What to Watch: ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ and 419 related movies on Netflix

Some Nigerians are expecting a Netflix movie on Ramon Abbas “Hushpuppi”, a cyber fraudster (a.k.a Yahoo Yahoo) who at this time is still remanded in the United States (US) prison while awaiting judgement.

While Nigerians await a documentary on Hushpuppi,  below are some related movies already on the Movie streaming platform:

Inventing Anna

The documentary follows the report by a journalist who against all odds investigated the case of Anna Delvey, an Instagram-legendary heiress who stole the hearts and money of New York elites.

I Care A Lot

A shady legal guardian takes advantage of the poor legal system to extort victims. She lands in hot water when she tries to bilk a woman who has ties to a powerful gangster.

Tinder Swindler

Another true-crime documentary. A group of women who were the victims of a dating app-based swindler join together in an attempt to hunt him down and recover the millions of dollars that were stolen from them.

The Puppet Master

A cruel con man masquerading as a British spy manipulates and steals from his victims, leaving ruined families in his wake.

The Imposter

The Imposter tells the story of notorious French conman Frédéric Bourdin who managed to convince a grieving family in Texas that he was their son Nicholas, who had been missing for three years.

FYRE: The greatest party that never happened

Probably one of the most notorious scams ever, the doc follows conman Billy McFarland and his promise of putting on “the biggest event of the decade.”

The Fyre app is created to help book top musical acts, and a grand music event is planned to mark its launch. Supermodels film promos promising tropical luxury and the internet buzzes with anticipation, but the reality doesn’t live up to the promise.

Made You Look: A true story about fake art

Filmmaker Barry Avrich chronicles the events of the largest art fraud in American history, when Knoedler & Company unwittingly purchased and sold fake works by famed artists. It ended up being the *largest* art fraud in American history.

The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley

With a new invention that promised to revolutionize blood testing, Elizabeth Holmes became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire, heralded as the next Steve Jobs. Then, just two years later, her multibillion-dollar company was dissolved.

Note: Although the rest of the world may find it hard to relate with, ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ and 419 are two popular slangs on Nigerian streets, which simply translate “scam”.

Yahoo Yahoo is usually used to describe internet fraudsters in Nigeria while 419 is used to describe general scams in Nigeria. The number was inspired by Section 419 of the Nigerian criminal code which deals with advance fee fraud.
