“Our business is to make this union work” – Osinbajo says those waiting for Nigeria to break will be disappointed

0

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has said that, Nigeria will remain united as a strong nation to the frustration of those waiting to see the country broken into pieces.

He made the remark on Monday in Abuja at the maiden edition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Progressives Youth Conference.

“In the area of disruption and disruptive innovation, the principle that we are stronger together than in little part is a sound principle and it is my respectful view that those who advocate the breaking up of the country are terribly wrong,” Professor Osinbajo told a crowd of youths and party chieftains at the International Conference Centre in the nation’s capital.

He added, “Our size is crucial for geopolitical and economic relevance. Our people will be better served by a large populous and diverse country. As with all big and diverse countries, our business is to make this union work; it is to give everybody a sense of belonging.

“All of those waiting on the sidelines, hoping that this big country called Nigeria will break up into bits so that they can pick up the pieces, will be very sorely disappointed and I am very sure that those of you who are seated here today will prevent that from happening.”

The Vice President acknowledged the need for all Nigerians to be guaranteed a fair chance at improving their human condition and urged the youth to be a part of conversations that will ensure this.

He asked the young generation not just to say it was time for them and for the older people to give way, stressing that such was unlikely to happen.

Professor Osinbajo, however, stated that it was the strength of the ideas and the depth of the youths’ organisation and not age that would retire those ahead of them.

“I am also frankly not very impressed with the notion that the role and power of young people are somehow postponed until elders have gone, or that there’s some kind of generational queue that to which we all must subscribe.

“Even if that was true at some point, today, that notion stands on very weak legs indeed,” he said.

The event had in attendance APC youth leaders and older party leaders from various parts of the country, as well as top government officials.

Conversations at the conference centred on more youth inclusiveness in party politics and the positioning of young people for the 2023 general elections.

Effective leadership recruitment, key to APC’s survival – Gbajabiamila

0

For the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the progressive movement to survive in Nigeria, there must be a deliberate and effective system of leadership recruitment to identify and prepare people, especially the youth, to occupy the important offices of party and government, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has said.

Gbajabiamila said this was the practice all over the world, especially in countries where democracy had developed over the years.
Speaking at the 2021 Progressives Youth Conference of the APC in Abuja on Monday, Gbajabiamila said the party needed to identify competent people both at home and in the Diaspora and bring them on board to be “effective champions of progressivism in the country and in government.”
The speaker also said translating good manifestos into policies by political parties remained the foundation for achievements.
“Political party manifestos are a statement of vision and vision is the foundation of all achievements. For a nation such as ours to succeed, we must first define a common vision that will inspire us, bring us together, and provide the focus that allows us to persevere through the inevitable difficult times”, Gbajabiamila.

He noted further, “Political parties exist to mobilise public support to form a government and to superintend over the affairs of the state. To be successful in this regard, political parties must reflect in their membership, the broad spectrum of the society it seeks to govern.

“As is the case with all other contractual documents, the commitments contained in the party manifesto are the basis upon which the party’s record in government will be measured and its leaders will be assessed both in real-time and in the judgment of history. As it has been throughout history, so also will it be for us in the All Progressives Congress (APC) as we too will answer for what we have done with our time in government.

“I believe that much has been accomplished despite the fact of the many obstacles that have stood in our way. Yet, there is still much left to do in the two years we have left to complete our assignment.

“For the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the progressive movement to survive in Nigeria, we must commit ourselves to a deliberate and effective system of leadership recruitment to identify and prepare people – young people especially, to occupy the important offices of party and government.
“We need to identify people from the professional ranks and the private sector, from here at home and in the diaspora. We need to bring them into the fold and prepare them to become effective champions of progressivism in the country and in government.

“As we recruit and train, we must also make sure that we elevate those who have been with us the longest, who fully embrace the principles of progressivism, who understand the vision of the progressive manifesto and who by their actions and antecedents have proven that they have the capacity to translate our manifesto into policies and practices for the good of our country and all our people.

Gbajabiamila also said the most important factor that determined whether a political party in government would succeed in implementing its manifesto would be the process by which the party arrived at the manifesto in the first instance.
“If the manifesto of the party is merely a compendium of promises put together for electoral purposes without any consideration of the personnel and resources required to achieve them, then it is unlikely to succeed.
“However, when as it should be, the manifesto is a statement of carefully thought-out principles, it becomes a guideline for governance, a reference for policy-making and a motivational text to which the members of the government will return, time and again, to draw inspiration and reinforce clarity of purpose.”

The Speaker noted that the second most important consideration for successfully implementing political party manifestos was the character and ability of the men and women to be chosen from amongst the ranks of the party’s membership to take up office in government and drive the implementation of the manifestos.
“Character speaks to questions of integrity and loyalty. Loyalty to country, and the foundational principles of the party. Whereas ability speaks to competence and the capacity of the individual to practice statecraft in a way that translates principles into action, and action into achievement.

“…in politics and governance, personnel is policy. Personnel is also identity. The men and women we choose to fly the party’s flag in elections, the people we appoint as heads of departments, and as political and policy aides; the people we select to manage the affairs of our party from the wards through to the national headquarters all together make up the face of the party”, he added.

The Speaker congratulated the APC youth wing for organizing the conference, which he said was a good avenue for nation-building.

APC in Cross River state has ordered 3 million bunches of brooms

0

The Cross River State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has placed an order for three million bunches of brooms from local broom makers for the new entrants into the party.

The party’s Publicity Secretary, Bassey Ita, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Calabar on Monday.

Mr Ita stated that it was observed that the commodity, which is APC’s symbol, had suddenly become scarce in the state, following the influx of new members, in the wake of Governor Ben Ayade’s arrival in the party.
”To address the challenge, the party ordered for three million bunches of brooms from local suppliers to meet the growing demand.

“It is no longer news that the broom revolution has since hit our dear state, following the defection of our amiable governor to our party.

“But what is now news is that broom scarcity has hit Cross River as millions of our people continue to identify with the party.

“Last weekend, local government chairmen, councillors, federal and state lawmakers, alongside 100,000 of their supporters in Bekwarra, Ikom and Etung council areas joined the party,” the statement added.

The party paid tribute to “the tenacity of purpose and single-mindedness of the people of the state for aligning with the governor in his drive to socket Cross River to the centre”.

#TwitterBan: Reps to begin probe on Tuesday

0

The House of Representatives will begin investigations on the controversial Twitter ban on Tuesday.

The joint committees on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values alongside the National Security, Justice and Commerce, will be organising the investigative hearing.

The House had on June 8 resolved to investigate the ban of the microblogging site by the government.

On June 4, the Nigerian government had through a statement by the Minister of information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension of Twitter from operating.

The ban came a few days after the platform deleted a tweet from the account of President Muhammadu Buhari for violating Twitter rules.

The committees were mandated to summon Mr Mohammed to appear before it.

The House had given the committees 10 days to report back to it. However, the lawmakers embarked on a two-week holiday in the same week and will not resume until June 29.

Meanwhile, last week at the public hearing on a bill to amend the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Act, the minister for information, Lai Mohammed, called for internet broadcasting to be included in the NBC Act.

“I will want to add, that specifically, internet broadcasting and all online media should be included in this because we have a responsibility to monitor content — including Twitter.” he said.

Samson Siasia’s life-ban reduced to five years by Court of Arbitration for Sports

0

Former coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles, Samson Siasia has had his life-ban punishment from football reduced to five years by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

Th lifeline was disclosed by the CAS via an official statement on Monday.

The CAS ruled that Siasia was a passive, first-time offender, hence his punishment merited a reduction.

The FIFA fine of 50,000 Swiss francs ($54,000) was overturned “as inappropriate and excessive” because Siasia had not profited and would not be able to earn money from the sport. His ban expires in August 2024.

“Mr Siasia is banned for 5 (five) years from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at national and international level (administrative, sports or any other) as of 16 August 2019,” CAS said in its Monday statement.

“The imposed fine of CHF 50,000 (fifty thousand Swiss Francs) on Mr Siasia is set aside.

“The Panel determined the imposition of a life ban to be disproportionate for a first offence which was committed passively and which had not had an adverse or immediate effect on football stakeholders, and that a five-year ban would still achieve the envisaged aim of punishing the infringement committed by Mr Siasia.”

The ban has been backdated to start on 16 August 2019 as the court explained the background to the case.

SIasia, 53, was initially sanctioned in 2019 by Fifa for agreeing to match “receive bribes in relation to the manipulation of matches.”

But Siasia appealed against the ban with football’s governing body and Cas as he denied the charges against him.

Siasia is a Nigerian former professional football striker and the former head coach of the Nigeria national team from 2010 to October 2011. He was reappointed in 2016.

He played 51 international matches for Nigeria, in which he scored thirteen goals, and was part of the team that participated in the 1994 FIFA World Cup and won the 1994 African Nations Cup. He was also a member of the Nigerian team that won bronze at 1992 African Nations Cup in Senegal. He participated in the national team over a period of 11 years and was recognized in Nigeria as the third leading scorer for the national team.

As a coach he led his country’s under-20 and under-23 sides to continental success in 2005 and 2015, respectively. He also guided the under-20’s to a runners-up finish at the 2005 World Youth Championships in the Netherlands.

UAE restores suspension on Nigeria flights barely 48 hours after it lifted ban

0

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday again announced suspension of all flights to and from Nigeria, barely 48 hours after announcing that flights will resume on Wednesday, June 23.

According to a statement on the Emirates airline’s website, the UAE government said the suspension took effect on Monday till further notice.

“In line with government directives, passenger flights to and from Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) are suspended with effect from 21 June 2021 until further notice,” the statement read.

The ban on Nigerian flights also includes passengers who have been to Nigeria in the previous two weeks.

“Customers travelling to and from Lagos and Abuja will not be accepted for travel. Customers who have been to or connected through Nigeria in the last 14 days are not permitted to board from any other point to the UAE,” the directive continued.

On Saturday Emirates airline announced resumption of flights, which were suspended in March over diplomatic row on COVID-19 protocols.

The Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management had lifted the ban on Nigeria and also removed the rapid antigen test and said passengers from Nigeria would only be required to possess negative PCR test.

“We look forward to facilitating travel from these countries and supporting various travelers’ categories.

“We will resume carrying passengers from South Africa, Nigeria and India in accordance with these protocols from 23rd June,” Emirates had announced.

However, Emirates gave no reason for the new suspension imposed but only apologised to customers and advised on next steps to be taken.

“We regret the inconvenience caused, and affected customers should contact their booking agent or Emirates call centre for rebooking. Emirates remains committed to Nigeria, and we look forward to resuming passenger services when conditions allow.”

Nigeria Customs Service says it will Impound unverified private jets by July 6

0

The Nigeria Customs Service says Private Jet owners risk having their airplanes impounded if they have not verified their documents before July 6, 2021 when the one month grace period previously granted expires.

The Public Relations Officer of NCS, Joseph Attah, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at a media briefing to update the public on the ongoing audit of privately-owned aircraft operating in Nigeria.

“Within two weeks into the 30 days verification period, only six owners of private aircraft have responded to the invitation, necessitating this update and reminder to those who have not responded, to do so in order to avoid possible detention of their aircraft.

“We learnt some are coming today or tomorrow for verification. We also know that some brought their private jets under a temporary import certificate, which has expired and not renewed. “At the end of the verification, some of the things we want to expose will come to light. We will make our findings known on July 6 after the expiration of the 30-day grace window. Those in default risk detention of their aircraft as nobody is above the law,” Attah said.

Attah added that the management of the NCS believes that owners of private aircraft are highly placed individuals who would be willing to comply with extant laws governing the importation of the aircraft they own; including payments of all appropriate duties and taxes.

“As an agency of government responsible for enforcement of laws governing imports and exports in Nigeria, NCS will not hesitate to invoke appropriate sanctions on any defaulting private aircraft owner immediately after the expiration of the verification period on Tuesday 6th July 2021.

“For the avoidance of doubt, private aircrafts owners or their representatives are to report to Room 305, Tariff and Trade Departments, Nigeria Customs Service headquarters, Abuja, from 10 am to 5 pm between Monday, June 7 and Tuesday, July 6, 2021”, Attah explained.

He added that the required documents for verification are: Aircraft Certificate of Registration NCAA’S Flight Operations Compliance Certificate; NCAA’S Maintenance Compliance Certificate; NCAA’S Permit for non- Commercial Flights; and Temporary Import Permit where applicable.

The Customs spokesman stressed that the ongoing verification was not intended to inconvenience any owner of a private aircraft, as such individuals or representatives can come with the documents for verification.

‘Bandits are not really indoctrinated, they are just looking for money’ – Sheikh Gumi

0

Islamic cleric, Sheik Abubakar Gumi says the armed bandits terrorozing Nigeria’s Northern and Middle belt regions are not indoctrinated extremists. According to him, ‘they are just looking for money’.

Commenting on the the 136 students of Salihu Tanko Islamiya School, Tegina, who were abducted by armed bandits last month in Niger State, the cleric said to THE PUNCH; “we are trying to talk sense to them that these are just innocent schoolchildren. We don’t even have any idea of the condition of the children. We are just saying these are young children trying to study and they did nothing, so why are you trying to take dirty money from their families?

“This (kidnap of Islamic pupils) actually proves to the nation that the bandits are not really indoctrinated, they are just looking for money and I think that this is a good prognosis. They are not targeting a religion; they are not ideologues, which are difficult to deal with. We should not forget that they are not educated, formally or informally. They are just going about with cattle, and suddenly they found a lucrative way of finding money.”

Recall that the bandits had demanded N200m from the victims’ parents, which was later reduced to N150m.

“With good engagement, education and enticements like jobs and other things, they will leave this work. But we need a partner and we need the government to understand. Individuals like me alone cannot do it.

“All those we met (have stopped kidnapping), except for one of them who is kidnapping again, and he told us his reason, that he was neglected and he thought we had the mandate to negotiate. But when he realised that we did not have the mandate from anybody, he said he was going back to his business.

“So, the earlier we go into engaging them, the better. The ones who have agreed to lay down arms, you can engineer them to take care of the rest.”

The cleric further stated that the government could not protect schools without first finding means to end banditry in the country.

JAMB says NIN requirement caused a N675million drop in revenue

0

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said its drop in 2021 reveue from its Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examinations (UTME) and Direct Entry forms is due to the drop in form sales is caused the introduction of national identification number (NIN) as a requirement for registration.

The financial figures of the examination’s board as presented in its weekly bulletin revealed that JAMB generated N5,887,628,900 from the sale of forms for the 2021 UTME/DE.

This revenue generated is lower than the N6,563,086,710 the board generated from the same forms in 2020.

Explaining the reason for the N675 million shortage, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s press director according to a Monday report by PUNCH, said the NIN requirement made it impossible for some prospective candidates to register, leading to the reduction in the number of registered candidates and the proceeds generated from sales of forms.

“Last year, we had over two million candidates who registered for the examinations, both the UTME and DE,” Benjamin said.

“But this year, we are talking about between 1.3 million and 1.4 million. We know factors such as the introduction of the NIN to the registration process were responsible.

“From the information on ground, the NIN did not make lots of candidates register and you know before now we have been having cases of multiple registrations and that was why we brought in the NIN.”

JAMB’s 2021 registration had started on April 10 and ended on May 29, 2021. The board had stated that it would only give an extension to a few candidates who encountered certain hurdles in their registration process.

At least 1,338,687 candidates registered for the UTME in 2021 while 75,328 registered for the DE exam.

The figures realised are in sharp contrast with the estimated total of over two million registered candidates recorded in 2020.

Alleged Fraud: EFCC to probe Ogun State Assembly financial records

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has begun the probe of Ogun State House of Assembly over alleged financial misappropriation.

The Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, revealed on Sunday while featuring on a radio programme, Sunday Morning Live, that the anti-graft agency had written to the Assembly, asking for information on all budget appropriations and allocations of the House from May 30, 2015 to date.

The Lawmaker said the EFCC letter was received during the recent parliamentary workers strike.

“They (EFCC) are asking for information from 2015; I wasn’t at the helms of affairs since 2015 to 2019. We are given a specific amount of moneyb for our salaries and allowances.

“We don’t take anything more than that. And it is the same amount which the House had been collecting since 2015 that we are still collecting now; the same with allowances. We don’t have the money to squander in the House.” he said.
