Cheta Nwanze: There was an advert that used to run on Radio Biafra, Enugu

0

A few months ago, I asked about Okonkwo, and unfortunately, most Igbo people think he was a hero. Newsflash, he was not. Okonkwo was that person who didn’t have the ability to think. Even Prof Achebe once said that he’d prefer if we were like Obierika.

So, the lesson: first, what is diplomacy?

Diplomacy is tact. It is a skill in managing negotiations, handling people, etc, so that there is little or no ill will. There’s an Igbo proverb for that: agbakoo aka nyuo mamiri, o gbaa ?f?f?. It is not only the Igbo people that can pee together, as a matter of fact, but we also need the help of others so that the urine will foam very well. Let us go back to our darkest moment as a people?—?1967 to 1970.

Why did he lose the war? Hubris.

There was an advert that used to run on Radio Biafra, Enugu just before war broke out, and its tag line was, “Whether they come from the land, sea or air, we will beat them.”

History tells different, and two main things are to be considered here: First, the state creation of 1967 was a strategic masterstroke. It immediately removed the incentive for the “minority” ethnic groups in the Eastern region to support ndi Igbo because their yearnings of decades were addressed with that move. We were blind and deaf to that. The result was that when indeed war broke out, the federal side always had guides from non-Igbo groups, those who have a historical axe to grind with us. Everywhere there was a massacre of Igbos, it was Southern minorities who pointed out the first people that were shot.

Why?

Secondly, let us stop propagating Ikedi Ohakim’s myth that the South-East is not landlocked. It is. Deal with it. Landlocked doesn’t mean you don’t have rivers. It means you don’t have direct access to the ocean. No one is going to spend billions of dollars to dredge 80km to Azumini.

Sadly, and this is the third thing, our attitudes towards our neighbours with sea access, haughty in the main, did not help. We never stopped to ask what was paining these people. We have not stopped to ask up until this day.

When you are the bigger group in an arrangement, it behoves you to be that much more considerate towards your smaller counterpart. It helps for good relations. It helps even better when that smaller partner has significant leverage over you. In this case, the significant leverage that our smaller neighbours have over us anyi bu ndi Igbo, is geography. First, the fact is that Kogi state is larger than the South-East. If we put the SE as a single state, it will be the 14th largest state in Nigeria by landmass.

The following states are each larger than the SE: Niger, Borno, Taraba, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, Zamfara, Adamawa, Kwara, Kebbi, Benue, Plateau and Kogi. If we add Anioma to ani Igbo, we move up to just above Benue. This densely populated region is a challenge, like it or not.

How is it a challenge?

It is a challenge because, in addition to the huge population density, the quality of the land has seen, for whatever reason, a significant deterioration since Olaudah Equiano’s time. Why? I don’t know yet, but it is what it is.

The reason that ndi Igbo are such great traders is not that we are genetically superior, but because our situation demands that we move about. Our geography makes us what Hubert Blalock called a Middleman minority. We must live among others, our geography demands it.

But this is where our republican nature works against us. Because culturally, we do not have “leaders”, we tend to be very abrasive. We do not listen to our own admonition that “Eneke si na kemgbe dinta ji muta mgbagbu na ofu mgba, ? muta ife ma adaghi n’ala.”

To be truly successful as a people, we must listen to that and adapt to our realities. We must understand that “Ikpe aghahi ima ?ch?cha ebe ?k?k? n??.” So we must learn to be less abrasive, and more conciliatory, especially to our near abroad. The same rain that is beating us is beating Ndi mili na Ndi ugbo. So we must embrace them, not antagonise them by calling them “Fulani slaves” all the time, then turning around and expecting them to work with us.

Oh, and for Ndi mili, we should stop looking down on the pain they suffered during the war. Some of our boys did really nasty stuff between 1967 and 1970. The same way we cry about what Ndi ugwu did to us, we should be charitable towards Ndi mili.

Dot nation: Joe Igbokwe calls Abaribe an ‘ethnic bigot’ for wearing branded T-shirt

0

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Drainage and Water Resources, Joe Igbokwe on Tuesday berated the Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe for wearing a shirt customised with “The Dot Nation”.

Mr Igbokwe, in a post on Facebook called Mr Abaribe “an elder for nothing and an ethnic bigot” and said he would someday write a book about the senator.

“A Senator and an ethnic bigot, an elder for nothing. The blood of those policemen and the uninformed youths killed in the South-East will be accounted for in the fullness of time, We cannot be mad all the time,” the former spokesperson of APC in Lagos said.

The phrase ‘Dot nation’ has been a buzzword in the southeast after President Muhammadu Buhari in a recent interview with Arise TV described secessionists from the region as “a dot in a circle”.

It is however unclear if the president was referring to the proscribed IPOB group or the entirety of people from the southeast.

Chris Brown under investigation for allegedly assaulting another woman

American RnB star Chris Brown is facing new legal issues in California.

According to a report from TMZ on Monday night (June 21), Breezy is under investigation after a woman accused the R&B singer of smacking off her weave. Apparently, Brown hit the woman in the back of the head with so much force, her hair extensions fell off. The incident took place in Tarzana, Calif. this past weekend.

The unnamed woman reportedly filed a police report with Chris Brown identified as the suspect.

A rep for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to journalists on Tuesday June 22 that on “June 18 at around 7:30 a.m. patrol officers responded to a radio call on the 19600 block of Citrus Ridge Drive. The victim advised that she and the suspect argued and the suspect struck her. A crime report of battery was taken. Suspect was on location when the police officers arrived. The investigators will submit the crime report to the city attorney’s office for filing consideration.”

This incident comes two months after Breezy had a birthday party with over 400 people at his home. The event had to be shut down after authorities received a call of a disturbance and incorrectly parked cars near his property

The singer is yet to make any public statements about the allegations.

In 2016, he first faced a battery charge for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. Since then, assault and battery charges have peppered the last several years of Chris Brown’s public image, particularly accusations from women who have filed police reports against the singer and dancer. In 2019, he was arrested on suspicion for assault with a deadly weapon.

‘No insecurity is worse than food insecurity, people cannot be allowed to die of hunger’ – Borno Governor

0

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, says famine is imminent in the state unless its farmers can return to their farms.

Zulum said this while speaking to BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday.

According to the Governor, the situation in Borno has become pathetic as thousands of refugees who have returned to their communities have no food and cannot cultivate their farmland.

“No insecurity is worse than food insecurity. Without food to eat terrible things can happen. We have reached a situation that if people are not allowed to farm they can kill themselves and eat,” Mr Zulum, a professor, said.

“Borno is now experiencing food insecurity. We cannot wait for things to get perfect for people to go to farm, we need to be resilient to Boko Haram attacks. We cannot accept a situation where five or 10 gunmen can dislodge a town with over ten thousand dwellers,” the governor said.

”People cannot be allowed to die of hunger and our children not going to school, that cannot happen,” Zulum added

The governor said the non-governmental organisations giving support have done their best but are no longer providing food assistance because they are overwhelmed.

Zulum said people have to return to their communities to farm and transact businesses.

Nigeria’s North-east region has been enmeshed in a bloody insurgency for over a decade which has resulted in thousands of deaths and mass displacement of residents in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states.

#TwitterBAN: Federal Government insists suspension continues until Twitter obtains licence to operate

0

The Nigerian Government has insisted that the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria would continue until the social media platform registers in the country and obtains a licence to operate in the country.

The Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed gave this warning when he appeared before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Information, Justice, and Communication on Tuesday at the National Assembly in Abuja while answering questions on the ban on Twitter, a microblogging site.

He said this as a justification to the ongoing suspension of Twitter operations in the country; citing that Twitter made its platform available as a choice for people who want to destabilise and cause disunity in Nigeria.

“We want Twitter to be registered first in the country before they can operate,” he said.

On whether any channel of dialogue had been opened with Twitter, the minister said “we tried to but they rebuffed us. They are not known to us. They are not registered, but we hope we will be able to engage them”, as he lamented that the organisation had no investment in Nigeria, but in Ghana, while the target market was Nigeria.

The minister also denied the widely held opinion that the move was intended to stifle free speech and press freedom.

“There was no intention of the federal government to stifle free speech in the country. The only reason we suspended Twitter is that it was promoting disunity. Its activities are inimical to the unity of the country,” Mohammed insisted.

According to the minister, the government “discovered 476 online platforms devoted to bring down this country (Nigeria). They are always faster than us (government), so the only way out is to regulate them”, adding that the move was not peculiar to Nigeria, naming Australia and Singapore among countries where regulation of the social media space were in place.

Responding to a question on whether the move was not directed at certain groups, coming at this time, the minister said the current government’s bid to rid Nigeria of fake news began in 2017, explaining that there have been instances where the government approached Twitter to take down certain posts which were not in the interest of Nigeria to no avail.

The minister also cautioned Nigerians using the Virtual Personal Network (VPN) to access Twitter to desist because of its possible security implications, including access to personal bank account information. “For those using VPN, if you think you’re hurting Lai Mohammed, you’re hurting yourselves”, he said.

Another NLC/Kaduna Government face-off imminent as NLC alleges breach of agreement

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress on Tuesday said it would resume its suspended industrial action in Kaduna State over the mass sacking of workers and other alleged anti- labour practices by the Governor Nasir El-Rufai administration.

.The NLC took the decision after the emergency National Executive Council meeting presided over by its President, Ayuba Wabba, on Tuesday.

Wabba accused El-Rufai of failing to respect the Memorandum of Understanding between the NLC and the state government by the Federal Government.

Speaking to Journalists after the meeting, The NLC president said the congress, after exhausting all avenues, including writing letters to President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had decided to resume the strike.

He said, “Owing to the above grievous infractions and continued provocation by the Kaduna State Government against workers and trade unions in the state and despite the fact that we have also complained formally to the Federal Government through the President and Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on the non-adherence to the MoU, NEC has resolved that the earlier decision to withdraw all services and protest this neo-liberal and extreme right-wing policy should take effect without further delay.”

Last month, the NLC led workers in the state in a five day protest that crippled various sectors across the state. In reaction, the Kaduna State Government announced the sack of hundreds of university teachers and nurses for joining the strike.

An agreement between the two parties was eventually reached and brokered by the federal government in Abuja.

Part of the agreement was that the Kaduna government will follow due process and the“principle of redundancy,” as stipulated in Section 20 of the Labour Act, in its Public Service Revitalization and Renewal Programme, which is expected to lead to the retrenchment and sack of workers.

The parties also agreed that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) twill no longer continue with its industrial action while no worker shall be victimized by the state government on account of his or her participation in the industrial action.

‘People are taking advantage of the #TwitterBan to blackmail Government’ – Festus Keyamo

0

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, says some Nigerians have been taking advantage of the #TwitterBan in the country to blackmail the Federal Government.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television program; Politics Today on Tuesday, the minister said the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government has never used any social media platform to promote content that was capable of “setting the country ablaze”.

He said this in response to questions that the party used the same social media to rise to power back in 2015, stressing that the goal of the government with the #TwitterBan is not to stifle free speech.

“As a political party APC, can you tell us examples when we tried to use social media platforms to set the country ablaze?,” Keyamo asked, adding “we should not be blackmailed into a corner and behave as if we are acting against our own principles.

“We are not talking about stifling free speech. People have been using this as a blackmail weapon that we rode to power using social media. That is blackmail because we need to set specific examples where we use social media to undermine the territorial integrity and peace and unity of Nigeria,”

“Nobody is saying that people should not use social media platforms, nobody is saying that we should not call government officials to question. Nobody is saying that you should not even abuse us but is it right for you to go to social media and promote false stories that are capable of turning one part of the country against another?” he added.

On Tuesday, The Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) Court of Justice sitting in Abuja delivered a judgement restraining the Federal Government from arresting any Nigerian on account of their use of Twitter.

The court held that the use of the social media platform is a fundamental right of every Nigerian.

The Nigerian government had threatened to arrest and prosecute anyone using Twitter, while the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) asked all broadcast stations to suspend the use of the social media platform after President Buhari’s tweet was deleted by the platform.

The ruling followed the suit filed against the government by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and 176 concerned Nigerians over the development.

Reacting to the ruling, feyamo says; “I have not seen anywhere where they said the ECOWAS court is the moral thermometer or barometer to decide whether Nigeria’s image is bad or not”.

A bill to ‘regulate’ human organs harvesting in Lagos, passes second reading

A bill to ‘regulate’ human organs harvesting and transplantation has scaled its second reading in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The bill scaled the second reading after it was read for the second time by the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, during plenary on Tuesday.

Mr Onafeko said the title of the bill was ‘Lagos State Organ Harvest and Transplantation Bill 2021’ .

He said that it is a bill for a law to regulate organ harvest and transplantation in Lagos State for other connected purposes.

The Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hakeem Sokunle, (Oshodi-Isolo 1) explained that the bill captured the legal framework for the regulation of organ transplantation from donors either living or dead to patients in need.

Mr Sokunle said the bill had seven parts with 37 sub-sections and tried to curb illegal trade in human parts.

“Under its offence and penalties’ clause, the bill states that a person who removes the organ of another person for a reason other than for therapeutic purposes commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 10 years without an option of fine.

“The bill also stipulates that a person or any hospital and who, for the purposes of transplant, conducts, associates with, or helps in any manner in the removal of any organ without the permission of the authority commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding N5 million or a term of 10 years,” he said.

Contributing, Gbolahon Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2), said the bill would help in putting a stop to organ trafficking, while calling the attention of his colleagues to some grey areas in the bill.

After 6 years in power, Buhari moves to reduce poverty in Nigeria – appoints Osinbajo

0

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja commenced the process to reduce poverty in Nigeria.

Buhari inaugurated the National Steering Committee (NSC) of the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS) chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The Nigerian leader reiterated his commitment to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in ten years.

In attendance were Osinbajo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, some governors and top government officials.

Buhari noted that the NPRGS already proposed the establishment of a private equity fund, the Nigeria Investment and Growth Fund (NIG-Fund).

The fund will lead resource mobilization drive and also manage the resources in a sustainable manner.

“I am happy to note that the process of designing this inclusive poverty reduction strategy recognized and addressed past mistakes as well as laying the foundation for a sustainable poverty reduction through the wide range consultations held at all levels of government, development partners, the private sector as well as the civil society,’’ he said.

The President added that the NPRGS would address the underlying causes of poverty.

The major challenge, according him, is to translate his government’s good intention into positive impact of the average Nigerian.

Buhari said if India can lift 271million people out of poverty between 2006 and 2016, Nigeria can lift 100million out of poverty in 10 years.

Members of the committee are Mustapha, Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari; Kayode Fayemi, Governor of Ekiti (South West); Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta (South South); Aminu Tambuwal, Governor of Sokoto (North West).

Others are Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno (North East); Abdullahi Sule, Governor of Nasarawa (North Central), and Dave Umahi, Governor of Ebonyi (South East) and Ministers.

#TwitterBan: ECOWAS Court stops FG from prosecuting twitter users

The Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) Court of Justice sitting in Abuja has restrained the Federal Government from arresting any Nigerian on account of their use of Twitter.

In a ruling delivered today, the court held that the use of the social media platform is a fundamental right of every Nigerian.

“VICTORY: The ECOWAS Court of Justice, Abuja in a landmark ruling today has stopped the Buhari administration and its agents from intimidating, sanctioning, arresting or prosecuting anyone for using Twitter in Nigeria, pending the final determination of the suit,” SERAP wrote in a tweet.

On Friday, SERAP filed a lawsuit asking the Federal High Court in Abuja “to stop the Federal Government and the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed from using their patently unlawful directive to all television and radio stations not to use Twitter and delete their accounts.

SERAP, described the directive as a pretext to harass, intimidate, suspend or impose criminal punishment on journalists and broadcast stations simply for using social media platforms.
