nigerian Communications Commission has been drawn to several media publications to the effect that the Commission will require Nigerians to submit the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of their phones to it from July, 2021.

“At no time did the Commission issue a Statement regarding the registration of IMEI by subscribers and it has no plans to do so.

“The reports in question have emanated from a section of the Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration recently launched by President Muhammadu Buhari and which has been uploaded on the Commission’s website.

“It is pertinent to state that the Commission is in the process of deploying a Device Management System (DMS). The DMS will essentially protect subscribers against phone theft and will identify and enable the elimination of fake devices from the networks.

“The system will capture IMEI automatically without any requirement for subscribers to submit same.”

Social media addiction has been classified along with drugs, alcohol and sex” – Bishop Oyedepo speaks against excessive use

The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, Dr David Oyedepo, has admonished youths against the excessive use of social media.

Oyedepo gave the warning during the 15th Convocation Ceremony, Conferment of Honourary Doctorate Degrees and presentation of prizes in Ota, Ogun, on Friday.

The chancellor noted that the negative impact of social media on youths could not be overemphasised, as it has not only made them lose focus but has also robbed them of their destinies.

“The social media saga has eroded the substance of destiny as it has unconsciously robbed youths of their future and their time. The honour of this generation has been wiped off, chatting all day with no time left to think, plan programme and engage productively in the pursuit of any task.

“Some professionals have classified social media addiction along with drugs, alcohol and sex. Social media that is supposed to be a plus to the youth, suddenly became a minus, as everything of value is delivered through investment of time,” he said.

The chancellor noted that life without a vision was an adventure in frustration, and that life without a bearing was a burden.

According to him, only those who know where they are going ever get anywhere.

“No one ever arrives at a future he cannot see, neither does anyone arrive at a future he is not prepared for. It is time for every youth to wake up from slumber and take his/her destiny in their hands,” he said.

Oyedepo advised youths to get out of the nest by engaging in strategic planning as everyone was absolutely responsible for the outcome of his or her life.

Earlier, Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, said the university was committed to training expert thinkers that would proffer solutions to nation’s problems and restore the lost glory of the black race.

Adebayo said the institution was keeping its students busy with activities that prepared them for leadership and productive dialogue as well as equipping them with skills to change their world.

The Vice Chancellor urged the graduands to be agents of change, light-bearers, solution providers and pathfinders in confronting the numerous challenges bedeviling Nigeria and the world at large.

Adebayo congratulated the graduands and their parents as well as guardians on their noble achievement.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total of 1,664 students graduated for the 2019/2020 academic session.

They comprised 201 students who made first class honours; 793, second class upper honours; 595, second class lower; 75, third class and 254 post graduate students.

NAN also reports that Miss Paula-Peace Onyinyechi, a graduate of Biochemistry Department, College of Sciences, emerged the best graduating student, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.98.
