1. National Assembly fights Malami back, appeals Electoral Act judgment [Punch Newspaper]

The National Assembly has begun moves to thwart the actions of some members of the federal executive who are bent on removing  Section 84(12) from the Electoral Act 2022.

The PUNCH on Thursday gathered that the nation’s apex legislature had started the process of appealing the judgment of a Federal High Court, Umuahia, Abia State, which removed Section 84(12) from the Electoral Act.

Terrorists who attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train have threatened to kill those in their captivity unless the government meets them.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared nomination form is free for female aspirants.

This was confirmed by the National Woman Leader of the party, Dr Beta Edu, on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Edu, the Senator Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee NWC, “has provided a platform for them (females) to run”. Read more.

6. Court dismisses suit seeking sack of Gov Ayade, Deputy over defection to APC [NewsWireNGR]

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, declined to sack Cross River Governor, Ben Ayade and his deputy, Ivara Esu over their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

The main opposition party, PDP, had in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/975/2021, prayed the court to sack both Ayade and his deputy, contending that the duo, having abandoned the political party that sponsored their re-election, ought to vacate their respective offices. Read more.

7. Over 2/3rd of Africa’s 1.3 billion residents infected with COVID-19 — WHO [NewsWireNGR]

The number of unreported cases of COVID-19 infections among the 1.3 billion residents in Africa is far higher than previously reported, according to the latest findings of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

“New WHO analyses show that over two-thirds of the people on the African continent may have acquired a certain level of immunity following exposure to the COVID-19-virus,” Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, said on Thursday. Read more.

8. Drug Cartel: Court dismisses Abba Kyari’s suit requesting NDLEA’s apology [NewsWireNGR]

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday, dismissed a fundamental enforcement rights suit and demand for apology filed by suspended DCP Abba Kyari against National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the suit after counsel for the NDLEA, Joseph Sunday, prayed the court that the matter be struck out. Read more.
