FULL TEXT: Afenifere leader, Adebanjo, responds to allegations by Akande in ‘My Participation’

0

PRESS STATEMENT BY CHIEF AYO ADEBANJO, LEADER OF AFENIFERE IN RESPONSE TO THE ALLEGATION MADE BY CHIEF BISI AKANDE IN HIS BOOK “MY PARTICIPATION” TO THE EFFECT THAT CHIEF BOLA TINUBU BUILT MY HOUSE IN LEKKI FOR ME, ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2021.

AT MY HOUSE PLOT 25, AYO ADEBANJO CLOSE OFF ADEBAYO DOHERTY STREET, LEKKI PHASE 1, LAGOS STATE.

Gentlemen of the press,

About a week ago, last Thursday, 7 December to be exact at the presentation of the book “MY PARTICIPATION” by Chief Bisi Akande it was said that Chief Bisi Akande stated in the book that I brought pressure on Bola Tinubu to build the house for me.

But since Bola Tinubu himself was present at the presentation I expect him within a few days to refute such a malicious falsehood about me emanating from his Man Friday.

I hold this view because Bola Tinubu just some 3 years ago on the occasion of the presentation of my auto-biography “SAYING IT AS IT IS ” that for my incorruptibility and strength of character he Bola Tinubu would not have been Governor of Lagos State in 1999.

What then could he be demanding from me after his two term governorship to make me pressurize him to build a house for me, when I did not get a naira from him before he became the governor?

There has been a lot of pressure on me not to react to Chief Bisi Akande’s tantrums, he is a neophyte, a beneficiary of a struggle he never took part in.

I have been urged to keep to the adage not to “Answer a fool less you reduce yourself to his level, but there is also an adage that says, *“Answer a fool less he thinks he is wise”.

A lot has been said in the press and the social media to demolish tantrums.

But I owe a duty to myself and to put the record straight for posterity about the big lie that Bola Tinubu built my house in Lekki for me.

I, therefore, deny categorically that my house at Lekki was built with my resources through the sale of 3 developed properties, loan from GTBank and the sale of undeveloped landed property given me by my late leader Chief Obafemi Awolowo of blessed memory

The details are as follows:

A 4 bedroom duplex with 2 bedroom flat enclosed with 2 undeveloped plots at plot 4, block 14, Nuru Oniwo Street, Aguda Surulere, Lagos State, this is where I was living before moving to Lekki.

The house was commissioned in 1972 by Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

A wing of the duplex was once occupied by a staff of the security outfit then known as “special branch” headed then by the late Alhaji M.D. Yussuf who later became Inspector General of Police when General Olusegun Obasanjo was the Head of State.

It was later occupied by one of the wives Chief Pius Akinyelure, who often visit his wife there in company of Senator Bola Tinubu.

The gate of this property was forced open by Abacha security forces when NADECO was holding a sendoff party for American ambassador Walter Carrington in my house, I took the Federal Government to court for damages and I was awarded #1million naira which has not been paid till today by the Federal Government, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba SAN, was my counsel.

The house was sold to St Baths Aglican Church, Aguda, Surulere.
Two storey building at Odedola Street, Surulere, Lagos State.

I bought it through an Estate Agent by name Mr. Shiwoniku who has relocated to UK, he has a brother who is a legal practitioner in Abuja.

The house was sold to a Ghanaian by name Mr Akappo.

He is still alive and he lives in one of the flat in the building.
Four storey building with a warehouse on the ground floor and six flats on top. It was commissioned by Chief Awolowo in 1977.

I inherited the plot of 45’X100’ from my mother Salamotu Anomo-Adebanjo, who built a bungalow on it.

She bought the land when I was in primary school in 1940 from one Pa. Idowu Onitiri for £20, which she paid by installment of £10, £7, £3. His son Akanbi Onitiri, executed the conveyance for me without extra payment after showing him the purchase receipts from his father, when I was developing it in 1976. Akanbi Onitiri is the father of Sumbo Onitiri, a well known estate surveyor in Lagos.
The building was sold to a woman through an estate agent.

I then took a loan from GTBank to complete the house in Lekki where I am living now.

When the interest on the loan became unbearable, I was compelled to sell the undeveloped land given to me by Chief Awolowo in Dide-Olu Estate in Maroko Victoria Island. One Mr. Ade Otusanya a friend of my son Femi Ayo-Adebanjo bought the land.

The contractor who built my Lekki house is Engr. Hakeem Sulaiman, Senior Partner of Messrs HA associates.

The Electrical and Mechanical Contractor is Engr. Tokunbo Oshokoya, Senior Partner of Messrs Oshea Projects.

The Architect is Mr. Deji Johnson
The Quantity Surveyor is the late Otunba T.B Adebayo.

The Lekki property, the house in my village, Isanya Ogbo, and 3 Bedroom flat in a town house, at Omorinre Street in Lekki are the properties I have in the whole world.

I hereby authorize the EFCC to verify the above facts.

It is alleged that Chief Bisi Akande’s building at Ila-Orogun, which I understand is more than double in expanse of my house in Lekki and some other properties he has in Lagos and abroad were financed by Bola Tinubu. His house in Ibadan was also alleged to have been built by the contractor that built the secretariat in Oshogbo, when he was the Governor of Osun State.

I hereby challenge Chief Bisi Akande to clear the air by disclosing the source of financing these properties as I have done above.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the great philanthropist should also disclose the source of his wealth with which he bankrolled the elections of APC in the Southwest and that of General Muhammad Buhari and his various properties in Lagos.

He should also authorize the EFCC to verify such details as I have done above.

Thank you very much.
God bless Nigeria
CHIEF AYO ADEBANJO

Porn is a disgrace, I started watching at age 11 — Billie Eilish

American female singer, Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell, stage name: Billie Eilish, has described pornography as a disgrace.

The Grammy-winning singer made the assertion on “The Howard Stern Show” on Sirius XM radio on Monday.

Billie Eilish who turns 20 on Saturday also disclosed she started watching porn at the age of 11 and that it destroyed her brain.

According to a CNN report, the singer suffered nightmares because she watched some porn contents that were so violent and abusive.

“I think porn is a disgrace. I used to watch a lot of porn, to be honest. I started watching porn when I was, like, 11,” the “Bad Guy” singer said, saying it helped her feel as if she were cool and “one of the guys,”.

“I think it really destroyed my brain and I feel incredibly devastated that I was exposed to so much porn,” she added, saying she suffered nightmares because some of the content she watched was so violent and abusive.

Eilish, who was home-schooled in Los Angeles and has seven Grammy Awards, is known for her often dark lyrics.

In the ballad “Male Fantasy” on her second album “Happier Than Ever,” she sings about being home alone and distracting herself with pornography as she recalls a broken relationship.

Eilish said she is now angry at herself for thinking it was acceptable to watch porn.

“The first few times I, you know, had sex, I was not saying no to things that were not good. It was because I thought that’s what I was supposed to be attracted to,” she said.

Eilish, who started her career wearing baggy clothes to prevent people from commenting on her body, became the youngest person in history to win all four of the top Grammy Awards in the same year when she took home the statuettes for new artist, album, record and song of the year in 2020 at age 18.

The singer said her fame had made it hard to date. “It’s really hard to meet people when, you know, people are either terrified of you or think you’re out of their league,” Eilish said.

Eilish has received several accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, one Guinness World Record, three MTV Video Music Awards, and two Brit Awards.

She is the youngest artist in Grammy history and second overall to win all four general field categories—Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year—in the same year. She was named in Time magazine’s inaugural Time 100 Next list in 2019, and made it into the main Time 100 list in 2021.

EFCC arrests ex-MD of Fidelity Bank over fresh $72.87m linked to Diezani

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said it has uncovered an additional $72.87 million linked to former petroleum minister Diezani Allison-Madueke.

Mr Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesperson for the commission, said on Wednesday in Abuja that a former Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr Nnamdi Okonkwo, has been arrested in connection with the money.

Uwujaren who said that the money was lodged in the coffers of the bank, added that Okonkwo’s arrest was part of ongoing investigations on the former minister.

According to him, Okonkwo, who is currently the Chairman of First Bank Holding, alongside others, had earlier been grilled over $153 million and $115 million by the commission.

“While all the $153 million were recovered by the EFCC, the cases involving $115 million, as it relates with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) bribery matter, are in various courts.

“Okonkwo and Charles Onyedibe are currently being detained by the EFCC over the whereabout of the new $72.87 million,” he added.

Declare state of emergency on banditry, Tambuwal urges Buhari

0

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State says the declaration of a state of emergency on banditry would enable security operatives access to clear bandits’ enclaves and other hideouts.

Tambuwal made the suggestion on Wednesday in Sokoto when he received a delegation of the Northwest States Governors Forum.

The delegation was led by Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State on a condolence visit over the killing of 23 travellers in Sokoto State by bandits.

He appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to declare the state of emergency so as to give security operatives additional operational laws to ensure maximum successes in their operations.

Tambuwal said such declaration would allow operatives to work without concerns about rights violations as the bandits were enemies of humanity.

“Bandits have no religious, ideological or ethnicity inclinations; they were notorious criminals terrorising law-abiding citizens,’’ he said.

He added that the Federal Government should initiate processes for recruiting locals in the areas affected by banditry to complement the efforts of mainstream security personnel to tackle the menace.

“The recruited persons shall serve as Special Forces equipped with right skills and modern firearms to confront bandits since the locals know the terrains.

“After the special mission, the recruited persons could be re-engaged as forest guards to prevent new security challenges.

“In Sokoto State, we outlawed the self-styled vanguards referred at `Yansakai’ whose activities of extra-judicious killings led to reprisals and escalation of the situation,’’ he said.

The governor added that legitimate vigilance groups were being trained and teamed with mainstream security operatives to support the latter’s activities.

“All hands must be on deck to check banditry and to support President Buhari at all levels to contain the situation.

“This situation calls for specialised approach with holistic support from community groups, religious leaders and other individuals to tackle,’’ Tambuwal stressed.

He urged the citizenry to expose people supporting banditry in any form, especially the informants.

He also expressed appreciation of the governors forum for the solidarity visit and the donation of N50 million to support affected families.

Earlier, Gov. Masari said the visit was to commiserate with Tambuwal over the unfortunate attacks and the loss of lives.

He noted that states in the northwest are faced with similar challenge and that the governors had been collaborating to tackle banditry.

Masari stressed also that it was time citizens and communities stood up to protect themselves.

“Bandits behave worse than animals in view of the atrocities they perpetrate; people need to protect themselves.

“Police and other security personnel are inadequate, so we shall not wait for those barbaric bandits to maim and kill people at random.

“We shall confront them and deal with them the way they are supposed to be dealt with.

“It is no longer a blame game, rather we shall shun political differences to support authorities on containing the situation,’’ Masari said.

In his remarks, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State called for the deployment of scientific techniques in forest surveillance as forests remained the hideouts of the bandits.

Ganduje said communal approaches to solving the situation was paramount considering the loss of lives and valuables to banditry in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on Dec. 6, in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, bandits set 23 passengers ablaze in a bus.

Garri okay for diabetic patients, not cause of goitre — Researcher

0

A researcher, Prof. Polycarp Okafor, has said metabolism of cassava cyanide does not play any significant role in chronic diseases such as goitre or goitre with cretinism, Konzo, Tropical Chronic Pancreatitis (TCP) and diabetes.

Okafor, a Professor of Biochemical Toxicology, said this at the 52nd inaugural lecture at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), on Wednesday.

Okafor said some reported chronic cassava cyanide diseases were based on circumstantial evidence.

He admitted that the cassava cyanide toxicity with the associated chronic diseases should be a major concern for populations using the staple food, but added that he had overwhelming evidence from the result of his over 27 years of research on cassava cyanide, supported by results of other researchers, to back his claim.

Okafor said that some of those reported cases of chronic diseases could be as a result of malnutrition that plagued the countries or iodine deficiency as in the case of goitre or goitre with cretinism.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Okafor delivered a stimulating lecture, entitled “Metabolism of cassava cyanide and Jim Jones cyanide in humans: The imperative of food safety in the quest for food security.

”He said cassava could be processed into garri in a way that the residual cyanide content would be very low and would also have low glycemic index, thus could be consumed by diabetic patient.

He recommended that cassava and its products should be given a good priority to boost the economy and food security of the nation, and called on the Federal Government to rise to the challenge of ensuring that foods, drinks, water and the environment do not contain toxicants and chemical carcinogens beyond the acceptable limits.

In his remarks, MOUAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Herbert Udo, congratulated Okafor on his research and thought-provoking lecture.

“He has spoken to us soundly as a  professor and as a scientist and we must appreciate him,” he said.

Alleged Defilement: Baba Ijesha beaten, shirt torn by victim — Police

0

The Lagos State government has closed its case against Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James, alias Baba Ijesha, who is facing trial at an Ikeja Special Offences Court over allegations of defilement.

Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi, the Lagos State Director of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), made this known on Wednesday after the cross-examination of the sixth prosecution witness by the defence.

“The prosecution has closed its case against the defendant,” the DPP said.

Following the DPP’s statement, the defence counsel, Mr Kayode Olabiran, announced to the court that the defence intended to file a no-case submission.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo said: “We will take the no-case submission in the New Year; the court is rounding up.”

Earlier, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, in a ruling said Baba Ijesha’s confessional statement to the police was admissible in evidence.

The judge ruled that there was no evidence before the court, which proved that the embattled Nollywood actor was tortured into giving the statement to the police.

She noted that the claim that a police officer, Insp. Abigail Omane, had promised to set him free if he owned up to the allegations were not corroborated and described the defendant’s application to the court as an afterthought.

“Sitting on the floor does not vitiate the confessional statement. The statement is found to be relevant and admissible,” the judge said.

Following the ruling, the last prosecution witness, Omane, resumed her evidence.

The police officer told the court that after she had taken the evidence of the defendant, she took all the parties in the case to the office of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).

“Thereafter the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti,” she said.

While being cross-examined by Olabiran, Omane threw more light on why the defendant’s shirt was torn when he was brought to the police station.

“The survivor told us that she was the one that beat him. There was no report of harassment of the complainant at the police station three years ago.

“I’m not aware if the police were informed prior to the installation of the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) at the complainant’s house,” she said.

The case was adjourned until Jan. 26, 2022, for adoption of the no-case submission.

NAN reports that Baba Ijesha is facing a six-count charge bordering on indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by penetration.

The defendant was arraigned on June 24. Six prosecution witnesses testified against the defendant.

They are – actress and comedienne, Ms Damilola Adekoya, alias Princess; the 14-year-old survivor (name withheld), a child expert and Mrs Olabisi Ajayi-Kayode.

Others are: a medical doctor, Dr Aniekan Makanjuola, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), ASP Wahab Kareem and Omane.

EndSARS: FG increases police salary plus 20% allowance

0

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a new salary structure for officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, made this known to State House correspondents at the end of the Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to him, major highlight of the increase is the provision of a 20 per cent peculiar allowance for the police.

He said: “I am particularly very happy today to inform Nigerians that the Federal Executive Council has approved the review and upgrading of the take home pay of police personnel in this country.

“You recall that in Oct. 2020 this country was rocked with End SARS protests and the president addressed the nation appealing for calm, after which he promised that the salary of the police will be reviewed in recognition of the services they have been rendering to the country – maintaining peace and tranquillity.

“So, FEC has today approved a proposal for the review of their salaries, which will take effect from January 2022.

“We have tried to create a situation where their take home pay will be enhanced through the improvement of issues such as duty tour allowance, which has been reviewed to six per cent of their new take home pay,” he stated.

The minister also revealed that the Council approved N1.1billion for the payment of outstanding uninsured benefits of the police.

“Council has also approved the payment of N1,120, 172,150.00 as outstanding benefits of personnel for uninsured period of 2013-2020.

“It has also approved N127,972,269.20 for payment as outstanding death benefits of 5,472 personnel for the uninsured period of 2013-August 2021, not covered under the group life assurance.

“Council has also approved N1.2 billion as outstanding burial expenses of personnel for a period of January 2012-2021,’’ he said.

According to the minister, the Council also approved the annual insurance premiums of N750 million as well as the payment of N4, 812,500,000 for repairs and replacement of damaged Police infrastructure in future budgets, starting from 2022.

He said the Council also approved a tax waver in the sum of N18.6 billion for junior officers of the Police in order to increase their take home pay with effect from Oct. 2021.

“Similarly government has approved an increase of the current rent subsidy, which is currently between 15-20 percent, amounting to N61 billion.

“With the increase, it is now 40 percent of the Consolidate Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), in the sum of N78.3 billion.

“It has also approved payment of an additional six per cent shift duty allowance for officers on Grade Level 01-14 and supervisors allowances for officers on Grade Level 15 and above, totalling about N10.038 billion with effect from 2022.

“Most importantly, government has also approved payment of 20 per cent of CONPOSS as a peculiar allowance to boost morale and take home pay of the Nigeria Police personnel,” he said.

The minister stated that the Auditor General of the Federation had been directed to cross check the template and claims approved by Council, after which a clean salary structure would be computed and introduced by the Salaries and Wages Commission, which would be adopted as soon as possible.

He said with the new development, government would expect the police to redouble their efforts to justify the confidence reposed in them.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr Zainab Ahmed, who fielded questions on the salary increase revealed that the increment was not captured in the 2022 budget.

She, however, stated that after computations and approval, a supplementary budget would be sent to the National Assembly to that effect, to pave way for the payment of arrears and full implementation of the new salary.
