Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has urged Abuja Transport and Aviation Correspondents (ATACA) to woe international investors to the transportation sector through effective publications.

Amaechi, at the unveiling of the maiden ATACA magazine, on Thursday in Abuja said the publications would help boost infrastructure development in the country.

He thanked the journalists for their contributions during the construction of various rail lines while urging them to continue their collaboration with the ministry.

”I want to commend you on the magazine and appeal to you to keep the flag of reportage flying,” he said.

Representing the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Serika, Director of Press of the Ministry, Dr James Odaudu, also commended efforts of the association in putting together a unique product.

According to him, an event like this creates an opportunity for journalist to tell their own story as they venture into issues that may be overlooked by the stakeholders.

”I congratulate you for this effort and I make a commitment to you that this magazine will enjoy our patronage, if there is subscription, the ministry will subscribe.

”I also wish to thank you for the support the ministry has enjoyed from the association; the level of support we have enjoyed cannot be quantified.

”We thank you for particularly supporting the ministry’s flagship programme, we plead with you that as we go into the implementation stage of the roadmap that you will remain with us.

”Criticise us if need be and when we get it right, you should do well to continue to tell that to the public.

”We congratulate you once more and pledge to support ATACA in any way we can and urge that you use this medium for constructive criticism and not to attack people,” he added.

Also speaking, the Managing Director, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Koko, praised the association for the initiative.

Koko, represented by the General Manager of NPA, Abuja liaison office, Mr Edward Dauda, said the magazine would enlighten Nigerians on issues in the maritime industry and transportation in general.

”You have done so well. I’m happy for the relationship between us and the association.

`’Not everyone knows the difference between Customs and the NPA, so you need to do a lot of work to enlighten the public about the different agencies in the maritime sector.

”We are going to subscribe to the magazine, the quality is good, the price is fair and I think a lot of people will be eager to subscribe.”

Representing Captain Rabiu Hamisu, the Managing Director of FAAN, Mr Morris Anozie said the magazine would bring value to the society and increase knowledge of the sector.

He said FAAN was determined to strengthen security in all airports across the country to kick out touts within the airport vicinities.

Earlier, the Chairman of ATACA, Chris Agabi, said the magazine is a first of its kind and one which every stakeholder in the industry would look forward to having in their shelves.

He said the magazine would be produced on a quarterly basis and would keep the public abreast with current happenings in the transport and aviation sector.

He said: ”I will like to assure both ministries of the association’s commitment and support when necessary through our reportage.

”This is the first in the country that reports only the transport and aviation sector.

”We are proud of what we have achieved and we assure our stakeholders that we will not relent but keep advancing and innovating.’’

Lassa fever kills two doctors, mother, baby in Nasarawa

0

Lassa fever has killed two doctors, a mother and her baby in Nasarawa, the Chief Medical Director,  Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Dr Ikrama Hassan disclosed.

The state had last week announced the confirmation of two cases of Lassa fever since the beginning of the dry season.

Reporting the sad development, the CMD revealed that the two doctors who were Consultant gynaecologists got infected after performing surgery on a probable case of the disease.

He blamed the unavailability of a testing facility for the death of the doctors.

“We cannot do testing here because there is no testing facility in Nasarawa, and the woman’s case was an emergency.

“So we believed that is how the two doctors contracted the virus. Unfortunately, we lost the doctors as well as the mother and her baby,” the CMD added.

“If there was a testing centre here, I believe test for Lassa fever would have been conducted before carrying out the surgery.

“Gone are the days when a patient has to wait for many days before getting a test result,” the CMD declared.

“We immediately traced all the personnel’s in the hospital that had contacts with the deceased to the patient and the doctors.

“All the contacts, including medical personnel in the hospital, had tested negative and free from Lassa fever at the moment,” he said.

VIO destroys over 1,400 impounded motorcycles in Abuja

0

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Directorate of Road Traffic Services on Thursday crushed over 1,400 impounded motorcycles.

FCT DRTS Director, Mr Wadata Bodinga, said that the commercial motorcycles were seized between January and June from operators within the city centre.

Bodinga said that there were 600 more motorcycles undergoing the process of court forfeiture, adding that they would also be crushed when the process is concluded.

“We have  begun the crushing of seized motorcycles that have been duly forfeited by the court of law.

“There are about 1,500  of them crushed as there are about 600 motorcycles that are undergoing the process of forfeiture, we would also follow the same procedure with these ones.

“We believe this would serve as a deterrence to people who have refused to follow the rules guiding the operation of motorcycles in the FCT,” he said.

The director further said that the crushing of impounded motorcycles would continue until the last commercial motorcycle operating within the FCT is crushed.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Babaji Sunday, said the exercise would help curtail insecurity in the territory, saying that most of the motorcycles were being used to commit various crimes in the nation’s capital.

“These motorcycles are being used to commit most of the crimes, especially kidnapping, banditry, even within the city centres, they always use these motorcycles as get away and that is why we are crushing them.

“This would help reduce the crime rate seriously,” he said.

Mr Sunday advised those violating traffic laws and perpetrating evil acts with their motorcycles to have a rethink.

“When they are caught they would be made to face the law and their motorcycles would be crushed,” he said.

US imposes sanctions against Chinese companies over abuse of Uyghurs

0

The Biden administration said Thursday it is imposing new sanctions on several Chinese biotech and surveillance companies and government entities for actions in Xinjiang province, the latest step against Beijing over human rights abuses of Uyghur Muslims in the country’s western region.

The US Commerce Department is targeting China’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences and its 11 research institutes that focus on using biotechnology to support the Chinese military.

The move will bar American companies from selling components to the entities without a license.

“The scientific pursuit of biotechnology and medical innovation can save lives. Unfortunately, the PRC (People’s Republic of China) is choosing to use these technologies to pursue control over its people and its repression of members of ethnic and religious minority groups,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in a statement. “We cannot allow U.S. commodities, technologies, and software that support medical science and biotechnical innovation to be diverted toward uses contrary to U.S. national security,”

The Treasury Department is also set to issue penalties against several Chinese entities, according to a senior administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the soon-to-be-announced moves.

The official, explaining the Commerce Department actions, noted that U.S. intelligence has established that Beijing has set up a high tech surveillance system across Xinjiang that uses biometric facial recognition and has collected DNA samples from all residents, ages 12 to 65, in Xinjiang as part of a systematic effort to suppress Uyghurs.

The department, in a rule detailing its decision, said a review by multiple federal agencies had determined that the Chinese academy and research institutes “use biotechnology processes to support Chinese military end uses and end users, to include purported brain-control weaponry.”

The Treasury Department last week also announced a ban on U.S. investment in the Chinese facial recognition company SenseTime over concerns that the technology was being used to oppress Uyghurs.

The White House announced last week it would stage a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing, citing China’s “egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang.” U.S. athletes will continue to compete but Biden will not send the usual contingent of dignitaries.

The administration also said this week that it supported bipartisan legislation that bans imports into the U.S. from Xinjiang unless companies can demonstrate the goods were not produced by forced labor.

China has denied any abuses and says the steps it has taken are necessary to combat terrorism and a separatist movement.

Obi Cubana promises low-cost housing for charity

Obinna Iyiegbu, the Chairman of Cubana Group, popularly known as Obi Cubana says he will build low-cost housing for charity across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Iyiegbu made the promise while receiving the 2021 Man of The Year Award presented to him by Igbere TV, Leadership Excellence Award  on Thursday in Abuja.

He also promised to complete the low cost housing project before the end of 2022 in support of some identified senior citizens who are in dire need of accommodation.

“For this pilot project, six senior citizens who have difficulties in terms of accommodation have been identified in the six geopolitical zones of the country.

“We have moved round the country and identified them and we will use this platform to affect their lives in the year 2022 by developing a low cost housing for six of them,” he said.

He added that the honour was an encouragement for him to do more especially in the areas of youth empowerment, humanitarian gestures as well as mentorship of the young ones.

James Anyalekwa, the Director of Igbere TV, said Obi Cubana garnered over a million votes among Nigerian youths whose lives he has touched in one way or the other.

According to Anyalekwa, ‘the massive votes cast in the online electioneering exercise which lasted over four weeks was a show of solidarity from youths of the country and beyond for Obi Cubana.

Explaining reasons for the 2021 edition of Igbere TV Leadership Excellence Award, Anyalekwa, said it was for the dual purpose of celebrating excellence among Nigerians who have done something exceptional in affecting the lives of others.

“It is also to identify and impact the lives of the less privileged especially some senior citizens of the country who have no roof over their heads”.

Handing over the award to Obi Cubana, the Director of ABN TV, Ifeanyi Okali commended the awardee for being at the forefront of efforts to enhance the lives of communities in the country.

Okali urged him not to relent in lifting the burdens of people through empowerment and philanthropic gestures.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the award presentation came one month after he was scheduled to receive it.

The Anambra state born businessman was scheduled to be honoured alongside other eminent Nigerians on Nov. 2 but was unavoidably absent due to unforeseen circumstances.

Highpoints of the event was the unveiling of the prototype low cost housing.

Ancelloti’s son, 6 Real Madrid players test positive for COVID-19

0

Real Madrid may have run into its toughest opponent of the season: COVID-19.

An outbreak of the virus has infected six Real Madrid players. The club said Thursday that Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, Rodrygo, and backup goalkeeper Andriy Lunin were infected, a day after both midfielder Luka Modric and Marcelo tested positive.

Assistant coach Davide Ancelotti, son of Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, was also hit by the virus.

The club did not mention the health status of any of those infected.

While Madrid made the outbreak public, the Spanish soccer federation said Thursday it was putting back into place a ban on shaking hands and other greetings as well as any tributes held before kickoff “as additional preventative measures given the rise in cases.”

The league reminded clubs and players that they need to take precautions and undergo tests for the coronavirus every 15 days.

The infections come with Madrid breezing toward the winter break with a commanding lead in the Spanish league.

While Bale and Marcelo are no longer key parts of Madrid’s team, Modric, Asensio and Rodrygo all play important roles for Ancelotti.

Madrid hosts struggling Cádiz on Sunday riding a 10-game winning streak in all competitions and with an eight-point lead over second-place Sevilla. The team’s undefeated run of 13 games includes wins over Sevilla, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, plus Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Modric, who at 36 is still competing near the level that won him the 2018 Ballon d’Or award, played the full 90 minutes in last weekend’s 2-0 win over Atlético that left the defending champions 13 points behind in a distant fourth place.

Ancelotti could replace the Croatia midfielder with Federico Valverde and still entrust Toni Kroos to lead Madrid’s attack against Cádiz, AP reports.

Asensio also started against Atlético and scored his team’s second goal. His spot would logically be filled by Rodrygo or even Bale, so their absence could give Eden Hazard another chance.

While relegation-threatened Cádiz, with only two league wins this season, should not cause too many problems for the leaders at home, Madrid will have a tougher test on Wednesday when it visits Athletic Bilbao.

Sevilla will hope to cut into Madrid’s advantage on Saturday when it hosts Atlético. Both teams will be missing players because of injury. Atlético will be without Antoine Griezmann, who injured his right thigh against Madrid, while Sevilla will be missing several players, including striker Youssef En-Nesyri, Jesús Navas, Suso Fernández, Erik Lamela and Óliver Torres.

Third-place Real Betis, nine points behind Madrid, visits Bilbao on Sunday. Betis has won four in a row in the league by a combined score of 11-1. Striker Juanmi Jiménez has scored six times during Betis’ winning streak, taking his season tally to 10 goals — second only to Karim Benzema’s 13 for Madrid.

Languishing in eighth place, Barcelona will hope that Elche’s arrival to Camp Nou on Saturday will allow it to end a three-game winless run.

3 judges to be denied promotions over ex-parte orders

Three Nigerian judges on Tuesday has been ordered by the National Judicial Council (NJC) to be denied promotion whenever they are due to over conflicting rulings on a leadership case of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and candidacy controversies ahead of the Anambra governorship election.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Muhammad, had earlier approved the probe of the three judges over conflicting verdicts in their courts.

The earlier summoned judges are the chief judges of Rivers, Kebbi, Cross River, Anambra, Jigawa, FCT and Imo states. But after questioning, 3 of the judges Rivers, Kebbi, and Cross River were recommended for a probe.

Furious by their actions, the CJN had said; “Your job as Heads of Court is a sacred one, and it, therefore, includes you vicariously taking the sins of others.  There must be an end to this nonsense”.

Disclosing the decision of the NJC after a probe of the matter, Soji Oye, NJC director of information, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the council at the resolution during a two-day meeting held on December 14 and 15 said; “Even though there was no written petition, allegations of corruption or impropriety against the subject judges, council nevertheless, initiated an investigation pursuant to its inherent disciplinary powers under the constitution to unravel the circumstances that led to the spate of ex parte orders granted by these courts of coordinate jurisdiction over matters bearing same parties and subject matter.”

In the meeting which was chaired by Mary Peter-Odili, deputy chairman of the council, it was agreed that Okogbule Gbasam, judge of the high court of Rivers state “be barred from elevation to higher bench for two years whenever he is due, as he failed to exercise due diligence in granting the ex parte order in Suit No: PHC/2183/CS/2021 between Ibealwuchi Earnest Alex & 4 Ors and Prince Uche Secondus & anor, as there was no real urgency, in the circumstances of the matter, that would have required an ex parte order.

“Council also resolved that hon. justice Nusirat I. Umar of the high court of Kebbi state be barred from elevation to higher Bench for two years whenever due, having found fundamental defects and non-compliance with the law in granting the ex parte order in suit no: KB/HC/M.71/2021 between Yahaya Usman & 2 Ors and Prince Uche Secondus & anor.

“Hon. justice Edem Ita Kooffreh of the high court of Cross River state will not be promoted to higher bench for five years for allowing himself to be used as a tool for “forum shopping” and abuse of court process in suit No: HC/240/2021 between Enang Kanum Wani and Uche Secondus as it was evident that, in granting the ex parte order, he was seised of earlier orders of the high courts of Rivers and Kebbi states, being courts of coordinate jurisdiction with his.

“The council also placed him on its Watch-List for a period of two years.”

The Ebonyi Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it seized about 196 pinches of methamphetamine, popularly called “Mkpurummiri” from suspected drug dealers from January to date.

Mr Isa Adoro, the state NDLEA Commander disclosed this when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki on Thursday.

Adoro said that the seizures were made by the operatives of the agency in various locations in the state, including rural communities.

The commander restated the commitment of the agency to fighting drug trafficking and abuse not only in Ebonyi but in the entire country.

“The command has been working round the clock in spite of security challenges. We have carried out a lot of public enlightenment in Schools, Churches, Mosques and communities on the danger of drug intake.

“In general, 2021 from January till date, we have seized 196 pinches of methamphetamines, including the lost quantity, meth soaked with beverage and these bring it to 0.506kgs,” he said.

On dangers associated with the intake of Mkpurummiri, the Commander described the drug as “most current dangerous” one to health around the globe.

“The mkpurummiri addiction has no cure any where around the world. It makes one lose senses; it causes weakening of teeth and falling.

“To quickly know the person who is addicted to methamphetamine; he or she will sometimes pick off hair, peeling fingernails and experience regular sleepless night.

“I call on stakeholders in the state to join hands with the NDLEA in fighting the menace of drug trafficking and abuse,” Adoro advised.

5G: We’re not aware of Tinubu’s connection to Mafab Communications — NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has denied former governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu has any link with Mafab Communications Limited, one of the winners of the 5G spectrum sold by the Commission in a public auction on Monday.

In a statement denying the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had influence in the emergence of Mafab as one of the winners, NCC said; “In the course of its routine media review, today, December 15, 2021, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) became aware of publications in some online media channels alleging the involvement of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Governor of Lagos State, in Mafab Communications Limited, one of the winners of the 5G spectrum sold by the Commission in a public auction conducted on Monday, December 13, 2021, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

“It bears restating that, consistent with the Commission’s long-established regulatory culture and tradition, the process leading to the auction of the 5G spectrum was open, fair and transparent in the most, as the public auction followed a rigorous due process and was witnessed by a cross-section of stakeholders as observers, including the media, the Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) as well as civil society groups.

“Mafab Communications Limited is a corporate entity duly licensed by the Commission to conduct telecommunications business. The company, which is in good regulatory standing with the Commission, currently holds international data access (IDA), inter-connect data exchange (IDE) and Value-Added Service (VAS) licences.

“It is pertinent to state that the Information Memorandum (IM) for the auction of the 3.5 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum clearly set out eligibility criteria for participation of interested bidders in the auction, which included that new companies could participate in the bid.

“Over the years, the NCC has had spectrum auctions and as an independent regulatory agency, has maintained an undisputable reputation of successful auctions based on openness, fairness and transparency, a fact widely acknowledged locally and internationally. NCC’s auction proceedings conform to international best practice, devoid of any undue influence or interferences whatsoever.

“A higher standard of integrity and openness was emplaced in the 5G auction as the process was, for the first time, witnessed by the public both physically and virtually through a link provided by the  Commission on its official website.

“The Commission would like to assure Nigerians that, following the successful auction of the 5G spectrum, it is prepared to drive the implementation of the next phase of the deployment of the new technology, in line with the Federal Government’s approved plan, for the benefit of all citizens”.

Akande: Disclose the source of your wealth, Adebanjo dares Tinubu

0

Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has dared the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to disclose the source of his wealth.

Adebanjo stated this while reacting to an allegation by Bisi Akande, the interim national chairman of the APC, in his book ‘My Participation’.

Akande had in the book claimed that Adebanjo, coerced the former governor of Lagos state to build a house for him in the Lekki area of the state.

Narrating how he got to know, Akande said; “One day, Sir Olaniwun was launching a book at Muson Centre, Lagos. After the book presentation, Tinubu said I should not go and that he would like to see me. We met in a small room where he also invited Sir Olaniwun Ajayi. ‘Papa, you can see that this document is old, Tinubu said as he handed over a big envelope to Ajayi. This is your C of O (Certificate of Occupancy)!’

“Tinubu told me later that after he presented Adebanjo’s C of O to him, Adebanjo was always pestering Tinubu until he helped built a house on the plot.

“The street was also named in honour of Adebanjo and he is living in that house now at Lekki Phase One”.

Reacting, Adebanjo denied “categorically that my house at Lekki was built with my resources through the sale of 3 developed properties, loan from GTBank and the sale of undeveloped landed property given me by my late leader Chief Obafemi Awolowo of blessed memory

“The details are as follows:

“A 4 bedroom duplex with 2 bedroom flat enclosed with 2 undeveloped plots at plot 4, block 14, Nuru Oniwo Street, Aguda Surulere, Lagos State, this is where I was living before moving to Lekki.

“The house was commissioned in 1972 by Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“A wing of the duplex was once occupied by a staff of the security outfit then known as “special branch” headed then by the late Alhaji M.D. Yussuf who later became Inspector General of Police when General Olusegun Obasanjo was the Head of State.

“It was later occupied by one of the wives Chief Pius Akinyelure, who often visit his wife there in company of Senator Bola Tinubu.

“The gate of this property was forced open by Abacha security forces when NADECO was holding a sendoff party for American ambassador Walter Carrington in my house, I took the Federal Government to court for damages and I was awarded #1million naira which has not been paid till today by the Federal Government, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba SAN, was my counsel.

“The house was sold to St Baths Aglican Church, Aguda, Surulere. Two storey building at Odedola Street, Surulere, Lagos State.

“I bought it through an Estate Agent by name Mr. Shiwoniku who has relocated to UK, he has a brother who is a legal practitioner in Abuja.

“The house was sold to a Ghanaian by name Mr Akappo.

“He is still alive and he lives in one of the flat in the building. Four storey building with a warehouse on the ground floor and six flats on top. It was commissioned by Chief Awolowo in 1977.

“I inherited the plot of 45’X100’ from my mother Salamotu Anomo-Adebanjo, who built a bungalow on it.

“She bought the land when I was in primary school in 1940 from one Pa. Idowu Onitiri for £20, which she paid by installment of £10, £7, £3. His son Akanbi Onitiri, executed the conveyance for me without extra payment after showing him the purchase receipts from his father, when I was developing it in 1976. Akanbi Onitiri is the father of Sumbo Onitiri, a well known estate surveyor in Lagos.
The building was sold to a woman through an estate agent.

“I then took a loan from GTBank to complete the house in Lekki where I am living now.

“When the interest on the loan became unbearable, I was compelled to sell the undeveloped land given to me by Chief Awolowo in Dide-Olu Estate in Maroko Victoria Island. One Mr. Ade Otusanya a friend of my son Femi Ayo-Adebanjo bought the land.

“The contractor who built my Lekki house is Engr. Hakeem Sulaiman, Senior Partner of Messrs HA associates.

“The Electrical and Mechanical Contractor is Engr. Tokunbo Oshokoya, Senior Partner of Messrs Oshea Projects.

“The Architect is Mr. Deji Johnson. The Quantity Surveyor is the late Otunba T.B Adebayo.

“The Lekki property, the house in my village, Isanya Ogbo, and 3 Bedroom flat in a town house, at Omorinre Street in Lekki are the properties I have in the whole world.

“I hereby authorize the EFCC to verify the above facts”.

Returning the punch, Adebanjo said; “It is alleged that Chief Bisi Akande’s building at Ila-Orogun, which I understand is more than double in expanse of my house in Lekki and some other properties he has in Lagos and abroad were financed by Bola Tinubu. His house in Ibadan was also alleged to have been built by the contractor that built the secretariat in Oshogbo, when he was the Governor of Osun State”.

While noting he had expected “Tinubu within a few days to refute such a malicious falsehood about me emanating from his Man Friday” but didn’t, the Afenifere leader called on the Economic Financial Crimes Commission to referee the challenge he posed to the APC national leader.

“Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the great philanthropist should also disclose the source of his wealth with which he bankrolled the elections of APC in the Southwest and that of General Muhammad Buhari and his various properties in Lagos.

“He should also authorize the EFCC to verify such details as I have done above,” he said. Read full PRESS RELEASE.
